This is a bit overkill. We need to be careful with Shin because he's no slouch, but we don't need to be the paranoid mess we were around Ami. Shin, for all his skills, still behaves like a human.


This is a bit aggressive still, he'll need time to make his decision so we should make it more along the lines of 'send me a letter with your answer before the Leaf delegation leaves'.

Also, we still haven't addressed the topic of the rest of Team Downfall. I would much prefer we tell him that if he wants to take the rest of his team with him, we can ask Jiraiya for permission.

I think I've fixed things up a bit to address those points.

I'm not super duper sold on the motive of the Team Downfall thing, but if you want to encourage expansion of the shipping graph by all means thats more out of confusion/not grokking the point than anything substantial.

  • Spend tonight and tomorrow morning in the market
    • While shopping for clothes, approach merchants, travelling performers/bards, craftsmen, etc.
    • Prioritize those merchants you've already spoken with
      • The glassblower, salt/spice merchant, brewer, any others.
    • Musicians/bards/performing troupes: ask in a tavern/ look there.
    • Offer writs of patronage, guarantees of premium prices, and other minor promises.
    • Tactics for any new or wary targets:
      • Allow Noburi to smooth talk them while you appear reserved and skeptical.
      • Noburi will prod them into making a sales pitch to ease your reservations. Eventually acquiesce.
      • Should Keiko be up to it she can interject from the rooftops: "Be grateful we are even considering you." etc.
  • Lunch with Shin
    • Prep:
      • Observe OPSEC, stay on your toes, no hard precommitments.
      • Be confident: Shin is not a Jonin, and you punch better than him.
      • Shin is a silver-tongued chakra viper, so keep your cool. Any barbed insults or backhanded compliments are solely to provoke you. Exhibit dry amusement instead.
    • Start the interaction amicably.
      • Minor flexing: casually name drop Ami for the regulars' menu. Mention we're getting promoted, ask if he is as well.
      • So how do you feel about the diplomat offer?
    • Gauge his answer, then elaborate:
      • In the spirit of where we left off last conversation: order a bottle of Kurohige's Revenge and two glasses (shallow pours, save the rest).
      • Cooperation was our motto during the exams. We're here to build bridges.
      • Here's the jumpstart to your career on a silver platter. Perhaps by some miracle you can convince us that the clan is halfway decent somewhere down the line too.
      • Might be able to talk to Jiraiya about bringing your teammates along too if you want, but no promises.
  • Before you leave Mist, go meet Hana again.
    • Don't get into a fight. You just want to spend some nice time with your mom.
    • Did she watch your matches?
      • Strict OPSEC on the Kotsuzui fight: The cover story is the truth. No fights, please mom?
    • Confide about the Ami debacle. Avoid details that might breach OPSEC.
      • How're you supposed to deal with people like that?

I'm kinda against the whole "invite Team Downfall", partly because we want to isolate Shin, and also because Anna and Kiri may not want to go, at all.

And also because I don't wanna push our luck when asking Jiraiya. Let's not alter the deal any further.
 
I'm going to just remove that bit for now, but further discussion on this would be appreciated if its a point of contention.

Do Team Downfall even like each other? I was under the impression that they were thrown together shortly before the exams for the specific purpose of executing a hit on Uplift.

Okay, this plan is more a suggestion, I won't be able to maintain it:

[] Action plan: Calm between storms
  • In the Kage box, mind our words, as Mist is probably very interested in our reaction.
  • Game night with Team Uplift only
    • We have all gone through a ton. We are going to spend a few hours ignoring the world.
    • After the game, or if a golden opportunity presents itself, we ask if Keiko wants to talk about anything/everything. We try to listen, and not interrupt with schemes or our own problems.
      • Whatever her choices, whatever happens, we are here for her.
    • If Keiko needs time alone to think, Hazou invites Noburi to go celebrate a little more loudly elsewhere.
      • Live it up a little. We are recognized as some of the best of the generation on our own, better than the rest of the generation combined when together, and are Leaf royalty to boot.
        • Try to avoid a hangover
  • Spend tomorrow morning in the market

But I do think there might still be things to cover, such as:
  • Does she need us to stay any longer to make the meeting?
  • Will she need us to cover for her while the meeting is happening?
  • Does she need us to take care of minor errands so that she can focus her energy elsewhere?
  • Seriously, does she need to talk about anything?

People have also suggested we drop a line to the Sand ninja. Something along the lines of "Sorry that we have to go. You guys are cool. We'll keep in touch."

How do folks feel about that?

This one should be approved by Akane! Keiko is still very stressed out and these suggestions may help her relax a bit. Knowing someone has your back tends to help.
