Huh. Looks like Jiraiya is much worse at unhealthily suppressing the bad thoughts than I am. Then again, he doesn't have the internet or an endless supply of podcasts for sleeping time.

Yes. The only reason people other than those we the hivemind favor should be considered is if their reactions to being treated as such would inhibit our will.
Bwahaha.
Funny thing is, I don't think this actually occurred to us. We're all in favour of Naruto coming back and becoming an ally of Uplift. An unusual harmony between our perspective and Hazou's, given that the latter would probably be disgusted at the idea of abandoning family for political gain, if he wasn't distracted by Jiraiya's aura.

Still, it seems like I'll have to move project "Integrate Jiraiya into the family" higher on the priority list. Anyone else provisionally in favour of talking to him in private about this once we're back in Leaf?

Yes! Lets go fishing with him and Kagome.

I'm not going to interrupt the proposals for Mountain, or Operation Murder; all I ask is one plan sometime between Leaf and Mist that goes something like this:

[] Plan Passing

[x] Plan Passing

I am in favor of this. There's no way Jiraiya won't see through it and realize we're trying to therapize him, but hey, I think that's okay. Also, I think this should be done before we broach the topic of Orochimaru re: Plan Murder.

Speaking of Plan Murder, maybe we should ask Jiraiya more about his story and falling out with Orochimaru before we just go whole hog and say "Would you trust him to have your back against the guy who murdered your adoptive dad?" I mean he was a pretty horrific dude in canon, and while he seems more benign here (although the bar was set pretty damn low so that's not exactly an achievement), Team Hiruzen did still have a pretty significant falling out if nothing else.

A customized version of what Hazou told Keiko and Noburi about the clan, followed by the admission that we're willing to let him in, if he's willing to do his part. Admonish him slightly for thinking Hazou would try to sabotage the search for Naruto. Thank him for instituting Till n' Fills, and admit that we're in his debt, so he can feel better about something.

I'd like to combine clearing the air between them by letting Hazou air his grievances in a controlled manner, with a conditional offer of support. I don't expect anything to happen immediately, but I'd like to put this idea in Jiraiya's head, let him chew on it a bit. And in the meantime, we can try to do something nice for him, like making a habit of bringing him lunch to the Tower. Doesn't sound like he's eating or sleeping properly when left to his own devices.

I like this. In my opinion, simply telling Jiraiya what we think about him isn't going to have much impact. He already knows or can estimate most of these things, after all, and for some reason it feels wrong to me for Hazou to just say them. So show, don't tell. Let him in a little more, give him something he can relate to, so we can build a deeper connection off of it. Not a panacea for his own grief, of course, but a signal more clear than words that we're willing to start considering him part of our family for real.

[X] Action Plan: Games and Conversations

Word Count: 395 (holy fucking shit)
  • Game Night Prep:
    • Make plans for a few bigger games. Buy extra supplies/games as necessary.
    • [???]Game Night:
      • Guidelines for good gaming:
        • Make sure Ami goes up against tough opponents. Better that she doesn't get bored.
        • Try to keep people with reason to dislike each other apart.
        • Let people run games if they want to, only intervene if the game's falling apart.
        • Take a break and play a few games. Running yourself ragged will just end in disaster.
  • Give the Oyabun a present, to thank him for everything he's done for us during the Exams.
    • Let him know that we hope to continue our mutually beneficial relationship into the future.

Actually @faflec, I'd like to reiterate my previous question: who did we invite to the Game Night?
Must have missed the question, sorry.
Hazō proposed that tomorrow night the Gōketsu would hold a truly epic gaming night. The entire Leaf contingent would be invited, of course, including the jōnin and any off-shift ANBU. So would all tournament participants, with plus twos for those who wanted to bring their teams or particularly beloved family members. Mum would naturally be invited. Aunt Ren would not, despite being a family member and also the Mizukage—Hazō had put his foot down, and firmly asked Jiraiya to come up with some diplomatic excuse if need be. Whether Keiko invited Ami would be determined by how tomorrow's meeting went, and while a strange little voice in the back of his head tempted him to invite Zabuza just to see what happened, he still had missing-nin survival instincts.
All the tournament participants (and +2s for friends), the entire Leaf Contingent, Hana, Ami, and Shin.

Edit: And I just realized that this means we may see Hiashi play games.

Furthermore:

We can watch Ami play Hiashi.

:3

On another note, though, I feel like we shouldn't put together both Games and Conversations in the same plan. I feel like not only would doing the Game Night notably well would require 300 words in and of itself, but moreover the Game Night really isn't the time and place for talking about Poppa; I'd be more comfortable dropping in a stray thought about Poppa in this plan so that we can IC justify talking with Jiraiya about Poppa.

Just saying, this is an excellent opportunity to characterize Hazou as less naive.

Okay, so here's my second question @faflec (or whoever is able to answer): what approximately is the size of the Leaf contingent?

I'm not sure that there should be a conversation on this. Feels like a potentially heavy conversation to be dealing with right now. Based on my mental model of Jiraiya as a man with few meaningful relationships who is currently stressed out, super busy, and hiding deep grief... I think the best thing we could do for him is to make no demands on his energy.

Let those times where he's in our company be times he can recharge. Maybe that's us being cheerful and openly appreciative of good things, or us including him in low-stakes activities (private game nights seem good). Harmless conversations about shared interests, and so forth.

Once he's in a better spot and we've built up more trust/companionship, then I could see a heart to heart going well.

Probably 20ish. We have the 9 Genin. There instructors. Kakashi, Gai and Jiraiya. As well as various ANBU
Add to that the various clan heads/representatives, making...what, 25-30?
Kurenai and Asuma, being jōnin-sensei, are accompanying their teams. As Jiraiya mentioned, Hiashi has been brought along to make sure he can't destabilize things inside Leaf. Yamanaka Inoichi is also accompanying you, as are chuunin representatives from almost all the clans and - interestingly - the head of Clan Minami.

wait so we can have the very first line of the Game Night be "Ah, Kotokoro, so good to see you! The Village Hidden Under the Mountain does not forgive, and does not forget, punk Ah yes, Inoichi, so good to see you too The Village Hidden Among the Archipelago is ready to kick Mountain's ass any day of the week, bitch"

glorious

Anyway, the number one thing our plan should do is interface with the plan that everyone else already set up; we're coming in with one hour to the official opening, which means guests are probably filtering in right now.

Our priorities should be to produce diagrams of the building, sound-profiles, how much force it'd take to break one of the walls, and how much of the walls can go before the building collapses. All so that all the ninja know how to kill everyone else in the building and can thus establish mutual trust over mutually assured destruction! Or disintegrate into slap-fights because everybody knows that there's a point where everyone is forced to back down, but I digress.
