So... A question.

If the Nara call their printing press a printing press publicly... then how the heck hasn't anyone else figured out how to make one? The name kind of gives away their mechanic of action.

There's lots that can be done with a stationary force wall is what I was meaning.

I think everyone actually does printing, actually. It's just that the Nara have a machine that does it more precisely than anyone with great flexibility.

I think the problem with Movable force walls was that Kagome thought it would take about a years worth of tinkering to get done, and theres other stuff that we can't afford to put off a year or so.
I'm not familiar with this reference. Do you have a link? Also, keep in mind that 'movable force walls' right now more means 'regular force walls with a wooden frame specifically made to let you move both seals equally, thus letting you move the wall'. Given Mink's thorough analysis on the matter, I am skeptical that what Kagome is referring to is the same thing that I'm talking about.

He also did a substantial amount of feasibility analysis on how much jiggering the seals could take before failing to function.

Oopsies. I keep doing that thing when the Forcewall stuff comes up.

When I refer to "Movable Forcewalls" I refer to a single element variant of Forcewalls that can be moved.

We should do Minks bullshit, literally as soon as we can spare the time and resources. No reason not to since we can do it with vanilla forcewalls on a frame.

Off topic, but Jounin auras being personalized so intensely, and yet their origin being mysterious, weakly supports Kagome's idea of chakra as being about communication between minds. Hiruzen has lots of chakra, so his chakra accurately reports, "I could kill you but I am more likely to grandfather you," etc..

I believe Velorien linked it in Lighting Up the Dark.
Welcome to the quest! I look forward to having another source of ideas on how the players can break everything. Also, it's good to know that the LUD links to the quest are doing something--it's not a thing I have any source of feedback on.

It was the 4th, in fact :)

Citizen, do not be alarmed if you now recall a devilishly handsome man congratulating your birthday.

In case the seal did not work as advertized, you are now inside-out, a sea mammal, in space or a combination thereof - here is what you should have remembered:

I've come to the conclusion that if this many people are getting confused and/or dubious re: anti-KI then it probably isn't safe to test with Kei because either Hazou will convey the wrong emotion or Kei will interpret it in whichever way she will find most hurtful.

On that note, what do people think about practicing anti-KI with Noburi?

It makes perfect sense to me and I think it'll be totally fine.

I feel similarly, but the current version has some people expecting Kei to feel patronised or overwhelmed, and if we're going to try this with Kei I want it to be phrased in a way that does not cause such objections.

I don't trust my prediction on this matter to such a degree that I'm totally comfortable ignoring such objections, and I can't rule out the possibility that Hazou or Kei might hold such interpretations themselves.

Word count: 395.

[X] Action Plan: One small step
  • Hazou asks Keiko's permission to talk to Ami
    • He carefully considers Keiko's feelings and tries to be very thoughtful in his approach.
    • He won't do anything without her permission. It's under her complete control.
    • He would, however, like to hear what Ami has to say about what happened between her and Keiko.
    • If there's any hope of reconciliation, he'd like to try. He knows how much Ami means to Keiko. In family conflicts, it sometimes takes an outsider to get through to particularly stubborn people.
    • He hopes that Keiko might find it in herself to forgive Mari someday, if he succeeds.
  • Grab an hour-ish of Jiraiya's time, alone, if possible.
    • Ask him about Killing Intent.
      • What's the deal there?
    • Help us practice resisting it, please?
    • Ask Jiraiya to floor you with a bit of his KI as he is the scariest/strongest around.
    • Now. Get. Up.
      • You are Hazou, son of Hana and Shinji.
      • Just one man.
      • Jiraiya is also just one man.
      • If you can't stand against Jiraiya's will, how will you stand against the world itself?
      • The world is a ravenous, unfeeling machine, slowly devouring humanity. We are all its victims - civilians and ninjas, innocents and killers, the weak and the powerful. We all deserve more.
      • You must defeat it. And you can.
      • You took a mundane defensive seal, and let people walk on air with it. In your hands, a pile of wood and a storage scroll turn into a blazing inferno of death.
      • You will bring down every wall, shatter every chain, undo every barrier the world places in your path. You will find a way, as you always have.
      • You must win. And you will.
      • Stand. Raise your head high. Look Jiraiya in the eye.
    • Repeat a few times.
      • Try to at least raise your head and look Jiraiya in the eye without hurting yourself.
    • Ask Jiraiya for intel on our competitors.
  • Bond with Keiko and Noburi:
    • It is readily apparent that Hazou has less skill with relationships than a fish.
    • To rectify this, we would like to create a post-interaction survey to have individuals fill out, to get feedback on the quality of social interaction.
    • Hazou makes the above suggestion in his most serious tone, and attempts to argue in favor of it seriously.
    • He uses all of his Deceit to push this joke as far as he can.
@Oneiros @Noumero @QTesseract it begins. Am I forgetting anyone else who wanted in?

    • He also hopes that Keiko might find it in herself to forgive Mari someday, if he succeeds.

I am contractually obligated to further certain shenanigans, this being one of them.

Hazou asks Keiko's permission to talk to Ami

I don't recall Keiko speaking about her encounter with Ami to Hazou since I do remember the thread talking about why/how Keiko lied to Hazou/Noburi where she was when they got split up for the first exam.

Is that the only excuse we have to talk to Ami? (Of course, I am no faflec so there is a good chance I forgot when she told us about meeting her?)

Pretty sure it's been strongly implied if not outright stated that Hazou dying doesn't end the quest, so I'm not sure how the current plan (which displays a distinct absence of continent-destroying nukes) would render the game unplayable. But yes, risks to things we care about exist.
I dunno... I think back in the beginning we were expecting you to die quickly and a lot, so continuing after you kicked it made sense. Now, after 3 years and a million words, I'm not sure I could stand to continue if Hazō died.

I meant absolutely no insult or any negativity of anything.
*hug* Thank you.

Having clever [players] is really awesome, until you have to spend mental energy to dissect their cleverness to ascertain its correctness.
Welcome to our world, said the QMs.

We can float the idea to him/Jiraiya as a project I suppose. I don't expect Hazou to be able to massively contribute to that at the moment though. He can probably make a Campfire Seal or something in a few weeks on the other hand, and thats something we want. Etc.
Moveable force walls are important because industrial-scale production is important:
Force walls are already movable...? You simply need a very rigid frame.

Also I do not believe it was ever established whether you could partially print seals with a press and then have sealmasters fill in and infuse the remaining
Please vote this in for one of my updates. I make no promises about the outcome but zomg it would be fun to write. Dunno about to read, but definitely to write.

Airships: However they are made, they change everything even if it takes one ninja to move dozens of people or tonnes of cargo.
Airships get talked about a lot, but I've never been clear on what advantage they have over a ninja with a backpack full of storage scrolls. At least, what advantage they have that is worth the research, construction, and maintenance issues. Is it only that it allows getting above threats and avoiding challenging terrain?

Given Mink's thorough analysis on the matter, I am skeptical that what Kagome is referring to is the same thing that I'm talking about.
Do you have a link to that?

Definitely eaglejarl's, 15th of December...
18th, actually, but good memory!

Odd start, but I can definitely dig a slow burn. I can't contribute right now (I'm actually behind some chapters, since I hit one I've been struggling to get myself to read through), but I'll do my best to catch up ASAP, hopefully today, and help out.

Until then, as a reminder to encourage me to catch up so I can affect what my vote is doing:

When Keiko did show up, she was very clearly shaken. The boys took one look and sprang up to lay out a pair of domes.

"The proctor escorted me past the Mori compound," she said hollowly once they'd lit up the interior of the Earth Dome. "My sister was waiting there. She… she acted like everything was fine. Like she was happy to see me. She said she was proud that I had grown strong enough to be entered into the Exams. That she had been worried I would be unable to keep my-- my promise to come home."

Keiko had slowly curled in on herself, back up against the dome, arms wrapping around her knees, looking for all the world like she was trying to become one of her pangolins. It struck Hazou how small she actually was, for all her terrifying skill in combat.

She continued staring into the distance over the tops of her knees, seeing nothing. "She was so excited that I had maneuvered my way back so I could rejoin the clan."

Her head dropped to her chest, her face hidden behind her limbs now. "I could not make myself tell her the truth. But she realized it. I hesitated, showed insufficient enthusiasm. She did not speak to me like a sister again, after that."

Noburi and Hazou looked between Keiko and one another. "Keiko," Noburi began, "I'm so sorry you're being made to confront this tonight."

"Did you check that it was really Ami?" asked Hazou.

"It was her!" Keiko shouted, not looking up, surprising both her teammates. "I know it was."

"Okay, I believe you," Hazou said, doing his best to sound reassuring.

"That's some good news, though," Noburi offered. "She's still alive and safe. She still wants you two to be a part of each others' lives."

Hazou nodded, before realizing Keiko wouldn't be able to see him with her face buried in her lap and stopping. "I think it makes little sense to assume that her sudden change in demeanor was caused by negative emotion rather than surprise. Given some time to process the reality of the situation, I expect she will come to terms with the new status quo and feel comfortable reaching out to you again."

The whole team was silent for a minute. Then, slowly, wordlessly, without looking up, Keiko stretched out her hands toward her siblings. Hesitantly, Hazou reached out to take her hand. She flinched when they made contact, and she pulled her arms back around herself, shaking her head.

"No, sorry, stupid," she mumbled.

They sat together until the dome dissolved around them.

Also see how Keiko blames Mari for destroying her relationship with Ami irreparably, and both Hazou and Noburi accept it without comment. They absolutely know.

EDIT: Damn you @faflec

Here's my version if anyone wants.

[x] Action Plan: The Power of Something to Protect: Go Even Further Beyond!
Is there a particular reason that you have the Jiraiya section before the Keiko section? If not, would you be amenable to reversing them?
We don't even know yet if a person even can project anything other than killing intent in MfD.
We do actually. Sarutobi Hiruzen did.
