An alarming possibility just occured to me. Jiraiya may not have left information with Asuma about how the Iron Nerve works because it's a literal clan secret. Or it may have been lost in the tower. This means that Asuma does not know that Mist (more than likely) has access to skywalker designs.

Meh, I'm pretty sure he knows all the Hidden Villages have Skywalkers now.

I'll note that Hazou can't actually contribute all that much to this, given his complete lack of cryptography skill (effective -1 right now, ouch).
We don't need him to decode but to make perfect copies of the notes since if the tower's records can be destroyed beyond recovery we have the only source of Leaf intelligence dossiers, reports, etc.

Single points of catastrophic failure are bad and Hazou is in a unique position to fix this problem.

What I have told Hazou to do is spend the rest of his free time sorting through decrypted stuff, which honestly I don't think will take so much time as to prohibit things like teatime. (Sanity check: how long does it take Kagome to decode a page of notes, vs. how long does it take for Hazou to read the page and decide whether it's Clan Secrets, Leaf Intel, or Icha Icha Notes?)
This is a good point: Kagome is the only one who can decode this in our clan and Asuma did defer to allowing Kagome to go on the mission before having him decode the notes.

Ideally, this means that decoding the notes isn't time sensitive despite us just being told it should be our top priority.

However, it's possible that the bridge is more time sensitive than the notes so we shouldn't just wait for Kagome to come back before we try to decode them somehow (perhaps by asking if Asuma would be willing to have Tsunade and/or Oro look through the notes to see if they can help since they knew Jiraiya since they were all kids?).

And even then, it's teatime. Taking breaks is an important part of being productive, so even if Hazou could decrypt the notes I would not expect Asuma to begrudge us taking a tea break.
It's less about expecting our boss to be reasonable and more about demonstrating our initiative and patriotism. Our leader just told us he needs these reports ASAP for the good of Leaf. Telling him that we will get to it after tea time sends a lackluster message WRT our loyalty to Leaf and its needs.

@Inferno Vulpix Could you move the "sanity-check with the team" thing above the "sort through Jiraiya's notes" thing? They may have valuable contributions on doing that more effectively.

Actually, maybe just put it at the top of the plan? For all we know they have ideas on SC as well.
I'm... not opposed to asking the clan if they have ideas on how to help Kagome decrypt notes, but I kinda don't want to talk with the clan about the idea of talking to Kagome about the idea of maybe getting Shadow Clone. I feel like there's a line between SAN-checking ideas and being unconfident about even discussing ideas.

Maybe change the first sentence into something like... "Discuss Kagome getting Shadow Clone."

Or something like that.

We have people on it. Asuma does not expect us to waste Clan resources by allocating people who know nothing about decoding to try and fumble their way through a task they have no ability to deal with.

Like, in general don't assume that Asuma wants us to waste Leaf resources.

Yeah it looks like the thread is generally confusing Asuma's "do not try to conceal anything" threat with "you must literally do nothing else but decode this".

It's not really wasting resources to have Hazou make a copy of the material.

Hey, look! It's a blatant attempt at changing the subject!

You know, Naruto's going to be Hokage one day. Do you all think that Mari would be okay with Naruto ruling Leaf? She's already served under the thumb of one nearly-unbeatable jinchuuriki whose will couldn't be fought by sheer power difference. Would she be okay serving under another one, even if it's one as (seemingly) benevolent as Naruto? It kinda seems like something she'd want to avoid, personally.

[X] Action Plan: To Release or to Keep a Legacy
  1. Before Hazou and Kagome leave ask Asuma what the characteristics would be of the winning submission to the contest.
    1. Does he, for example, prefer something immediately useful or strategically noteworthy?
  2. Once we are back home ask our team in private whether or not we should give all of Jiraiya's notes to Asuma immediately or wait until we can finish deciphering them
    1. While the team debates start making a copy of the notes, citing Asuma's mention of 'high treason' and wanting not to upset him
    2. How long would it take Kagome to finish decoding all of the notes and is there any information lost between the copies Hazou makes and the originals?
      1. Would Kagome be interested in learning Shadow Clones in order to be more productive?
    3. Would this be worth the sacrifice of exclusivity in exchange for political favor from Asuma/Leaf?
    4. Is the team willing on individual, personal levels to give up the last remaining works of Jiraiya to all of Leaf?
    5. Put it to a clan vote and go with the result
    6. Regardless of the outcome, keep copying the notes until we have a complete second copy for our own personal use and as a back up, just in case
      1. Eat, sleep, copy, and repeat
      2. If our family feels it necessary have someone look over our shoulder as we copy for Out-related contingencies
      3. (If the QM's want to and if there's enough space in the update, Hazou could have a moment of self reflection about his interactions with Jiraiya and how he has or hasn't come to terms with Jiraiya's death and legacy)

It's not as if anybody stood a chance against Jiraiya either if it came down to it.

@Inferno Vulpix Have you given more thought to my suggestion regarding putting the 'check with the plan' on the top?
Sorry, it did slip my mind for a good while. I'm still partial to putting it beneath the Shadow Clone discussion because imo we shouldn't need to check with the clan to just have a normal conversation with Kagome, but I don't mind putting it above the notes-organization bit.

And done.
You know what, why not?

[X] Action Plan: Flight, Family, and Iron Nerve
  • After you leave:
    • Ask Kagome if he's interested in learning Shadow Clone. Two Kagomes could decrypt or scribe twice as fast, after all, and you could watch each other's backs.
    • Noburi could compare your chakra to Keiko's if you're not sure if you have enough.
  • Run the rest by the clan before executing:
  • Make sure to prioritize sorting through Jiraiya's notes in what free time you have.
    • You may not know anything about cryptography but you can probably sort and organize the decrypted stuff.
  • Spend 1FP to have previously memorized every seal in the Tower's catalog.
    • Scribe out a copy of each (stay under surveillance if the clan is worried about you scribing seals)
    • Bring them to Asuma in addition to whatever descriptions you can recall, in case Leaf didn't have surviving backup caches for any of them.
  • Scout out minor clans that might have unused adoption slots and sound out how much they're worth to them.
  • Have tea with Ino.
    • Goal: have some nice harmless de-stressing fun.
    • Swap idioms and jokes from our different upbringings. We've got shark jokes, what do you have?
    • Discuss some of the differences between Leaf and Mist culture, but keep everything lighthearted.
  • Invite Yuno out to sparring sessions, try and help her feel more included.
  • Skysliders:
    • Begin regularly checking in on the craftsmen and getting progress reports.
      • Contribute any ideas or inspiration you think might help (such as your insights on updrafts from way back in Mist)
      • Test their prototypes at safe low altitudes.
    • Raise morale:
      • An inspiring speech never hurt.
      • Set up a prize for getting a functional prototype design: a sizeable sum of money or a personal favour from us.

I just deleted the notes section. EDIT: And asked about the mortgage.

IF we wanted to do research into, specifically, the spiderweb nature of the world in preparation for Fixing that, what would such research entail?
I think you mean cobweb, right? In reference to the earlier statement of "More like a cobweb, really..." with respect to the state of reality?

(My immediate first reaction was "Oh boy! I would love an Into the Spiderverse themed mega arc where we are flung from our world via a sealing failure and have to traverse the Outer path from world to world in an attempt to return to our home reality." , but then I realized you were probably talking about the other thing.)

[X] Action Plan: HDK Cryptography

Which parts of the plan do we want on or off-screen? Since we have space we can specify our preferences and plan for 3 scenes total.
