  • Reunite with rest of the Team
  • Inform Jiraiya via Pangolin ask if we should continue mission or abort (for all we know they track us somehow)
  • Hide in skybase?
  • Continue mission or go back to Leaf
Unless we assume that the Team is going to do this on their own.
My plan's mostly a way of getting out of the house without dying, I still am not sure what to do with the aftermath.

For that matter, the Jonin could have planted explosive charges beneath the ground and is leaving the house such that we'd blow up (recall that Air Dome seals don't have a bottom). So the best-case plan for that scenario is for us to bumrush it out immediately. Except that leaves us open for all other scenarios since we haven't recovered and the Jonin is still nearby.

Morton's Fork.

Yes. Can we not jump at shadows this time around? It's cute murder-girl, the farmer woman, and now Jiraiya.

Except Minami died because we ignored our paranoia. We knew Jiraiya's network was compromised and never looked into it. If it was actually the Yakuza who killed Minami it was our fault for not trying to find the opsec leaks in the network. If it was Jiraiya who ordered the hit we got Minami killed by not understanding politics. Either way we need to start looking at the long term picture and plotting our moves based on that. Just worrying how to stay alive is not going to cut it anymore now that we are on a bigger stage

  • Noburi uses mist sense and checks for hostile chakra signatures.

No such thing as "hostile chakra signatures" There are either chakra signatures or there aren't. If there are, what do you want to do about it?

[*]Clones activate Purifier seals to remove traces of poison.
[*]Clones search house for information/clues on WTF JUST HAPPENED.
[*]Clones remove seals from Minami's body, then seal her in a storage seal.

Can clones operate out of sight and perform complex maneuvers like searching a building and activate storage seals on their own?

Note that this technically isn't the safest way to escaping. That would be using multiple rounds of Air Dome seals to provide a consistent barrier as we ran. But it's a slow-as-fuck method relying heavily on clones, and if the Jonin cared enough to stop us the Air Domes wouldn't be enough.

I still say you're over-estimating jounin arrogance. You don't survive to be a jounin by getting into fights without insuring you're going to win.

Nobody had even suggested that it was other members of the network was compromised. Specifically, we spent ALL OUR TIME arguing whether this humble farm wife was compromised or not. In the end, we were jumping at shadows, AGAIN.

We did not ignore it. We didn't even think of it.

As a very simple first step in that: if you don't vote and you don't offer suggestions then you should not complain if things don't go the way you like.

I do believe I understand where you are coming from here, but I want to call you out on (what I perceive as) a flimsy post-hoc justification for dismissing criticism you don't like. Unless, of course, you're willing to say that nobody here should ever complain unless they actively participated in the most immediate voting cycle, regardless of any history of past involvement and contributions. (That may well be your position, but I do believe it's much harder to defend.)

Oneiros's chosen rhetoric aside, she does make a good point about prior contingencies being ignored. One can argue that they weren't included in the last plan (they weren't), but this gets back to a criticism that has been levied multiple times -- namely, that you (as QMs) do not enjoy seeing sprawling contingency lists copied from plan to plan, and for us as players it increases the barriers to entry for participation. This was indeed a point the last voting experiment was intended to address, and --

I note that it was a one-line plan with no attached non-binding suggestions. Low-effort plans have never received much in the way of XP.

-- It isn't entirely unreasonable to see this as a sort of punishment for not including the same level of detail as usual. Honest question: what do you expect to happen wrt voting and plan writing as a result of this course of events? (I would note that there was of course the other plan that received the same number of votes and obviously had more effort than "one line" put into it, complete with a link to another post for NBS.)

One additional criticism from me: Minami ran straight at the enemy-ninja-of-unknown skill-and-ability with nothing but a standard attack (using none of her jutsu or other abilities), and with no apparent thought to her team or any means of coordination with them. This does not strike me as particularly intelligent, and is at odds with Minami's established character. Further, this is especially jarring as Hazou actually does think about what to do (and thus takes a far more intelligent action). It seems to me that having a combat system in place isn't much different than rule-by-fiat if you are going to vary the degree of optimization of character actions to this degree.

...

Lest this be interpreted otherwise, I do not intend these criticisms as any sort of justification for another retcon (I believe I've made my stance on that quite clear).

  • This contact was given to us after Jiraiya learned that Minami had blackmail material on Kagome, and by extension, the Jiraiya clan.
    • As such, it would be very convenient for Jiraiya if Minami died on the mission.
  • The Jounin made no serious attempt to get past the Air Dome. We were trapped, and eventually we would have to leave the dome at which point we could be murdered or captured, and that's assuming the Jounin couldn't just blast through the dome on her own.
    • The Jounin used a lethal technique against us that we only survived due to our seal loadout. If the Jounin came from the Yakuza, she wasn't planning on letting us live to send a message.
    • On the other hand, if the Jounin came from Jiraiya, she would know that Eternal Lullaby won't kill Hazou and Noburi.
  • The Jounin used Hozuki's Mantle.
    • This is a Mist technique which Leaf managed to steal, and as such it is likely Leaf would use Hozuki's Mantle in a mission framing a Mist-nin. In fact, it's comparatively more likely for a Leaf false flag to use Hozuki's Mantle than it is for a random Mist Jounin to use it out of all the other Mist techniques. As such, Hozuki's Mantle is weak evidence towards the Jounin being from Leaf.

If the Jounin came from Jiraiya, she's long gone and we're safe, if traumatized and suffering B-class injuries from Eternal Lullaby (do these ones heal quicker by being poison?)

If the Jounin came from the Yakuza, either letting us live was an improvisation after we got the Air Dome up, or she's waiting outside to finish the job. It also means Jiraiya's spy network is probably compromised by the Yakuza, given that rooting it out is the main way they could figure out what we're doing.

Personally, it seems more likely to me that Jiraiya is behind this, but I can't be confident. If we're wrong, Jiraiya's spy network remains compromised and we might not even make it out of here. Also, regardless of whether we're right or wrong, we gain nothing by suspecting Jiraiya. I'd like to confront him and demand answers and a justification, but we know what he'd say and we know that we'd grudgingly agree with it, so we can skip to grudgingly agreeing that this was the smart move without making a fuss that costs us social standing. If this goes to Yamanaka interrogation, we even lose social standing by internally suspecting Jiraiya. So let's just play along, to Noburi and ourself, expressing proper concern that Jiraiya's spy network might be compromised and that the Yakuza Jounin might be waiting outside to finish the job, and mentally revisit these thoughts later when a Yamanaka won't see treason in our heart.

Regardless of why this happened (short plans, failed opsec, Jiraiya hit, Mist striking back, Yakuza informants, etc.), the real question is what to do now. Here's my understanding of problems we need to surmount (and proposed solutions):
  • Make sure Noburi and Hazou don't have too much problems from poison.
    • Use Medical ninjutsu and knowledge to make sure we're ok and not taking more damage from poison
    • Make sure to keep using the purifiers
  • Ensure the enemy has actually left the area
    • Dispel
    • Living Roots Technique to scan
    • Misterators & drain to check for ninja
  • Operational Security - Make sure we leave as little information behind as possible
    • Seal Minami's body
    • Pick up seals we leave behind
    • Attempt to conceal every thing we use
  • Safely exit the building
    • Likely use a combination of MEW and explosives (how many directional explosives do we have)
    • Be as tank-like as we can be - use MEW, use seals, use as much as we can
    • Make it hard to see us - use fire macerators, use misterators, use MEW
    • Escape into the sky with skywalkers while entombed in mist and/or explosive fire
      • Sky is where we're safe, but we can't have people spotting us retreating up there
  • Safely and swiftly reunite with and/or warn Akane's team
    • This seems like an emergency. Use Skywalkers and as much speed as possible
  • Hole up somewhere safe-like
    • Ideally a skytower. This seem to call for it
  • Inform Jiraiya as quickly as possible
    • Keiko's summons, or, if that team is dead (unlikely because Kagome), run back to Leaf
  • Debrief with the whole team and decide if we continue with the mission
    • Likely we will, possible we get assigned a new team leaders

Hazō: And then I worked out that we could bring Minami back to life!

Jiraiya: *continues thumping his head against his desk*
Oh yes, please revolutionize Leaf medical techniques on top of their tactical doctrine and sealing theory. That'll help keep things stable. :p

Can clones operate out of sight and perform complex maneuvers like searching a building and activate storage seals on their own?
I *believe* so?

One thing that we probably *should* have been doing but didn't is checking for signs of ninja monitoring on every contact.

Basically, it doesn't take five ninja to deliver a message. So while one or two go in to make contact, the other three should be scouting the perimeter, looking for hidden ninja observers that might indicate the contact has been compromised.

This is doubly important since the hivemind knows that some of Jiraiya's network has been compromised. If we can find any that have been compromised would get huge brownie points.

That's a good fuckin' point. I'm glad it occurred to us relatively early on (at least, after the first country we go through rather than the first three). Good call here @Briefvoice.

though checking for ninja won't be enough. The people in Iron will just be civilians. Will need to be extra vigilant

Edit: so we should be investigating all of the neighboring businesses

I was clearly on the team that thought we should have been proactive about it. My entire point is that we have to think farther ahead than we have been. So right now we need to start working on long term plans to deal with the Yakuza and leaf political scene more. We can't afford to just worry about our immediate response.

Things we will need to decide upon (otherwise known as part of why multiple plans here will be helpful):
  • Do we wait in place for a while, or try to bust out immediately?
  • Do we use skywalkers, risking an opsec breach but finishing more quickly, or go on foot so that we avoid the opsec breach but risk additional ambushes?
  • Do we make some attempt to ID our assaliant, or just leave?
  • Do we go to wherever the agreed upon meeting place is and wait, or do we attempt to intercept Akane, Keiko, and Kagome before they arrive?
I don't expect everybody will agree on the answers to the above (though most people will likely agree that we shouldn't pursue the jounin who just killed our leader), so I could easily see the benefit of there being 4 or so different plans. I believe it's possible the thread could make a few tactics posts and maintain them with short plans referencing them. I don't believe the thread will make 4 or 5 distinct 1000+ word plans.

Was Minami carrying the messages to the other contacts? I don't think the enemy ninja took them. Actually, whether Minami had them or not, I don't think the ninja checked what she was carrying at all, am I wrong? Maybe she did while Hazou was fighting the gas?
