Yeah, either: A) he meant to manipulate us/put us off-balance and we have to downgrade our assessment of his benevolence, or B) he didn't mean to, and we have to downgrade our assessment of his social intelligence. And we haven't heard anything about the Nara being asocial geniuses like the Mori or whatever, so I'm heavily biased towards A.

Guys, I am going to trust Jiraiya and Mari-sensei on this one.

Given the way that Minami described the Nara and Jiraiya described Shikaku, I think we should place most of our bets on option B).

Guys, it can be both "I respect you so I'm not going to put on airs" and "I am aware that this will put you off balance to my advantage" :p

Operation spaceship is a go?

We can nuke them from orbit; it's the only way to be sure after all.

Alien, get out. This chapter was clearly dedicated to Firefly! Yeah!
The worldshaking revelations were nice and all, and the information about Keiko's reaction to Shikaku's speech was good to have, and the "Mari-sensei cooking thing" was funny, but what really stuck with me was THE GORRAM FIREFLY REFERENCE. And it was so perfectly used too...

Anyway, back on topic: does this mean that Hanzo is going to use firearms with the same trigger-happy attitude Mal does?

Question: Have Hazou and friends acclimated to booze yet? If not, and we assume that "ease of writing" = "!fun", this would seem prime opportunity for a monster XP plan. If the tribe-mind carries over to the subconscious, it might even lead to more board-breaking contributions.

Plus, it might help interrogating Kagome. I really want to see drunk Kagome.

There is an alternate thread which did not pursue the, "crazy ninja in the woods" lead. It is an inferior narrative.

When you are interacting with a sufficiently smart person, and you feel a certain way, then the way that you feel is the way that you are supposed to feel.

In other words, "Sure is convenient that Shikaku inhabits a social framework in which he gets to "respect" somebody by putting them off-balance. I wonder who that benefits."

I think you're not looking at the costs of different conversational strategies. Sure Shikaku could have made Hazou feel, er, "on-balance". He could have done at the cost of being able to cover less ground during the conversation. Getting less information across. Not doing as deep a dive into the things he wanted to talk about. Not acting in such a way as to encourage Hazou to reconsider and think more deeply after the conversation was over.

"I wonder who that benefits."

Hazou. Hazou was the one who benefited. Not a doubt in my mind.

So trying to put some training plans together for Hazō and we have lots of options.
We can get sealing 21 for 63 exp
We can get deception 25 for 51 exp
We can get technique hacking 11 for 66 exp
We Can get diplomacy 14 for 69 exp
For only 23 exp we can get stealth 30 when using skywalkers
Roki 14 cost 60 exp

Personally recommend stealth technique hacking and diplomacy as most viable options

This was a fun update to write. Surprisingly, the hardest part was not the writing but the discussion with the other QMs...we weren't sure how much of the worldbuilding to put in Kagome's mouth. In the end, we decided that with his background he would probably have had access to enough information to put the pieces together in order to get what you see. Hazards of rational fiction -- sometimes you need to let your characters tell more of what you've been discussing than you might otherwise choose.
But thats okay because if you mix in things that sound completely crazy and your mouth peice is 'BOOM SQUISH man' it can still be hard to know what to believe.

Jesus fuck this update was awesome.

Guys, when @eaglejarl heavily implies that nothing can go wrong in a plan and you should definitely vote for it, go balls to the wall on that shit.

Also, a few reactions. It's two hours past my bedtime, so I'm not going to check if they've been posted.

"Poor idiots. Didn't realize that they would need hands to reverse the henge, and that was back before henge was patched so it would break if you hit it hard enough.

HOLY FUCK. Evidence of an observed Reality Rewrite? When God remakes the world, the PCs generally don't notice any changes.

Kagome shook his head. "Nah, don't need to. Easier just to kill them and bring 'em back."

Hazō blinked. "Excuse me?"

BINGO! RESURRECTION NO JUTSU. HORCRUXES FOR EVERYONE!

Of course, they're still using the old version of henge,

Wait, I retract my prior statement about henge. It's probably just two different, but similar, techniques. Occam's Razor.

I'm not 100% sold on Shikaku isn't a douche but with the new info gained it does look like he didn't want to bother with dumbing shit down. So maybe he used the story to highlight the importance of creating countermeasures for what you create which makes sense.

Now we just need to create a flak cannon seal type thing, shoot some storage seals into the air they timer unseal shrapnel or something similar and any unauthorized personel (skywalkers not in leaf skybunkers) turn into rapidly falling meat chunks. I don't think I articulated this well but you get the idea, plus we can sell this as leaf defensive tech to whomever in leaf's hierarchy

If this system works well enough we can even have these things either turn into artillery or just have them in the hands of ANBU or defense ninja to set up on the fly (from storage seals maybe) to avoid them being targets

EDIT: we could probably even have the flak ammo (Time delay shrapnel storage scrolls) coded for height gain and maybe radius a couple colours in a row to indicate the time delay or height gain if pointed up, then another color for size of the deadly radius, finally a third color for any special type of thing being unsealed (Metal shards, napalm, poison lethal or otherwise).

Potentially we might be able to design an inverse barrier seal that creates a capture bubble allowing leaf to capture the Air raiders

Sooooo...

There is no Naruto, there is only the Nine-tailed Fox.

Huh.

Ever read The Empty Cage?
I read that, yeah. Great story, would definitely recommend.
Haven't read this, but I'll check it out.
We never got an answer to the first question.
Yeah I realized that as I climbed into bed, sorry for that. Presumably you went back and asked him about it later, so you do know the answer. The others aren't around right now but we'll get you an answer as soon as we can confer.

It is definitely okay for you to go out and about, though.

AAA, so good!

Remember, real world conspiracy theorists also start from true facts.

Kagome has the mindset of a conspiracy theorist.

It's not paranoia if they really are out to get you.

There's probably a bit of pareidolia and bias-towards-scariness going on here, though, yeah.

Jiraiya scratched his forehead so that his face was momentarily hidden. Ninja-sharp ears allowed Hazō to hear the muttered, "Oh gods, another one." Keiko's ears must have been similarly sharp, because for just a moment her smile flicked slightly wider.

LUPCHANZ!

Seriously, though, I'm glad Keiko's able to take this like "yep, I'm one of those" rather than "Jiraiya of the Sannin is disappointed in me, I have let down my team once again, I Am A Failure".

...That harried-husband bit is doing a lot to get the team comfortable with J, isn't it.

("Yes, dear, it's a very clever ploy that you came up with all by yourself and could stop any time you wanted."
"Godsdamnit, woman!")

Went to sleep before the update was posted. Just woke up and O.O

LUPCHA-

DO NOT
WE DO NOT WANT THIS TO BECOME CANON
PLEASE FOR THE LOVE OF GOD
WE DO NOT WANT THIS TO BECOME CANON
DO NOT

Hm.

I've got my eyes on you.

@eaglejarl NEVER SAYS THIS UPDATE WAS TRUTHFUL OR GENERALLY TRUTHFUL

Just to break it down, things @eaglejarl said:
  1. We (the QMs) were not sure how much of this Kagome would know
  2. We decided that Kagome would have access to certain pieces of information.
  3. Given that information, this is how Kagome put what information he had (and only the information he had) into a single cohesive narrative
The man is trolling us. I trust him not to lie in posts to us but he never actually gave us any information about the truth value of Kagome's statements.

Kagome has almost certainly filled in the gaps in his actual knowledge with insane speculation. So yes, there's some information in this update but you cannot take it as gospel or even a very highly distorted view of reality.

What we have is a giant blob of speculation gleaned from a few facts by a insane hermit.

@eaglejarl IS TROLLING US.

Yes, I think is important enough to get huge screaming in Naruto orange.

Hah, good one.
Oh, man. That would have been my most epic troll ever. Pity I was so dang tired last night.

And yes, if you thought I was trolling you that hard then the giant orange was definitely warranted.

EDIT: I missed that I had Cariyaga's quote in multiquote and originally post this below his with no response to yours. That was a braino in my part, sorry.

Before we get ourselves killed doing invisible ink experiments: @OliWhail @eaglejarl @Velorien Given what Hazou knows of sealing, is there any reason he can think of that it wouldn't work?
EDIT: There is no reason that Hazou knows, no. Kagome and Jiraiya have been very nervous about the idea but based on what they know about his bloodline they aren't willing to completely shut him down.

So the sage and dummy are incredibly powerful immortals who have worked to make the world a better place and this is the best they could do?

I have to ask are they even trying?
Note that things really have been getting better over the last few centuries. The Warring Clans Period was awful.

@eaglejarl @Velorien @OliWhail

Did Hazou have a chance to look through the seal catalogue?
He flipped through it to get all the seals into Iron Nerve, but he didn't have time to read it yet.

Note: I brainoed when posting the statement above and have corrected it.

Also, "He Has No Fingers" is brilliant. Lovecraft, except better and not as boring.

PSA: Thank you guys so much for voting this plan in. This was the most fun I've had in weeks. I'm still squeeing inside about getting to write it.

Can I get a link to this plan? I have read a fair bit of this quest and the assorted posts but i generally skip over plan posts so I don't know which plan wins or not
