To be fair tbough they asked for at least a year, not come by at exactly a year. They wanted time to prepare and probably wouldn't appreciate it if we came back earlier than expected. I think holding off a week or two is better in the long run, and gives us time to settle things a bit at home, as well as give the team some much needed time to unwind.

Assess targets (mechanically: learn Aspects) and defend against Deceit- or Rapport-based attacks.
However, the reason we're doing this is to assist in characterization because folks tire of Hazou being at-times oblivious. On which note!!!
Noburi paused, bite of sandwich half-taken, and gave Hazō a jealous glance
Here Hazou is, being perceptive. Note this, all ye who decry his perceptiveness!

Theres no need to be exact--to the day-- about this. I dont understand why folks are getting into the nitty-gritty there. We can take a week, Keiko can become minimally grumpy after emotionally cuddling with Tenten for a bit, and we can get our game on.
If memory serves me, the year date was rough and the implication was more like 'please don't come back for at least a year, take plenty longer if you want'.

On the other hand, the more we let Takahashi centralize power and modernize the less of a grip the Heir of Ui mythos will have on the regular ninja of Mountain. Whatever route we want to go when we approach Mountain, it'll be good to have more influence over their people than less.

They may be fine if we stay away for longer than a year, but they can't complain if we come back on the date of our departure, and it makes us look punctual too.

[x] Action plan: laying the ground work

  • With the chunnin exams finally over it's time to start planning for the future
    • Hazō wants to make sure that Noburi, Kei and himself are on the same page.
      • No one is splitting up Team Uplift
    • It's less than a week till a year has past since we left Hidden Mountain.
    • Hazō wants to get there thoughts on trying to a secure an alliance with Hidden Mountain.
    • As the only people who have been there we are ideally positioned to negotiate.
    • On top of that we are the children of the Hokage.
      • Which you have to admit is pretty dang impressive since last time we were there we where missing nin.
    • Also Kei is the Heir of Ui
      • Only Kei can decide what that means
      • But is something that was important to the village
      • And no matter how you spin. It Kei has gotten crazy strong
        • Even Zabuza acknowledged her
        • How crazy was that!?
    • Stress how much Hazō wants to work with Takahashi on making this work
      • He knows how much Kei respects the man
    • Hidden Mountain shaped all of us
      • It's time to repay that debt and help them if we can
  • Go meet with Shin before it gets late.
    • This isn't an obligation or anything if you want to stay in Mist.
    • If he doesn't want to leave his team, we can ask Jiraiya if he can bring them along too.
  • Tomorrow, spend the day in the markets.
    • Get your shopping done.
      • Kimono for Mari
      • Pay attention to every merchant you interact with for whether they'd be suitable for a writ of patronage.
    • Go around town and try to identify talented merchants, tradesmen, and performers who might be amenable to a writ of patronage.
      • Approach them with the offer.
      • [Maybe some more details about approach?]
  • Before you leave, go meet Hana again.
    • Spend quality time together
    • Ask about what the Kurosawa clan thinks of Hazō
    • Stay away from the topic of Jiraiya, Leaf, or Mari.

[X] Training Hazou: Empathy Drip.

SC is awesome, but to properly enjoy it we need to be, you know, alive. Most of the battles we have nowadays are social battles, at least ones with meaningfull stakes, so we need to raise socials. Not to mention Hazou fucking up convoluted plans by shoving foot in the mouth or generally being awkward, oblivious etc.

Will try to come up with ideas later...

[X] Action plan: Hopefully Interesting
  • Calm down. Zabuza's not hunting you anymore, you're safe. Safe.
  • Go meet with Shin before it gets late.

      • Give a few writ of patronage to merchants/craftsmen/entertainer that made good impression on you.
  • Before you leave, go meet Hana again.
    • Stay away from the topic of Jiraiya, Leaf, or Mari.
    • Spend quality time together in public if possible.
  • Go meet Noburi's family if he wants to go.

  • Confide about the Ami debacle. Avoid details that might breach OPSEC.
  • How are you supposed to deal with people like that?
  • Stay away from the topic of Jiraiya, Leaf, or Mari.
It's a good idea to get more advice, but I am not convinced that she can tell Hazou anything that Jirayia, Mari, or that Yamanaka consultant Jiraiya had brought in can't. On the other hand, she has a history of reckless behaviour when it comes to people whom she perceives as having wronged Hazou. We don't want to accidentally sic her on Ami. (On the other hand we might want to deliberately sic her on Ami---but we need to discuss that separately.)

Should we discuss some way to stay in touch with Hana?

I think we should set up a 'normal' method of communication and a few emergency/subtle methods, and maybe some codes. We couuuuld also tell her about some places to lay low in case she ever needs to get out of Mist in a hurry, if politics turns against her. We could even give her directions to hidden mountain, but not tell her what's there. Just tell her it's a safe place to be kept secret.

From Hana's perspective, what Ami did and what Mari did are orders of magnitude apart. Mari stole Hazou away from Mist and she assumed he was dead for a full year. Even once Hana knew her son was still alive it was impossible to meet him, and Mari was still there except with Hazou's gratitude. Then Mari seduces her way into Mist's biggest enemy and establishes a family for Hazou that Hana can never be a part of.

Ami, in contrast, played Hazou for a fool a couple times and scared him for a day or two with the fake proposal. It certainly won't endear Ami to Hana, but no lasting damage was done and Jounin are all crazy. Plus, Hana's on thin ice after the stunt she pulled back in Leaf so she's probably working harder to not be impolitik again.

Rough draft.

Someone said something about playing in our league. Well, now's a good time?

This was going to be much less fleshed-out. Then I remembered that there is a restaurant named Byakuren's Cookbook, that Shin said "We'll lose like Kurohige" and that he probably enjoys being an overly dramatic little shit.

(Why yes, I enjoy making the lives of the Kurosawa clan more... interesting, why do you ask?)

[X] Action Plan: Byakuren and Kurohige
  • Sanity check: run everything by Keiko, Noburi and Jiraiya
  • Spend morning at the market:
    • Shop!
    • Network:
      • Approach merchants, craftsmen, and book collectors. Look for performers/musicians around taverns.
        • Collectors: discreetly ask about the Akatsuki Book (it's possibly banned, or doesn't mention Akatsuki directly).
      • Draft them into your Intel Network, presenting it as a "joint business venture" with our clan.
      • Offer writs of patronage, price guarantees, partial financial backing, other minor promises.
      • Direct interested parties to the Gouketsu compound in Leaf. Preferred timetable: within the next two months.
      • Guidelines:
        • Prioritize those you've approached previously. Glassblowers, salt/spice merchants, brewers, others.
        • Work out a bad/good cop routine with Noburi and Keiko. Use it on new/wary targets.
        • Goal: 24 merchants, 3-4 bards, 1-2 performing troupes.
  • Lunch with Shin.
    • Guidelines:
      • Observe OPSEC, stay alert, avoid hard commitments.
      • Be confident. Shin isn't a jounin.
      • He is a silver-tongued viper. Keep your cool. Respond to taunts/manipulations with dry amusement.
    • Start the interaction amicably.
      • Minor flexing: casually name-drop Ami for the regulars' menu. Mention your promotion, ask about his.
    • Elaborate on your offer/intentions:
      • Cooperation was our motto during the exams. We're here to build bridges.
      • We're offering an enormous boost to his career, and a distant opportunity to convince us that the Kurosawa Clan is halfway decent.
      • (As a callback, order a bottle of Kurohige's Revenge and two glasses (shallow pours, save the rest).)
    • Invite him to the games night.

Double check with Jiraiya that the following is still alright.
  • Be careful: he's probably still pissed.
To keep Jiraiya's spoons low (relatively speaking), would it be possible to add something along the lines of "Hazou checks plan details with Noburi/Keiko before talking to Jiraiya, so when Jiraiya presses for details we're ready and don't stress him out" or something like that?
Offer them writs of patronage, guarantees of premium prices, and other minor promises.
I'm honestly curious, but do we have the ability to make these promises? One would think the Merchant Council would be in charge of this stuff, and they aren't in Jiraiya's back pocket. Just a thought for discussion.
Shin is a silver-tongued chakra viper, so keep your cool. Any barbed insults or backhanded compliments are solely to provoke you. Ignore them, look bored.
I'd rather we make ourselves look dryly amused than anything, since looking bored makes us seem like we don't really care about him and this is just for formality's sake. Unless you mean that we should look bored at his insults as opposed to in general.
In case of emergency leave immediately.
What's an emergency? If Shin shows up with Anna and Kiri in tow are we leaving (Also what happens if he does that, what's the plan?)?
First: casually name drop Ami to get the regular's menu.
inb4 we end up owing Ami a huge favor for doing this :p
Before you leave Mist, go meet Hana again.
  • Confide about the Ami debacle. Avoid details that might breach OPSEC.
    • Ask how you're supposed to deal with people like that.
  • Don't get into a fight. You just want to spend some nice time with your mom.
Would it be possible for the "don't get into a fight" to go first? We wanna make sure to just spend some happy time with her, and confiding in her could stress her out. I'd like Hazou to be relatively IC when confiding, and if he thinks talking to Hana about Ami might start a thing it might be best to not talk about it at all.

Leaf needs to evac without warning under the cover of night. Zabuza being back with his report on the Battle of the Gods dramatically increases the odds of an imminent world war, and when most of Leaf's eggs are in a foreign basket is the time to strike. Up until now most of the world probably didn't even know that Leaf had lost its jinchuuriki or that Leaf wasn't the one who took out Yagura. That's to say nothing of skywalkers.

  • Double check details with Keiko/Noburi, and then with Jiraiya that the following is still alright.
    • Be careful: he's probably still pissed.
  • Arrange lunch with Shin tomorrow at Byakuren's Cookbook
    • Send a messenger inviting him and make the reservations.
  • Spend tonight and tomorrow morning in the market
    • While getting your clothes shopping done, approach merchants, travelling performers/bards, craftsmen, etc.
    • Prioritize those merchants you've already spoken with
      • The glassblower, salt/spice merchant, brewer, any others.
    • Musicians/bards/performing troupes: ask in a tavern/ look there.
    • Offer them writs of patronage, guarantees of premium prices, and other minor promises.
    • Tactics for any new or wary targets:
      • Allow Noburi to smooth talk them while you appear reserved and skeptical.
      • Noburi will prod them into making a sales pitch to ease your reservations. Eventually acquiesce.
      • Should Keiko be up to it she can interject from the rooftops: "You should be grateful we are even considering you." etc.
  • Lunch with Shin
    • Prep:
      • Treat this similarly to Ami caution-wise. Be more confident: Shin is not a Jonin, and you punch better than him.
      • Shin is a silver-tongued chakra viper, so keep your cool. Any barbed insults or backhanded compliments are solely to provoke you. Exhibit dry amusement instead.
    • Start the interaction amicably.
      • Minor flexing: casually name drop Ami for the regulars' menu. Mention we're getting promoted, ask if he is as well.
      • Offer him the junior diplomat position.
    • Gauge the reaction, then elaborate:
      • In the spirit of where we left off last conversation: order a bottle of Kurohige's Revenge and two glasses (shallow pours, save the bottle for later).
        • Implication: We're Byakuren and he's Kurohige.
      • Cooperation was our motto during the exams. We're here to build bridges.
      • Here's the jumpstart to your career on a silver platter. Perhaps by some miracle you can convince us that the clan is halfway decent somewhere down the line too.
      • Two great opportunities there, and many more on the horizon. Take it or leave it.
  • Before you leave Mist, go meet Hana again.
    • Don't get into a fight. You just want to spend some nice time with your mom.
    • Did she watch your matches?
      • Keep strict OPSEC on the Kotsuzui fight: The cover story is the truth. No fights, please mom.
    • Confide about the Ami debacle. Avoid details that might breach OPSEC.
      • Ask how you're supposed to deal with people like that.

The J-man was like "Yeah this is a good idea totes do that." and so we shall.

Thanks, @MMKII, I have some feedback on the edits:

Treat this similarly to Ami caution-wise. Be more confident: Shin is not a Jonin, and you punch better than him.
This is a bit overkill. We need to be careful with Shin because he's no slouch, but we don't need to be the paranoid mess we were around Ami. Shin, for all his skills, still behaves like a human.

Two great opportunities there, and many more on the horizon. Take it or leave it.
This is a bit aggressive still, he'll need time to make his decision so we should make it more along the lines of 'send me a letter with your answer before the Leaf delegation leaves'.

Also, we still haven't addressed the topic of the rest of Team Downfall. I would much prefer we tell him that if he wants to take the rest of his team with him, we can ask Jiraiya for permission.

I'm not entirely sold on this.

What's the reasoning here? Why do we want to do this?

Kiri is going to be absolute torture for Noburi. Anna is going to be ??? for Keiko and she likely won't survive past Tenten finding out about how she bullied Keiko.

The Mist!InoChoShika will each have a representative in Leaf?

We want Shin isolated and dependent on us for friendship. Having his team there under cuts this goal

I'm 70% saying this more along the lines of 'at least address the issue in the first place'. I personally think that Shin will see us as more genuine and accommodating about the offer if we let him keep Team Downfall together if he wants, and that the consequences of having Kiri and Anna in Leaf won't be too large unless they start butting into our lives on purpose. Leaf is a big place and the diplomatic quarters aren't next door to the Goketsu estate.
