The particular game. Velorien, I highly reccommend not looking in the spoiler.

Celeste draws a lot of its effect from strong identification with and immersion as the heroine, and teaches through its gameplay as much as its story. It coveys far more if played than watched.

In particular, the brutal and often frustrating difficulty is important to the message of the game, because Celeste is fair. It's brutally, honestly fair. The only reason you die when playing Celeste is because you are not skilled enough.

And you will die. Over, and over, and over.

Celeste broke me of my fear of failure, and it did that largely by investing me deeply enough that it pushed me through a wall. I broke my personal frustration barrier, and it hasn't reformed since. Sometimes I still go back to the game, just to remind myself that failure isn't final until you give up, that failing can be fun, that I can develop mastery, that humans can self-modify in a very real and true way.

It also matters that you hate Badeline. That you see her as Madeline sees her. That also takes investment and frustration and wanting progress that isn't coming fast enough for you.

Realizing that you, too, have been reading Badeline wrong for the entire game is very fucking important. It's the lesson. And I don't want Velorien to trip over it by accident in a let's play.
This made me buy the game and finish the first two chapters. My fingers now hurt(ow).
I like Badeline.

In this case, I would advise against assist mode.

Snowflake is what happens when you have another Keiko who knows her time is short and genuinely wants what's best for herself.

Huh. Is the 'clone wants the best for the original' thing enforced by the jutsu? Otherwise, it seems unlikely to me that the clone would want better things for Keiko than what Keiko actually wants.

Granted, the clone might have better access to what she desires; but I would not automatically assume it is well-meaning unless the jutsu guarantees that. (and if it does, that has interesting consequences regarding impact on personality)

Bloodlines are powerful and important, and you may have wanted to know more about which bloodlines do what. It may be important to know what village has what bloodlines, so that we can prepare adequately when going up against a force from said village. Maybe the hoarding of knowledge is its own reward. Regardless, here's my best shot at cataloguing the MfD-original bloodlines and clan-secrets clans. Note that this does not include bloodlines that were in canon and changed - e.g. Nara gaining a thinker-style bloodline.

Hmm. Do the Nara use Shadow Clones? They would be both dumber and more active and energetic than the original, making perfect aides and errant boys. Or even just party goers. In fact, I could imagine internal events where Nara SC users set up parties and fun get togethers where they can really unwind without any of them actually participating in person. That way they can experience all of the extrovert fun with none of the energy expenditure.

On the side of the clones themselves, how does it feel when, after molding your entire personality around the need to compensate for low energy, you suddenly find yourself with more of it than ever before. All the while having your thoughts work in what you perceive to be complete slugishness that can't keep up with all the things you want to do now. The first few clones must feel like they are on drugs.

I'm writing up a list of seals that will cover various contingencies for us. @eaglejarl @Velorien @OliWhail Feel free to add these to the Jiraiya-seal-list as you wish. Some are especially Jiraiya tier (looking at you, Temporal Congruence seal).

  • Universal Breaching (nonlethal variant) Seal(s): May be multiple seals. Important functions as follows: Flashes brightly enough to (temporarily, if painfully) blind even those who turn and close their eyes. Rings loudly enough to pop the eardrums of those affected; continues ringing for multiple seconds. Vibrates the environment intensely, and releases strongly-smelling substances so strong that not even the sense of taste is unaffected. The goal of this (/these) seals is to disable all of the target's senses, as well as disabling sensory jutsu that depend on them in any way. Given the chance to be used effectively, these may allow a team of chuunin to nonlethally take down a team of jounin. These may be split into the following subseals (entirely separate seals, to be clear):
    • Earbusters (we have these) for hearing
    • Omnidirectional Macerators loaded up with peppers sufficient to saturate the air to cover taste/smell. Add poisons to taste for either lethal or nonlethal variant. (we don't have these, either the peppers in the quantity this would require or the omnidirectional macerators)
    • Flash seals for sight (Don't got these)
    • High-intensity environmental vibrators (don't laugh Kei. Don't got these either.)
    • In order to use these effectively, we will also need defensive seals, etc against our own effects. We've got both the air effects and the hearing effects covered in UGLPF and banshee slayers; what we need other than that are goggles and/or dimming seals.
  • Universal Breaching (lethal variant) Seal(s): As above, but replace the flashing effect with one bright enough to permanently blind, the earbusters with banshee fuckers, and the vibration seals with earthquake seals (if collateral damage is not a concern).
  • Suffocation-Be-Gone seal: Forces away all nonliving debris (no, plants do not count as living) and creates a zone of air three meters wide from the seal's location. This is basically anti-Kakuzu's-death the seal.
  • Poison Purge seal: To be used only in extremes, this seal purges all material from the victim's body not native to it. For reasons unknown to the shinobi, this causes intense GI distress for the following weeks, as the gut microbiome repopulates. It may have other side effects, as well; long term studies were not done, for obvious reasons. (Well, reasons obvious enough other than these being ninjas and not researchers.)
  • Hemophobia Seal: Prevents bleeding in its area of effect. If applied quickly, it can keep alive even those who would be Taken Out.
  • Temporal Congruence Seal: Restores the area of its effect that was present for the entirety of its effect to an average of its state over the past X seconds. In effect, this usually cuts all damage taken to a fifth of what it would be otherwise. Emphasis on usually. If you're bisected, you're likely to have gotten spinal damage sufficient to at least put you out of commission, if not permanently paralyzed; if you get stabbed through the brain, you're going to be lucky if you end up with edema within your skull, and if other important organs are harmed, you'll likely come to issues sooner than later. Note that this cannot be used offensively to harm people; it only affects those that are within its radius for the entirety of X seconds. This has medical uses as well, in slowing the rate of blood loss, and also functions with chakra reserves. It does, however, cause one who has not trained in its use in combat to suffer -3xAB bonus while using it, because one's memory is also subject to this. Using this effectively requires a stunt and an Alertness roll at TN 65. Succeeding at the alertness roll reduces the penalty to 0.5xAB; failing it reduces it to 1.5xAB.

In other words, the penalty is always 1.5x for non-jōnin, usually 0.5x for jōnin, and
the 3x is a fake disadvantage. Right?
Those that don't have the stunt automatically get -3xAB, and the stunt is about 5 times more expensive than it would otherwise be because... your memory is mauled. That said, this is intended to be the kind of seal that Jiraiya might fail to infuse.

Also it's entirely possible that it doesn't make much sense because I wrote this up at like 3 AM.

How did Naruto even decide that her Chakra reserves were big enough? When did the two of them find the time to test this stuff?

Eh whatever. We'll just have to accept Ami as family and give her the lead when it comes to writing up her sister's recovery plan if we want to get anything other than psychotherapy done over the next few updates.

How did Naruto even decide that her Chakra reserves were big enough? When did the two of them find the time to test this stuff?
It is worth noting that, insofar as the KEI is pretty busy right now, and major decisions go through all three coordinators, Naruto must be one of the top ten people she sees on a daily basis.

Also, there's likely at least one or two Nara that know Shadow Clone that she could have used to teach her instead.

Dealing with the Keiko fallout took up the non-headache part of my day. Update delayed.

It hardly matters. Kagome is unharmed; Kagome is unharmed; Kagome is unharmed. Kagome coming to harm is fundamentally incompatible with any coherent linear representation of events. Indeed, the hypothetical monk devoting a thousand years to solving crossword puzzles within a Klein bottle would emerge with only the knowledge that either Kagome is unharmed, or all deities responsible for the farce known as mortal reality are doomed to wish that they had never been.

Minawa, Inner Fire [...] Supposedly like Wakahisa (drain and share chakra?)

So does anyone else see the connection between this bloodline and Noburi's? If bloodlines are artificial --that is to say, that they were made by the Sage, or the result of some sort of chakra-style genetic modification --then there's a clear connection in thought between these two bloodlines. They share the same initial idea, with the experiment being conducted on "fire" aligned chakra users instead "water?"

It could be that the creation of the Inner Fire was less successful than the Vampiric Dew --as seen by the fact that the Wakahisa have a greater chakra capacity than the Minawa, while still having a very similar bloodline (in terms of the "end result"). Perhaps I.F. was created first, but the results weren't quite what the creator(s) wanted, so they tried to create whatever they had in mind again, but with Water Chakra this time --the polar opposite of Fire Chakra.

The only question is whether or not the experiments that led to the creation of the Vampiric Dew was a success, or if it simply failed less than the Inner fire.

Mori, Frozen Skein [...] Analyze plans, saps creativity, has a "greater purpose"

Raiyoke [...] "ingenious without curiousity"

Again, both of these bloodlines share a similar theme --logical analysis --with the Frozen Skein being the superior bloodline. Raiyoke allows for tackling the same ideas/plans/notions from different angles, but the Frozen Skein is vastly superior in terms of sheer analytics. I propose the idea that the creator(s) of bloodlines were looking to create a method of increasing critical analysis and deduction while doing their best to remove emotional blinders, for the purpose of strategic planning/advising.

The Raiyoke was an adequate result, but the curiosity needed to examine information and connect dots had been suppressed too far. Perhaps a new use could be found for this bloodline (examining ready-made plans or preexisting ideas from different angles to find new insights) but the original purpose --which was the creation of ideas and plans, using logic without the haze of emotion --failed. So the creator(s) took what they'd learned from their first experiment (and, perhaps, the many experiments prior to the Raiyoke that weren't successful enough to result in a bloodline at all) and created the Frozen Skein. And they were successful. Perfect advisors without ambition to lead.

At least, that's assuming that my idea of the bloodline's intended purpose is correct. It's entirely possible that I'm wrong and that the Frozen Skein was as much a failure as the Raiyoke.

----
Crackpot idea time: Before the Warring Clans Era, there was a ruling caste of advanced humans/nonhumans that experimented on chakra to create bloodlines. Maybe this ruling caste created chakra itself, maybe chakra has always existed in the MfD iteration of the Naruto-verse, or maybe the creation of chakra was independent of the ruling caste. This ruling caste created bloodlines so that their slaves would be more useful, and thereby more valuable. Something eventually happened (I suspect the Sage led a civil war/revolt against the ruling caste with the help of the bloodline-slaves, and that it was this war) that caused the ruling caste to vanish.

In the aftermath of the war, the Sage died, the Ruling Caste died/vanished, and the slaves were left leaderless. The wielders of these bloodlines grouped together in clan/tribal fashion and began fighting the other groups for what resources still existed. Time and war warped history until the Shodaime led the clans into the modern era by hook and by crook. Modern civilians are either the descendants of these groups that didn't inherit bloodlines, or were part of the lucky few that weren't experimented upon originally.
