Akane is the ideal addition. She's competent in combat, and very easy-going, and will help smooth things over between Kagome and other ANBU.

Regarding how we approach it... is there any reason that we can't simply bomb it from the air?
  1. While Asuma seems to think that Rock already has Skywalkers, I'm not sure if that means things have cleared up on the 'are you allowed to use them' front. We could probably get permission, but it's non-negligible odds of a 'no' in my eyes.
  2. If Rock has Skywalkers then we should expect them to have them ready on all their guard ninjas (whether or not they would is almost irrelevant. We should assume they do because the consequences of carelessness is death).
Or simply blow up the foundation from inside the canyon, but same plan. Oh no the bridge collapsed whatever shall we do.
I like this. It'd need more explosions than destroying the bridge normally but lol we have a Kagome.

I saw no OPSEC procedures during the Uplift conversation. And Haru was outside the door. Concerning.

Now might be a good time for Hazou to sell cooperating with Rock to obtain mutual benefits to Asuma instead of the current adversarial relationship.

We should make sure we collected those pages Kagome dropped. Also, those Icha Icha drafts might have secret coded messages in them. Could remind Kagome of that.

Maybe formalize some of their training methods, because it looks like they're still doing master/apprentice."
Didn't Jiraiya say Leaf has a sealing academy?

no one flunks out after the start of third year
So their chakra abilities were never even tested. Surprising how much Leaf cares about their ninja knowing taijutsu, weapons, reading and history when those don't matter for genjutsu and ninjutsu. But it does give hope for teaching the flunkies.

@eaglejarl @Velorien @OliWhail What intel on the bridge do we have? Specifically, where exactly is the bridge, what material is the bridge made of, is there any cover (natural or otherwise) in the vicinity, how deep is the ravine and how visible is the bottom from above?

For that matter, what general intel on Rock-nin and Grass-nin do we have? What jutsu would they have to defend a bridge against a possible attack, what sensory jutsu/bloodlines do they have?

Just bring a competent Aburame with us. Have their bugs bring over stupid boxes from a couple hundred meters away and let them nuke the place and the relevant countryside.
Correction to this: IFF the bridge is made of reasonably solid, non-flammable material like concrete or granite (or limestone), the stupid boxes alone might not have the raw force to actually destroy the bridge. In that case we may have to prepare implosion seals or SINs and deploy them in the same manner as the above.

In order to facilitate civilian logistics, the bridge simply can't be a filmsy rope bridge. Has to be solid enough to support caravans coming through.

Which suggest that we simply skywalk and waterwalk to the bridge and blow up the supporting column.

You're living in a stone building. That was an internal room with no windows. (The brazier needed Purifiers but there wasn't good opportunity to mention them.) Akane needed to walk down a hall to get to the door.

We should make sure we collected those pages Kagome dropped.
You did.

@eaglejarl @Velorien @OliWhail What intel on the bridge do we have? Specifically, where exactly is the bridge,
Right here. *points at map*

what material is the bridge made of, is there any cover (natural or otherwise) in the vicinity, how deep is the ravine and how visible is the bottom from above?
Stone, minimal in the immediate area but forest a half mile away, eighty feet, clearly.

For that matter, what general intel on Rock-nin and Grass-nin do we have?
Question hazy, please clarify.

What jutsu would they have to defend a bridge against a possible attack, what sensory jutsu/bloodlines do they have?

A few thoughts:
  1. Hazou knows the Pangolin technique Tunnel Excavation which would let us heavily undermine the wall of the canyon by effectively deleting most of the matter holding it up. If we want to pursue the collapse-from-beneath strat then Hazou is a good accompanying pick.
  2. Haru wants to be adopted, and while I do want to accept him we still need our second Goketsu slot free if we want to marry Yuno and Noburi without complications. Our options here are:
    1. Use our slot on Haru anyways and figure out the Yuno bit later.
    2. Quickly go buy a slot from another clan and hope Haru doesn't mind that we're shuffling him through another clan first.
    3. Turn Haru away for right now and do 2 with more planning.
  3. Mari thinks that the civilians we hire will just faf around and not try their best if we just leave them to their devices. She's probably right, so let's not leave them alone. Check in often, give rousing speeches, and try to get involved in understanding what they've accomplished and do some collaborative brainstorming while we're there. That way not only are we contributing as much as we can ourselves, but we're being a continual presence instilling zeal and digging deep enough into what they're doing that it'd be harder to hide laziness from us.

With modification this could be helpful for convincing Asuma
motion Mari over. tell her the plan. have her convey it or for psychological effect (and with her permission) convey it yourself using your naive idealism
Was it really Rock that did it? No one was acting like they would attack anytime soon before the attack. Everyone was furthering long term goals. Hiashi using the scroll as a carrot instead of immediately increase Leaf's combat strength. Him making all those deals with clans to improve their long-term future instead of dealing with immediate threats. If Rock did it why didn't they attack immediately? What if Akatsuki attacked us? Perhaps we should reexamine our beliefs.
For the first time in a long time there is goodwill between the villages, when we went to attack Akatsuki. <point at person who fought in battle of the gods>. Don't you remember fighting with <insert rock ninja name>. For the past few centuries civilization has been declining (who did we give this speech to already? if they've already heard it maybe not need to repeat) with humanity attacking each other. <point at random clan head> Do you want your descendants to eventually be killed from chakra beasts when by chance there are no ninja in a generation. Even in the near present, Leaf is especially vulnerable to the status quo of fighting and distrust due to its diminished military strength.
If renting land to Rock does not make us seem weak to other nations, why not do it without sabotage? We can't consume as many food/luxury items with our diminished population so we aren't even making good use of that land. It could cement Rock as a strong ally to Leaf, to defend against other nations thinking of extorting us.
We could lose the support of Tsunade, who once said plagues have no borders. How would she react to us deliberately spreading plagues?
Even if the plan succeeds and Rock retreats, they still have no land. They will take it one way or another, so we would only push our conflict with Rock to the future. If they ever discover our sabotage the war faction in Rock would completely overtake the peace faction, and any restraint they are currently showing would be removed. And we do not have the strength to defeat Rock.
We should engage in cooperative negotiations. Tell the Rock nin we are grateful for their help and remember the camaraderie displayed against Akatsuki. We realize their need for land and food and would be glad to help them. But we are worried about displaying weaknesses to other nations. Could we rent the land to them instead at low rates? What is it they want from land actually? If luxury goods we could skip the middle man and offer trade deals. We offer goods and they offer ninja manpower. We could offer them pangolin services to reduce their chakra beasts and increase their food (tell Council about the pangolin hunting idea). We could tell them our land clearing ideas to make the cost of food virtually free. Do they have ideas for how we can mutually help each other without other nations viewing Leaf as weak?
You're living in a stone building. That was an internal room with no windows. (The brazier needed Purifiers but there wasn't good opportunity to mention them.) Akane needed to walk down a hall to get to the door.
Ok, I feel slightly better. Still concerned over lack of OPSEC though.

I thought we were living in a tent? I mean, we had the meeting with Aya in a tent...
Right here. *points at map*

Damn, we'll have to ask the Aburame the distance their bugs can travel effectively, and use implosion seals/SINs. Might end up using the Tunneling Excavation after all, though interactions with underground sensors is gonna be a pain.
I was kinda hoping we'd ask Asuma for this intelligence.

Oh if we blow up the bridge harming civilian trade, and therefore their livelihoods, Akatsuki might decide to discipline us. Or at least look on us less favorably.

We could hire civilians to decode Jiraiya's notes. And swearing them to secrecy with ninja intimidation. And adopt them and give them great quality of life so their gratitude helps too. Codebreaking and ciphering sounds like something Leaf would train civilians to do considering it doesn't need chakra, although that means they might have signed some contract with the Tower that prevents them from working with us.

Idea List for the Contest
  • Clear and wall-off areas of land surrounding Leaf to make expansion of the city easier.
  • Clear and wall-off areas of land far removed from Leaf and pay people to build there to create new settlements.
  • Dig a sewage system. (IIRC, we were told that Leaf doesn't have one.)
  • Start a small college for teaching math/banking/finance. I would like to create Higher Education, but I'll take the lowest hanging fruit version of it, since we have only two months.
  • Create a Nobel Prize Comittee. Legally bind the clan to awarding medals and funding grants to individuals producing outstanding acheivements for the public good of Leaf each year.
    • (Yo, Asuma, we heard you liked contests to give things to the public so we submitted a contest to give things to the public to your contest for giving things to the public so you can give things to the public while you give things to the public!)
    • (Dear Sage that meme is old.)
  • The Louis Pasteur Rot Experiments.
    • Take two identical bits of meat. Place one in a jar as a control. Place the other in a jar covered by cheese-cloth. Leave for a few days. The control will be swarming with flies. The second bit of meat will only have flies swarming the outside of the cheese-cloth. This disproves that meat spontaneously generates flies as it rots.
    • Pour an equal amount of meat gravy into two airtight sealed jars. Boil one jar, leave the other as a control. Leave for a few days. The control will rot. The boiled gravy will not rot, because the germs amicules miasma inside the jar has been killed by the heat.
    • Pour an equal amount of meat gravy into two long-necked flasks. In one flask, warp the neck to form a swan-neck. Leave the other as a control. Boil both flasks. The control will rot, because the gravy has been re-exposed to the germs amicules miasma in the air after boiling. The swan-neck flask will not rot, because the germs amicules miasma will fall into the pit of the swan-neck instead of into the gravy. (NB: some versions of this experiment pour water into the swan-neck to ensure that air-currents do not allow germs to get through the swan-neck.)
      • Edit: It occurs to me that you could just have two jars (one open, one sealed airtight), boil both, and see that the unsealed jar rots while the sealed one doesn't, without needing to mess around with swan-necked flasks.
  • Fund the construction of a useful building (such as an ampitheatre or block of offices) and donate it to the village.
  • Purchase lots of ruined buildings from their civilian owners. Donate them to the village.
  • Donate a number of permanent free slots in our civilian-storage bank to the village.
  • Flying Machines
    • Have Hazou invent the wind-sock by blowing into an airtight bag and noticing that it inflates in a direction against the pull of gravity. Use this to jutsify the insight that air can exert pressure if there is more air on one side of a shape than on the other side.
    • Have Hazou experiment with shapes that exploit this. Leaves fall slowly because they have large surface-area. Kunai fall fast because they push air out of the way. This holds true even for origami kunai the same weight as the slowly-falling leaf.
    • Have Hazou use these insights to design a semi-effective hang-glider with Akane. Pay civilian engineers to refine the design from their prototype.

And now to return to pretending that the thread doesn't exist.

So, with regards to the mission, I like that we're seeing ideas on how to blow up the bridge. However, we also need to consider what type of opposition we might face - Rock may be aware of this bridge being important to their deal, so it's potentially guarded.

So...

Just bring a competent Aburame with us. Have their bugs bring over stupid boxes from a couple hundred meters away and let them nuke the place and the relevant countryside.

In addition to this, I'd want other scouting elements. A Hyuga and their cheaty eyeballs, plus an Inuzuka and their cheaty dog noses. So Team 8, basically. Though Hinata may be too busy given she's the new clan head, so maybe slot in Neji or some other random Hyuga in his place.

A jonin just in case shit hits the fan would be nice.

I thought we were living in a tent? I mean, we had the meeting with Aya in a tent...
Squeeeeee! I get to faflec @faflec !!!!!

She turned sideways in her chair, draping her legs over the arm of her chair so she could conveniently set her drink on the floor. She let her head tip back so that she was looking thoughtfully up at the as-yet-unpainted granite ceiling of their new quarters.

Let me clarify, then: Which country is the bridge in, and how deep into its terrority is it?
Grass. About where the 'V' in "Hidden Grass Village" is.

Two ideas:
  1. Launch the mission, try for stealth, but also prepare to fake being ninjas from River if we're spotted.
  2. Do a bunch of civil engineering and chakra beast extermination on our way back from the mission site.

So theres two ANBU proposed as security. I vote we pitch the addition of Akane and Haru as additional security on the basis of "Something will undoubtedly go terribly wrong" and doubling as "Convenient team building exercise for our prospective adoption candidate."

Idea:

1) Have a really bright light.
2) Do aerial assault from the direction of bright light.
3) Enemies will have to look at our direction and be blinded.

A lurker's reaction post:

"To: Lord Hokage," he read aloud. "From: Lord Nara Shikamaru. Your Lordship, it is with honor and respect for the Will of Fire that I enclose the following: The macerator seal that I included with my clan's contribution was, to the best of my knowledge, created by the Gōketsu. The Nara reverse-engineered it after seeing it used in a sparring session before the Chūnin Exams. I did not mention this with the original submission because I was uncertain whether the Gōketsu intended to retain it as a clan secret or not. If you are reading this then they have joined with the Will of Fire and shared the design. In such case, I withdraw the seal from the Nara contribution and request that credit for it be given to the Gōketsu. Yours in respect and obedience, Lord Nara Shikamaru."

Good man indeed, Shikamaru.

Finally, a reasonable person :V

"The Nara are building a bespoke Leaf Private Library. Very high security, but open to any Leaf ninja in good standing. The goal is to make it include every non-classified jutsu and jutsu known to Leaf. They've invented a...card catalogue, he called it, and a numerical classification system for items stored in the library. There's also flow charts that allow a ninja to determine what jutsu would be most effective to study in order to fill holes in their skill sets, where the chart ends with the catalogue number for the jutsu that the person should learn."

Nice idea.

"If I may shift topics for a moment, I'd like to discuss why I called you here." His eye shifted to the senior ninja across from him. "Kagome, Leaf needs your talents on a mission. Hazō, you are here in your capacity as Kagome's teammate in order to advise us on what support he will need."

Kagome-sensei glared at the absolute dictator of his nation. "You're sending me on a suicide mission, aren't you, you stinker? You just want to get me killed, I can tell!"

Asuma ignored the comment with munificent grace and pulled out a map of the Elemental Nations. He turned it around and slid it across the desk so that Hazō and Kagome could see it clearly.

"I'm not sure how familiar you are with the Land of Grass," he said, tapping on one of the minor nations that formed a buffer between Fire and Earth. "There's a major ravine that runs from here in Rain"—he set his finger down just above and to the right of the final 'N' in the nation's name—"through Grass and into Fire, ending here." He slid his finger over and tapped it on the final 'S' in 'Hidden Grass Village', the words being long enough to stretch outside of the map's image of the territory that the eponymous village actually ruled. "The width and depth vary from place to place, but at every point it's an impassable barrier to civilian trade. Hence why there are three bridges, here, here, and here." He tapped three points, then moved his finger back to the westernmost bridge. "Kagome, your skill with explosives is well known. I need this particular bridge to cease existing and not resume existing for a good long time. You're the man for the job."
Kagome-sensei sniffed derisively. "Stinkers. Should splat 'em."

Asuma smiled. "Tempting as it is, Leaf does not need a war right now." He pointed back at the map. "As you know, we are allowing the so-helpful ninja from Rock to rent a strip of our land along the border between Grass and Fire. The only good thing about that situation is that the land is disjoint from the Earth Country, which complicates their logistics.

"They've found a solution to that. Our spies tell us that they are in negotiation with Grass. Grass will cede Earth a strip of land on the eastern border between Grass and Hot Springs. In exchange, Grass will receive some of the land that we are 'renting' to Rock. Grass will likely end up with more land than they currently have, and richer land too. Earth will once again be contiguous and it becomes much harder for us to interfere with them.

"On the other hand, if this bridge weren't there then the new land would be inaccessible to civilian traders living in the main body of Grass. There would be no easy way to bring the food and lumber back and the new land would be essentially worthless to Grass. If that happens within the next forty-eight hours then they likely won't sign the agreement with Rock and things will remain as they are." He leaned back and took a drag on his cigarette. "Like I said, I need that bridge to not exist."

Several things to unpack here:

1. Asuma is very good at handling explosive materiel - nicely done with Kagome.
2. FINALLY A MISSION AND NOT SOCIOECONOMIC STUFF.
3. It's nice to have a Lord Hokage who gives full briefings.
4. Related to previous three: Asuma is awesome.
5. Did I mention that it's demolition mission time? It's demolition mission time. I don't care about the broader geopolitics; it's nice to just blow things up and not worry about the implications (versus, say, current events).

Ugh. This is sloppy, needs another editing pass, and doesn't include several things I wanted to write. Unfortunately, it's late and I'm on tilt, so I'm kicking it out the door. I can fix issues later.

Honestly, this is my favorite update, of the past couple dozen or so.

Sloppy, incomplete it may be, I like it. It just feels refreshing.

I think Asuma's actually fond of Hazou. Huh.

Yup, he likes us. That's good.

Poor Asuma, don't you remember that Hazou's from the Mist? He's not used to all this logic. He's used to "tradition" and desperate displays of village zeal and secret police showing up at your door for nighttime interrogations.
We're the ultimate proof of his -- and, more poignantly, of Hiruzen's -- philosophy's triumph.
