"You guys won't believe this—" he began.

"Be quiet," Nara snapped. Hazō blinked. Nara was not his normal apathetic and sardonic self. His eyes were focused, and there was an unusual immediacy to his voice.

There was a second's pause.
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO-
"I apologise," Nara said more normally. "You interrupted Hinata as she was about to settle a bet between myself and your sister, whose unexpected powers of negotiation have led to me staking more hours on the outcome than may perhaps have been wise."

"Sorry," Hazō said. "Please continue."
Oh you cheeky scoundrel.

The roles Hazō already knew are included in the 100. But note that the 100 includes the non-STL Leaf teams. It's up to you whether you want to vote for them too.
Given their espoused views this update, they'll all be putting our names down - so we should be doing the same.

STL:
  • Ask STL whether or not to list each other's information in ballot.

  • Team Clanless: Coordinate/share information from other Leaf teams (below).
Continue event:
  • Stay near teammates, avoid ambush places.
  • With other non-STL Leaf teams: Fairly trade intel for intel/aid in...
    • ...finding counterparts.
    • ...finding next Event.
    • ...the next Event.
  • Use sweat to find disguised ninjas.
Event Scoring:
  • Check: Nobody's spying on us.
  • Use our available information to score points: Fill out everything we know.
    • Possible exception: STL (see above).
  • Guess name/team/village/role for all ninja we are unsure of. Determine most probable cases using logic.

    • Coordinate with STL:
      • Investigate outside city (East Gate).
      • Chat up lockbox-making blacksmith.
    • Speak with Yakuza.
  • Securely ask Neji re: Bloodrage update.
Contingencies:
  • Confirm undisguised proctors are unHenge'd before following their orders.
  • Watch for table flips. Avoid crowds & prepare to run without giving away ninja status.
    • Lower activity when nearing deadline.
  • If someone publicly releases our names release our list (with STL removed).

tbh, apologizing to Akane after the event would be best. If she brings it up, CCNJ that it would be best to talk about while not surrounded by loads of ninja.

Funny thing about that fight: we played it absolutely fair, yet it happened to come out in the way that I felt made the best narrative.

We designed all the character sheets ahead of time, doing our best to choose numbers appropriately and not consider the previously-built characters when building the next one. We rolled all the dice fair and square. We used what we considered the optimal tactics in each case and applied all relevant CMs, especially skywalkers. The Mist v Leaf part should have been a complete curbstomp for Leaf, but Hiruzen got a disastrous roll to start with and it ended up killing him before anyone could get to him. A few of the Leaf ANBU got unlucky but for the most part that was a crushing victory for their side. Jiraiya and Naruto did fine.

That's the outcome I would have chosen had I been writing purely from narrative.
I haven't read the chapter yet, so I apologize if I'm interrupting everyone's screaming, but I have a question. If I recall correctly, Hiruzen died because Yagura got close, and Hiruzen couldn't open distance fast enough. Isn't that pretty much the best part of skywalkers in combat? Being able to keep your squishy ranged/ninjutsu users out of reach of the enemy melee types? How did Yagura get close to Hiruzen? Some kind of teleportation, flight, or super jump ability? Hiruzen had taken a wound, so did that have something to do with it?

Here's the quote (emphasis mine):
"Sarutobi-sensei engaged Yagura, I engaged Mei, Naruto engaged Zabuza, and our ANBU engaged their jōnin. In the ensuing battle we wiped out their jōnin force as well as Mei and Zabuza." He cleared his throat. "I didn't see what happened exactly, but when I finished with Mei I saw that Naruto had just killed Zabuza so I turned to help Sarutobi-sensei, who had taken a wound in his thigh and was having difficulty opening the distance. Before Naruto or I could reach him, Yagura...." He paused, clearing his throat and wiping at his eyes for a moment. "Yagura killed Sensei.

IIRC Hiruzen botched his first roll, giving him massive negative die. Maybe he and Yagura were closely matched, and his bad roll fucked him for subsequent combat?

Akane knows we spoke carelessly rather than maliciously, so pointing that out doesn't from her perspective make things any better since it doesn't make us less likely to do it again. It also doesn't make things worse, and shows that we understand how and why we hurt her, so we might as well start with it. But we need more. We could make a commitment to her to requesting more intensive OPSEC training from Mari? I'm not sure what else to suggest beyond that other than "let her rant at us and don't try to defend ourself".

Apologize to Akane:
  • <help>

This is a bad time for this, let's leave it until the event is over.

I think what should go in here is something like:

Talk privately with Akane's team
  • Unconditionally offer all of your info as thanks for her help
  • Advise them to identify all Leaf ninja whose details they know during the ballot
  • Does Akane really want to after Urahara, given their history together? (Oblique reference to Cold Stone Killers which still makes me nervous as hell)
  • Head off any drama or recriminations, you'll talk after the event

I don't know what to suggest, either. I do feel that we should address this quickly: having her pissed at us would screw with our ability to coordinate (unless we don't intend to use that?).

Edit: @Roomba Good point, I'll do that instead.

I'm for waiting to apologize AFTER the event, when we've got time in the barracks and can do so privately. We're in the middle of an operation here, so let's not muddle things.

Alright, changed "Apologize to Akane" to "Talk with Team Clanless", and shrunk @Roomba's suggestions for word counting reasons. Could someone check to see if there are any obvious fuckups here?

We should simply apologize, and let her know that we are sorry for breaking OPSEC without consulting her. State that we would never even consider it except in the presence of allies. Let her know that we understand that we overreached and made a bad call here, but we were in the moment and needed to share the information for tactical reasons, which always takes precedence. Assure her that we care about her and her situation (being a clanless ninja without access to secret techniques or bloodlines), and that we will do everything we can to make it up to her once more pressing matters are taken care of.

Be sure to use this exact wording.

@faflec

NOTE: We can probably get away with asking the non STL Leaf nin for Chakra and or a favour (take out Urahara?, find our counterpart?) in addition to the info they may have. We have a lot.

NOTE WELL: We do not know if people are actually drunk or if our mist just sparked a mini-brawl.

NOTE VERY WELL: Make sure any convo with Akane that even hints about Hot Springs are private. In fact maybe don't even bring this up

Yeah, I'm kinda worried about the whole "Hot Springs" thing, considering getting rid of it. Everyone else and especially @Roomba, thoughts?
I mean, we explicitly don't know why Urahara's after Akane, just that he is. That's pretty metagamey.

I agree with asking other Leaf teams for help finding our secret partner.

Yeah, I'm kinda worried about the
While I was most concerned about that due to shitty shorty fallout reasons, i think it would be okay if we just dropped any other explanation except for "Going after him".

I will note that a serious concern is that most ninja aren't actually drunk at all, and so a significant part of our strategy for capitalizing on the chaos is rendered moot. It may very well be the case that the 25% DQ is all we are going to get there from that plan.

Aight then, getting rid of that. Any thoughts on how to convince other Leaf teams into helping us find our counterpart? My plan calls for info trade, but what can we offer beyond that?
We can offer to give them freebies for the matchmaking service.

We can notify them the location of the next event when we figure it out, assuming there is one.

About apologizing to Akane after the event, the problem runs deeper than a stupid opsec slip. Yes, Hazou didn't need to tell Hinata everything this update, but breaking opsec on EM was very much part of the original plan. As @Velorien pointed out, the logistics of getting everyone together into the safe zone made it very difficult to hide the fact that Akane was the one responsible. And I knew this when writing that plan, it even included Hazou saying it to his teammates.

So yes, we very intentionally traded the secret of EM for not getting eliminated out of the exam. I think this is something Hazou will have to explain before apologizing for anything. And then, I guess we'll see where the chips fall.

I think, incidentally, that we as a thread have overestimated Akane's understanding of what it means to be involved with a de facto clan heir. Her proposal to Jiraiya made us think she had thought all of this through and was prepared for the unpleasantness of clan politics. I'm starting to think that's not true and that this whole situation - not just the EM thing but the conversation between clan heirs she was witness to this update - is really opening her eyes to the reality of our situation.

I don't think we should go on a wild goose chase trying to manipulate drunk ninja that may or may not exist.

Maybe remove that and expand a bit more on matchmaking service? We can have people request "dates" with certain qualities (they can describe their counterparts secret role)

@eaglejarl @Velorien @OliWhail Did Akane and co. already get the information Shikamaru gave us?
We can offer to give them freebies for the matchmaking service.

We can notify them the location of the next event when we figure it out, assuming there is one.
Good ideas, I'll implement.
