I'm not sure what politicking we could effectively do. And frankly, I'd be worried about Mr. Foot-In-Mouth Goketsu causing an inadvertent problem while Jiraiya already has a near-ideal state in which to conduct further negotiations of his own.

Meeting Telescope merchant might be a deal maker on the extra week in Mist thing tbh.

Personally would like to spend some time in mist politicking. However willing to negotiate on that to guarantee sometime in leaf working on other projects
All things considered I'd rather politick in Leaf, both for the dangling plot strings and for the relative benefit of improving our domestic situation as opposed to that of a (close) ally. Also because it avoids drunk, stupid Mist-nin from coming after us in the dead of night, but that's a stupidly low risk due to how fucked it would make Mist and is stated mainly for laughs.

something something Akatsuki assassin something something WW4

Edit: Oh yeah, it also lets us train more secretive things like bloodlines/techniques without having to watch for spies everywhere.

[X] If we ever find a telescope merchant, kill them.

Pretty sure that an alliance is finalized and that Jiraiya already finished negotiation. He even won favorable trade agreements.

Was the alliance finalized? I thought we were still in negotiations.

At this point our performance will greatly help the alliance negotiations, but they are not finalized. Jiraiya has gotten some favorable trade deals from gambling on our victory in this event, and Ren has seen to it that the Mist teams that were in opposition to her family got stomped by us in said event. But negotiations are still ongoing, and alliance negotiations between Leaf and Mist will almost certainly not be held with the other Kages present, except perhaps the Kazekage if Sand is already in an alliance with Leaf.

@Dictator4Hire @Kiba
Who said anything about actually finding the scroll? The most time consuming thing I'm advocating for is Keiko spending some time on the 7th path getting to squee at the Great Library (and maybe find something out about a summon clan we can use later)

I'd want the Great Library thing to happen regardless - that's been on the backburner for a long time, and shouldn't take all that much time just to go see.

How much time do you consider to be acceptable and, more importantly, why can't it wait until after the tournament?

Don't get me wrong; I'd love to see the 7th path library. There's also a ton of other things I'd like us to do too, like making a business, inventing airships, Hazou personally politicking, etc. I personally just can't justify spending even a day on any of those activities since the tournament is simply that important for Jiraiya and our political careers, not to mention what it means for Leaf on the international stage.

Ren pretty much shut the traps out of opposing clans.

I'd rather not assume it's a done deal. Let's just ask Jiraiya if it is done and, better yet, we can ask him what we shouldn't be worrying about so we can use our month of training more effectively. Knowing exactly what our clan head wants us to do will only be to our benefit. It's definitely something we should ask about at the party or sooner if possible.

TBF Keiko can't really do much in the Great Academy since it probably isn't written in a language she can understand (see: Pandā having to translate for her when researching Akatsuki summons). It might be a good idea to have a basic check-in with Pandā and ask if he can go to the Great Academy, and possibly see what valuables (techniques or whatnot) he can get. It won't take long and can be part of an overall check-in with the rest of her tessera.

@eaglejarl @Velorien @OliWhail Some time-skip suggestions. Feel free to read or ignore at your pleasure.
One thing I've seen work fairly well in other Quests (specifically thinking of Forge of Destiny) is the QM treating the character as having a certain number of actions in each time period during a time-skip. They came up with a number of actions they think the character could reasonably do in a period of time (e.g. a 1 month training section), and then let the players allocate their time amongst options by providing major and minor actions. These included things like social actions (e.g. try to build a support base in Leaf, / do politics), training actions (e.g. Find someone to help train (ensure above average XP gains for time spent here)), plot line actions (e.g. look for a summoning scroll), or do some write-in action (e.g. track down and buy a telescope).

As an example of how this format could work, you could do something like as follows:

Over the course of the month, Hazou gets 4 major actions and 4 minor actions. Major actions and minor actions can be exchanged at a 1 - 3 rate. Allocate actions via plan as you wish below:

Major Actions:
[] [Major] Train with Teachers. Can be taken multiple times. Each selection adds 0.5 per day to Hazou's XP gain over the timeskip and allows up to 100 XP (if available) to be spent on a single attribute.
-[] 1x
-[] 2x
-[] 3x
-[] 4x
-[] 5x
[] [Major] Sealing Research. Can be taken multiple times. Each selection provides roughly a week of progress towards a seal.
[] [Major] Spend time in Mist. Can be taken once.
-[] Write-in: What do you do?
[] [Major] Spend time building a support base in Leaf. Win support amongst Leaf clans, merchants, and ninja. Write-in methods of how
[] [Major] You heard a telescope merchant came through. Track them down and buy one.
[] [Major] Do smaller things instead. Gain three minor actions for each major action spent here. Can be chosen multiple times.
[] [Major] Write-in. Should be something which can be accomplished in roughly a week of effort.

Minor Actions:
[] [Minor] Use a major action. Costs three minor actions, gets additional major action.
[] [Minor] Akane Conversation. Attempt to patch things up. Write-in how
[] [Minor] Socialize with the family. Spend time hanging out with Kagome, Inoue, Jiraiya, Keiko, and Noburi as they are available.
[] [Minor] Host a gamenight to bolster social connections. Can be chosen multiple times.
-[] Write-in: Attendees?
[] [Minor] Research topic in the Library. Chosen once for each topic.
-[] Summoning Scrolls
-[] S-Ranked ninja
-[] Write-in
[] [Minor] Write-in. Should be something which takes roughly one day to do.

This way, players could pick what they wanted, and there's a meaningful tradeoff between "just shut up and train" and "do interesting things." There is the potential that this could result in an update which spans multiple parts, but if that's the case, then the QMs can pick which topics which were voted they want to write and divy things up that way, which might be nice?

Training Opportunities:
I suspect we'll have another 4 XP coming from the down day, so the listed totals may increase by 8 (+.8 pangolin). Incorporating that into the sheet presented values gives a month-starting XP total as:
Hazo: 42.5 + 18.5 pangolin
Keiko: 24.5 + 19.0 pangolin
Noburi: 70.5 + 19 pangolin

Over the course of a month, we get somewhere between 3 & 5 XP per day. So 90-150 XP.
Hazo: 132.5 - 192.5 & 19.4 - 20 pangolin
Keiko: 114.5 - 174.5 & 19.9 - 20.5 pangolin
Noburi: 160.5 - 220.5 & 19.9 - 20.5 pangolin

Nobodies pangolin XP will roll into a new point of physique.

Hazo can afford 4 Alertness, minimum, and maybe up to 5
Keiko can afford 3 and maybe up to 5
Noburi can afford 4 and maybe up to 6

Alternatives
  • Hazo should probably get a point or two in Chakra Reserves
  • I think Noburi and Keiko might both benefit from bringing Pantokrator's Hammer up from 1 to 10 for 54 XP... That is an extra tag of versatility on many different kinds of rolls. Wouldn't spend any of the XP if you cant get to 10.
  • Noburi might consider getting his Vampiric Dew up to 40 (20 XP), so that his aspect bonus goes up on it. Low priority.

Having Pandaa do the research with some of his Pangolin friends would be perfectly fine for me. In fact, we should also ask Jiraiya if the toads could help in the search too. Maybe the library even has a technique to track where on our world the bugged summon appears. If that is the case we would have a way to crudely track the Akatsuki which is probably more of a lead than we have at the moment.

@faflec with the best suggestion.
@Dictator4Hire I didn't want to spend more than a couple hours (as in a social break, every once in a while), and having Panda there who can do the investigation (cultural anthropologist in his element, even) and then summarize results while giving us a tour of all the cool bits - perfect.

Mainly, if there is something to find there, I'd like the machine to start churning now, so there is something to act on perhaps at the end of the finals. Ditto for asking about Capybara scroll or other leads.

Something I've rarely seen discussed is that on a personal level, becoming chuunin would do a lot to add to Hazou's actual authority within Leaf. Instead of being at the kiddie-ninja table, he's at the adult ninja table.

All the stuff outside of Leaf you're always talking about? As a chuunin he can propose and lead missions and teams. He can go do stuff without having to be babysat by a senior ninja. It's actually a big deal.

I imagine Panda, or whomever Keiko talked to to get updates on the Capybara-Condor deal, would have similar updates on such things. It would be trivially easy to take an hour or so to discuss with <official> during a visit to her tessera.

I'm pretty sure Hazou and the team are getting a chuunin promotion regardless of tournament outcomes at this point lol. Whether that promotion happens officially at the chuunin exams or separately, I don't know. But I feel like it'd be weird to not promote anyone who made it into the tournament, as that's already something like a 1 in 20 feat?

Relatedly: Given that Summoning (the skill) doesn't do anything as it is, can we have that 120 XP back on Keiko?

Wait a minute. Isn't Keiko supposed to have some sort of Summoning-related buff due to Monomanical? The rulesdoc says she's supposed to get Summoning for half price, so shouldn't she get 120XP back since it doesn't seem to be reflected in her costs?

Edit: This is separate from your suggestion (Summoning skill should be cut) but is instead a note observing a possible mechanical error in her character sheet.

Our crazy plan to reverse-summon Naruto to the Seventh Path for safekeeping. We should get on that ASAP, either before or right after talking with Hana.

Alternatively, make it do something that is a nice to have (skill = max cap on # of summon contracts, or something), and eventually we might be able to get something that is like the Advanced Chakra control stunt I proposed a while back to reduce the cost of her summons across the board with the elevated stat.

@eaglejarl @Velorien @OliWhail ?

Do ninja know about the benefits of rest days for physical training? Iirc it wasn't known until the early 20th century.

I'm thinking it might be a way to get reduced XP cost for physical skills.
