Runes seem to have an easier time scaling up than playing with light. How much magnification would we get from a dumb telescope rune - a rune that copied our telescope lenses but bigger? From a 5 meter diameter rune? A zone? Three zones?
Prepped it.
Telescope Rune
A rune that, once activated, can allow the user to see faraway objects by acting like a telescope. The telescope will act as if it has an objective lens with a diameter of 4 (or default) zones. The rune has a point at the tip that aims in the direction of wherever the user is looking. Once activated the user may send the same activation signal again to lock the telescope in place.
Prep Telescope Rune. Difficulty Result: Hazou thinks he could maybe do this rune.
That was at eff PS 44, so we could almost certainly do it now.

[X] Action Plan: Mari's Big Day (cont.)
Word Count: <299
Intended Duration: Until Remote Explosive 2.0 or Rift Kicker finishes.
  • Sanity check all with team
  • Misc.
    • Attempt to Summon Cannai at CR 32, if that fails, buy CR 33 and try again.
      • Test if a refilled Hazou SC can be popped to contribute his chakra mid-Summoning
    • Test if Noburi can sense a Capacitor as a valid draining target with the VD. Do NOT drain it. Treat it like a Summon. Environmental chakra very likely contains nature chakra.
    • Move Rifts after the team has burned this location.
      • Take into account the number of remaining Rifts and the known concentrations of hunter-nin
    • Discuss, are there other intel brokers it would be worth visiting? Kagome, are any of the other Rift sites a few days travel from known brokers?
  • Research
    • DoB track 1: Ninja Radar -> Explosiver -> Remote Explosive 2.0
      • If Explosiver is Hard, try a TN120 version. If that is Hard, end the update
    • DoB track 2: Rift-unanchoring -> Rift-kicking
    • Non-DoB track: finish Banshee Lover -> High Capacity Storage (skip if jounin or higher) -> KISS -> Coloured Strobe
      • (If applicable) work with Tenten on KISS specifications, design, and testing.
Updated plan with a few more Misc. things it might be worth discussing.

I'd like to try other tricks to boost this.
Pop a shadow clone mid-summon to refill on it's chakra, have Noburi push extra chakra into us while we summon, etc.
I agree it's worth trying but if I were in the QM seat I would say no fucking way am I allowing VD or SC to be even more broken lol
*eyebrow rises* Were you spying on QM chat? Because that literally happened almost word for word. Discussion drifted after that, so there hasn't been a final determination but I definitely wouldn't hold your breath.

Citation, please, I can't find any statements to that effect in a brief search. Even if this is the case, and even if the plant's reserves only fill at harvest-time, it would dramatically reduce the utility of the rune to only drain chakra during that brief portion of the cycle.
@faflec already answered this but I had already gone and done the quoting so I'll post a longer version of what he quoted:
The heat and frequent rain had accelerated the growth of the rice plants, and the farmers were falling behind. They had only gotten to this field today, and the plants were already on the cusp of adulthood. In a few days or a week the coleoptile, currently soft and blunt, would finish hardening and sharpening while the rootclaws would become sturdy enough to support locomotion. If the crew didn't get the plants pithed and stripped soon then the entire field might walk away and there'd be nothing left for next year. Plus, these plants had been harvested for generations; everyone knew perfectly well that if they were ever allowed to fully mature then they would seek out their tormentors for retribution.

"Hey! You! Back to work!" The overseer came trotting over on his horse, riding crop upraised.

"Yes, sir!" Rikio quickly bent back to his work. Long practice made his hands quick and sure; both hands went on the stalk, thumbs facing in with right hand over left. Right hand went up, stripping all the coleoptiles with their delicious seeds off and tossing them over his shoulder into the wicker basket on his back. Left hand went down under the water, following the stalk down to where it met the rootclaws. He kept his wrist close the stalk as the still-soft claws frantically thrash at him. Thumb and finger went under the root bundle to where the bulb was growing, dug in, twisted and yanked, and tossed the bulb into the basket. He'd gotten the full bulb on the first go, so the plant immediately went quiescent. He swiped his face across his shoulder to try to get the stinging sweat out of his eyes, then took one step forward to the next plant.

@eaglejarl @Paperclipped @Velorien , we're still waiting on the prep day results from Chapter 681, including three major anti-Konan countermeasures (Chakra Shredder Pulse, Kagome's Tears, Let's-Fuck-With-Sealmasters). If possible, could we get these soon-ish? Our confrontation with Akatsuki seems to be approaching quite quickly, and one or more of these might prove crucial.
We have tentative answers and are waiting for consensus.

Actually...

@eaglejarl @Velorien @Paperclipped

Could we get clarification on this before we commit to a long chain of research?

In the optimal scenario we can get barrage fire from RERs without adding Landmine (primed) functionality to the rune, is that something we can do? Or is a primed rune required for effective barrage fire from a Remote Explosive variant?

In this scenario, rather than using a MARS to activate the barrage, we'd signal our SCs (perhaps by popping a clone?) and have them all activate their RERs at the same time. Does the vanilla design of RER allow for barrage fire in those circumstances?
@eaglejarl @Velorien @Paperclipped

Now that Hazou is out of the apprenticeship phase of learning mednin, can he determine if he can understand Noburi's jargon about the chakra water well enough to research a rune replicating the effect (with Noburi's help) without a prep day?

Would spending another prep day (and FP) be enough to determine this?

If not, does Hazou have a feeling about what level of mednin is necessary to understand Noburi's jargon? Would spending a prep day on the rune determine that?
@eaglejarl @Velorien @Paperclipped

Could get answers answers on these pretty soon?

They're immediately pertinent to our next research projects.

they are also chasing Orochimaru of the Sannin. He has committed some crime against the western alliance, and now everyone sends their hunters to search for him, reaching even here.
"there are/were hunters in Marsh, asking after Orochimaru" seems like the kind of local info Syoma is likely to be accurate about.

If so, that's.... really interesting. Oro sees Pain as an existential threat, so he's not just giving up on the rift and living the quiet life. I see two main possibilities for what could have happened.

Possibility 1: Akatsuki got pushy.
After Hazou's disappearanc, Akatsuki suspect Leaf is trying to pull something, and decide they want to check Orochimaru's work also. They're hesitant to forcibly breach The Basement, but Itachi tells Naruto "order Oro to give my SC full access, or we carpet-bomb leaf". Naruto relays this to Orochimaru, who decides to bug out rather than roll over(possibly on secret order from Naruto, possibly on his own).
Orochimaru is now in the same position as Hazou: missing, preparing to either Return To Leaf or Yoink.

Possibility 2: Oro!yoink
Orochimaru did the same maths we did, built a runic weapon, noticed he's an S-ranker with >4000cp (enough chakra to summon Manda and still fight on his own), stole the rift for himself, and went missing.
He's working on some mix of rune research and afterlife exploitation, and either constantly relocating or preparing a doom fortress. He may or may not have permakilled Hidan when attacking the rift.

If it's possibility 1, that changes fairly little for Hazou, other than making it Orochimaru who could pull the trigger on a rift assault, rather than Naruto(who currently has no way to manipulate the rift).

If it's possibility 2, that changes ~everything.
Instead of sacrificing every other consideration at the altar of research deadlines, we can step back and chill out a bit.
We have to stay missing, but short/medium term, we can research combat seals, raise combat stats, learn minatosealing, do scroll hunts, follow other plot threads, spam unstagnation adventures, etc. generally ramp up, adventure, and roam around like mini-sanin while we focus on coming into the fullness of our power. Very fun!
Longer term.... Orochimaru is a huge hecking problem, and is now the presumptive final boss of MfD.

So there's been some discussion about what to do for Noburi's next 20. I think we might want to pick up Pain Supression.

There's no reason to ever level it past 20 and at level 20 it can be applied to Severe Physical Consequences. It lowers the penalty to -AB instead of -2AB at the cost of the natural healing that day.

We probably would usually prefer to heal, but it gives us options if Hazou takes a Severe out on a mission.

thanks. bearish on pain suppression then. even acknowledging we'll go into danger more often than previously usual and the sort of danger we'll get is more likely to produce physical rather than mental severes, the relative value of prevention vs cure on top of the drawbacks of pain suppression make me still prefer surging seas or anything else that has an obvious application and could use the XP/20-slot. if nothing else seemed useful then pain suppression would be cool but as it is we have options.

Hm.

A preventative variant of Pain Suppression would be pretty good, I think. Use it before combat and it prevents you from taking penalties from consequences you take mid-combat.

I feel like Hazo keeps eating Mental Consequences so frequently that it's almost like it's on purpose. It's amazing we keep eating them even after grinding our Resolve so far, at some point we might push Resolve to the point where Itachi can Izanagi us and we go 'meh'.

I think you're underestimating the frequency with which we need to do combat now. It's a lot. Like we're about to need 1 combat unstag per in-game 2-months. The Severes will come.

We uhhhh do take 2 Mental Consequences on purpose at the end of each research cycle. Hazou has had dozens if not hundreds of Mental Consequences by now.
