Was Minami carrying the messages to the other contacts? I don't think the enemy ninja took them. Actually, whether Minami had them or not, I don't think the ninja checked what she was carrying at all, am I wrong? Maybe she did while Hazou was fighting the gas?

Sorry for the repost, but the thread is moving so fast it may have gone unnoticed. Does no one find it a little strange? If she's from the Yakuza and knows about our mission, wouldn't she want the other messages? Even if the network is compromised, even if Jiraya is certainly careful about what he writes, it may still contain small bits of information that can be compared with other sources, and information is very important? Maybe she didn't want to stay too long near seal users free to prepare, but she took the time to slowly write the message. Maybe searching the corpse of a ninja in a hurry is known to be dangerous (although everyone doesn't live with Kagome...)?

She's probably waiting for us to dispel the Air Dome Seal and then gank us afterwards.

This is what I think we should assume while planning, but given our ability to sense things via Living Roots and Misterators, we should have reasonable assurances if she's going to do that. This is why I'm voting for speed, though an argument could be made for the OpSec approach. I might write up a NBS list for that too.

She could try to gank us and try to find out more, but ultimately, the Yakuza will be going up against a state actor. It would invite retaliation from Leaf.

Hmmm... for OPSEC, could we use Banshees given we now have time to put on our Banshee Slayers? If she's close enough to gank us knowing we can quickly put up a defense barrier against a threat at range, then she's probably close enough to be affected by noise seals. Send out the clones with Banshees, have them activate them. What are the effective radius on those anyways?

We could drop an air dome and immediately pop a mistarator and another dome to start trying to drain the jounin while under protection

@eaglejarl @Velorien @OliWhail

Reminded to ask from discord: what is our current seal loadout? How many of each seal do we have on Noburi, Hazou, and Minami? Especially relevant seals:
  • burning-log macerators
  • Misterators
  • Air Domes
  • Storage Seals
  • PMYFs
  • Purifiers
  • Tunneler's Friends
  • Skywalkers
  • Ear-busters
  • Banshee Slayers
  • Implosion Seals (and what size)

She guided the team to the benches surrounding the large central table before retreating towards the kitchen at the back.

She stopped halfway there, and turned back to face them.

"Oh, before I forget, I do have something of a… confidential nature. Which one of you's in charge?"

"That would be me," Minami said. "What can we do to help?"

"Oh, don't worry," the woman said, pulling a bottle out from another sleeve and taking a swig. "You don't have to do anything at all."

Then she brought her hands together.

"Water Element: Eternal Lullaby Technique!"

The three Leaf-nin jumped to their feet, but nothing seemed to happen, which in some ways was the most terrifying of all possible effects.

Hazō's blood turned cold as ice with realisation. What kind of ninja locked themselves in with a three-man team in a reinforced building where even exploding tags couldn't make an instant escape route?

A prepared jōnin.

Hazō forced his breath into evenness. He was already feeling slightly dizzy just from the enemy's killing intent, and that was unacceptable. So they didn't know her capabilities. She didn't know theirs either. She was already holding a kunai he hadn't seen her draw, but at least it wasn't a sword or a seal. If they could hold her off for just a little while, Noburi could use his mist drain, and even jōnin had no protection against that.

He hoped.

He started to move in, but Minami was way ahead of him. Her body was a sword in itself, cutting through the air with inhuman speed as she crossed the distance to the jōnin.

Her blade came down—

"Hōzuki's Mantle!"

Minami's attack fractionally slowed as it met the screen of water, by an amount so tiny that even Hazō's kinetic vision barely registered it.

In that sliver of a moment, the jōnin slid out of the way and thrust a kunai through her throat.
@eaglejarl @Velorien @OliWhail There is a thing I'm confused about. The Jonin moved to the kitchen before turning around to face us. Then she activated Hozuki's Mantle to protect herself from Minami's attack, before killing her.

The reason I'm confused is because Hozuki's Mantle is a technique that works at a 270 degree angle, with the open 90 degrees in front of the user. This means that the Jonin's defense would only provide cover from behind and the sides: in this case it would make no sense for Hozuki's Mantle to protect her from Minami because there is no water in front of her.

Even with the obvious answer (the Jonin decided to turn ≥45 degrees to the side) there are still issues:
  • From the description of combat Minami would have needed to be 2m away from the enemy Jonin to have "met" the defense, instead of it forming around her and blasting her back, or trapping her (disclaimer: I don't know what would happen if Hozuki's Mantle activated while someone was within its radius). Why, then, would she have swung downwards from such a distance?
  • Hozuki's Mantle has a 2m radius; given the tight confines of a dining room/kitchen corridor I don't know if this is even possible to form without obstruction (walls, furniture...).
  • Hozuki's Mantle is described as being slow to move, and while a high TacMove does counter this it still raises the problem of how the ninja managed to turn to the side (to block Minami's attack), then cross the 2m distance to kill Minami without the Mantle catching on something.
Edit: Also, MC bonuses ought to apply.

Edit2: On second thought, maybe not MC bonus, it would be a tight fit.

This is more or less expected, isn't it? Jiraya killing minami in a deniable way? Let us not think about it too much.

Also, we need a prediction market. I'm putting 85%+ on this having been Jiraya. 30-70% on it being Mari in particular, depending on how seriously I'm taking the threat of unpredictable ninja combat.

it was the Yazuka rather than Jiraiya ordering a hit involving his clanmembers in a dangerous and unpredictable ninja fight.

I'm 100% sure it wasn't Mari, this isn't her style. She'd offer us poisoned drink and kill Minami with it, but give us a reduced dose that doesn't kill us. Then burn the place down with us in it, in a way that would let us escape with our lives (i.e, we regain consciousness).

To me, OPSEC approach is as follows:
  • Use sensory jutsu and Misterators to gather information (are there nearby chakra signatures? Is there nearby movement?)
  • After ~10 minutes, if no signs of people, move air domes to retrieve Minami's body
  • Move air domes to reach the door
  • Air dome to include the space outside the door
  • Attempt to pick the lock on the door
  • Use the minimum amount of force to escape
    • Ideally pick locks, possibly use MEW to jar something open
  • Send clones out, have them run to the forest in a bunch of random places
  • Use substitution to switch with some of them
  • Run on foot away

The ending to the fight is kind of giving me The Phantom Menace vibes. We just saw our team leader ruthlessly slain through a barrier by a trained enemy of the magics we also employ (ninja). A decent chance the combat restarts once the barrier comes down to a la Obi Wan's last stand. We can even use MEW to forcibly cause a high grounds/low grounds situation!

There's a safe way to get Minami's body with putting our meatselves in a no-Air Dome situation, even for a second:
  • Make clones and give them Air Dome seals.
  • Make a second Air Dome inside the first, such that the clones are between the two Air Domes.
  • Have the clones dispel the outermost Air Dome, and use their seals to make a third Air Dome, encompassing Minami's body.

I think, though I can't remember if/where it was said, that the Earbusters are 140 or 150 dB at 1m away. If that's the case, then they're very very loud even 30-50 meters away, but 100m or so away and all you're doing is alerting them to the fact that you're active and making noise.

1. Kind of hard to use Misterators for Noburi to detect anything when we're locked in a house and can't get significant amounts of mist outside.
2. Waiting for ten minutes seems foolish. If she's intent to hang around and kill us, then we don't want to give her more prep time. Spend the minimal time we need and no more.
3. Picking the lock is dumb. What if she's trapped it? Or just waiting for us to come out the door? Just blow up some walls and GTFO/ Explosive seals aren't a problem for OPSEC.

The main OPSEC thing we need to preserve is knowledge of Skywalkers.

Also, I'd say don't go for the closest treeline, as she might expect that.

Explosions do the same thing in terms of warning. Use of Earbusters for me would be to disable her if she's sufficiently close to get stabby stabby with us.

Why in the world would she do things "her style"?

Also, what's the difference between poison gas and genjutsu? Whether it sticks around after we dispel. If it is Mari, I'd put that "gas" being a genjustu at 65%, and 30% it being a misterator loaded with something Jiraya has access to.

Thus, I predict a roughly 60% chance that the gas is a genjutsu, and won't get any worse after we cast dispel. The odds of it being a genjutsu are a lot worse if there aren't forms that have *any* affect after a dispel. But I presume that lingering disorientation after a dispel is entirely possible. Still, that's knowledge that Hazo has that I wouldn't.

This is the way to safely mist drain as well

Replaced throwing misterators up into the sky as we ascend with having clones run into the forest to distract. Current NBS for Blow this popsicle stand is here.

I like this. Have a vote and a list of things we can do for the speed option.

[X] Action Plan: Blow this popsicle stand (Speed)

Non Binding Suggestion List for Blow this popsicle stand

  • While in the house:
    • Dispel
    • Henge into ourselves without poison - should delay any poison damage
    • Misterators in the building - make sure there are no henged ninja nearby
    • Living Roots Technique to check for enemies lying in wait for ambush outside the house
    • Put Minami in storage scroll
      • Take her seals off her person first - no need for seal-pocalypse yet
    • Use MEW and directional explosives to sculpt a charged blast for escape purposes
      • If there may be enemies outside, arm 2 - one pointed towards the enemies, one away
    • Reset an Air dome barrier for extra defense when we blow holes in the walls
    • Prepare purifiers and tunneler's friends to be able to breath through smoke
    • Prepare banshee slayers for use if we need to drop ear busters
    • Blow a pair of holes in the walls and prepare to leave
  • While exiting the house:
    • Send clones through each opening we made in the house armed with misterators and fire-log macerators
    • Have the clones attach misterators to the outside of the building to provide mist cover
    • Have the clones lay down a trail of mist via misterators, followed by exploding themselves with the fire-log macerators
    • Have Noburi check through the mist for chakra signatures: draining everything he senses dry
    • Run through the opening farthest away from any suspected enemy combatants and immediately run through the smoke upwards, throwing additional AOE fire-log macerators to the ground
    • Have clones run out of the smoke into the forest (laying a false trail, buying time to flee into the sky)
  • While running through the sky:
    • Get above clouds if possible
    • Don't stop
    • Go towards the meeting place for Akane's group
  • When reporting with Akane's group:
    • Explain everything we did, including our escape methods and Minami's death
    • Suggest immediately sending a report to Jiraiya
    • Accept Akane's leadership (she was Minami's chosen second in command)

Suggestions are welcome, though keep in mind this plan is prioritizing speed and survival over other concerns.

We could do this to approach and seal Minami's body -- drop one barrier, immediately put up another like that. Can only go so far that way though.

Note that you'd need to dispel the bigger dome before activating the new one, since solid objects in the way block Air Domes from forming iirc

We could just use a Silence Mine to keep the fact that we've turned off the dome secret - at this point the main way she's probably perceiving us, if she's bothering, is listening for sound since the Air Dome is noise cancelling.
