Also we've already established with Neji that we think summoner business is above clan concerns. We are special because of our shared bond to walk the path
Not "above" but "independent." Neji is loyal to the Hyuuga, and Hazou sidestepped that by making it so that the 7th Path Trade Network wasn't made with "Neji the Hyuuga Clan Ninja," but "Neji the Summoner."

I suspect that if we imply that Summoning business is more important than Clan business, Neji will he severely displeased. "The Clan" is important to Clan Ninja in a way that we don't really understand. Noburi and Yuno made that observation back when we were fighting the Hagoromo, and were planning on seeking a dissenting Hag Ninja to work with.

I think that our approach with the conclave should be to first approach the Pangolins, as the host and so that they do not take offense at us approaching the Condors first, but the Condors should be who we focus our attention on. This is not because I expect to make particular progress with the Condors, but because the Otters, who value pacifism (I assume that's true and that the stuff Faflec found is being retconned? @eaglejarl @Velorien @Paperclipped) should see us making genuine efforts toward the Condors. Give it a few days of that, and then approach the Otters.

In particular, we should invoke and publically reveal our High Concept Aspect: Creative Idealist. Make it clear to everyone that that is what Hazou is. This will open us up to it being used against us -- that doesn't matter, because I think that to bring the Otters on board will require a certain level of willingness to commit our skin to the game.
Are you going to make this a plan or would you like me to write one for you?

[X] Action Plan: Laying the Groundwork
Word Count:TBD
  • Timeline: 5 days
  • Sanity check: Mari, Kei
  • Find a defensible spot to camp well inside the border of Pangolin
    • Set up a camp with camouflaged skyslicers on the perimeter.
    • And MARS paired implosion seals
    • Give each seal-trained Dog a section of the perimeter traps to activate if the camp is attacked
    • Prepare the defenses like Kagome will be inspecting your work for thoroughness.
  • Notify the nearest Pangolin outpost of your presence
    • Just resting on our way to the Conclave
    • If they seem unhappy about it, bribe them
    • If they seem very unhappy about it, play on your kinship with Pangolin Summoner
  • Spend the majority of the days in Leaf
    • Any dogs that want to come are welcome
      • Check in with the Seventh Path throughout the day
    • Work on seal research
      • If Hazou thinks he can get away without using SSA Multithread SCs for Goo Bombs and Macerators 3.0
      • If those are finished, prep a single day for Dragon's Roar to gauge its difficultly and start Rocket Boots (with Kagome's permission and help if possible)
    • Start meeting with the other Leaf Summoners. Priority, Condor, Porcupine, Turtle
      • Ask them if they know anything about their Clan's trade representatives.
      • Ask about their Clan's body language and culture so that Hazou can make a better impression.
      • Ask them to be present at the Conclave to form a united front about the importance of the Crusade.
    • Keep checking in to Arachnid in case Enma arrives.
      • If he does, end the update early.

Updated plan
'Consider' meeting Neji through Hinata? Either do it or don't, unless you're specifically interested in seeing Hazou think about it and not do it, that shouldn't be the words used. May I ask why we're doing it through Hinata? Neji is his own person, and as the wielder of a summon scroll has a substantial amount of political power within the Hyuuga. I don't think it's a snub against Hinata to approach him about it directly
Also we've already established with Neji that we think summoner business is above clan concerns. We are special because of our shared bond to walk the path
Deleted

The Sealing section seems a little sparse on details. What do you want out of Macerators 3.0? I assume better combat efficacy, but how? Increased spread, faster speed, larger storage mass
Will do this later
That seems like a lot to put in a single plan. That's like, 6-7 scenes? Trim it down to what you want to see on screen. We have time, having gotten there early. I'd recommend focusing on getting Neji, Ruri, and the Porcupine summoner on board
Trimmed out the Kei/Noburi scene and the Condor in Pangolin scene. Can't realistically skip visiting Pangolins, camp defenses or Sealing.
So my immediate concern with this plan is that while it's fine it does seem like the sort of thing paper will give low base rate for, since it's mostly prepping to do things rather than doing things. (I could be mistaken, @Paperclipped feel free to share your opinion.) May be worth adding something actionable at the end of all the prep. Or if we're fine with accepting bad base rate for the moment to get a better framework for our approach then perhaps we can just do it anyways.

Edit: missed the bit about talking to the Condors, might be worth expanding on that bit? That seems to meet the criteria I meant
I made it more boring, sorry. We have a shit ton of work to do in the background before we go to the Conclave.
I'm not saying no other Summoners at all, we could arrange to meet them there at the Conclave. I just specifically mean the initial approach. It would definitely be good to have them around though, especially Ruri who is a good diplomat.
Changed wording away from arriving with the other Summoners.

Hi all, new to the quest here. I just found it yesterday morning, and have been binging it since. Right now I am at chapter 213, there's a lot of really good things about this quest and a couple things which really annoyed me. But this is good, because contrasting viewpoints lead to a better overall quest, and everything went the way I like it would be boring.

I really like the originalness of the world, it makes for a much more interesting world, with a lot more depth, than Kishimoto put into it. The whole chakra, beasts, and alien viewpoints of summons, and just wildness of the world is deeply intriguing.
I also really like how most of the characters feel like real people. It's very good to see people react to things and for there to be consequences for actions.

Some of the things that at that chapter point could be improved on, is showing more of the world. What I mean by that is this is explicitly, a death, world, with chakra beasts, holes to the outside, the world itself, mutating animals and people. This really needs to be shown more, and become a larger part of the story, it was going well until the crew joined leaf and then we took a hard left in the political intrigue. I'm not saying the political intrigue is an interesting, but this was supposed to be billed as a death world I would expect to see more of that.
The second thing that bothers me a bit, and this is a personal one, is how the main characters (Hazō, Kieko) come off as incredibly autistic. This might just be a personal thing, but I have met and worked with a lot of people who have autism, and they are even more emotionally aware than these two. It honestly gets annoying reading them, I fully expect it gets better in later chapters, but for now is getting a bit painful to read.

Either way, I am very much enjoying this quest, and I know I've got a lot more to read. I'll check back in when I've read more. Please forgive me if I'm covering something that has already been covered. So far, I've just been reading the story posts.

Would someone mind checking my understanding of the current situation?

Now that we have arrived in Pangolin, we finally have some free time with our PC. The Conclave doesn't really start happening until Enma arrives, which is over a month away. To lay the groundwork for that, Enma wants Hazō to start talking to the trade representatives currently at the conference so that they are convinced of the dangers of the Dragons and express such to their movers-and-shakers when they show up.

Mari suggests we save the shock and awe of the big Dragon 'reveal' until about two weeks before Enma the higher ranking representatives show up, so for the next few weeks(?) we are limited to gathering info on the current representatives, finding out which ones are most influential, building rapport, and interfacing with Konoha's other summoners to act as a block.

Fortunately, this doesn't take more than a couple hours of our personal attention per day. With our remaining time, we can either work on new projects that would help with the Conclave or work on our backlog (which seems to be the preferred option for the moment).

In our currently backlog, there are around four projects that seem to be the best choices to work on:
  • Setting up the Gōketsu Estate: The earlier started, the better. A lot of decisions need to be made before construction on the permanent estate can begin, especially if it's going to incorporate novel facilities like sewers. Improving the conditions of the temporary housing for the civilians is also a must. Once the high level plans and decisions are made, implementation can happen much faster in the background. At this point, I'd advise Hazō focus on other projects with some occasional ES usage (such as Jiraiya's Statue) and delegate overall implementation to Gaku.
  • Improving Gōketsu's Combat Seals using Hazō's now much higher Sealing Stat: Hazō's sealing stat is now much higher than it was when we researched the Macerator, Rocket Boots, etc. Spending a month or two researching improved variants would likely give Gōketsu a slightly but permanent boost to their combat buffs. There's no immediate catastrophe coming up, but combat is a fact of life for ninja and there's always a chance one of our ninja could end up on a mission and have a slight difference matter. Perhaps not the most time pressing, but very cool and definitely has to happen at some point! Why not now?
  • Performing Maintenance and Research on the Great Seal: In addition to the usual work we do delaying the apocalypse, perhaps we should amp up our research efforts and try to learn something that makes convincing the others at the Conclave easier. Plus, it's always a good idea to try and figure out how to stop the Great Seal from destroying all of reality. At the very least, we can gather all the information we have and update Konoha's other sealers. And, while we're at it, maybe give the Tower an updated dossier on everything we know on the Dragons. Asuma didn't seem to realize the implications of Ruri seeing the b̸͔̥͕̻̰̮̺͈͕̋̈́̏͂͂́̐̆͘ẽ̸̡̢̤̻̩̆̾̐̈́͊͠ä̸̢̧̡̨̜͔̼͍̲́͗̕u̷̱̠͌̒̏̂̎̆ẗ̴͈̲̩̹̳̞̣́̂̋́̒́͜͝͠ͅȋ̶̢̭̱͙̿̈̋f̷̖̼͗̌̋̐u̵̥̦͖͍͎͇͕̮̯̾̾͋́̉̃͋̏͠ḽ̶̛͍̹̲̼̻̹͙̣̾̂̌̉̂̏̏̅̚ dragon, which is more than a little worrying.
  • Learning Jiraiya's Seals that we currently reply on Kagome For: I mean, who doesn't want to make our own Goo Bombs? Not particularly urgent, but has to happen eventually. May take a while unless we deliberately use less prep days, which may also result in Kagome strangling us.

Caught up again. I don't post or vote often, but I wanted to say-- EJ, Velorien, you consistently make me like and empathize with your characters in such a visceral way that I delay reading a chapter for a few weeks because I'm afraid of bad stuff happening to one of them. Good work, and thanks for running this quest!

:> You are most welcome, and thank you for saying so.

You binged 213 chapters in ~36 hours? Dayum. Impressive.

Thank you. The "consequences [good or bad] for choices" thing has been the best part of the quest for me. The players have had huge victories and they are sweeter for having been earned.

Some of the things that at that chapter point could be improved on, is showing more of the world. What I mean by that is this is explicitly, a death, world, with chakra beasts, holes to the outside, the world itself, mutating animals and people. Yeah, it would be fun to explore the world more. If this were a novel then we definitely would, but it's a quest and therefore the players have control over where the camera goes, barring the occasional interlude. If you want to join in the voting and convince people to go missing-nin again and wander the world, that would be amazing. That section of the quest was much easier and more relaxing to write than all the politics and economics stuff.

The second thing that bothers me a bit, and this is a personal one, is how the main characters (Hazō, Kieko) come off as incredibly autistic. I'm glad the characterization didn't ruin your enjoyment of the story. I'd like to think that the kids all get more socially skilled as time goes on, but you'll need to decide for yourself.

Feel free to drop reaction posts or ask questions as you go. We're delighted to engage.

Otter Rats -- Fairly dedicated pacifists and friends of the Condors.
Rats Otters -- Didn't engage much except to make sure there were no alliances formed against them.
The Otters Rats could be a lynchpin -- they're broadly agreed to be reasonable and respected. If Hazou can sway them, many will pay a lot of attention to that.
The Rats Otters and Capybara are largely here for fear of being cut out of potential (esp. military) alliances. Hazou could try to play on that fear, but he'll need to be delicate to avoid alienating them.

So you said to switch the Rats and Otters descriptions, is this the newly accurate info, or is it only the bottom two or something? I'm not sure the Rats were very pacifist when they were previously described...

I don't agree with your conclusion here - I think working on projects that would help with the Conclave makes the most sense by far right now. The Conclave going well is one of the most important goals we can focus on at the moment. I'm also not sure there's much of a project backlog outside of Sealing, moreso a lot of things happening in the background.

Setting up the Gōketsu Estate:
We have ponwog that hazoupilot/Mari/Gaku can handle this. Hazou is not really needed for anything but to sign off on decisions. Everyone is housed, I think we can leave this one be. I wouldn't mind getting another glimpse of the new estate in an upcoming chapter but I don't really want to do it in the middle of the arc personally.

Performing Maintenance and Research on the Great Seal:
We tried bumping this plot thread already after Hazou's Sealing score hit 70. There's nothing to do in this department until we get 3D sealing more or less. ES 50 is over a month out still so I'm not sure we could make anything happen before the Conclave is truly underway.

Improving Gōketsu's Combat Seals using Hazō's now much higher Sealing Stat:
I'm fine with this as it directly contributes to Conclave success.

Learning Jiraiya's Seals that we currently reply on Kagome For:
This is... kind of the same as the previous entry imo, but sure. My caveat is that for the moment Hazou should only be learning the ones where it is actually a direct upgrade if he does it. For example Kagome's Sealing level may not be 60, while Hazou's is over 60. If so, Hazou's goo bomb TN will be 60 and more than Kagome's. But I'm not worried about Hazou learning 150 dB Banshees while Kagome can make them for the same bonus. Hazou should eventually learn it but it's not immediately pressing imo.

One other thing we may want to do besides mingle at the Conclave itself is return to Archaeopteryx for more Dragon parts. Snuncle graciously volunteered for us to give him all of our Dragon parts so we kinda need more if we want to show any off to the Conclave, and the Condors told us Dragons were killed all over the Archaeopteryx island and their bodies tossed into the sea, so the beaches/scattered islands may have parts, as well as the nearby shallows. Good thing Hazou is from Mist and a good swimmer... and has shadow clone. The Arachnids are also good swimmers too so they can help.

It's a journey of a couple days to Archaeopteryx each way. When do you want to do this?

EDIT: Just had an idea, maybe Enma wants to help us look for them.

The sooner the better, probably. We only need to travel to the Island though. From there we can just warp to the Conclave.
We can't leave the Seventh Path while we do this, so the Dogs will be without escort in Pangolin.

Also we'd only get a single chance, and we'd need to burn multiple days on the attempt. If we make SCs to help Hazou search, he'll be chakra depleted in enemy territory, and finally Hazou isn't strong enough to move a Dragon corpse by himself.

It seems like a risky play with little chance of paying off to me. There's no guarantee we'd even find a Dragon corpse, and Hazou is virtually certain of encountering gthss Archaeopteryx on the island. If we have substantial Arachnid escort to help search, retrive, and fight. It might be worth it.

Word Count: 295
  • Optimize with Mari/Kei/Noburi
  • Arrival in Pangolin
    • Find defensible campsite well inside Pangolin. Notify Kei/Noburi of location for later meetup.
      • Notify nearest Pangolin patrol of your presence, ensure Dog camp isn't harassed.
        • Hazou's here as Enma requested, recuperating from travel before attending the Conclave.
        • Leverage pangolin summoner connection if necessary.
      • Set up perimeter defenses, skyslicers, ARS triggers for Dogs, use jutsu to burrow defenses, work out guard shifts.
    • Spend daytime in Leaf SC training/researching. Spend evenings in 7th Path.
  • Conclave prep
    • Complete research.
    • Ask Leaf summoners about their respective Summons' body language/culture, discuss diplomatic approaches
    • Meet with Neji, Aika, Ruri, Asuma individually, request their presence for Hazou's arrival, portray united front.
      • Ruri persuades Neji if Hazou fails?
    • Practice storytelling with Canaria to recount Dragon stories.
    • Ask Kagome/Arachnids to search Archaeopteryx for Dragon parts to show Conclave, bring Enma if possible.
    • Could Enma bring Arachnids (mites?) to Conclave?
  • Conclave Arrival
    • Arrive a week after Enma leaves Arachnid.
    • Arrive as trio with Kei and Noburi. Evoke Jiraiya's/Sannin legacy where possible as Enma recommended.
    • Present to Pangolins first, thank them for graciously hosting alliance against the Dragon threat.
      • Bring Driver Ants as tribute.
    • Present self to Condors second. Mention how Kumokogo was awed by Conjura's legend, hoping to work with her in particular against the threat.
      • Provide tribute (ask Ruri for advice)
    • Make further introductions in order recommended by advisors.
      • Provide tributes suggested by advisors
    • Don't escalate conflicts, but be ready to throw down and nonlethally neutralize aggressors.
    • Make more comfortable arrangements for Horizon Chasers.

I mean if Enma is dropping by we should just get him to come with us imo, he'd easily be able to keep us safe and look.

I'm not looking to retrieve an entire body but rather bits knocked off as they were attacked by armies of Archaeopteryx and repeatedly smashed into the ground by the Boss

Nonlethally neutralize any attackers where necessary, but avoid conflict if possible.
I would change this to "Do not escalate conflicts, but be ready to throw down and nonlethally neutralize aggressors."

I'm concerned that if we act to "avoid conflict" we'll be seen as weak and unworthy of everyone's attention etc. etc.. I think this gets the point across (if they insult us, we insult them; if they attack, we beat them up; we do not escalate past what they throw at us).

The plan doesn't specify a timespan or a date for when to proceed to the Conclave. That's kind of important

We go to the Conclave when the Conclave prep is completed. I don't know how long that will take but all that matters is that it's accomplished first.
