You know what would be funny? Asuma and the ANBU never actually got to EMN Isan. They got there and someone else already wiped them out before Leaf got to.

ITACHI: What are you smiling about? Do I even want to know?
HIDAN: I felt a great disturbance in the world's chakra. As if hundreds of voices had suddenly cried out in terror, and were suddenly silenced.
ITACHI: Nope, I didn't want to know.
HIDAN: Wanna threaten Hazō about it while I praise him about it?
ITACHI: Sure, I'm game.

Do you think it would make sense to include a line about what Ami told us during our last conversation? About how internalizing our grief for Akane doesn't make rational sense if we still trust our ability to do necromancy?
That's what I way trying for with "Ami's right, we've been acting ridiculous". Do you have a better way to write it?
Also, why is this quoting the bit about snowflake? I think talking to Snowflake about our relationship with Ami is just going to hurt her.

Remind me what this line is supposed to mean in context?
"Let Hazoupilot decide how much prep to do, ect". Is there a better way I should write this?
Alternately, can someone with a better grasp on the sealing mechanics recommend how to go about this research?

She should have bound Hazō in a dungeon and forced him to think
Not too late to do this for safety. As a prophylactic.
What kind of person cared more about a single individual in front of them than about five hundred strangers in another country?
💙
Snowflake knew she was awake only because it was impossible for her to interact with a sleeping Kei.
Oooo. Love crunchy fluff.
The sudden burst of dysphoria barely slowed her down as she pulled the pink ribbon out of her hair and headed for the door.
Huh. On to read about twin dysphoria. Would be quite the added complication if Kei was transmasc and Snowflake was not.
He'd been the one to strip himself and Akane of agency in favour of a man who deemed five hundred deaths of allied ninja acceptable after mere months of half-heartedly exploring alternatives.
Will never get back the chance to see how half-hearted it was or was not before the call was made.
With a fate that forced him to carve away his sanity and his ethics in order to save the world when all he wanted was a moment's peace in which to uplift it.
FtCASaEiOtStW. Not the same ring as FtD.

You walk into a casino with the change in your pockets. You can play at any table you want. Compromise no morals. The ownership of the casino is split among big players. You start earning chips. The scale tips. You have enough chips to change the balance of power. Do you cash in on the big player with the closest vision to you of the casino's future, 'limit the tables you play' or keep earning chips? More chips give more flexibility to pick smaller, more aligned winners. Wait until you can buy the whole casino, risk losing it all? Secretly keep earning chips under a big player's wing?

Unwritten rule of many stories, Katniss is not allowed to give up the light saber to Gandalf. Giving skywalkers to Leaf set the story on a less independent, safer path. Powerful to see the consequences of heart wrenching compromise to eke out long term uplift.

Sorry about the sanity. SSA goes brrrr.
The floor was Nostalgic Mari's floor of the Open Hearth Inn (though Mariko was absent today), but the walls were Scholarly Mari's bookshelves, all too reminiscent of the Hokage's Office, and the braziers roared with Wrathful Mari's flames, constantly on the point of spilling out and setting fire to them. The ceiling was a patchwork of Guardian Mari's reassuring grey stone and the jet-black of Masochistic Mari's dungeon, Bondsmith Mari's golden chains straining to hold them together and leave no gaps through which anyone could see outside–because outside there was nothing but Bleak Mari's all-consuming void.
Evocative.
What do you think, do we focus on making sure Hazō does nothing stupid in the immediate future
Pleeeeeease. Still, feels bad to lose hard won faith and trust.
Uplift Mari was smaller than ever, seated uncomfortably in the spot furthest away from Wrathful Mari's braziers.
Goodbye, green eyes.
"Doesn't fucking matter?!" Wrathful Mari roared from the heart of the fire. "That piece of shit killed Akane and it doesn't matter?! I should've said screw all of you and dealt with him when we had the chance. What's the fucking point of us if we just sit around and let whoever feels like it cut our family's throats one by one?"
Welcome, red eyes.
"Spare me the sentimentality. We all know it was a done deal. We knew it the second we first heard about Elemental Mastery.
Sad we do not get to see the Council of Maris react to a spared Isan. Leaving Isan mostly peacefully felt like one of the first big moral wins for the team. Beating the odds of a death world, earning more faith in uplift from team. Slowly scraped the team out of EN mentality by beating the odds over and over again. Do not let sanity checkers' take sanity damage. Value of our closest allies believing in us to saving the world is more important than pure numbers alone.
"That too," Practical Mari agreed. "Playing ball with the Hokage is the optimal play. No, for as long as he's willing to kill even allies if they stand in his way, it's the only play."
Be more obedient to more murderous kage? Yagura shrug.

If Asuma come back vulnerable, would be good to put ourselves in a place where he comes to us for moral validation.
"The stench of the swamp never washes off," Bleak Mari said with a strange satisfaction as above, Bondsmith Mari's chains creaked, the soul-metal starting to deform. "You bring it with you wherever you go, until you don't even realise things can smell any other way. Or maybe you bought a ticket to Tears of Red expecting to see a comedy?"
You, you word good.
Nevertheless, she was not alone. She had not been alone for days.
Scary.
"I always knew you would be the cause of Isan's destruction," Takahashi-sensei told her.
False. It lies. Does Shadow Element need a side effect warning label?
"You protested," Takahashi-sensei agreed. "Commendable. I shall bear this information back to Kenji in the afterlife. Surely, he will be impressed at the lengths you went to 'to repay Ui's debt to Isan, as well as your own'."

"What was I to have done?" Kei asked. "I spent many nights debating the issue with Shikamaru. My intellect was not equal to his. I could not shatter his projections with either reasoning or data."
Glad she defended herself.
What is... the average long-distance travel speed for a shinobi?"
... you know what you did.
"Oh, nonsense," Takahashi-sensei touched his forehead in an Isanese gesture of dismissal.
Shape of an L?
"The tapir does not raise its snout when the south wind blows."
...
"One ultimate opportunity," Takahashi-sensei clarified. "A chance to demonstrate who he is, to the world and to himself, such that no other event in his life will bring him the same infusion of clarity. For you, Kei, that opportunity just came and went. What have you learned about yourself?"
Kei could not look at him. "That I cannot protect anything. That they will always die, as individuals or en masse, and my efforts will always be too pathetic to save them."
Noooooooooooo, baby. Sad again to lose the chance to see what Kei would have thought if Isan was saved.
"I was aware that Akane's life was in danger, yet I did not marshal every resource at my disposal to save her because I did not love her enough. I was aware of Isan's imminent destruction, yet I did not exhaust my every option and dedicate myself, heart and soul, to its salvation because I did not care enough.
Noooooooooooo. You did your best, girl. Game is rigged.
"I am not a good person like Akane, and despite my delusions, could never be like her. I am cold and distant, and I do not love people as she did or seek to make bonds with them as she did. I claim to be motivated by duty and responsibility, but if I truly cared about the people I describe as in my care, I would seek to connect with them instead of being… afraid of them. I would strive to fundamentally change their lives as Hazō does. If I truly cared, I would step into the sunlight for their sake instead of living half-shrouded in darkness."
Let go of the bad thoughts, the comparisons. You have people who love you for who you are.
er next step, then, was to research a suitable reagent. Obviously, this would require the utmost subtlety, but she could request that Snowflake–

Snowflake.

"Unfortunately," she informed Takahashi-sensei, "suicide is not an option."
Unbearably close call. Thank Jashin for Snowflake.
"I can never follow Akane's path. That much should have been obvious to me from the beginning. However, she also cannot follow mine. Efficiency does not demand the capacity to love; it demands a willingness to sacrifice."
Scary.
"And what is it you intend to sacrifice, Kei?" the phantom of Takahashi-sensei asked as it began to fade back into oblivion.

"Were you not listening?" Kei replied. "Whatever my duty requires."
The Shade fades away, leaving behind a more Nara Kei.

Lovely chapter! So many words have gone into the struggles and relationships of these characters so one of the most rewarding things to read is how dire choices illuminate their palimpsests, painful though it may be. Punching not bad, either.

That's what I way trying for with "Ami's right, we've been acting ridiculous". Do you have a better way to write it?
Actually have a plan command of "tell Kei what Ami had to say about Hazō's grief" or something instead of just a verbatim first person phrase that the QMs can interpret as a throwaway line.

We might not get to talk to Kei as soon as Snowflake does, but at the end of the day they still share a memory. If you're worried about reminding Snowflake how Ami doesn't care all that much about her, then note that we should convey the actual content instead of the hugs and such. Or just include a line that Hazō should be mindful of that issue.

Next Chapter (Isanese Loredump)…

"So yeah, turns out the reason Isan existed was to subjugate a tapir-demon through mass ritual observance, and now that they're dead it's broken free. It's already subsumed all of Tea and a little of Fire, and every inch of land it devours makes medical ninjutsu get a bit weaker worldwide."

Kei has raised her Deceit to 15. She will inform Hazō that she wishes to train it further in order to facilitate better OPSEC, both on Elemental Mastery and on the many other secrets her various organisations entrust her with.
Years ago, I was already telling everyone that we need to prioritize raising everyone's Deceit sky-high to be able to hide all our inevitable future treasons and shinies from authority figures, but nooo, we instead prioritized silly things we're not using like combat stats or pottery jutsu (MONTHS of all Leaf sealmasters peering at Great Seal replicas yet NO results more useful than were obtained by ASKING HARUMITSU FOR IDEAS) and now five hundred and one person is dead and nobody wants to tell Hazou anything and Kei has decided to start raising Deceit anyway but it's too late it's way too late now we are all going to die.

Tch.

Isan Lore relating to the Sage's Five companions.
You got me to do some reading and I came across something interesting. I went back to review our convo with Shikamaru concerning the five. His description of Tama being referenced as Hierophant might be more than a coincidence, especially in the context of the Pangolins no longer using the title.

@Noumero Is this of any use to the Conclave at all?

"I see you have been performing quite some research of your own," Shikamaru said, but without approval. "Well, I suppose it is hardly a clan secret. Obviously, I have less information on the other three, if indeed their claims are as accurate as ours. However, if you desire hints to spur on your own research, I can tell you that Tama is often referred to as the Hierophant. She was dedicated to some deity whose name is now long lost, and with its name on her lips, she could heal or destroy with a touch, as well as 'command the faithless'—whatever that means. The rites according to which the deity is to be worshipped have also been lost, or so the Tama claim. Some also call her the Deathless, alleging that she was a kami who bestowed blessings and curses and could not be slain in battle, but this seems unlikely since it would imply that the Tama themselves have kami blood.

"All right," Noburi said. "So Shima and Fukasaku were really impressed with me for knowing the name 'Pasafutsu', which is kind of funny given I heard it from them to begin with. Apparently, only really old summons know that name, because he gave it up when he became the Pangolin Hierophant."

Cribbing some parts from @Left-Hand Mutant. I'm also choosing to research Fourfold Seal because it seems like a jonin tier static fortification seal and we desperately need survivability. I can't really think of any further scenes that can help with Necromancy aside from the Ami meeting, but that should be a separate update of its own. Any help to refine plan is much appreciated.

  • Ami's right, we've been acting ridiculous. It's time to get to work.
  • Offscreen Sealing:
    • Continue the Minato sealchain. Follow Hazou's Intuition.
    • Research the Fourfold Seal of Preservation. Follow Hazou's Intuition.
  • Rift sealing:
    • Talk to Kagome.
      • We have finished MS6 and he has finished MS7, does he think we can start researching rift sealing yet?
      • Has any of his Rift Sealing Ideas timeline changed since learning MS7?
      • The displays on the minato seals look similar to Naruto's jinchuuriki seal. Spend some time on it together to see if any further insight could be gleamed. Cross-reference with sketches we took from Naruto's seal.
    • Reo was learning TH. Ask Reo to explain some of the unknown jargon in MS9 and MS10 notes and see if he has anything to say. Maintain opsec on Minato seals.
    • Talk to Noburi:
      • Kagome finished MS7. Minato thought it might be useful for mednin, take a look?
      • Task Noburi with learning to open Tenketsu without permanently damaging the chakra system or causing undue pain

Not opposed to voting for this but I think talking to Kagome about necromancy and not including discussing A-Day & alternatives is a waste, we should get his thoughts on the operation itself, not just the Sealing to get the rift open.

I'll try and give specific edits soon

Add 5SB to the seal stuff and you have my vote. Really time we learned it

Talking Rift seals with Kagome is a big improvement to the plan I wrote, thanks!

I'm surprised that you cut discussing Minato's poetry with Naruto. This seems like a really fun scene, I bet it'd be fun to write, and it helps us set up for recruiting Naruto. why did you cut it?

The Nobouri section is better explained than I wrote, thank you. I didn't include discussing MS7 because I want all of Nobouri's effort to go into Tenketsu research. I'm already worried that his research speed will be the bottleneck on our preparation.

An even better version of the Nobouri bit might look like:
  • Task Noburi with learning to dilate and then re-contract Naruto's Tenketsu without permanently damaging the chakra system. Don't tell Naruto unless necessary for research.
Perticular note, he needs to return the tenketsu to normal before Naruto dies, and letting him know it's for Naruto might be useful, Naruto's chakra system is at least a little weird.

EDIT: also, why no Sasori? he'd be genuinely useful for 3D sealing, and distracting him is Hazou's responsibility.

Interesting! Not sure it's not just a coincidence though, inasmuch as that's just a fancier variation on "a priest".
True. The only reason I thought it was worth mentioning was because of the association with the Sage and the hierophant's preistly functions. Our only frame of refernece for the power a hierophant wields is from Tama who was empowered not by the Sage but by a kami. We need that power or the Kami that this heirophant worshipped. Unfortunately, we don't have that name.

Now, its a shot in the dark, but we also need to know if the position of Polemarch is as strong or stronger than the heirophant. If the Polemarch is just as capable as the hierophant we have heard about, then Pantsaa should have no problem leading or contributing to the Dragon war. He can even help by blessing Hazou or Kei to wage the dragon war or cursing the Dragons in some way. If he's not, then we should ask if he can point us to the Kami whom Tama worshipped or any lore associated with her and the Kami.

This is definitely grasping at straws, but it would be interesting to see how the Pangolins or other summons react to this inquiry. It seems provocative enough to provoke a reaction at least. Might be something Kei can use. Hopefully it's received as a compliment and lowers his ire.

Disagree: Kagome is an OPSEC clusterfuck, and his expertise is in sealing, not strategy or ops planning.
If you want to consult with someone, why not Mari? She can keep a secret better than Hazou, and is more likely to have usable advice.

Kagome is an OPSEC clusterfuck
I mean, he already knows 90% of the secret? (That we're working on Necromancy). And he spouts such random, unbelievable garbage no one suspects him when he's actually telling something truthful to this reality

his expertise is in sealing, not strategy or ops planning
His specialty is in sealing and security and part of what we need to do is prevent Akatsuki from getting to the Rift before we do, and prevent them from stealing our progress. Also, he knows way more Path lore than Mari does

Fair enough. Specificaly, I'm worried about him blabbing that Nagato is on our shortlist of resurrection candidates, which is probably treason.

I can't really think of any further scenes that can help with Necromancy aside from the Ami meeting
Ask snowflake about Shikamaru's potential recruitment? If we get Shika, we get Asuma and all the resources of Leaf. Including Tsunadae for mednin research and securing the portal, guarantee of Naruto's help, and the ability to handpick our expedition team.
