[X] Winning the Contest
Word Count: 291

Check with Mari to prevent treason. Keep your head down until the contest is done.
  • Make it easy for Kagome to continue decoding Jiraiya's notes.
  • Clear land.
    • Buy low quality land near Leaf.
    • Offer Pangolins (or other summons) combat training in clearing all chakra beasts from the area.
    • Clear off vegetation and put up walls, and submit it afterwards (as well as the method).
    • Get the Nara to do an analysis for us on how much this improves productivity, prosperity, ninja rates in the future, etc.
  • Find someone who isn't part of a collective
    • Ask them to submit on our behalf. Reasons why: public acknowledgement (good PR), goodwill from us, favored trading, money, etc.
  • With Kagome's approval, submit Stacked Implosion Seals.
    • Note that more than 10 is a Bad Idea.
  • Can we hire Technique Hackers?
    • MEW variants - other materials (valuable types of rock?), or build-a-house technique.
  • Ask Keiko about negotiating with the Pangolins.
    • We can offer combat training and food through chakra beast clearing.
    • If they won't offer their own techniques, how about the Condors'?
  • How are chakra metal deposits identified?
    • Hire missions to confirm the deposits in Swamp and (if non-treasonous) O'uzu.
    • If confirmed, start making any preparations we can for extraction.
  • Talk to Haru and ask if he has jutsu he's willing to submit.
    • No hard feelings for earlier, by the way.
  • 5SB building foundations to prevent cave-ins. Submit proposal and test results (use Tunnel Excavation)
  • Continue skyslider research
    • Build small models and scale up.
    • Get more lift with larger wings (bigger kites pull more)
    • Adjust variables to stop tipping. Maybe wing angle relates to rolling?
    • No human tests without Kagome-tier safety.
  • Can Jiraiya's Daybright seals grow plants?
    • Does additional sunlight increase yield?
    • Can we extend viable growing periods?

Very glad to change things out to maximize chances of winning the contest. I'd rather not submit the Porcupine Scroll if we haven't already because of the birds and the bushes, but will do so if people think it's a good idea.

Hey so in the rules doc summons don't get xp in the human path, making all training here near worthless. I'm not sure why that idea gets tossed around so much.

A fun side activity:

"ANBU-san, come, sit. Have a drink. It'd be rude invite guests without at least offering them tea, as I've been told."

I would like to signal my support for all plans that spend the next couple days in character chilling out (preferably for this update and the next).

I argue this is a good idea from both a game and narrative perspective:

1) Man this arc was stressful. We almost died 3-5 times!
2) Our background projects can mostly tick on without us, as they have been doing.
3) Anything we do at this point is running up the score.
4) I feel like some narrative catharsis + catching up + steam release (its a shame Mei is dead) + character bonding is due.
5) The characters themselves in the sim could use some de-stressing (a couple tons of that and some willowbark tea pls).
6) Gotta spend another day or two healing up those injuries.
Alright, that's a good point.

[x] Action Plan: Tending Your Garden

Have lunch with Kagome and Honoka, subtly check on Honoka's current apparent wellness.
May want to put a subsection underneath this saying something along the lines of 'check with the mednin we have monitoring her'

Hazō isn't exactly an expert in medicine. There's nothing wrong with checking ourselves just because, but if we actually want to know how she's doing we should ask the medic nin.

How does this look?

[x] Action Plan: Tending Your Garden
Words: 173

  • Check on Noburi, have we given him a heart attack yet?
  • Thank Haru for sticking his neck out on the line for us
  • Clear the air with Akane about the Out Incident, ask her about that one thing she wanted to tell/ask us.
  • Visit Shikamaru, thank him sheepishly, ask if he'd like to go cloud watching sometime?
  • Check on Honoka's current wellness with her acting medic nin.
    • Then have lunch with Kagome and Honoka and subtly check on her mental/physical health
  • Tea with Mari, talk about our lingering feelings for Akane and how we're unsure how to resolve them.
  • Catch up with Keiko, we missed her dearly
  • Genuinely thank Ami using CCnJ and that while we don't fully understand her, we value her as a person.
    • If she's skeptical, list what we do know about her using CCnJ and that we accept her as she is.
  • Send a letter to Tsunade, asking for recommendations about Honoka's situation
  • Check with our secretary to see how things went while we were... otherwise occupied.

[x] Action Plan: Tending Your Garden

There is presumably some sort of party planned for our return, so I think it would be a good idea for us to have something in the plan for that. Insofar as stuff for that goes: I'm partial to a lot of the stuff in the other plan, and I'm sure @Noumero wouldn't mind terribly if you cannibalize subsets of it.

Itachi claimed Akatsuki could destroy all the remaining villages. And Itachi and Hidan seem psychologically unstable and a murderhobo respectively. Don't want to leave that as a loose end for too long.

I was actually just thinking about time-skipping to the next morning, really. Of course, I'm presuming that it's late afternoon, early evening right now. But the actual party strikes me as a little boring to write/read. Standard "woo, we're not dead" dialogue with some jokes thrown Hazou's way and maybe a touch of exasperation held at bay by the relief of not being dead. It might be peaceful, but it strikes me as a little boring, whereas if we timeskip to tomorrow, we can get wholesome peace while getting some meaningful interaction done.

But that said, I'll add it to the list if that's what the hivemind wants. What sounds good for an addition (other than the obvious "thanks for not letting me die!!!" coupled with a deep bow) along those lines?
Edit: not being petty or passive aggressive! Just trying to communicate my thoughts and willingness to compromise! I should probably get to bed soon, to be honest. I'm dead on my feet right now.

You know, I'm starting to imagine that Ami is rather unhappy with us, since the mechanics of our contacting Akatsuki would have actually brought Keiko in on the treason, and Asuma would have to execute her as well.

Eh she didn't say that we owe her a favour and she could argue we do. So she is at least entertained enough.

Unrelated:

One Sarutobi assassinated Danzou Shimura on his compound.

Another Sarutobi will assassinate Goketsu Hazou on the same compound.

It's like poetry, it rhymes. Beautiful.

There is nothing we can do about that. It isn't so much a loose end as a cord whipping around doing whatever it feels like.

My understanding is that the scroll was given to Asuma, no strings attached, as part of the Gōketsu contribution to the contest. @Velorien can correct me if I misunderstood/misremembered our discussions. If he doesn't, assume that I remember correctly and that yes, you handed it in.

I have to disagree with that interpretation,

Summoning Scroll: We found it!
  • Should we turn it in to help smooth things over?

"Hazou turns it in to save his/Goketsu's life" makes sense, but that's not a no strings attached thing. Also the plan was to run this argument by Mari not make a decision ourselves. So we didn't really vote for this, some players thought we need to give it to him while others didn't.

Obviously just my opinion on things, but why wouldn't we or Hazou keep it if Asuma wouldn't force it from Goketsu? Even if Hazou get's executed Akane or Haru could use it.

Because he was trying to show Asuma that Hazō was a loyal Leaf ninja who should not be executed. I understand that you disagree with our interpretation, but it is what happened.

[x] Action Plan: The Third Time in Hazou's Entire Life When He is Allowed to Relax

While no one would have voted for it, I'd have preferred the party kill Haru instead of confessing treason. It'd be very easy to cover up, and Haru is an acceptable loss in my opinion. He isn't a power multiplier like a technique hacker or sealmaster would be, he's a melee specialist with personality issues.

Faced with Hazo's execution as the alternative, I'm fairly confident the rest of the party would reluctantly agree to it as well. "Haru was eaten by a giant snake. It was unfortunate, but the snake is dead."

Well, we've lost the clan support contest. No reason not to run up the score a much as possible though. (Alternately we won it, and our prize was not being murdered.)

We probably won it with the scroll. Asuma is most likely going to publically announce each clan's submissions, since the contest was held to strengthen Leaf as a whole, and many contributions will be distributed to the whole of Leaf. If winners were announced without showing contributions, clans could argue they deserved to win and try to argue results, and clans could announce what they submitted on their own anyways.

Politically speaking, Asuma could have the Goketsu lose the contest even if they are clear winners in terms of submissions, but that'd look bad for him on several levels. Of course, if we simply lost the contest then that's a shame.

Thence we all parted ways to play our individual parts in Operation Forestall the Inevitable (unofficial name).

Petition to rename this quest to "Forestall the Inevitable: Death by Treason - A Rational Naruto Quest".

---

By the way, the section about Haru in the action plans strike me as coming off as somewhat fake. Like in a "Hey, I know you are partly responsible for me nearly getting executed but don't worry, that's what I like about you. Keep up the good work. Sincerely. Also the cake is yummy and definitely not poisoned so eat up." way.

It'd be seriously out of character for Haru not to think that Hazou is full of shit for forgiving him so easily. Even if what he did was what a person loyal to Leaf should have done.

But hey, maybe I am misjudging Haru "I will interpret everything you say in the worst possible way" Goketsu.

I'm gonna have to second this. We need to have a serious conversation with Haru, have Mari work on him, or have a "Hey, talk later" thing with the intent of a serious conversation later.

Haru is an acceptable loss in my opinion.
[...]
I'm fairly confident the rest of the party would reluctantly agree to it as well.

I disagree. The hardest pushback we have ever received from the team on any topic was when we proposed working with Orochimaru, and I think that cold-blooded murder of a team-mate (a family member) for the sake of pushing our own agenda would be viewed by them in exactly the same light.

I think the team would agree for exactly as long as it took to get back to Leaf, and have ANBU arrest us. Likely they would choose to believe that our behaviour was due to Out-corruption, because that is more palatable than admitting that we are just that ruthless, but in any case, I do not think that they would let that stand in any circumstance. Not after Oro, not after Minami, not after Sunset Racer.

It occurs to me that Itachi really might have put a genjutsu on us, and that it was just written out to make sure that we see, narratively, just how powerful the Sharingan can be. The QMs might've been like "oh, I have an idea on how to use that player action to further the plot!" Which is more than okay, in my honest opinion.

And how would Keiko publicly treat a Hazou that had been almost doomed via genjutsu? Gently, supportively, but otherwise normally. But Keiko was unusually... expressive. I suppose that could be chalked up to facing a near-death experience and being glad to see us, but it could also be a side effect of Keiko simply not being all that good at lying (to Hazou, or in general). Ami is Ami and we could never tell, I don't think. So... just in case?

  • Using handsigns, subtly check with Mari to see if we actually sent the letter, or if that really was Itachi's genjutsu
  • Check on Noburi, how's he holding up?
  • Thank Haru for sticking his neck out on the line for us.
  • Clear the air with Akane about the Out Incident, ask her about that one thing she wanted to tell/ask us.
  • Visit Shikamaru, thank him sheepishly, ask if he'd like to go cloud watching sometime?
