Oh, one other thing. ...Really? They're giving Keiko back her summon scroll? Wow. I did not expect that.

Haven't we learned our lesson about meta knowledge? We have no guarantee that Akatsuki is in Rain, and even if they were, why not join Akatsuki? If they're remotely as powerful as in canon, they surely could teach us quite a lot.

Actually we have IC evidence for this.

We know that Mari theorises that there's a legendarily powerful ninja in Rain covering the country in chakra-rain that alerts them to anyone entering.

No meta-gaming involved.

I'm certainly missing something; don't we want someplace where we're good with terrain?

They're good with the terrain. We aren't. Edit: ninja'd.

The natives are too good with the terrain. Not you guys.
  1. Convince the natives to join our party
  2. Have them teach us their secrets
  3. We now control territory where we're abnormally powerful
Clearly, nothing can go wrong with this plan.

Legendarily powerful ninja? Screw Jiraiya, let's get that guy on our side! Who's up for joining Akatsuki?

I mean, I have actually considered that on multiple occasions. Maybe if we knew anyone from Akatsuki that could guarantee our safety, but otherwise...

On that note, add Yahiko to the list of people to resurrect if we learn to...

Village info from the player knowledge doc:

Background on ninja villages
estimated strength of their ninja villages, stance towards civilians, and connections with rest of the world?

  • Iron: No organized ninja village that you're aware of, although they do have ninja. Bit of a second-rate place -- not much in the way of natural resources or anything to attract outside attention.
  • Waterfall: Allied with Earth.
  • Snow: No one on the team really knows. They trade a bit, but not much.
  • Tea: One strong clan and some non-clan ninja.
  • Fire: 1200 - 1400; supportive; allied with Noodle, Tea, River, and Sand; generally open to trade
  • Mist: Mist: ~1300; civilians are producers and second-class citizens; suspicious, allies with Nagi and Honey, although definitely as senior partners and not equals.

What about Rivers, Grass, and Fang/Claw?
  • River: Allies with Fire and Sand. Don't know exact numbers on their village, but not large. They trade a lot of wood to Wind, as well as some exotic supplies derived from their local chakra wildlife. Don't know about their attitude towards civilians.
  • Grass: Not explicitly allied with anyone, but the de facto leader of the minor villages in the area. Strong enough not to be a client state of Fire. 200-400 ninja.
  • Fang/Claw: None of you know much about them. They're in BFN.

How far does Water's sphere of influence reach? Particularly, how many of the islands are allies of Water?
  • Allies with Nagi and Honey, although definitely as senior partners and not equals. They don't care that much about the other islands, but those islands would likely fall in line if Mist made a strong enough suggestion. -EJ

I would say go to Iron or Tea, as we have contacts with Jiraiya there and we could get a mission or something to get back into his good graces.

It does her no personal good to hold it, and if we die with it on a mission it gives it to someone else; whereas if it's kept in Leaf if we die on a mission, oh well, now the Leaf has the Pangolin summon scroll too.

She's the Pangolin Summoner and taking the scroll away from her would probably not be good for relations between the Toads and Pangolins all things considered.

Alight. There's a lot to do this update. It looks like we're returning to the good stuff of the quest. I'ma write up a pros-cons list of the border nations. But first! Parting gifts. The idea has been raised in Discord that we could leave Jiraiya our flute. I think the idea has some merit. Basically, it's a sign of trust to Jiraiya which has personal significance to Hazou. There are a variety of things he could use the flute for. Here are the obvious examples I can think of:

  • Leverage against our mother, should he ever come into contact with her.
  • Leverage against Hazou, since the flute has sentimental significance to him (home & Akane)
  • Leverage against Akane, since he could give it to her if he wanted

We should be discussing ideas and plans every single night.

Also, Mari might tell us to shut up except in discussing which place we should go to.

Seems like a bad idea to give Jiraiya things we'll want back.

Y'know, since the thread has something of a "screw Jiraiya, let's just fuck off into space" sentiment right now.

I mean, I know the thread mentality is slowly coming around to "screw the world, let's just fuck off into space," but we do have some research we need to do in the meantime. And I doubt the two of us can convince the rest of the thread to abandon Akane for the cool embrace of space.

We may be able to work with that.

QMs: is there standard code like Morse code or UTF-8 by which we could send a message to a hypothetical legendary ninja by a pattern of substituting in and out of the border of chakra rain?
This is interesting but I feel like we're relying to much on OOC knowledge. Which is asking the QMs to do something bad.

Countries where we can't go:
  • ire (we've been kicked out)
  • Iron (there's still ninja chaos going down there until we're told otherwise)
  • Rain (akatsuki HQ)
  • River (are too good with the terrain)
  • Rice (at least until we have a way of paying back the mayor and the civilian woman)
  • Hot Springs (we probably shouldn't be anywhere near HS for a while)
  • Noodle (Mist ninja)
  • Water (Mist HQ)
Bingo! Which is to say, we can play bingo for Countries and Territories Hazou is no Longer Allowed to Visit. Here's the card generator.

Ok. Here's a summary of pros and cons to each of the countries (that I know of) that border Fire.

  • Hot Springs
    • Pros
      • Technically a demilitarized zone
    • Cons
      • We've made enemies there (civilian and ninja)
      • There is likely still an ongoing investigation into our actions there
      • Zabuza is known to have been there very recently, specifically looking for us
  • Rice
    • Pros
      • We know a fair amount about the political situation
      • Entire nation is unfriendly towards village ninja
      • We have made contact with the higher-ups (albeit not the friendliest, but not particularly hostile)
    • Cons
      • They know we're from Mist, information may travel back to Zabuza
      • Inoue is mildly in the debt of the village leader
      • We left trails going here from our escape from Hot Springs, so it's a logical investigation area
  • Iron
    • Pros
      • Noburi can probably get medical training
      • There is a civilian village we've interacted with who likes us
      • Kagome likely has a hiding place
      • No major indigenous ninja presence
    • Cons
      • May still have hunter-nin from the Liberator incident
      • Some people in the major city may know that Noburi was there (because barrel)
      • Possibility to run into old enemies (members of Liberator village, Yakuza)
  • Waterfall
    • Pros
      • I don't think we've made an impact there
      • Allied with Earth (so less likely to let hunter-nin in?)
    • Cons
      • Allied with Earth (so a major village will be after us should we screw up)
  • Grass
    • Pros
      • Not allied with any major hidden village
      • We haven't made an impact there yet
    • Cons
      • Relatively strong for a minor village (strongest of the minors, and not reliant on Fire)
  • Rain
    • Pros
      • There's someone strong there we could potentially swear fealty to
    • Cons
      • They have chakra sensing rain. WTF.
  • River
    • Pros
      • Only interaction has been stealing a boat (I think). Unlikely to remember us?
      • exotic chakra beasts? Sounds fun and like a good place to gather supplies.
    • Cons
      • Might remember us since we stole a boat and had a civilian village chasing us when we last left?
  • Tea
    • Pros
      • We know a fair amount about local villages
      • Near Hidden Mountain
      • We didn't make a huge splash when we were there
      • Kinda hidden from the world by Fire
    • Cons
      • Near Hidden Mountain
      • We have been there before (who knows how tracking works)
      • The guy who hired us for Hot Springs knows we were from there

Where ever we end up we should dedicate a week to each of our teammates. What ever it is they would like help on or some goal they would like to accomplish, or even as simple as doing their portion of chores for camp. We should do this as part of our apology to them for our misconduct within Leaf.
