Man, I feel like the Goketsu are getting picked on by being forced to prioritize decoding and give up spy info. I've never heard the Hokage forcing other clans to give up their useful stuff that would tremendously benefit Leaf, like the Nara's library. I'm guessing Asuma doesn't trust the Goketsu yet.

Also, this was informative of the limits of the rule of law in Leaf. We should rethink whether we wanna go through the hassle of adopting people, if Asuma can just force them to give up clan secrets anyway

sealmasters better than Kagome
Excuse you?

Ren is a Kurosawa and a social specialist, the latter meaning she probably has high Calligraphy to write really pretty letters and/or forge other people's handwriting. She wouldn't give her sealmasters "a sloppy drawing", it'd be a perfect replica, so Mist will finish reverse-engineering Skywalkers faster than everyone else. Unless I'm misunderstanding how the Iron Nerve works?

I think she can only do this if she traced the seal correctly by hand? Which she might have had an opportunity to do, or not, depending on how much downtime they had with skywalkers at hand.

Well, we have the option of just throwing it at clanless leaf decoders with Asuma's agreement/promise that any clan secrets revealed in that way will get top leaf classification with exclusion for Goketsu? (effectively remaining clan secrets)
Assuming Leaf/the Hokage has some cryptographers trusted with more important secrets than that already, that they're not betraying to other clans. 🤷

You can get blanks that are accurate enough for research purposes just by looking at them, I'm pretty sure, so long as you have high enough calligraphy to draw the thing decently afterwards. @faflec, is this not what we did with the Casino Seals and the Isan seals we gave to J?

Suggestions on what to do this update/what I would vote for:
  • Ask Asuma to give Kagome clearance to learn Shadow Clones to decode notes faster.
  • Go to one of the minor clans and buy their adoption slots. Give them a cut in that land-clearing scheme we've been planning to do if necessary.
  • Discuss my idea on getting our hand on the Condor Scroll with the clan, then pitch it to Asuma if viable.
  • Have a Forbidden Lore meeting.

I don't think we know how much chakra Kagome has. I doubt it'd have been a specialty of a sealmaster like him, so I'm not sure if he's ready for SC yet.

We still haven't heard back from Noda, so it would be premature to assume we'll need a slot for her. Should we maybe get back in touch with her again instead?

Make sure to prioritize sorting through Jiraiya's notes in what free time you have.

Honestly, after that little speech Asuma gave us I believe our next plan should simply be:
  1. Eat
  2. Sleep
  3. Decipher
  4. Repeat until Complete
I'd rather not test Asuma and the faster we get this done the more favorably he will look on us. Gathering all of the political goodwill we can is worth putting everything else on the backburner.

In fact, I'd even say that we should consider just handing over ALL of Jiraiya's notes so more people can get to work on them (after we confer with the clan to get their input (if they say it's a horrible idea, obviously we'd wouldn't go through with it)). It would be highly symbolic of our commitment to Leaf and might even win us first choice of prizes. Exclusive seals be damned; we were able to make Skywalkers out of airdomes in the middle of the wilderness. We can invent new applications for the seals Jiraiya created again and those can be proprietary for our clan. Showing solidarity is important and this would be the type of action to speak louder than anything else anyone else has contributed so far.

We don't need this shiny as much as we need what we can get in exchange for it when we aren't losing access to it. We still have our creativity and that's our true ace in the hole.

Does Kagome have the chakra pool for that? I mean, from what we know of his history, he was drafted into fuuinjutsu as soon as he showed an aptitude for it. And, come to think of it, we've never really seen him use anything other than basic chakra techniques (reinforcement, wall walking, etc). So if his entire arsenal is fuuinjutsu, then his reserves might not be big enough for any serious jutsu, let alone one as prohibitively "expensive" as Shadow Clones...

Hazou can't even work on this, because Hazou doesn't have levels in Crypto.

Speaking of the notes:
"Sir, I gave you all the intelligence-related elements of the notes that we found so far, but there's a lot more of it and it's all mixed together with stuff that should be Gōketsu property."

"Such as?"

Kagome-sensei started counting on his fingers. "Jiraiya-stinker's Lightning Lash technique, Swamp of the Underworld, love letters, the start of three separate romance novels built off those love letters, a bunch of blackmail stuff on people here in—Yow!" He glared at Hazō, whose grip on his arm had gotten tight enough to grind the bones together.
I was under the impression that J's jutsu went to Naruto and we 'just' got his seals. Does this line need to be changed or should we start getting hyped about learning Needle Jizo?

All the more reason to hand it over directly, but we code use Iron Nerve to copy every page and hand in the copies if we're so inclined.

We could even negotiate to have first access to w/e non-spy stuff is in the notes in exchange to letting the Hokage's office paper pushers to start working on it.

I'm not really sure, but the only time I can remember something was declared a Gōketsu Clan Secret is when J revealed what happened at USoUD. Everything else we have? Not a Clan Secret.

We... might wanna change this
You don't have to declare something is a clan secret for it to be a clan secret. It works the other way around, in fact. Everything is secret until stated otherwise.

He can't force us to give up clan secrets. He can just kill us though if he can sell it to other clans as us not giving up secrets that belong to the Village, like Jirayia's spy network notes.

It's all in the perception of other clans and the culture, not any kind of written-down law.

Wait, really? Cool!

iptables -P INPUT DROP
Yeah, if you had to reveal what the secret was (even 'just' to the Tower bureaucracy) to get it classified as a secret, it wouldn't be much of a secret.

So instead, imagine it like a bunch of little kingdoms deciding to collaborate and pool their resources. But they don't want to stop being little kingdoms with their own internal power, and they don't want to pool all of their resources because some if it they don't want anyone else to have. So when they start pooling their resources, they agree to only pool what they're comfortable pooling and letting everyone keep everything else to themselves, and we'll all agree to not pry into what you're holding back so that you don't pry into what we're holding back.

Nah, I get the thing about not telling the Tower I just assumed that everyone in each Clan have to know what is considered a secret. For one, for ninja teams to function their members should know about some of each-others abilities. This is hardly possible if each of them is a Clan Secret.

And I thought that not everything is a Clan Secret because Jiraiya explicitly stated that some information is a Clan Secret in the first place.

Now I really want to put together a big packet of plausible OP crap we could conceivably have as 'Clan Secrets" and go around innocently asking some of the other clans what the process is for having them declared clan secrets like a gullible moron.

Double the points for using it to fuck with Neji. Triple the points for giving people interaction surveys too.
