IIRC, there's a flashback of her self-teaching how to create storage seals during one of the Team Gai filler episodes.
Naruto filler is explicitly barred from being MfD canon or in any way influencing MfD canon or even being mentioned in the GM chat on pain of @Velorien providing a painful number of examples on how painfully stupid filler is. (Chakra ostriches? Really?)

Cool. For clarity, when you say "night light seal" do you mean "seal the proctors are using" or "party trick seal?" Because if it's "seal the proctors are using", then we probably want to research it and use that (since it's both faster to make and more reliable than the party trick seal," Otherwise, we'll just make stupid amounts of party trick seals and business will be booming.
The one the proctors are using, yes.

So there's an appreciable power spike every 15 levels then. Just to confirm, there's no Quick actions at all at levels 1-14?
Correct.

Omake: Exam Time!

"What." said Hazou.

"I thought you'd relish the chance to be chunin."

"Chunin-level." Noburi corrected.

"Which we already are." Kei pointed out.

"So you'll have no problem proving it!"

"Sensei, Why are we actually doing this?" Hazou asked.

Mari slumped. "The hokage wants all Leaf genin teams to compete as a show of force after that almost-war with Mist. Apparently you count. Jiraiya insisted."

"Oh that's just wonderful..." Noburi muttered.

"And of course, we don't want to upset him, so..."

"Yeah. Okay." Hazou replied. "Well, looks like we're going to Leaf!"

-SCENE CHANGE-

"LEE SENPAI!"

"Akane chan?!"

"Akane chan!" she chirped, nodding, and then pointed at her teacher, "Hazou sensei!"

"Hazou sensei." Hazou replied, also nodding, "Lee san?"

"YOSH!"/"YOSH!"/"YOSH!"

"...kill me." Tenten said in a small voice.

"No." Neji said.

Then, after a beat: "Then who'd kill me?"

-SCENE CHANGE-

"BECAUSE I'M NARUTO UZUMAKI, FUTURE HOKAGE! AND I'LL NEVER GIVE UP! BELIEVE IT!"

Ibiki gave Naruto a long measuring look. "Actually, you and your team still fail because you got zero points on the last nine questions."

The hall was filled with laughter.

-SCENE CHANGE-

"Why is an S-ranked missing nin setting up a hat shop in this forest?"

"I don't know, just don't make eye-contact."

-SCENE CHANGE-

"Huh."

"Yeah."

"For an absolute defence, that sand lasted for way shorter than I was expecting."

"Well I suppose that settles that. There's no problem you can't solve with enough explosive seals."

Kagome thumped Hazou on the back. "So. Proud." He wiped away a tear.

This omake is particularly funny in hindsight.

For those who missed it, Tenten is apparently the legendary up-and-comer of their class, outranking Neji "anything the main house can do I can do better" Hyūga.

Which makes a bit of sense, because in canon she's a sealmistress who invented a storage seal variant that stores multiple weapons and unstores them in sequence timed so that she can throw them as projectiles at a steady rhythm.

This is what I recalled as tenten being a sealmistress.

It seems fairly likely that this stage of the exam is an overture from Ren, right? She knows Hazou's a sealmaster, she knows that he'll be able to make a ton more seals than other sealmasters his age. And there's at most like one other Kurosawa sealmaster kid who might benefit from this, since they only raise one per generation. Subtly tilting the scales in our favor to make us look good in the tournament totally seems like a tack she'd take. The international cooperation strategy seems like an especially good idea in this light, as a way of saying "right back atcha".

If you can acquire the Shadow Clone Technique, more power to you. But it's not going to be easy - the Shadow Clone Technique is rare, and the people who know it are generally very powerful and disinclined to share.

Been browsing around some of the very early posts and this came up.

Why haven't we asked Jiraiya to teach us Shadow Clone Technique?

Also, I've been binging the earlier Konoha chapters and man, there's so much good stuff there. In particular, the two Shikaku scenes in Chapter 119 were very well-put-together and great fun to read. A novel made up of chapters like that would definitely become a new favorite of mine (hint hint). Of course, MfD is fun and well-written in general, and there are plenty of other great chapters, but that one in particular just jumped out at me this time around.

Edit: also @OliWhail @eaglejarl it might be a good idea to mention Pantokrator's Communion at the end of chapter 156.3 or beginning of 157.1, because at present I think the telepathy would be coming out of nowhere for archive readers.

The Iron Nerve advantage is actually very small when dealing with seals this simple. You skip the roll for writing them, but someone like Hazou, even without the Iron Nerve, isn't going to be failing that roll anytime soon (if ever, given the way the TN goes down the more you scribe) and Hazou scribes no faster than any other sealsmith. What you say still holds true insofar as sealmasters are relatively rare overall (once a generation is pretty large for a major clan, even) so Hazou would be one of the few Genin attending who can make use of the loophole, but the Iron Nerve doesn't appreciably change things here.

Really, the best thing the Iron Nerve brings to the table in general is that we can make a very large amount of Jiraiya's seals any time we want to. The kinds of things he can make are ridiculous, and since infusion is nigh-instantaneous Jiraiya can crank out Banshee Fuckers as if he spent all day making them without detracting from his jobs as Hokage and Spymaster (who's willing to bet that most of Jiraiya's seals in our loadouts were drawn by Hazou?). We're basically a second Jiraiya who can spend all his time drawing seals, but only when he's nearby enough to infuse them for us. When he's not, we're maybe a step above the average sealmaster depending on how difficult the seal is.

So, once we get back to Leaf, I want to start visiting orphanages (or maybe even while in Mist?), and helping out young clanless ninja.

We can have try teaching young civilians with no ninja-potential to access enough of their chakra to learn sealing.
Next thing you know we're lacing the water of kindergarteners with chakra and then immediately starting chakra control exercises, only to discover we accodentallied a whole orphanage into becoming Wakahisa.

Priority, man. Can't do every two goodie shoe things ever.

We need to figure out the best way to spend our resource and time. I would like to think about sponsoring Shino's clan to see if we can get their glassworker to start cranking out ton of glass products so we can get everyone in Leaf cheap telescopes.

And? Personally, I'd rather read something interesting, as well, and I think Hazou having his own little proteges would be a start to that.

e: Honestly, though, training clanless ninja seems to me to be a very good use of our time.

It means we'll have the chance to introduce them to Hazou's philosophies. We'll become a public figure, which will generate a small amount of political support for Hazou. We'll begin developing a network of capable (by Hazou's own efforts, even) ninja whom owe us favors.

We can teach them sealing!

I love this. Much safer than having our clones do the experimenting for us and there should be a healthy supply of them.

It required a fuck ton of chakra that only Naruto has access to.

Which character IC said this? Having shadow clones be a tailed beasts host jutsu only doesn't sound right to me; it sounds more like something people would say so they don't have to share.

I imagine the answer would be different if we ask again before the tournament stage, having displayed our loyalty and potential to be huge assets to leaf publicly.

OROCHIMARU: As if it would be that simple to achieve a goal of simple universal chakra awakening. You call my experiments monstrous, but how can the lives of unwanted orphans compare in importance to the benefits an increased understanding of chakra could deliver to all of humanity?

I mean, honestly, I'd agree with him, just can't do so publically. Politics, yanno. :p

Yeah, I really want to study the procedure used to make new wakahisa. There's no way it's that easy, but every little bit helps.

Also, I'd want to set up a decent healthcare system before anything major. Like, there's a certain rate of acceptable collateral damage in medical experimentation, but the 80-20 is still basically "yeah, we're not going to accept more than a 1/1000 rate of long term ill effects among the experimental subjects. ... Yes Oro-chan death counts as a long term ill effect."

It occurs to me that Kei could drop and activate an explosive seal against someone that's in melee with her, then use Vacuum Step to get away. This would eat up the enemy combatant's next move/combat actions in exchange for two minor actions, and also get her away from them.

Alternatively, she could stay in place and eat the explosive hit with PTJ, using the fact that she dropped an explosive to guarantee the enemy's movement, and instead throw a held weapon at them.

As I mentioned before, we'll be looking to recruit. You can't be a ninja village without at least one seal master and one medic; next week Inoue will be leading a team to find one of each and bring them back."

This is hilarious looking back at it.

Forget about being called Team Uplift. We are the freaking Village Hidden Up in the Lift.
