Didn't Shin said that Hazō was taught by his mom to say no and that was another betrayal?

So I am not quite certain about the whole convince Hazō about the Kurosawa not being so bad.

@MMKII We did invite Shin to Byakuren's Cookbook, right? This plan and the last winning plan didn't mention the place specifically...

If we haven't than this part could go hillariously wrong

  • Minor flexing: casually name-drop Ami for the regulars' menu. Mention your promotion, ask about his.

Even more amusing it will be if it will work out in different restaurant

I'm not personally concerned with if the Kurosawa where justified in any way with there treatment of Hana. What I am interested in is that they are a potentially an incredible tool that can be exploited to help further our goals. Hazō has a relationship with them that he can exploit.

Though I can think of no better revenge than remaking the Kurosawa clan in his own image

Goddamnit.

Hows that?

(Needed to take out "Distant opportunity to convince us the Kurosawa aren't losers etc." but ah well).

I think we can cut some of the fluff here if we need anything extra?

[X] Action Plan: Shins and Spynetworks
  • Sanity check this plan with Keiko, Noburi and Jiraiya.
    • Noburi:
      • Are your sisters coming?
    • Jiraiya:
      • Kagome mentioned Akatsuki has a book. Ring any bells?
    • Everyone:
      • Game night: Hash out organizational details, contingencies for de-escalating conflicts, and brainstorm ways to make it interesting/challenging/fun. Assume Ami is ~8 Hazou's worth of munchkin.
      • Maybe... invite all the Kage? This could be our only chance for an international gaming night of this scale...
  • Invite Shin to lunch at Byakuren's Cookbook( if not already done).
  • Morning:
    • Shop!
    • Network:
      • Approach merchants, craftsmen, and book collectors. Look for performers/musicians around taverns.
        • Collectors: discreetly ask about rare books (look for the Akatsuki book: its possibly banned, or doesn't mention them by name).
      • Present a "joint business venture with our clan" to draft them into our Intel Network.
      • Offer writs of patronage, price guarantees, partial financial backing, etc.
      • Direct interested parties to our compound in Leaf. Timetable: arrive within two months.
      • Guidelines:
        • Prioritize those we've approached previously: Glassblowers, salt/spice merchants, brewers, and any others.
        • Work out a bad/good cop negotiation routine with Noburi and/or Keiko. You and Noburi can use it on new/wary targets.
        • Goal: 24 merchants, 3-4 bards, 1-2 performing troupes.
  • Lunch with Shin.
    • Guidelines:
      • Observe OPSEC, stay alert, avoid hard commitments.
      • Be confident. Shin isn't a jounin.
      • He is a silver-tongued viper. Keep your cool. Respond to taunts/manipulations with dry amusement.
    • Start the interaction amicably.
      • Minor flexing: casually name-drop Ami for the regulars' menu. Mention your promotion, ask about his.
    • Elaborate on your offer/intentions:
      • Cooperation was our motto all exam. We're here to build bridges.
      • We're also offering an enormous boost to his career here.
      • (As a callback, order a bottle of Kurohige's Revenge and glasses (shallow pours, save the rest).)
    • Invite him to game night.

One thing Hazou should absolutely do before leaving is grill his mother on his father. He's a complete unknown, there is no other source, and he may never get another chance.

Of course.
But how Hazou lives that is pretty important.
"The Kurosawa are a tool" is different from "I hate the Kurosawa, but i'll use them" that is different from "I love the Kurosawa, but i'll make them in my image, using them".
Regardless, we don't want Hazou to become an Ami or a Jiraya, someone whose normal state of mind is "people are pawn", we already have problem with agency, and the last is far worse in this situation than other.

So...no Zabuza?Or it's implied that Ren will bring one of the heroes of Mist with her?
To be fair, he has intel on the Skywalker, so we want him as far as possible from the other Kages, Ren is a social Jounin, but Zabuza....the less he talks with other Kages/Jonins at the table the better.

So, just putting some things together here.

  • There was some OOC lore post a while ago stating that Tea was ruled by one big clan who had the Capybara scroll.
  • Said Capybara scroll was stolen (presumably) and put up for sale. Something something Condor summoner.
  • Tea is the country that Hidden Mountain is in.
This would imply to me that ninja of Tea are greatly weakened at the moment. Perhaps we can do something here?

I ain't explicitly touching that one with a ten foot pole.

Is Tea allied with Leaf? Mountain is going to need to play nice with the group that nominally controls the land they live in, so maybe Jiraiya could get a favor from them by leaning on Tea to accept them as a sovereign village?

I was sort of thinking we do something like this. With some provisions in there along the lines of "And they're also allied with the Tea ninja" or something.

Something to prevent some stupid power struggle for the country would be nice.

I note that they would probably also have like, undying gratitude towards us if we returned the Capybara scroll to them.

Imagine having a culture where whether you go to heaven ("May you dwell in depths with the ancestors") or hell ("May your souls be gnawed forever in the abyss) you go to the exact same place.

Very illustrative of Mist, I feel. :V

Let's start with the shorter chapter. This one is really sweet for how short it it, though.

Keiko was taking longer than he anticipated, which was probably a good sign. He suspected that if Mori had invited her in order to give her a final rejection, Keiko would have been back already, and in tears. Unless she went to the Seventh Path again. Or did something drastic. In retrospect, they should have pushed harder for permission to escort her.

It's fine, Hazou, we've got this. When have we ever led you astray?

There was the sound of a door opening. Hazō leapt up.

"Keiko? How did it go? Are you OK?"

"Yes," Keiko said woodenly.

"You don't sound OK."

"After the disorientation of the initial event, the information available to my brain has finally filtered through to my heart—which, being a feeble and dysfunctional organ at the best of times, is struggling to cope. Please do not be alarmed if at some point today you find me spontaneously bursting into tears.

"a feeble and dysfunctional organ at the best of times", eh? Well, that can be improved with training and practice! [X] Convince Keiko to interact with her fanclub more

"Although in that event I may find it necessary to silence you as a witness," she added thoughtfully, "in which case perhaps you should be alarmed after all."

"So... everything is back to normal?"

Keiko nodded. "Fear not. The odds are in your favour, since at this moment I feel whatever is the opposite of homicidal towards you."

Heh, even after Noburi dropped the L-word bomb, Keiko still finds herself unable to say it. I do admit that "the opposite of homicidal" is a very MfD phrase, so we'll let it pass for now.

Her voice warmed a little. "Your clumsy blundering in some way prompted Ami to re-evaluate the situation, and she has ceased to distance herself from me. I would hug you if the idea were not viscerally repellent."

"Clumsy blundering"? You try to manipulate an incredibly smart, socially adroit, and certifiably crazy jounin, using Hazou as a medium, and see how that goes. Sheesh, tough crowd.

"That bad, huh?"

"Like inviting giant millipedes to crawl all over my body. In addition, I have issues regarding physical contact."

"Very funny. So what on earth made her do something so crazy?"

"The details are unimportant. What matters is that her reasoning was entirely rational and ultimately focused on my well-being, and that the apparent severing of ties was not in itself my fault. It is deeply regrettable that we have only reached this understanding now, when I am about to leave Mist and must thus busy myself with final preparations instead of spending entire days in her company."

Gōketsu Keiko refuses to provide information that might conceivably put her sister in a bad light, while simultaneously justifying clearly terrible decisions on said sister's part. Never mind. He wouldn't ruin her good mood with common sense.

I wonder how Keiko would react to Hazou comparing Ami's actions to Hana's. Because this was absolutely the former's version of going "pretty damn far".

"What are these final preparations?" Hazō asked.

"If I can find Anna, I believe I have some words for her on the subject of rebuilding relationships. Beyond that, I am entirely at your disposal. You have assisted me with my unresolved business in Mist—it is only fair for me to assist with yours.

You go rebuild those relationships, girl.

"Additionally, Ami requested that I inform you she now owes you a favour. This is a great power, and I fear for the future of this world should you misuse it. In other words, it can be filed next to most of your sealing ideas."

I don't think Keiko appreciates just how... impactful some of our sealing ideas are, with this comparison. That's fine though, no reason to worry her unnecessarily.

Hazō laughed.

"Now, Hazō, provide me with a plan to optimise. We have work to do."

Mission accomplished.

Of course, for him it's more complicated because his ancestors are the Kurosawa. Plus he committed the ultimate sin by turning missing-nin, so it's in his best interests for what he's been taught about the afterlife to be wrong.
I would like to point out that some of his ancestors would also be Uchiha.

This must make for a very awkward family reunion in the afterlife.

Clearly the best way to use this is to enlist Ami as a matchmaker to find both Hazo and Noburi the perfect romantic partners.

"I ran the numbers, and I'm clearly your best bet for taking over the world."
"That's not quite the criteria I-"
"Sadly you just used your favor, so now you'll have to do something else for me to get your perfect partner. And fight to the death over my honor, I suppose. How romantic!"

You know, it might actually be fairly interesting to ask Keiko to dip deeply into the frozen skein to see what she came up with as answers to that question, based on all the data she has about people in Leaf that might be possible matches. She can run the factors nearly as well as Ami, and she probably knows the Leaf people a lot better. She could use all that to possibly predict compatibility in terms of the many factors that make up personality and also political considerations and potential for working together to uplift the world.

It could be the second time Keiko nearly ends up in the Garden of the Lost due to player agency.

(No, I am not telling you the first. That would be too non-evil.)

Edit: That's QM snark, not anticipatory ruling.

So you're saying she wouldn't actually end up there if we asked this question?

Sounds like QM approval. This is now a shipping quest (again)
