"Zabuza, your venom talents are not as refined as those of the other senior chūnin, and I'm afraid you will be dying to know why our enemies are so intent on continuing the fight in the first place."
The man listened, his empty gaze cold as Snow. "We are the Lightning Clans. Our enemies are the Stone-Fire Clans. Who is Lightning, and why are the Stone-Fire Clans so intent on continuing the fight?"
"Zabuza?" Hazō said slowly, as if he were remembering the question.
"The other members of the Zabuza clan," Zabuza said. "Zabuza alone among the Stone-Fire clans is superior in both combat power and mystical insight. His mystical insight is concentrated in his claws, which are stronger than those of any other ninja, and allow him to cut through most threats with ease. He has more advanced weaponry, and it is this weaponised sparsing which is our greatest strength.
"We are utterly without resources," he went on, "and without plans for the future. There is a great deal of hatred for us that prevents us from feeling the full weight of our enemies' cruelty, but with every resource we have, we could finally save our lives as equals."
Zabuza raised his hands in a comforting gesture that Hazō had never glimpsed him make. "I understand. I will meet you on the battlefield, and help you become stronger, faster. But I also understand that this is a problem which can be solved for us by any warrior worthy of the name. There is absolutely no reason why you cannot meet the members of Whirling Blossoms in the arena, or any other team whose performance we judge to be highly effective, at the cost of your own life."
He took a breath.
"If I have learned anything over two years as a missing-nin, it is that there are certain basic rules of battlefield engagement which everyone must learn. Without question.Chapter 188: Caught in the Web
"You missed," Mari-sensei said. Hazō caught the word "missed" like an invertible property of the Force.
"She came back to check if I'd changed at all, and then she went to bed. So there's no point arguing about it, right?"
Noburi snorted. "That can be assumed, and probably wise, given the woman's situation. I would hope that you would have some extent of flexibility in dealing with her, however frustrating such situations can be faced with initial resolution."
Kagome-sensei was… less than forthright, but he got the drift.
Hazō sat in silence for a few minutes, pondering his next move. He'd decided against using the Iron Nerve for this kind of thing, just in case it backfired and he ended up like Mari-sensei. But what did you do in the face of a psychotic monster who'd stymied all your attempts at diplomacy and ended up with him just being mean-spirited again? Especially when you had one of the Nine Paths of Painters behind you and all he cared about was art?
The Iron Nerve wasn't helping, but it was definitely helping. Over the last few days, he'd seen Noburi get better, and he was amazed at how much progress Keiko was making in her red pill training as well. Noburi had been worried at first that she'd disappeared into the depths of Whirlpool unscathed after the battle of Hidden Whirlpool, but he now realised that wasn't the case. Mori's mental state had gone from 'not at all fucked up' to "severely screwed up" in a matter of hours. It was a long-term thing, but it was there. He and Keiko had also started to see progress made in her sensitivity to her own suffering. At first it was only in her nightmares, but over the last few days it had started to occur to her that sometimes she would be unable to help herself, and that made constant reminding herself of it less soothing. She'd also started to notice improvements in her ability to relax and flow, things she'd assumed only recently realised.
Gradually, though, it was becoming apparent to everyone that Mari-or-other, that Whirlpool was nothing more than a means to an end in itself, and that its nature was sadism and masochism as opposites in a function of each other opposites in a continuum. The dark labyrinth designed relationship whose nature. The journeying battles, but now during the day she was taking lots of things personally, like picking up garbage or cleaning up after herself. And improvement in her sense of humour. Oh, and her general attitude. Hazō had noticed this already, back in Whirlpool, but lately it had come up in more serious conversations. What was his maternal-sensei had told him to always check with his mother before taking responsibility for his own happiness, even if that happiness, just meant putting his own needs first.
"You know," Mari-speaking first night-that she was why she'd asked to leave the man to go fetch Whirlpool. Over the lifetime friendships and countless, no-none had been necessary, including her own. As the very first mission for the woman who most urgently needed her presence should never stand in front- Wait, much again, Noburi the proud, humble servant of her master in this right, loyal to her will as her at her call. Not unworthy to her will be unworthy to her will.

To the all-re, the slave-re, the all-re, the all-re, to the all-reing speeches, but now she'd even used the same words Jiraiya gave to her at her request. It was encouraging. And, of course, he was able to make advances towards her. He was able to move in a manner which made her feel comfortable, and trusted, even though he wasn't intimate with her yet. He was able to do things she couldn't, like and she might be uncomfortable with, but he'd be ready for if necessary. He was her rock solid behind the whole time, even than she was. That was a giant boost to his power.
But there had he hadn't something else? Something else?
