Keep in mind that this situation would have gone MUCH WORSE per WoG.

There is no way that Jiraiya would deliberately frag his own clanmates in attempt to eliminate Minami, which is going to happen if everyone is there. What would be the point of gaining more family members and losing it and seeing your wife in tear?
Except Jiraiya gave us the new contacts in Honey which prompted us to split up. Why? Because they were on the opposite sides of the country.

It wouldn't surprise me that Jiraiya gave us these orders specifically because he knew it would prompt Minami to split the team up, with her as one leader and Akane (or maybe Hazou) as the other. And he'd give orders to not kill Akane by ordering only a kill on a Melee Weapons user, which only fits the description of Minami Nikko.

This implies a level of predictive ability that even an S-ranker, is unlikely to possess, especially with a teenager he is not personally familiar with. Also note that any combat situation is UNPREDICTABLE. There is no guarantee that the assassin or anyone else will ONLY kill Minami Nikko or that the dice works out the way it did.

If anything, this is like the worst way to kill off Minami.

He also gave an order to not use Skywalkers unless it was necessary. That would have given an agent time to arrive ahead of us.

Jiraiya has, apparently, loyalty indexes of his ANBU, and dossiers on the clan head wives. Which suggests that Konoha keeps tabs on people's personality. Minami would certainly have a file in some heavily guarded cabinet.

Yup. That's another reason why I'm suspicious: at the beginning of the mission he gave us orders to use Skywalkers but now that Goda was caught he's telling us to not use them unless absolutely necessary? What?

Short plans resulted in minimal discussion, which resulted in a one line plan getting voted in with no contingencies or suggestions. From an EXP standpoint alone that's going to cost us significantly, and while a more detailed plan might not have helped us here it can very easily mean the difference between life and death in other situations.

No it did not. We didn't include any non-binding suggestion and we were too lazy to think/tired of anything. IIRC, there were critiques made on plans, but no planmakers made much if any effort. In my case, nobody bothered to critique my plan.

I also voted for the simplest plan because I was afraid that the other plan wasn't good enough, reasoning that a simple plan is unlikely to go wrong. In hindsight, that was a mistake.

Alternative non-Jiraiya explanation for how the Yakuza found us:

After Goda disappeared, the Yakuza launched an immediate investigation. They quickly keyed in on reports of ninja openly fleeing town at top speed from Ise. Deciding that it was likely related to Goda's kidnapping, they launched an investigation of every place Goda had been hanging out. Tanaka cracked like an egg under the pressure, perhaps having foolishly spoken to his co-workers about how he was "definitely going to be leaving soon". Under torture, he confessed everything about being part of Jiraiya's network.

Tanaka took the scroll and shoved it into his satchel, pulling out a trio of other scrolls in the process. Each had been tagged with a distinctly-colored chop; he selected the red one and held it out. "This one is for Lord Jiraiya, urgent priority. The others are for two of my counterparts, one in Keishi and one in a small town in Hot Springs."

Oh look at that... Tanaka knows other contacts in the network!

The Yakuza realized they had to send Leaf a message. They realize the couriers were responsible for Goda's kidnapping and are likely still on their route. They hire a missing-nin jounin for top dollar to go to one of the contacts that Tanaka knew about, kill and replace the contact, and wait.

Everything proceeds as you saw.

I know this is a bit of a longshot, but we might be able to revive Minami.

It sounds like she died from blood loss, not getting turned into hamburger.

It's also only been a couple minutes at most since she died. Her brain shouldn't have become unsalvageable, and her cells should still be alive.

If Noburi can close her neck wound using her still living cells, we could then try injecting her with chakra water to act as a replacement for blood, and stimulating her heart with electrical shocks from ninjutsu or a seal.

The massive chakra transfer might be enough to keep her alive for a short time, despite the blood loss.

Hazō: And then I worked out that we could bring Minami back to life!

Jiraiya: *continues thumping his head against his desk*

It doesn't matter.

It is still a terrible way to kill off Minami, endangering your clanmembers in the process.

He gave us a good plausible reason. He doesn't want to reveal his trump-card until Leaf is ready.

I am going to focus on making sure that the still-alive us are going to survive the poisoning, and then revive Minami if it's even possible.

His reasoning to not use them because of more active agents in the region isn't illogical. If Jiraiya really planned this he executed it perfectly because nobody can really say either way. The Jonin was probably under a henge too, so no way to identify her.

The good thing is, we can finally lead the Team again! Disaster ahoy!

They could have interrogated the contact in Ise (who gave us intel on Goda)...

Actually that makes a lot of sense. It's been several days since the attack and the Yakuza have to know something went on. That combined with the fact that ninja (us) were spotted running on roofs to get out of Ise means that they'd start interrogating, especially with the bouncer contact. They torture him, they get info on Jiraiya (since the contact knows we work for Jiraiya). Yakuza around the (everywhere) would start looking for other members of Jiraiya's network and find this contact, then kill + replace.

I still think it's Jiraiya since they showed usage of Hozuki's Mantle and a Mist-nin affiliated with the Yakuza would want to capture us alive.
Good, glad someone else thought of that possibility.

Then why in the seven hells didn't he tell us that earlier!?

When we were jumping at shadows  with that cute murder-girl, some of us had figured out what Konoha is doing, which finally led people to stop messing with said cute murder-girl.

Then Jiraiya told us why we shouldn't use skywalkers for the duration of the journey. He was afraid of the exact scenario that led to our team being compromised.

As entertaining as it is to speculate on how/if Jiraiya is the one who set this up, I can't help but feel like it's brain-space better devoted to the issue of troubleshooting ideas for how to get the hell out of here. Rain check?

I meant during the first mission briefing, when we first left Leaf with Minami. He told us to use Skywalkers and we apparently had no issue using them friggin everywhere (hyperbole).

OK so here's a basic subplan for getting the fuck out of here. It's not complete since I'm trying to figure out if the Jonin would stay to trip us up and why they'd do that instead of digging below the Air Dome to destroy one of the two seals before killing us.
  • Main Questline:
    • Dispel.
    • Heal whatever Noburi can do quickly medical-wise. Do not push him given what's already happened to us (disorientation, malus die).
      • Do this while we're doing everything else.
    • Confirm that the ninja has actually left the house.
      • Activate Earth Release: Living Roots to track the enemy's movements.
      • Activate Misterators inside the dome.
      • Create clones (Earth or Water, it doesn't matter). Give Purifier seals + storage seal.
      • Activate a second Air Dome, such that clones are between the two domes.
      • Clones deactivate the outermost Air Dome.
      • Noburi uses mist sense and checks for hostile chakra signatures.
    • Search the house.
      • Clones activate Purifier seals to remove traces of poison.
      • Clones search house for information/clues on WTF JUST HAPPENED.
      • Clones remove seals from Minami's body, then seal her in a storage seal.
    • Escape.
      • Calculate the nearest position to natural cover (trees, hills...).
      • Use explosives to blow up the side of the house facing that cover.
        • Also do the same with another point in the house, and send in fake clones of us (1 Hazou + 1 Noburi) going in that direction.
      • Run. Chakra boost and Misterator our path.
      • After getting to cover, Skywalk away.
Note that this technically isn't the safest way to escaping. That would be using multiple rounds of Air Dome seals to provide a consistent barrier as we ran. But it's a slow-as-fuck method relying heavily on clones, and if the Jonin cared enough to stop us the Air Domes wouldn't be enough.
Criticism welcome.

Nah, Akane is second in command. She'll be team leader for now. Unless, of course, the Yakuza also killed her, in which case Hazou's probably the team leader.

Yes. Can we not jump at shadows this time around? It's cute murder-girl, the farmer woman, and now Jiraiya.

Let focus on getting the team back alive and abort the mission, assuming Noburi and Hazō don't die from the poisoning.

Criticism welcome.

  • Reunite with rest of the Team
  • Inform Jiraiya via Pangolin ask if we should continue mission or abort (for all we know they track us somehow)
  • Hide in skybase?
  • Continue mission or go back to Leaf
Unless we assume that the Team is going to do this on their own.
