List sources of substances.
  • Common materials.
  • Collection in preparation of fixing GS.
  • Conclave trade.
  • Borrowed from daimyo collections under Asuma's authority.
Worried about mercury poisoning if testing cinnabar.
I figure the important part of this is that we're trying a lot of things. EJ isn't going to go down a literal list of materials and compare each one against the worldbuilding notes, he's going to consult the worldbuilding notes and ask if anything that works for 3D Sealing is something Hazou might have access to. Keeping it ambiguous like this also gives Hazoupilot freedom to observe basic safety precautions like how to handle potentially-toxic substances. We are taking full safety precautions, after all.
Is silica common knowledge? Think it would help to say where he is pulling it from and what he does to it after he pulls it out.
The line has a link to a breakdown of the chemical composition of granite, listing silica as by far the most common compound. I say silica with the intent of communicating my intent to EJ better, but from Hazou's perspective I'm saying to extract and purify that material that's so common in MEW granite and then see what he can do with it after that. No chemical knowledge required.
Why coal? Do we have a way of knowing it is related to diamond? Maybe better to start with diamond and see what it can be decompressed into.
I, uh, dunno. There's a line about inspecting other gems to try and recreate them, but singling out 'compress carbon into diamond' seems pretty obvious as an intent-marker to me. It's less that Hazou needs to know this specific chemistry fact and more that I'm promoting it specifically to EJ's attention from the set of tests-he's-already-doing in his experiments on gemstones.
Do we do this with premade glass? If not, same as silica. Where does the glass come from and does anything need to be done to it?
Dunno, we made the telescopes with quartz so it's not like we're lacking access to transparent substances. Even if we need to buy some glass, the cost is trivial. Honestly, this line is less an experiment and more "while you're fiddling around with ES, have the idea of ES-crafted window panes". I don't forsee any troublesome snags in the execution.

Even though I disagreed with your suggestions here, thank you for making them! I'm glad you took a critical eye to my plan and looked for ways it might go wrong under particular circumstances.

I have nothing against the plan. But maybe something can be added that Hazou is telling Mari that he is not undergoing another "breakdown" like in Iron or with the "Pressure Hiashi" plan?

I agree that this is often what people think. It's not what I want us to do - see, not co-signing anyone's bullshit. But there's a line between not getting walked on and needlessly destroying your opponent's treasured heirloom.

Sure; again, I'm not suggesting we do anything unless we have our eyes fully open. We can and should live in reality, but we can do that while taking the high road.

Preventing the Hagoromo from being able to impact us at all is not achievable on timescales we're going to find acceptable. Preventing the Hagoromo from being able to appreciably impact us is something I think is best left to Asuma. Presently, he's recognized Hagoromo aggression and censured them by way of levelling an audit. The economic and social impact of a complete audit of their Tower employees is significant.

Actually, @eaglejarl, does Hazo have any perspective as to how big a deal that is? (Pinging you because you wrote that update.)

The point of the quest is that we're acting in line with our morals. Uplift is a moral position. Do you view it as a luxury? What do you view as essential, short of our continued survival and that of our loved ones?

(I'll perhaps preemptively note that there is no evidence it is likelier than not that the Hagoromo had anything to do with the fact that Akane's safety was compromised or to suppose that they will pose such a treat going forward. If continued safety etc. is the only thing you put above our morals, there's no reason to compromise our morals to go after the Hags.)
Morals are a luxury because a system has to be maintained to prop them up, which in most cases is extra work, compared to murder.
It might be possible to eventually convert the Hagoromo clan into worthwhile allies. How much time are prepared to sink into that, while preparing for betrayal? How much time does that leave for actually getting important stuff done? How many of our people are we prepared to see die to the failures of this military dictatorship until that happens?
How much faster would we get to a better society without having to work closely with saboteurs, how many lives could have been spared if we got there earlier, and at what exchange rate are we comparing the lives of innocents against the lives of bad faith actors?

@Inferno Vulpix
We've been doing unfair comparisons because we've been comparing to modern steel.

The very best Japanese swords had somewhat comparable quality, but it took ridiculous effort and skill and was only done for masterwork blades.

Most everyone else had to make do with steel with wildly inconsistent carbon content. In practice this made the steel pretty brittle and prone to fracture.

We could get pretty darn significant quality improvement simply by controlling the carbon percentage and making it uniformly distributed in the metal. It would turn stuff like cast iron into modern grade steel.

From an experimental perspective, this would be Hazo comparing different qualities of steel/iron and trying to turn the low quality stuff into the highest quality stuff.

You could get things cast (typically easy to produce high carbon iron) and then purify it instead of having to forge it.

Maybe he could discover ductile iron too! Ductile iron - Wikipedia

Easy to produce, still easy to cast and probably as good as most ancient steel in many metrics.

Why are we messing with earthshaping instead of working on the afterlife portal...?
Kagome laid out what we needed in plain english right? Naruto's help. Which were not doing any planning on.
my impression was that we might be pretty close to a breakthrough on the Great Seal, and are prioritizing if first. ES 50 might give us 3D sealing, the clan bosses are gathering, Oro is working out 3D sealing theory. seems like things are finally coming together.

I would like to get the ball rolling on Necromancy tasks happening in the background. Kagome is already working on the Opening seal. I'd like to invite Sasori to help with the Great Seal(figuring out a distraction for him is our job), and get Noburi started on figuring out how to open Naruto's Tenketsu to power the portal.

I'd like to recruit Naruto last, minimize the amount of time he has to change his mind and rat us out to Asuma. we could work on prepping him for recruitment(discussing Minato's poetry), or wait on Kei to recruit Shikamaru (as Asuma's second in command, he can probably get us whatever backup we need)

@_The_Bomb I'd really like to get the spice-scent-gathering started, and to point out the timelines/tower leak to Asuma, would you consider adding them? this plan otherwise looks perfect.

Spice-scent-gathering I think is already ongoing but I'll definitely add something to the offscreen section for it.

As for the timeline and Tower leak…. I absolutely agree with you, but that's not something we can thrown in offscreen. Also, I'm not comfortable adding something like that without the thread having time to weigh in on it. You and I may agree, but the others might not. Don't worry, we're meeting with Asuma "tomorrow" in universe to discuss the Hagoromo situation and can/should bring it up then. IFF the other players want to, that is.

Actually…..
I think we should let Noburi make a quick detour.
Why couldn't he do anything for any of them?

Couldn't he?

Slowly, with the utmost caution, Noburi put her hand on Yuno's wrist as she lay curled in the foetal position, holding Satsuko tight. Satsuko never let Noburi carry her, but she did let him guide Yuno's hands to lay her down in her crib next to the bed.

With Yuno partially uncurled, Noburi held her and thought hard.

Hours passed.

He couldn't fix this. He couldn't fix any of this. Even Akane couldn't have done that. But she'd also never have let that stop her–and with Akane gone, somebody had to take up the mantle.
