I'm willing to add in a section, but my poor skills at writing social-based communications leads me to worrying that I'll phrase it poorly. More specifically, I'm worried that since the Snake Clan doesn't really know us (IIRC we've had zero communications with them up 'till now) they'll go "who the fuck are you and why should we make you our Summoner?" and otherwise take insult. I'd really appreciate help writing this.
I'd just say something like our father and Orchimaru both feel in battle together. We wish to pay our respects to there allies who fought with them at the battle on Nagi island

I feel like making contact with the Snake clan should be next update stuff. We don't even know that Orochimaru is dead yet, and our first contact with the Snakes is likely to contain a lot to work through. We also can't afford to skimp on detail and get off on the wrong foot.

Given that it's a 'next plan' sort of thing, though, I'd be willing to add it to the Plan Cache. Is that okay?

Also agree on leaving the Naruto hat question out for now. This isn't the only time we'll get to see him, and the question isn't relevant until he's out of the hospital. Best to focus on making a good first impression.

The dude's probably doesn't even know Jiraiya's dead, let alone the fact that the Sandaime died, Jiraiya took over, and started his own clan.
To be fair, "bring him up to speed" is doing a lot of work in the plan; it's also like, the number one or two most important question we're asking him.

I'm personally starting to wonder if we should even pop the "do you want the Hat" question, at least right now.
I would prefer that we don't do this at the moment. Racking brain on something to replace it with, but in general I think popping that question is going to be really awkward.

Removed asking Naruto about the hat, and asked him if he wanted other visitors (like his team). Pretty rough draft ATM so I am up for changes.
[X] Action Plan: Gathering Allies

Word Count: 391
  • Check and follow Jiraiya's will and answers for instructions on this situation.
  • Meetings (optimize with the clan):
    • Tsunade:
      • Guidelines:
        • Be firm, but respectful: This concerns the future of the clan you're responsible for. Don't be aggressive, but don't let her intimidate or dismiss you.
        • Be serious and direct: You can't manipulate her, and she hates wasting time.
        • Show measured sympathy: Tsunade just lost her lifelong teammates.
          • Don't overdo it, though: she'll hate being coddled.
      • Discussion:
        • Deliver Jiraiya's message. Offer condolences.
        • Naruto: We plan to adopt him, as Jiraiya wanted. Can we visit him?
        • Show her the broadsheet.
        • Hokageship:
          • Hiashi's (?) broadsheet suggests he's planning a war with Rock and Cloud...immediately after we suffered heavy losses. The war may well destroy us. Even if Leaf wins, it will compound the damage Akatsuki inflicted, crippling the village system for generations.
          • If we instead capitalize on the facts that all major villages fought against a common foe, and that only together we could oppose them again, we could attempt to build a lasting peace.
          • For that, is she willing to make a bid for the hat? She's our best chance against Hiashi.
          • (gallows humor) At worst, she'll only suffer for a few years, until Naruto takes over.
          • Also: Young clanless ninja seem to believe it's illegal for "mudfeet" to become mednin. She's fine with it?
            • If this provokes her, stand your ground.
          • If she's unwilling, who should we support?
      • Thank her for her time. You'll always welcome her advice; we'll need it.
    • Naruto (IFF he's functional):
      • Guidelines: Genuine and supportive. We want to build a relationship with our (potential) brother.
      • Introduce yourselves.
      • Bring him up to speed, and offer our condolences.
        • If Jiraiya left him anything, pass it on now.
      • "Jiraiya wanted us to adopt you. But it's your choice: we'll support either decision."
      • Is there anyone you'd like to come visit you (e.g., your team)?
        • Get Tsunade's (or the charge nurse's) permission, then arrange for it.
        • Don't speak with Sasuke face-to-face.
  • Ask questions:
    • Mari:
      • Clan heads' rights and duties.
      • How clan secrets work.
      • Other clan heads and their political leanings.
    • Kagome: Is he willing to teach more apprentices?
  • Investigate:
    • Adoption targets: Nakano's group, Lee, clanless jounin like Kabuto.
    • The broadsheet:
      • Who printed it? The Nara should know.
      • Gauge public sentiment towards other villages (visit bars, newscenters, hospitals).
      • Ask Minori what really happened?

Reading the bloodline talks, I know he'd be smarter about presentation than this, but I find the concept weirdly appealing.

"The equality of civilian and ninja is, fundementally, untenable. When one part of the population can weild chakra and the other cannot that part will dominate the other. At best elements of the more powerful party will collaborate to ensure reasonable treatment of the weaker as in Konoha but this can only endure in the long term to the degree that it benefits the rulers who do over those who do not. However what if we could share the benefits of chakra with the rest of humanity? The moral and practical complications of forced ninja breeding are well known, and could only apply more so to valuable bloodline clans. A wiser course would be pursuing the factors which first led to the evolution of ninja. Looking to the chakra beasts we know whatever the superstition may be the development of chakra-weilding species from incapable species is a natural occurance, one that could be replicated among the civilian population with fine enough understanding of methods.

There were early failures, and many later partial successes that I had to euthenize, but I hope you can see the scale of the outcome to which I'm working. Subject Tenzou here was just a peasant babe with no more chakra than an average baker, but look at him now. If we can replicate this procedure we could uplift all of Konoha, every civilian in the world if that is your wish. The military benefits of a breeding programme without the costs, and allowing the distribution of bloodlines like the Mokuton. However there are many social benefits beyond chakra useage that are just as or more important to explore. The Senju and Uzumaki's life extension and health for obvious reasons, the Sharingan's photographic memory and the Kurasawa's muscle memory for skill acquisition and the whatever intelligence adaptations may be present in the Nara or Mori bloodlines could all contribute to raising the quality and security of life.

Unfortunately Danzo wasn't able to acquire the type and number of subjects I would need for the project to proceed so I bring this proposal to you. Together we can achieve your dreams of one human family without the bloodshed of another Great War!

...

It's alright to cry sensei, this is a beautiful moment. A new beginning for all our family."

Minori is assuming that we know her or could get ahold of her. We could always ask Tsunade for the full story or point out the bullshit.

  • "Jiraiya wanted us to adopt you. But it's your choice: we'll support either decision."
    • Briefly outline what we could offer him--as Keiko mentioned earlier, but in Hazou's words.
    • Besides that, a bunch of quirky individuals that come together to form a loving family. Jiraiya said you'd fit right in.
    • Anyway, its your decision. Take your time.
@faflec ?

Now that you mention it, wouldn't asking the Snakes be a valid way to figure out whether Oro is dead or not? I imagine there being some sort of noticable feedback/change on their side when the active summoner dies.
We don't even know if Orochimaru went on the mission. For all we know he's still in the Leaf black box Jiraiya stashed him in.

...to be clear, I'm using 'we' to refer to Hazou.

Without evidence of Jiraiya directly mentioning anything like that? "You'll fit right in."

It's information, but it's not 100% solid:
  • If Orochimaru died and was resurrected by Pein, that might have disrupted the connection. Thus the snakes might honestly say they lost their summoner while unbeknownst to them Orochimaru is still alive somewhere.
  • The Snakes might just lie to us. I mean, what reason do they have to answer honestly? Orochimaru could've asked them to lie their scales off if anyone inquires about him, and for all we know they just like misleading people. So either answer we get is disrupted somewhat by the odds the Snakes are telling the truth.
If the Snakes say he's still alive, that might mean he survived. If the Snakes say he's dead, that might mean he's dead. It's better than nothing, but a far cry from definitive.

When in doubt, you can always add a "Hazou realizes:" kind of section to the Naruto conversation. That Naruto must be confused, not completely informed of all the events, grieving for Jiraiya and Hiruzen, and so forth. Hazou is quite empathetic, just a bit dense and in need of guidance.

In fact, I wouldn't mind cutting down the content of the conversation to a minimum and just leaving some emotional foci. We don't so much need to convince Naruto of anything, as get to know him better and make a good impression. I think Hazou will do a good job of it on his own, mostly.

pls halp i am of the dumb

@faflec, please add asking Naruto about the Hat back. Not asking the question is making the mistake where in order to achieve a better tactical objective we end up failing the operational goals of the conversation. Right now, what we want from Naruto is answers to:
  1. Goketsu adoption?
  2. What are you going to do about the Hat?
My impression is that we're pushing asking off the second question to ensure that our first contact goes more smoothly; however, by failing to attempt one of our goals in order to make the rest of the conversation smoother we're failing one of our objectives outright. We don't want to do that, because the more we push off asking Naruto, the other big candidate for Hokage, the worse position we're going to be when Hiashi recovers and begins playing the game in earnest.

We also want to ensure a good relationship with him, and I worry that pushing him too hard with all this shit is gonna BSOD him. Like seriously, the guy watched his probably-grandfather figure die, then he gets tortured by Itachi, then he wakes up here, months later, and someone ups and tells him that his father figure and a whole fuckton of Leaf's elite got slaughtered getting him back? That's going to hurt, a lot. Honestly, he might BSOD and we won't be able to ask him anyway.

If you have a way to ease him into being willing to ask about the Hat, I'm all ears.

This is an iterated environment - there is going to be more than one meeting and more than one chance to ask him - so this does not constitute a failure of the second objective. Rather, we're optimizing the first objective and preparing for the second objective.

The question of whether Naruto intends to make a play for the Hat only really becomes relevant after Naruto leaves the hospital, so we can afford to ask the question during a second hospital visit or a meeting directly after he's let out.

Get Tsunade's permission to ask him about the hat.

@faflec, please add asking Naruto about the Hat back.
The dude has been in a coma for a few months and is going to wake up to find out that his Everything died, after being hit with the psychic baseball bat for all of that time.

If we --the players-- want the character Naruto to do literally anything for us, jumping straight to talking shop is probably a bad idea. Let's just find some common ground here and let Hazou do his thing.

He's also a ninja. I'm giving it 50/50 odds that he's out of bed and semifunctional already, but being kept in by doctors who want to be sure that things won't go wrong.

Oh, and of course he could be up and vowing revenge in a technically-functional-but-deeply-unhealthy manner.
