Fair enough! Thanks for talking it out with me.

Ah, for the record, I happen to disagree. At 200CP each, every 2 genin allows us to do another rune research track.
So capturing just 4 genin doubles the number of runes we can research.
I think that's worth a lot.
No problem. And to prove myself wrong since i can think of something to mention here, I don't know how commonly genin will have CR 20 or how precisely we can target and nab those. It's a doublecost stat and Hazo had larger reserves than a small but notable fraction of new jonin when he had, what, CR 30? To me it's not impossible that some near-chunin genin might have CR at 20 for whatever reason but it seems like a small demographic we can't reliably target who would be more trouble than usual for genin.

I'm concerned that my brain is being cheese again -- have we actually shown him teleporting? I know people are guessing that he stole the teleport jutsu from Conjura but I didn't think he had done it onscreen.
No, we've never seen him teleport.
I assumed that observing the technique with the sharingan gave him 1 rank automatically, even if he hasn't chosen to level it further, but I could be incorrect.

Are you sure that's MfD canon as opposed to Naruto canon? The only times I can think of that we've shown Amaterasu being used was when Itachi nuked the Dragon and when he nuked the snake corpse as a flex on the team. Both times, the fire stayed on the target creature.
A young... Kangaroo(?) touched some of the leftover fire long after the battle and died.
From this, I concluded that Amaterasu probably spreads on things that have chakra(expanding to engulf the target, spreading to the 'roo) but don't spread otherwise.

Has that been established in MfD canon? Thus far I think we've only shown it burning the Dragon and the snake, as far as I know.
It hasn't been made explicitly clear, but:

In addition to the uses you mentioned already, back when we first encountered Itachi and Hidan, we saw some black Fire burning in braziers they were using for... I guess looking cool? Illumination? They really are a dramatic bunch. Anyways, it implies that it can burn for quite a long time if Itachi can just leave it around. Or maybe he has some other secret black Fire ninjutsu, but my first thought would be that it is indeed Amaterasu.

In addition to this, Orochimaru called it 'unblockable' which implies to me certain things about armor techniques, obstacles, etc. It sounds like it straight up cannot be extinguished prematurely, and it will eat through anything you shield yourself with. But it's also true that Oro doesn't know everything and he too has a penchant for melodrama.

Overall, I think erring on the side of "will burn through pretty much anything and keep on burning it" isn't unreasonable, even if it isn't literally everything. That being said, I expect force domes to be among the most durable things that currently exist in the entire world, so if anything can resist it, Force Dome would probably be a good candidate.

On that topic, I'm more concerned about Samehada potentially eating a force dome since seals and runes often involve chakra constructs in our current understanding. Can we cook up something that affects chakra constructs some way or another and see if it works on force domes? Unsure if the dome/wall/etc is an invulnerable force construct created by chakra or if the invulnerable force shape is the chakra construct.

Current understanding of seals and runes is that they do not involve chakra unless designed to. According to Hazo and Kagome, it's magic. I've asked the QMs about whether seals and runes make chakra constructs or not but have not gotten an answer yet.

Ah, thanks. Hmm. Did any of the MS chain do anything with chakra constructs specifically? I forget if it was that or just nearby chakra some of them were handling.

  1. Creates a probably-invisible, tiny chakra construct that immediately dissipates.
  2. Creates a chakra construct that intakes a huge amount of environmental chakra, then slowly dissipates.
  3. Another chakra construct. This one holds the environmental chakra in it for a few minutes before dissipating.
  4. Another chakra construct. This one interacts with the environment around it in some unknown way.
  5. The same chakra construct as above, except the interactions are displayed on the seal. Kagome thinks there are similarities with his chakrascope seal.
  6. Another chakra construct that interacts with the environment around it, but this one channels an even huger amount of chakra.
  7. The same chakra construct as above, with interactions displayed on the seal. A scrawled note says "To do - ask Rin about med nin uses?"
  8. A variant of the seal above, taking in even more ambient chakra.

Yeah, the Jinchūriki Seal Chain is one of the few examples we have of seals that explicitly create chakra constructs.

The other, amusingly, being the one that makes a giant middle finger–shaped chakra construct that only the Hyūga can see.

Could we please get an official WoG on how Hazo thinks seals work?

Some of us have been attempting to come up with rune ideas to interact with the process (usually to prevent seals from working), but there appears to be some disagreement on how seals operate.

There was a PONWoG from EJ on the discord (which is not binding in any way) on how seals worked.

"ponwog: You infuse the seal with a tiny bit of chakra that is sufficient to generate a construct. The construct pulls in ambient chakra to generate the rip to the Out and guide the effect produced by the rip."

Is this close to what Hazo believes in happening with seals?

My comments on seals interacting with the Out were a mistake and will be retconned, sorry about that. Every sealing lineage has a different view on exactly what seals are and how they work. Kagome's lineage (which now includes Hazō) will tell you that chakra is like a sandbox, which can produce powerful effects but is ultimately limited to what the Sage wanted to be possible. By breaking out of the sandbox (analogy for player benefit, not something Kagome says: programming exploits), you can use tiny amounts of chakra to manipulate the raw magic of the universe directly. This can do things that ninjutsu can't (e.g. 5SB), but because you're working in a more powerful magic system, you can also cause catastrophic mistakes, up to but not necessarily including breaking holes Out of the universe.

Alternatively, here's the build-plan that a couple of us cooked up on discord. Most of the credit goes to the glorious @ProperAttorney, King of the Spreadsheets. Long may he reign!

Plus, we'll be spending banked TH notes XP throughout.

You know what, for the lulz I'll keep maintaining this.

Step four eight complete and on the sheet!

(Actually, it was complete a while ago. I just misremembered that the list only said to go to 20 instead of the higher 28 (or 26?) we were planning on actually raising it to at the time. We've since expanded our soft-cap quite a bit.)

No problem. And to prove myself wrong since i can think of something to mention here, I don't know how commonly genin will have CR 20 or how precisely we can target and nab those. Ah, I'm under the impression that a blooded Genin has 150-200 CP, which means ~2 genin per sealing track(350 per infusion).
If it was just 100 CP per genin, I'd... still want to inquire, but I'd be substantially less committed to campaigning for it.

This is my current medium-term roadmap for Hazou's build, based primarily on work by @_The_Bomb and @ProperAttorney.
  1. Sealing 53 -> 54 [108 XP]
  2. Primordial Sealing 31 -> 32 [64 XP]
  3. Alertness 36 -> 39 [114 XP]

  6. Roki + RRB Combination Stunt [100 XP]
  7. Medical Knowledge 10 -> 20 [155 notes XP]
  8. Some Earth Jutsu 1 -> 10 (for pyramid filler) [27 XP]
  9. Technique Hacking 10 -> 33 [32 XP, 1000 notes XP]
  10. Athletics 39 -> 49 [445 XP]
  11. Deceit 24 -> 30 [189 XP]
  12. Technique Hacking 33 -> 40 [518 XP]
  13. NMRStbWCUBS (NtSCMaNTL) Stunt [125 XP]
  14. Minato(?) Sealing 0 -> 26 [702 XP]
3061 XP, 1000 banked TH notes XP, 155 banked MK notes XP
If you're interested in this sort of thing, I would love it if you could check out my prospective builds for Noburi and Kei on this spreadsheet.

I tried to make the pyramids as clear as possible for illustration purposes. Let me know what you think!

Not something that's very useful for our current situation, but it might help us understand chakra regeneration better:

Anti-Capacitor Rune
Rune

Repels environmental chakra, creating an area around the rune with no or very little ambient chakra.

AFAIK, we currently don't understand how chakra regeneration works. Oro said we filter chakra from the environmental mixture:
"So when a ninja uses chakra…" Hazō said.

"They are solely using a single phase of chakra. A human's chakra coils filter human chakra from the ambient mixture – analogous to lifting a stone up to the top of a hill. It creates tension and latent movement. The boulder wishes to roll down the hill and gains speed and power by doing so. Its movement can knock down trees if released correctly. In the same way, filtered chakra within a human's coils can be returned to the ambient mixture in such a way as to produce useful effects. This naturally disproves the explanation provided to you of nature chakra – were it simply a broader set of components from the ambient mixture, it would require less work to separate, and would thus release less energy when used in ninjutsu. Instead, nature chakra releases more energy when used."
However, Oro may not actually be right about this description. Chakra doesn't seem to obey conservation of energy in the way this would suggest. Take Elemental Mastery - the EM nuke works because the chakra effect instantly cools any gas entering the AOE, regardless of how much gas that is or how much work it has to do. That's not the behaviour of something with a limited amount of energy to expend before it runs out. MEW is another point against Oro's explanation; it's possible to create matter ex nihilo with less than 40 CP. If Oro's hypothesis were correct and there was a limited amount of energy associated with chakra returning to the ambient medium, that limit would have to be vast, and chakra coils would have to do a correspondingly vast amount of work. (Oro himself obviously doesn't believe this; but Oro doesn't know about the EM nuke, and doesn't know that matter should require vast amounts of energy to create. And it may not, in MfD world; but together with the EM nuke working it's highly suggestive.)

So I think Oro's hypothesis, at least the part about phases returning to the ambient mixture, is probably not correct. Since we don't know what experiments he did to get to the things he told us and can't judge their validity, we should also consider the possibility that his model for chakra regeneration is flawed.

Hence this rune. It's a very simple test; turn on the rune, have someone spend their chakra and sit around in the AoE, and see if their chakra regenerates. It's something Oro may not have been able to do; this quote is weak evidence for that:
"Ambient chakra is a mixture of numerous subtypes of chakra, which, apart from human chakra for humans and nature chakra for summons, are currently impossible to interact with, survey, and study. All humans possess an affinity for human chakra, though only ninja are capable of using it effectively."
He may well just have meant that the individual subtypes are impossible to interact with, but a literal reading of this statement says that he can't manipulate ambient chakra, in which case he may not have been able to test whether or not it's required for chakra regeneration.

Of course, the problem with this experiment is it would take chakra. Chakra to research the rune (even assuming it's as easy as Capacitor, it'll still take at least one cycle, possibly more), and more chakra lost from testing it, if we have to leave someone in there overnight - though we might be able to avoid that, since the Chakra Weaver stunt (for TH) was described as letting you observe your own chakra regeneration directly. But it might be worth doing, if and when we get back to a situation of having chakra to spare.

I'm voting for your plan and would like to express interest in this. Here's a WC-optimized version of your plan with that chunk in it (WC includes the Duration line to be on the safe side, though I'm not sure if that's meant to count):

[] Action Plan: The (Sand)worm's Turn
Word Count: 295
Duration: Until we reach our next destination (Until then/1.4 solar)
  • All Uplift
    • We are closing in on Hazou's most pessimistic timeline for Akatsuki opening the Rift (3 months objective)
      • Kei - probability distribution for time remaining?
    • Discuss contacting Orochimaru via dead drop on the Seventh Path to set up a future signal for "return to Leaf immediately".
      • This contradicts Naruto's orders, but what he doesn't know he can't leak to Itachi.
      • Orochimaru is unlikely to be compromised by Akatsuki.
      • Orochimaru might try to harm Hazou through the dead drop.
      • Logistical workarounds necessary, since Arachnids swore not to pass messages to Hazou/Kagome - but doable with some creative interpretation.
        • E.g. have an oathsworn Arachnid get an Arachnid not oathsworn to pass the messages once.
    • If the team approves, compose a suitable dead-drop and leave it for Orochimaru.
      • Suggest including, and if approved include, research notes for Force Domes as payment/additional defenses for Leaf.
    • Beast defense in the deep desert is too dangerous, time to move.
      • Hazou favors Fang or the southwestern coast of Wind. Any other suggestions?
      • Kei, how feasible would it be to capture a pirate ship and use that?
        • Mobile base, difficult to find, pirates as chakra sources.
        • Does anyone know how to sail?
  • Kei
    • Your leadership skills are getting rusty.
    • Is there anything you could do to practice leadership with your assigned Pangolin team?
    • Alternatively, could you practice by contracting some jounin Pangolins?
    • Take as much time on the Seventh Path as you need.
  • Research
    • DoB tracks: Remote Explosive, Landmine, Storm Rune, Air Leadening
      • Move to the next if harder than Easy
    • Non-DoB: ELF Explosives
    • Prep Days: Null Rift, Microrift Rift-Maker, Pathbound Rift-Maker
  • Head for the agreed destination after ELF Explosives finish
    • Use ELFE on the TR for the camp.
Looks like an improvement to me, throwing my vote in.

@Kyreneryk feel free to rename the op to reclaim control of the fork if you want.

I admit, I'm not crazy about the bolded choices, but most of them are just difficulty checks, so I have little meaningful investment in arguing against them. If there's a push towards actually attempting to research them, then I'll do more. But until then... looks good. Thanks for taking up the burden of action plans, lately.

I'm not super attached, do you have alternate suggestions for how to make a rift to research rift runes?

Poke Orochimaru for his Rift notes in the dead drop. We can purchase them with Iron Earth or something.
I am moderately opposed to:

1) Letting Oro know we are also researching Rifts (why would we need to but to oppose him?)
2) Opening a wider communications channel with Leaf, a yes/no "drop everything and get back to Leaf" Hazousignal is fine, but we burned those bridges for a reason.

So I'd prefer to not

The chakra beasts here are too dangerous, time to move.
  • Hazou favors Fang or the southwestern coast of Wind. Any other suggestions?
I'm not sure the rationale for going to these locations, but Akatsuki's spy network is apparently "strongest in the minors, in Sand...". I'm uncertain that going here is the best idea, as opposed to (not having thought too much about it) an island in the middle of fuckoff nowhere.
