Example Contest Jutsu
There is an extensive list of stuff that came in through the contest and is now available to you. Here are a few examples:

Jutsu
  • Detect Chakra. A non-elemental jutsu that gives you a momentary flash of awareness of the strength and location of all chakra sources within a certain range (range based off jutsu level). This includes animals, plants, bugs, ninja, civilians, etc.
  • Wind Shaper. A jutsu that allows you to form constructs out of air. They are invisible but solid. They can be formed in mid-air but cannot be moved, so you can use them as a jumping-off point.
  • Wind Fountain Field. Creates fountains of air.
    • Duration is 30 seconds.
    • Once per round for the duration you can create a melee-sized fountain of anabatic wind somewhere in your zone.
    • Treat it as an attack jutsu to determine if you hit an unwilling target. Roll (Level) vs their Athletics.
    • The wind doesn't normally cause damage but it will throw medium-sized objects (e.g. people) into the air. This is useful for deflecting kunai, throwing enemies around, or giving yourself a boost on your leaping.
    • If there is a ceiling to smash the person into then the fountain WILL cause damage. This works like a standard (Level) vs Athletics roll.
    • The wind always goes up (i.e. directly opposite the shortest-path line to the center of the earth, since the players will definitely ask about reference frames), not at an angle.
    • The bottom of the fountain must be on a solid, unmoving surface. (The ground, the floor, a skytower, etc.) Moving objects (e.g. a board that you dropped off a skytower) are not valid targets.
    • The fountains persist until the jutsu expires, then dissipate.
  • Chameleon jutsu. Grants a bonus on Stealth checks. (This is the one that Tanaka Yoshi submitted.)

If anyone has jutsu ideas but doesn't know how to translate them into the system, feel free to message me or quote this post with them, and I'll translate them into a proper writeup. I've made a bunch of jutsu already and done something similar with @RandomOTP 's jutsu ideas before, so don't be afraid to ask. The more stuff we make here, the more likely we end up with cool things available to us and more power in the hands of other Leaf ninja.

Can I suggest alternate mechanics for this? Make it based on Alertness AB and it can be a stunt instead, if it's something you want to be generally useful without either excessive training, or being too useful for how much XP is put in.

Also, what level does Wind Fountain Field need to be at to consistently generate Aspects/tags?

ALSO WIND SHAPER IS THAT JUTSU USED IN THAT ONE NOT-CHUUNIN EXAMS INTERLUDE

Speak for yourself, reading Akane bringing her youthful energy to talk with the dogs sounds like the whole but plot-processing content I appreciate.
Remind me of how often we get to see Keiko interacting with Pangolin?

We won't get to see the dogs very often if Akane gets the scroll.

Feel free to ping me, too, I've got 29 pages of techniques I've DMed to the QMs. Which reminds me, I need to work on that technique I was working on earlier today...

A few different scenes in different chapters with her negotiating with the boss, scenes recruiting and talking to her Tessera, and quite a few conversations with her cute little anthropologist. Admittedly not many recently, but that could also be because she just hadn't been in the story as much recently due to how things went, which is much less likely with Akane.

Remind me how many scenes recently we've had that focused purely on Akane? I mean, don't get me wrong, we'd get some, but far less than we would with Hazou, is my point.

Besides, Hazou could use some people to make him loosen up. ...And also to encourage him toward, ah, greater loyalty.

My head is pounding, give me a few time.

Preliminary thoughts:
  1. Everyone and their mother should get at least 1 level in the Yamanaka mental stability jutsu.
  2. I like the thought of Akane as the Dog Summoner more (she's about to get rank and should get extra firepower) but EJ wants Hazou, so I'm leaning more towards that out of hand.
  3. Akane reading through Jiraiya's life's work might give her an ego boost by sheer osmosis.

[X] Action Plan: Talk to Tsunade

[x] Action Plan: Talk to Tsunade

Still mildly terrified that we'll get killed so hard that Hazou wakes up in Skyrim, but... Yeah, I like it.

[X] An Implosion of Steam

Still not big on the "let's fight Cthulu while we're still recovering from looking at his wall art." Though I wouldn't be opposed to fighting lovecraftian entities as a special event --though I'd likely be just as, if not more, terrified than when we had a Surprise Itachi almost look us to death.

[X] Training Hazou: Yama-not gonna pass this up

[X] Training Akane: Yama-not gonna pass this up
[X] Training Noburi: Yama-not gonna pass this up
[X] Training Hazou: Yama-not gonna pass this up
[X] Training Keiko: Yama-not gonna pass this up

Now. How do we politely tell Orochimaru and Tsunade that they should begin using it?
EDIT: Without dying... preferably.

Feel free to ping me, too, I've got 29 pages of techniques I've DMed to the QMs.

Wait. Should we be DMing them to the QMs? I've just been posting them here... was that rude of me?

JIRAIYA'S NOTES: *an entire novel's worth of self-flagellation*

AKANE: ... :(
Okay, I get what you're saying, but hear me out...

JIRAIYA'S NOTES: *self-flagellation, but then he makes amends to Tsunade, brings Oro back, meets then marries Mari, sees his personal WoF philosophy validated, falls in love with Mari, connects with that crazy Hazou kid, and ultimately dies a better man than before he'd met Team Uplift*

AKANE: *Inspired by Jiraiya's VERY Youthful Life*

---

Edit: Typing this out makes me realize just how awesome Jiraiya's character arc was. Hey, @eaglejarl, @Velorien, @OliWhail? Would it be possible to get random interludes from Jiraiya's personal journals? Like: "Dear Diary: Today I met Hazou. Kid's insane and has some crazy aspirations. He's probably going to die before he reaches half of them... Still, he makes me think." Or maybe just Mari's POV as she reads them?

I was originally fully on team
[x] Dog scroll: Hazō

but I've definitely been convinced to
[] Dog scroll: Akane
(EDIT: I've been convinced, Akane has better things to be doing -- looks like she's getting the otters, then?)
(much as I'd love to give our boy the doggos. I'm pretty in favor of hard push for either Kraken or Otters, relatively soon [FOOM be damned].)
(I thought we were hoping Porcupine to Haru? I mirror the thoughts to his loyalty etc, but think that regardless he's a really good candidate for them.)

[X] Training Akane: Yama-not gonna pass this up
[X] Training Noburi: Yama-not gonna pass this up
[X] Training Hazou: Yama-not gonna pass this up
[X] Training Keiko: Yama-not gonna pass this up
since IV has vetted this, I'm assuming it's sensible. Where is Yamanaka jutsu posted?

will try and go through plans soonish

Akane isn't getting Shadow Clone permissions if she spends the next 2 months studying summoning full time xor Asuma will be mad as heck with us.

Either of these is just so much more important to get done (the first ASAP, averting the second always).

Come on now, lets be tactical here socially and for people that aren't just Hazou as well.

[X] Dog Scroll: Hazō

Stunt description is here.

Explanation for the training plans. Everyone gets the Yamanaka training jutsu because, even though it's suboptimal for FOOM right now (as per Noumero's maths idk the details), it's literally a mental health jutsu that helps keep people sane, and that's worth its weight in gold.

Hazou's plan adds on CR 26 because that's our goal for clearing Asuma's SC requirements. With CR 26 we have enough chakra to make one clone and have enough left over for a spar (three rounds, half-strength boosting), which puts us in a state where all we need to do is hold 2 clones for 15 minutes and pop them with no pain, which we should be capable of once the Consequence ends (with perhaps a FP expenditure on an aspect or reroll if we need to). Once we do that we're able to use SC however we please.

Definitely wasn't rude, but thank you for being concerned. I don't recall any of the QMs saying that we'd rather have it in DM, but my brain is cheese.

There are advantages to both -- if it's in DM then we can say "no way on jutsu number 3" before anyone gets attached to it. If it's in public then the players can debug things for us before we have to spend effort on it.

Let me check with the others for policy.
I'm pretty in favor of hard push for either Kraken or Otters, relatively soon
Expectation management: Y'all found the Pangolins because of a lucky roll (Mari spotting the tapir tracks). Without that you would not have gotten it. The Porcupine scroll was something of a gimme. I want to be sure that we haven't given the wrong impression: Finding the remaining scrolls is going to require a lot of effort on y'all's part, if it's possible at all. I say this because I don't want to be in a situation where a month from now we are fielding accusations of punishing y'all by not letting you get the thing, or whatever else the phrasing might be. These are legendary artifacts and they aren't typically found in a copper-level loot box that you buy at the corner store.

By the way, I thought I announced this, but maybe I'm being a cheese brain again:

The update for chapter 350 was edited to have another scene, specifically the end of the contest. If anyone missed that, it's there.

Was trying to see whether ice can save our 100 billion ryo debt if chocolate fails.
At
A: 100-300 ryō / kg
for the price of ice, we need (optimistically) bout 3.33 million kg of ice. At a density of 919 kg/m^3 that's bout 3600 m^3 of ice. Which is about a cube with a side length of 15 m. This sounds easy enough to do with Akane's EM in winter.
Unfortunately storage seals are where the dream ends. Standard storage seals can store 100kg (kg constraining us more than m^3) it'll take bout 33k storage seals to store.

To expand on my viewpoint:

Universe A: Press X to give Hazo Scroll

Pros:
-Hazou gets the dog scroll
--(EJ gets the fun he really wanted)
- Akane gets Shadow Clone
-- We get to start one of the Gouketsu kids on FOOM along a skill path that gets it done in a way (less column juggling, shes got CR already, Fire jutsu fuckin rock house) that converges to maximum OP quickest.
-- Akane gets to be even more of a Ms. Badass asskicker.

Cons:
- Hazou FOOM set back by 2 months

Difficulty of getting to this timeline:

Trivial. Just press X.

Universe B: Give Akane scroll, no SC.

Pros:
-Akane gets dog scroll
- Hazo gets to FOOM asap

Cons:
- Akane doesn't get SC.
-- The Clan doesnt get someone doing the FOOM as quickly as it couldve.
-- Asuma's justification for not giving the technique to Kagome sort of implies it'll be a while before he gives a high value target like a summoner access to SC without some major grease on the wheels.

Difficulty:

Trivial. Just give the scroll to Akane.

Universe C: Akane gets scroll and Shadow Clone

Pros:
-Akane gets SC and the scroll
- Hazou isn't setback

Cons:
- Whatever we do to get here has a high chance of pissing Asuma off.

Difficulty:

I can't see a way to do this, honestly.

Asuma won't give Akane the SC technique if shes training summoning, because the purpose here is to get the notes decoded ASAP, and these are mutually exclusive.

Asuma will also revoke the scroll (its in the contest rules) if the summoner candidate gets rejected by the Dogs or can't complete the training in a timely fashion. He doesn't want to let a strategic resource like this sit any longer now that its role as Contest submission bait Prize is over.

Given that Asuma is pretty mad with Hazou and by extension the Gouketsu in general, I don't see him gritting his teeth and allowing us to have our cake and eat it too.

Universe A seems ideal to me. Two people skyrocketing to Jiraiya-tier in the next couple years is better than one. Arguably better by a lot, since if Akane goes full combat and we have the Dog scroll, we'll be able to actually do more of the socials and sealing build instead of sprinting to full out Might Gai mode (since thats quicker than not). So theres a bit of a plus there. Akane will also peak a lot faster than Hazou, since her build is less uniform at the moment so can spike better. Also fire jutsu are fucking insane.

Even though I want to basically spend the next forever doing sealing research, this seems like objectively the best choice to me? Given that it also optimizes EJ's fun and creates interesting plot threads and allows for cool 7P stuff, that sort of makes it a no brainer on my end.

What are everyone else's thoughts?

I am having a hard time buying into the premise of your argument.

Which boils down to Asuma denying Akane SC if she spends her time training for the summoning scroll instead, if I am understanding it correctly.

We have this from the previous update:

If you'd rather go to the Exams and get your promotion on the winner's step, go to his office tomorrow and he'll work with you to set up a training plan that will fill some of the areas you haven't had time to work on until now—you're already a better fighter than most of the people likely to show up at the Exams, so he figures you can take care of that on your own."

Which implies that Asuma is fine with Akane spending her time to learn SC + training for Exams. What is to stop her from declining to go to the Exams and substitute that time slot for summoner training instead?

My reading is that following the regiment for either would take roughly the same amount of time. Time she isn't helping Kagome decode the notes, with Asuma fully being aware she isn't. And it's not like we don't know another summoner who happens to know SC with Keiko, so clearly that alone can't be the disqualifying factor.

I admit, I do want to read Hazou negotiate with summons and I wouldn't be heartbroken or anything if he ended up getting a scroll first, but there are some factors that made me prefer Akane over him:

Akane will get sent to missions, there is no stopping this. Her having SC and Summoning will make it much more likely she will come back alive. I care for Hazou staying alive as well, obviously, but I have confidence in the hivemind to come up with plans to defeat enemies that are equal or even slightly higher than his level even with "just" SC. Akane as an NPC does not have the advantage of the hivemind making plans for her.

(Also, yay, self-confidence boost. Maybe. Hopefully.)

I am also worried the Dogs might not accept Hazou as the summoner due to him being directly responsible for the wars on the Seventh Path. There is also a chance that dogs value loyalty above else, and well, Hazou happens to be a former missing-nin whereas Akane isn't. In fact, "loyal" would be one of the defining traits of hers. And as you said yourself, rejection by the summons could be grounds for Asuma to revoke the scroll.

This is also why the meta argument of EJ having said he'd like to write Hazou having the Dog scroll is rubbing me the wrong way. Not because I don't want him to not have fun - because I do - but because him wanting Hazou to have the Dogs doesn't mean the Dogs want Hazou. Obviously, EJ would know himself how the Dogs would feel about Hazou but us players do not due to HDK.

And in my opinion, you can't just dismiss legitimate concerns because of this.

(And to be clear, this isn't about me not trusting the QMs. I just don't think they would be allowed to tell us things Hazou wouldn't be able to figure out himself. And I don't want to put them in the position of having to do so because of this.)

[X] Dog scroll: Hazō

I think the idea that giving Akane the Dog scroll will increase her confidence is nonsense. All it will do is that she is going to try even harder and push herselve even more.

Just a list of things:
  • Hazou saved her from the Liberator camp
  • Came back against three genin to help
  • Trained her as her "master"
  • Managed to bring her back to her parents
  • Confessed to her (then got kicked out)
  • Then acutally came back to Leaf and founded a clan
  • Broke her heart
  • Then adopted her
  • Then somewhat fixed his flaws, so that she wants to get back together

And now Hazou, who has tried to get a scroll since Jiraiya has died (Snake scroll, Porcupine scroll and now actually the dog scroll) gives or even allows her to simply have the scroll?

Yeah, that's not going to make her more confident, just more driven to please Hazou.

Also, Akane can be somewhat disobedient, she didn't listen to Kagome and Hazou with during the blotch incident and she just randomly walked into the Oracle trial, got drugged/genjutsued and didn't even say anything.

And the Tsunade thing.

I really don't want to have to work through her to work with the only other scroll we currently have, if we had two scrolls I wouldn't mind, but not when it's the only one.

We also do kind of need the power boost for Hazou, Akane is already stronger and with the right contracts we have way more options to deal with anything.

I have confidence in the hivemind to come up with plans to defeat enemies that are equal or even slightly higher than his level even with "just" SC.

Hi! Welcome to this quest, how did you find us?

This is also why the meta argument of EJ having said he'd like to write Hazou having the Dog scroll is rubbing me the wrong way. Not because I don't want him to not have fun - because I do - but because him wanting Hazou to have the Dogs doesn't mean the Dogs want Hazou. Obviously, EJ would know himself how the Dogs would feel about Hazou but us players do not due to HDK.

We can just send a message, even if it takes a while.
