ANNOUNCER: And in this corner-- (cuts herself off as music fills the air)
HAZOU: (smiles)
SHIKAMARU: No.
HAZOU: (smiles)
SHIKAMARU: (sighs) Fine. Do it quickly so I can go take a nap.
HAZOU: (grinning from ear to ear: ) But Shikamaru... YOU WOULD NOT BELIEVE YOUR EYES, IF TEN MILLION FIREFLIES LIT UP THE WORLD AS YOU WENT TO SLEEP
SHIKAMARU: (clutching his hands over his ears: ) Hate. Hate. Hate.

This tactic also works against our sister.

HAZOU: 'CAUSE YOU'LL GET A THOUSAND HUGS FROM TEN THOUSAND LIGHTNING BUGS
KEI: (shaking uncontrollably)

I would like to leave a Girl Genius quote here.

"We are elite warriors trained in speed, subtlety and misdirection. What have a bunch of dirty pirates missing-nin got to counteract that?"

"A reckless enthusiasm for massive firepower?"

HAZOU: (smiling, douses himself in oil)
JIRAIYA: (stops pinching the bridge of his nose for long enough to wrestle the match away from HAZOU)
HAZOU:
Edit: :ninja:ed by @Lailoken by 3 minutes.
I already have some promising material for the date itself (promising from a QM perspective, not promising for Hazō), but the aftermath will be at least partially in your hands. I've learned my lesson about writing great scenes of doom only to have the players treacherously vote in something sensible.
I was still catching up when this vote happened; could someone who was there please link me to the discussion that led to the decision to meet with Ami one-on-one? Given what we know of her (basically a Mori Sue: all of the bloodline's benefits, none of the drawbacks, and a Jounin), if we manage to get out of this meeting without giving Ami All The Secrets and giving her a legitimate pretext to murder us (or worse), which she will be able to use to wring concessions from Jiraiya, it would be because she has even worse plans for us.

The only causes for optimism we have are 1) OOC knowledge that she prioritises Keiko's well-being over that of the Mori clan; and 2) Jiraiya permitted the meeting.

Because being afraid to talk to people when they have no leverage over you and no motive to hurt you, is more than a bit ridiculous, and the only reason it's seen as a reasonable stance in this thread is paranoia borne of past trauma. Hazou is heir presumptive to Leaf's ruling clan right now. He will not be able to live his life locked away in his lighthouse the Goketsu headquarters, safe from all the scary social specs.

Stats aren't everything. Hazou learns from experience, and our plans have a huge influence over what he learns. He's learned combat tactics from all the excellent combat plans the hivemind has supplied him with over the years, to the point where it's an acknowledged part of his characterization. He can learn to be more socially graceful in a similar way, if we help him. In my mind, the most immediately beneficial aspect of meeting with Ami is that it's excellent practice without all that much risk involved.

On that note, social skills aren't mind control, and they aren't magic. If we tell Hazou in a plan not to say anything on topics X, Y, Z no matter what, then he won't. If Ami's feeling combative, he's going to yield the social combats and feel embarrassed or awkward, but not much more.

On a more personal level, I'd really like the hivemind itself to get over its irrational fear of talking to people, and I hope this interaction will go well enough that we can continue to build on it. Given where we are right now, and our goals, it's arguably more useful for Hazou to be an effective leader and negotiator than to punch harder. And honestly, it can be done, it shouldn't even be very difficult with our combined brain power, but we have to actually try first.

Don't know about linking it but I can try to summarize some of the reasons:

  • Ami is interesting OOC.
  • She looks like a major player whose motivations are unknown to us and we happen to be in Mist right now so we can at least try and figure them out.
    • We will run into her at some point with even less control about the meeting if she is as powerful as Jiraiya claims she is; might as well get it over with in a relatively safe environment.
    • Imagine her turning out to be an ally of our core values but we missed out on her support because we were too scared to even ask.
  • She is important to Keiko and therefore important to Hazou by proxy.
  • Recent talk-y plans going well and the QM's suggestion to do stuff to make things interesting finally overcame the thread's generic caution to do even mildly risky stuff.
  • @Roomba promised @Velorien a date with Ami. And it is in our interest not to break that promise because hell hath no fury like a QM scorned.
  • ^_^

Jirayia literally just told Hazou that she is blackmailing him with secrets a thousand levels above Hazou's clearance.

@Roomba , @Tua , Thanks for the explanation. I remember (way back) how we were going to make Waka (and yes, I know that he's not a Wakahisa anymore, but he'll always be "Waka" to me ) the social-specced face of the group, but then Hazou ended up doing most of the face stuff anyway (both punchy and not punchy), with appropriate consequences.

Really, our team is topsy-turvy at this point:
  • Our strongest fighter is a Mori.
  • Our best spokesnin is a Wakahisa, but he almost never gets to do it.
  • Our planning and logistics are provided by a Kurosawa.

"In ancient times, it was the Yamanaka who were the verbal thinkers, we believe, and Nara the visual. I trust you see the implications?"

Kei did. Shikaku's phrasing suggested two interesting things. First, he referred to these modes of thinking as if they were roles, with one clan taking each. That suggested that the Akimichi also had some distinctive means of thinking that was neither verbal nor visual, which was fascinating in itself, but not as fascinating as the idea that the three clans had somehow developed complementary ways of perceiving the world, and that those ways stayed complementary even if the roles changed around.

SHIKAKU: I see. By switching your traditional clan roles around just like our ancestors did you acknowledge the merit of stimulating change to improve the world while at the same time you signal your willingness to ally with us in a way only we would understand. How cunning and subtle, indeed.

On another note from the Ami thing...

I'm looking forward to getting back to Leaf when we can hopefully have some real free time to do stuff we want instead of constant training.

Like, for instance, helping train academy students. We can make them absolute terrors for their teachers by working to teach them Hazou-level creativity.

While we're at it, your boss is the acknowledged leader of a major village, your fellow genin are irreplaceable clan heirs, and your group's second-in-command responsible for the people stuff is... actually still Mari. That woman is good at what she does.

Our next stop is probably Mountain. It's time, the group is an irreplaceable entry, J desperately needs to rack up another big win before the clock runs out, and it lets @Velorien keep us stewing about Akane's fate for another six months real-time.

At some point in the not-so-distant future, Umino Iruka will look back and decide that this is exactly where it all went wrong.

Jiraiya: Hazou, this is your team for this mission. They're good kids and this is a milk run, make sure they learn something.

... later ...

Hazou: What!? You only have 20 explosive tags? How are you going to keep camp protected?

Genin #1: Wait what, aren't we staying in an inn?

Hazou: Are you insane? People die in inns. We're going to be making camp well above cloud level.

Genin #1: Uhh, if we're camping on a skytower then do we need explosive seals at all?

Hazou: Kid, let me tell you about the sky squids ...

... later ...

Hazou: So, what did you learn from the scouting?

Genin #2: Well, the target has a really predictable pattern every day. He takes the same path to the palace every day, seems to be a diligent worker. Goes to meet some friends in a bar every Friday. Has amiable relationships with his coworkers. He lives with nobody else, but regularly takes time to meet with his nephews.

Hazou: Any other observations?

Genin #3: Umm, there doesn't seem to be anyone else living with him. He seems to be pretty patriotic, but his pants hang a little lower whenever he's coming back from work. I think he's probably sneaking a few coins back in some padded pockets.

Genin #1: Huh, if that's him stealing where's that money going? It's not going to his nephews, and he's not spending him on himself.

Genin #2: What about the game he plays on friday? It's a variant of bijuu poker. He seems to lose a lot more than he wins.

Genin #1: That might explain it, but he's stealing a lot of money. Back of the bar games don't usually have huge bids?

Hazou: Did you see them play?

Genin #3: That was my job. I didn't see anything obvious though. When I listened in, the talk was standard chatter with friends.

Genin #2: Wait, the really fancy bijuu poker sets have seals on them, right? So they glow and stuff when people play. You could hide a ton of other seals on those cards. Maybe they have a chakra sensor that detected your jutsu?

Genin #3: What!? But they're civilians, there's no way they could afford that.

Hazou: They are stealing money from the treasury. Look, I know you've been taught to look "underneath the underneath" but that's not enough. What you're really trying to do is judge possible ways the world could be. Which possible world is a better fit for what you see? ...

... later ...

Hazou: KUMO IS A JOUNIN!

Genin #1: Shit, shit, I umm, try to distract him so the others can get away and then try to disengage underground.

Hazou: WRONG! THE JOUNIN KILLS YOU AND HIS PARTNER TAKES OUT THE OTHERS!

... later ...

Hazou: KUMO IS A TARRASQUE WHO IS BEING HIDDEN BY A GENJUTSU!

Genin #3: Oh god, break the genjutsu and then try to escape.

Hazou: WRONG! YOU NEVER NOTICED THE GENJUTSU! YOU ARE EATEN!

... later ...

Yamanaka: Why do you keep sending him out with genin teams? Each and every one of them comes back scared that their beds will explode and are only comfortable sleeping either 5000 feet above ground or 5000 feet below ground.

Jiraiya: That is awkward, is that why our genin keep on putting all their energy into getting an earth elemental nature?

Yamanaka: Yes! Kami, all of them need to learn "Hiding LIke a Mole" so they can sleep underground. That's not even the half of it, they keep on imagining everyone around them turning into chakra beasts, can't help but plan for every possible contingency, and are so nervous they're always shaking. So many of them have been having nervous breakdowns that we have to have our genin helping with therapy.

Jiraiya: But you can get them functional again?

Yamanaka: Yes, but why are you forcing us to?

Jiraiya: So, for this past academy class how many of them have been regularly working with Hazou?

Yamanaka: Hmm, about half?

Jiraiya: And how many have died from Hazou's half? the other half?

Yamanaka: Uhh, 6 and 14.

Jiraiya: And that is why.

Like, for instance, helping train academy students. We can make them absolute terrors for their teachers by working to teach them Hazou-level creativity.
I foresee a friendly barely nonlethal competition between Hazou and Kagome over who can train the most creative cautious not-completely-insane students.

Well, that's more of an Adults are Not Useless matter. I am not really complaining, just reminiscing of what we were planning at the start of the quest and how things turned out.

Not to alarm people but this has got to be the most blatant hint the QMs have given us so far about Zabuza's current location and disguise.
That's crazy talk. Obviously Zabuza wouldn't have taken the place of one of the clan kids, that's insane.

Obviously he'd slip in as his own clan, because Hazou has been Zabuza this whole time. Think about it, the incident in hot springs increasing Mist's influence in the main land plus added troops to put pressure on the opposing nations, setting up a clan that starts off influential from the get go while conveniently setting up for a potential alliance with Mist, creating a powerful tri-village alliance that rock the world? The Mist's Kage being "kidnapped"? This whole thing was a set up from the start! Clearly the real Hazo has been dead since day 1! Wake up sheeple!

Clearly the real Hazo has been dead since day 1! Wake up sheeple!

Makes sense. Why else would Hazou have rolled Taijutsu in the 400s in the early chapters?

Zabuza was clearly still adjusting to genin level skills and he slipped up (sometimes being so incredibly powerful and handsome can be a curse).
Fortunately, he adjusted quickly and now restricts himself to Taijutsu levels of a Chunin candidate.
