Mari quickly passed the will to Hazō before her tears could smudge the ink.
I assume this is the line that's getting retconned?
I, Jiraiya, founder and leader of the Gōketsu Clan, do hereby acknowledge Gōketsu Hazō as my heir. Let this be written into the records of the Village Hidden in the Leaves, and may his reign be illuminated by the Will of Fire.
Does this mean that Jiraiya did not put anything about clan succession in the actual will? That he only wrote it into his private letter to us?

If so, that means he's all over the place. Which means that we should ask everyone else in our clan if their private letters contain anything they deem imminently relevant to us.

Not to mention that there has to be a reason why Jiraiya told Hazou to talk the clan head thing out with Naruto right after handing us a message that has him specifically give it to Naruto if he wants it regardless of our wishes.

I vote we tell our current siblings and ask Naruto wether his letter says anything about Hazou's position as clan head. Provided this thread votes in favor of at least trying to keep the title. Because as is, our letter can literally be cut in half to ensure we are Jiraiya's successor and none could gainsay us without their own letter containing directly contradictory text.
There are a LOT of Chekov's Guns here set up for Orochimaru to just be dead and gone.
I don't think that's how this quest works.
Yup. He now has mental copies of a seal that can only be opened by Tsunade, a seal that can only be opened by Naruto, and a seal that can only be opened by Orochimaru.
A seal that uses specific people's chakra signatures in an if/then/else trigger is still a great thing. In fact, isn't that exactly what we were missing for our chakra sensing vibrator seals?
We still need to adopt the people needing adopting. (Akane, Tenten, anyone else we want to bring in)
You mean research, ask and discuss their adoptions. Everyone but Akane and Tenten are far from done deals. And we don't even know if adoption is that straight forward and easy in cases where the clan head isn't S-rank or supported by the Hokage.

[x] Lore Update

@eaglejarl, @Velorien, @OliWhail:

So you've put us in a position where:

  • We need massive amounts of social, and political context info to do anything.
  • That information is probably hard to generate.
  • There's no reason, in character, why Hazou wouldn't have access to that pile of that information.
I think we need a moment to catch or breath.

Just as a reminder, who gets the Toad Summon contract is not a particularly time sensitive question.

Remember, it's going to take whoever it is weeks and weeks of training and xp investment to get the required skill/stunt. I'm not even sure you can afford to have Noburi or anyone else drop out and spend that much time doing nothing but studying summoning right now. Hell, it might take both Keiko (to be the trainer) and whomever the Summoner is out of action. The Toad Contract may well have to go on a shelf for the next six months.

We need to learn what happened in the BotG ASAP, and discussing potential adoptions can wait until Noburi's got his report ready. So instead I added a scene for intel-gathering (and maybe an emotional Chouza scene) and overhauled the Naruto section with our new information.

Wordcount: 284
[X] Action Plan: Growing Goketsu
  • What did Tsunade say about Mari? Zabuza flashbacks distracted us.
  • BotG: get full story.
    • Noburi: check official Tower reports?
    • Approach someone who was there. Chouza?
      • Chouza: He lost close teammates. Should we suggest collaborating on a memorial?
  • Offer condolences to Ino and Shikamaru.
  • Clan Growth:
    • Akane and Tenten: definite picks.
      • Akane: Offer ASAP, together — she's already family.
      • Tenten: Get clan approval, table it to ask Naruto about later.
    • Lee:
      • He's talented, and all alone now after Gai's death.
      • Could we mitigate his youthful personality? Soundproofing, house rules...?
    • Kagome: Would he train new sealmasters, if they're worthy?
      • Many ninja will be interested. In exchange, they could make us explosives.
    • Crazy idea: inter-village adoptions? Katou?
  • Mari: How was her day? Did she accomplish her goal?
  • Toad Scroll: goes to Noburi.
    • Great chakra reserves, good social skills.
    • Ask Kabuto to check there won't be problems?
  • Naruto:
    • Unless Naruto specifies otherwise, bring Noburi, Keiko, Akane.
    • Jiraiya's posthumous letter likely informed him about the clan and Naruto's relation to it.
    • We promised Jiraiya we'd support him. Be gentle and understanding.
      • Introduce ourselves. Offer condolences. Answer his questions.
      • Give him Jiraiya's will.
      • If appropriate, give a quick rundown of Team Uplift's history and goals. Inform about the rest of the clan.
      • Ask about the Uzumaki council seat. What'll happen to it if he's adopted?
        • Express our concerns about Hiashi and his animosity with us.
        • If Naruto doesn't have a solution, offer three:
          • Vote-in a friendly Hokage, convince them to rule that you wouldn't lose the Uzumaki seat.
          • Naruto designates an Uzumaki heir before getting adopted.
          • Bind our clans so closely they'd be separate only in name.
  • Information-gathering: Akatsuki
    • Noburi: Visit the Tower, grab their profiles.
    • Kagome: Summarize their book.

  • Find out the full story of the Battle of the Gods.
    • Is there an official record of events in the Tower?
    • Reach out to someone who was there, like Chouza.
      • (If/once we know that Shikaku and Inoichi died) This must be really hard on Chouza, to lose teammates so close to him.
      • Ask if he'd like to work with us creating a memorial for the battle.
  • Clan Growth:
    • We still need Noburi's report for the other adoptions, but Akane and Tenten are shoe-ins.
    • Check with the rest of the clan that this is fine. If so, make offers:
      • Akane's family:
        • All of Team Uplift that's available should go.
        • You're family already, so the offer's always open.
      • Tenten:
        • Keiko should go alone.
        • We trust her judgement, and she knows Tenten best.
    • Ask Kagome if he's willing to train new sealmasters, given they're worthy?
      • It's a great opportunity for many ninja, and in exchange we can have them make explosives for us.
  • Toad Scroll:
    • If Naruto isn't eligible, Noburi should have it.
      • Great chakra reserves, good social skills.
      • Maybe ask Kabuto to check that his bloodline won't cause problems with it?
  • Naruto:
    • Jiraiya's message to Naruto probably gives him the basics on the Goketsu and his position in relation to it.
    • If he doesn't specify who he'd like to meet, bring Noburi, Keiko, and Akane.
    • We promised Jiraiya we'd support him. Be gentle and understanding.
      • Introduce ourselves and offer condolences.
      • If he has any questions for us, answer them.
      • Give him Jiraiya's will so he can see what Jiraiya left him.
      • If he's willing and doesn't already know it, give a quick rundown of Team Uplift's story, how we became the Goketsu, and what we stand for.

I'll vote for this if you add a section in for Lee

I'll vote for this if you add a section in for Lee
Lee's not the unanimous shoe-in that Akane and Tenten were, so that's 'discussion of potential adoptees'. I left that out of the plan because we should wait for Noburi to finish his report before discussing the rest of the candidates.

That said, I could make a subsection specifically about addressing Keiko's hangups with the idea, and what solutions we can come up with. Is that okay?

classified information I don't care about…
I don't want to patronize Tsunade, but I really hope she's gonna pass on this classified information she doesn't care about to someone trustworthy who would.
"Hazō! Dude! Hazō! Mr MEW! Can you quit spacing out? Tsunade's asking you a question!"

"Sorry," Hazō said dazedly. "What were we...?"

"Politics, duh," Noburi said. "Tsunade was just done telling us what she thinks of Mari-sensei going for the hat. This is important stuff, so pay attention, all right?"
We should tell our siblings what happened to us right there, apologize for literally not having been able to follow what Tsunade said for a stretch of the conversation and ask them what we missed.

Things we have to do next:
  • Talk to Naruto as soon as we are allowed.
  • Hand the stuff Jiraiya bequeathed our clan to the most appropriate members.
  • Find Akane.
  • Ask Keiko what she wants our role to be in her wedding.
  • Talk politics with Shikamaru.
Things the player base has to decide on soon:
  • Do we want to do anything at all to try and remain clan head? If we do, our attempt could range from being completely open and asking Naruto to give us a chance, to using some form of rhetoric to try and convince him, or even try and keep Jiraiya's opinion on the matter secret from him.
  • What are our plans and backup plans regarding the Hokage election? Who do we approach and what do we tell them?
  • Mari. Trust her blindly or find out what she's doing? If the latter, how much effort do we invest in finding her now rather than later.

Anyone have anything to add to my points!

The latter is fine.

I would caution you heavily against sticking fast to "Wait for Noburi.". It could VERY WELL take months for him to do this.

If anybody wants to adopt foreigners, especially Hana since we desperately need that skillset, it had better happen before Hiashi gets the hat.

Not gonna lie, while Mari is clearly the optimal choice part of me wants to read the hijinks Kagome would get into as a spymaster with a Deceit skill of 1.

I mean, he has experience, definitely knows infosec, and is a hell of an analyst. As long as he isn't personally running assets it might work.

The larger concern would be him diverting resources to locate lupchanzen ranches and preemptively squish the stinkers.

Well if it takes that long to make good decisions, that means all the more reason to not jump the gun and try and decide things early. Lee's too divisive to pick up right away.

Anywho, subsection talking about Lee with Keiko added.

This seems entirely reasonable, but we're not the people you have to poke into action to make sure a Lore Update vote passes.

Keiko, about Lee:
  • You clearly disapprove of adopting him, we should list the pros and cons and see if the downsides are unworkable or if we can keep him from being too difficult.
...can we then proceed to do so? I feel like this is a lot of beating around the bush. Are we trying to convince Keiko of the idea or convince Keiko that she should be open to later being convinced of the idea? I want to do the former.

We should make a memorial for all those who died in the Battle of the Gods. They were comrades, no matter which villages they came from.

I'll give some thought on rephrasing that section to lean more in that direction.

Plan updated to remove the line faflec informed me was irrelevant, and to get the wordcount under 300 again.

Anyone have a clue on how we will survive without a claim to Pangolin gold in less than a week's time? We gave that task to Keiko, but she sure as hell didn't expect to be gone so soon already.
And even if she still lives in town with us, her valuable time will be heavily made use of by Shikamaru as we saw in this update.

Ask for Noburi's report on adoption targets
Noburi has been by our side at Tsunade's. Now that we are clan head these type of blunders are even more painful, even if it's just in front of our siblings.
Hazō will strongly push for this
I am against this until we have heard out wether Keiko has some actually sound reasons to be against this. Adoption means making them family. Keiko's feelings matter. Even if we end up wanting to adopt him despite her not wanting it, offering her compromises is still on the table. And none of this gets completely negated by the fact that she may move out in less than a week.
We and what Nazi blood money?
Have him pitch adoption when he meets with
We should slow down there. If I recall correctly, wasn't there some concrete reason that he hadn't married into any clan yet.
Also, are we sure that Yakushi isn't some minor ninja family? Can we adopt people from minor clans?
Spy Network
  • Review all of Jiraiya's notes on his spy network
  • Identify any contacts that we can secure immediately
  • Schedule a meeting with Agents Black and White
I think we should ask for Mari's assistance on that. Maybe leave the meeting to her entirely.

[X] Action Plan: Growing Goketsu
I like it. But what are we going to do regarding Jiraiya's wish to make Naruto clan head? Even if the answer is to ignore that for now, I think that we should explicitly add that to the plan.

...can we then proceed to do so? I feel like this is a lot of beating around the bush. Are we trying to convince Keiko of the idea or convince Keiko that she should be open to later being convinced of the idea? I want to do the former.
Why are we suddenly in a hurry? Is Lee impoverished or in danger? Is someone else trying to adopt him away from under our noses?
I mean he probably inherited something from Gai, so waiting a week won't kill anyone.

@eaglejarl, @Velorien, @OliWhail, what is the list of all Leaf clans? You were making it (and checking it twice).

Lee is an obvious choice for adoption. We'd like to nab him before someone like the Sarutobi do if possible. The thing is that this likely won't be in everyone else's minds for the next few days while shits flying everywhere, so we have a major league advantage here.
