When the time to post the update draws closer but you have not yet inflicted enough suffering on your players:

To make a lasting impact, one needs to be efficient — which sometimes means ruthlessly sacrificing personal attachments and innocents for power, detachedly thinking of your loved ones as resources, or making decisions for them that would go against their wishes.
  • Is there a balance to be struck, between efficiency and humanity?

You know, it strikes me that, depending on how Hazou phrases this, it might immediately make Ami think of Ryugamine, and start wondering:
  • Is it by accident? Or on purpose?
  • What does Hazou know about him, and their time together?
  • How did he learn what he knows?
  • What is he trying to signal by bringing this up?
And the problem is, that since we don't actually know what their relationship is, we can't predict what conclusions she could reach. Could be a significant source of uncertainty.

That's the gist of my prior objection to that section. I couldn't put it into words, so I didn't pursue it further.

I was wondering, "What's the incidence of civilian-born ninja in canon?"

So I went and examined the teams that made it to the semifinals of the chuunin exam.

And wow, DYK.

1: 4 Leaf teams, 1 Sound, 1 Sand. Protagonist favour much?
2: There are maybe three ninja who don't have an obvious unique advantage, and two of them are Sakura and Tenten.
3: What the fuck, every single team has two guys and one girl on it.
4: Girls can't have nice things, in general. Of the six girls, we have:
- Tenten, who... uses ninja tools.
- Sakura, who... has good Chakra control.
- Temari, who... has a giant fan.
- Bell Ring Genjutsu sound girl. Meh.
- Hinata gets the Byakugan, but she's also got a Caged Bird Seal and is generally screwed over by her family.
- Ino, who gets Psycho Mind Transmission, but who is also set up as Queen Bitch by the narrative.

There are a grand total of zero girls with a hard Taijutsu style. (The Gentle Fist is, uh, gentle.) They're up against Rock Lee, Kiba, Sasuke, Naruto and Chouji.

There is exactly one girl with a unique Kekkai Genkai. (Ino.) Versus: Sasuke, Shikamaru, Aburame, Chouji. (Not counting the two juuchinkiri.)

So, yeah. Not feeling terribly concerned about the fact that my own ninja so far are 90% girls.

Also, not going to canon for answers like this again.

Hinata doesn't have that, she's just under threat of being disinherited or something like that IIRC.

The entire Naruto franchise drops the ball pretty hard on female characters.

- You're right, that's Neiji. Hinata was actually disinherited though, according to the Naruto wiki at least.

And yeah, it sure do.

according to the Naruto wiki at least.
The wiki is really bad for the most part. I'm also more of a manga purist for Naruto in particular, and this reduces the amount of ridiculousness by a fair amount, though a lot of the side characters aren't as fleshed out in the manga (I think TenTen says like 30 words in total or something crazy like that).

It gets better and worse in Part II.

I'll keep in mind that the Naruto wiki sucks.

Meanwhile, my omake's been a bit stalled by a lack of non-Kakero ninja. If anyone wants to toss concepts for personalities, appearances, or kekkai genkai at me, I'd appreciate it: I've got about four bloodline slots still open for NonCanon!Sand.

Bloodline: Wind's Reach

The user can sense through any air that they affect either physically or with chakra (indirect means such as a bellows do not count). There are clan techniques to imbue large quantities of wind with their chakra, giving them a large sensory range; these techniques take relatively little chakra, but do not actually affect wind's motion. The clan makes it out like their techniques are significantly more costly than they are publicly. They gain additional benefit from techniques like Zephyr's Reach or Whispering Wind.
