A rival tradition of chakra users, demonstrating to all and sundry that you can fight back against ninja without having to be one yourself? Yes, I wonder what might have become of such a thing.

Well, I suppose it makes sense they would be removed. But it just surprises me. I always thought they had more manpower, so their population sizes would be more intimidating.

Well, that was something. I guess we're now missing-missing-nin. (Missing2-nin?)

Without Inoue, Village Hidden in the Swamp is probably screwed, Jiraya or not, since it's going to be much harder to "recruit" a medic and a sealmaster, not to mention a blow to morale from losing four people in one day. Of course, they may well disband as a result and go their sordid separate ways.

Question: Did we ever tell anyone but Inoue about the apex predator hypothesis or the "shelter" we'd encountered? If not, just how certain are we that she had conveyed that information to Shikigami?

Hmm, I would suggest provisionally making all speed into Iron, on the way do a extensive recon to determine if there have been any recent developments in country we want to avoid: occupation by foreign powers, demon rampage, anti ninja cult. Stuff like that.

If for whatever reason Iron is looking particularly unfriendly we cut into Waterfall, climate wise Waterfall looks to be close to the conditions were used to and it's relatively large for a country with a minor hidden Village giving us room to breath.

Training I leave to the experts who have already got plans made up.

Looking at the map I wonder: is Jiro Island owned/controlled/populated by any faction? Is it habitable?

Next thought: what about southern River country, near the border with Fire and near the coast? We might be able to find a new death swamp to tame and call home.

But the overriding thought is this: say we can live sustainably and train and become chuunin-level at least under Inoue's tutelage. Then what?

With a strong handful of jonin, ranks of chuunin, and many genin: we were part of a force that, given time and the acquisition of civilians, could have become a village. But four cannot build a village alone.

I think we should ask Inoue about the cost to that genjutsu, if we can help, and what could be done to bring others with us. If the cost isn't wildly unreasonable, it may be worth her paying it to convince other ninja to leave.

The less force reduction we experience, the better a chance we have of being part of the 'building a new village' story. We can't get other jonin, since she couldn't reliably shut down someone of her own level, but it'd be excellent to have more genin and at least a few chuunin.

But if we really leave with only four, even ten or less, that totally changes the game. We'll have to completely reimagine our strategic objectives. Our opportunities to influence the world will look less like a village and more like a small organization, and the only small organizations that really influence Naruto-verse are fully comprised of Jonin to S-class individuals.

In any case, I'm not sure we should be so much targeting far-away places to re-found a village so much as figuring out where to find other missing-nins trying to hide and convincing them to take up a purposeful existence. Because just surviving as four dead people... well, that's a story waiting to end.

Deathworld does not mean "populated solely by sociopaths".

Thank god. I was beginning to fear you would say "She's an infiltration specialist in a rationalist death world setting. She has fed you nothing but LIIIEEEES," and my suggestion of showing emotional vulnerability to end with the three of us broken and sobbing.

Which is still actually a possibility, I guess. :V

So, we're leaving the swamp! That's exciting and terrifying in equal measure.

So for what it's worth folks, I think you chose right. Well, one of the two right choices.
What's the opinion of Jinchuuriki given this is a rationalverse? Are these demon-wielding powerhouses still treated like shit or are they given the respect and care weapons of their caliber deserve?
Would we do that to you? :p

More seriously, Hazou knows that Yagura is Kage with a biju inside him. He does not know how other villages treat their high value military assets.
@Jackercracks But they still have people living in the country, right? It's not like Siberia or something?
Sure, they've got people there and a minor ninja village. Not much vegetation in the northern half.
Why are there no samurai?
Their honour and inflexibility proved to be fatal in the high stakes game of ninja combat.
Is it in danger of rotting while in the scroll?
No worries there.

Well, that was something. I guess we're now missing-missing-nin. (Missing2-nin?)

Metamissing-nin ?

Question: Did we ever tell anyone but Inoue about the apex predator hypothesis or the "shelter" we'd encountered? If not, just how certain are we that she had conveyed that information to Shikigami?

Yes, you reported it to Shikigami.

Thank god. I was beginning to fear you would say "She's an infiltration specialist in a rationalist death world setting. She has fed you nothing but LIIIEEEES," and my suggestion of showing emotional vulnerability to end with the three of us broken and sobbing.

Which is still actually a possibility probability, I guess. :V.

FTFY

WeIl Jiraiya being in the area sucks big time.

I feel bad for leaving the others behind already. Kinda got emotionally invested in our little group but them's the breaks I guess.

Hopefully Shiki and the other higher-ups do the sensible thing and trek out on their own with their own teams instead of trying to face the incoming Toad Sage.

Anyway, I'm with the others in regards to us becoming less of a burden on Inoue as fast as possible. Getting as strong and competent as we can in some favorably isolated terrain should help a lot.

So I'm guessing our next destination is Iron since it's the safer bet with them being squeezed between so many villages with none being able to get an upper-hand.

Tea is long ways away and there's no telling what we could meet up with braving through fire-country to reach Tea.

Whew, that could have gone a lot worse.
Let's make lists! Resources, Needs, Questions, Goals.

Resources:
  • Us plus Inoue.
  • 1 Storage Scroll with bristles plus meat.
  • Ninja tools, Kunai, Wire, that sort of thing.
  • Whatever Inoue brought and knows
  • Knowledge of the location of Death Swamp
  • Stray thought: If we can get Noburi to learn a technique that uses chakra to produce something that sells for monetary value, and we can provide him with a herd of dumb animals to repeatedly drain halfway, he can produce as much as 25 normal ninja of our skill level can.
Needs:
  • Food
  • Water
  • Shelter
  • More Ninja tools (ours will wear out eventually)
  • Medicine
  • Information

Things to ask Inoue:
  • What supplies does she have on her?
  • How risky is it for us to sneak across boarders?
  • Are there any unaligned cities without ninja patrolling everywhere?
  • Did she make the shelter? Did we get any information on the shelter?
  • Do you have any contacts we would be willing to hide us? And at what cost?

Places to go:
  • Iron
    • Pro: Weak Nina village, large country
    • Pro: Close by, only have to cross one border
    • Con: Resource poor
  • Snow
    • Pro: weaker village
    • Con: We do not know how to survive in the cold.
  • A tiny island in the middle of the ocean
    • Pro: Likely uninhabiited
    • Con: need to find one first
    • Con: probably depressing
  • One of the larger cities
    • Pro: More access to rescources
    • ≈: Easier to hide from normal ninja (I think?), harder to hide from ninja with BS sensor skills (who probably scan the city regularly)
Proposed Tasks:
  • If we kill some more normal animals, we could trade them for rice, go somewhere semi-deserted, cook a bunch of meals, and feed them into the storage scroll so that we have a steady supply of warm, fresh food without risking a fire.
  • We should come up with a recognition code for each other so that we know we are who we say we are. Two codes actually, one that Inoue knows about and one she does not.

Some Proposed Goals:
  • Short Term: We need to find a new place to hide, it needs to have food, water and safety. Since all (known) ninja villages can still crush us, that means we need to stay hidden.
  • Short Term: We need to learn to blend in better. (I think our most important skills right now are, Deception, Stealth, situational awareness and diplomacy)
  • Medium term: We need to find a source of medicine and ninja tools.
  • Medium Term: We need a source of information to alert us to to opportunities and threats.
  • Medium term: We need to get stronger, if we get up to jonin strength, a hidden village might accept us. (risky)
    • Other things that increase our strength: Tools, money, information.
  • Long Term: Get to a point where don't need to constantly worry about dying...somehow.
QM Questions:

@AugSphere @Jackercracks
  • Is Noburi able to draw chakra from the bristles we harvested?
    • If so, how much and how fast?

Looking at the map I wonder: is Jiro Island owned/controlled/populated by any faction? Is it habitable?

To the best of your knowledge the answers are: no, unknown.

Bonus vote!

@Jackercracks: So, EJ, we've got a bunch of plot hooks already and some planned storylines for the future, but we don't actually know what interests the players. What do you think?

EJ: "Become the most powerful ninja EVAAAAR!"

@Jackercracks: Well yes, but aside from that.

EJ: You mean there's more???

@Jackercracks sighs.

EJ: Fine, we can ask.

Okay, folks, what are your long-term goals? This isn't a winner-take all thing, we're looking to get a sense for future reference. Write-ins are encouraged, approval voting is on (so vote for as many as you like), but please do keep it to the voting format. Expectation management: Please note that you are expressing an interest, not a requirement. The authors are not bound by the results of your vote.

Some possibilities to prime the pump:

-[] Learn ALL the jutsu!
-[] Bring technology to the masses!
-[] World peace! And puppies!
-[] Dominion over ALL the peoples! Drive your enemies before you and hear the lamentation of their women!
-[] Upload ALL the peoples!
-[] Equality for civilians! Down with ninja oppression!
-[] Wine, wenches (male and female), and song!
-[] Knowledge is the greatest treasure, I must learn how things came to be this way.
-[] Give me back my mother!

Is Noburi able to draw chakra from the bristles we harvested?
He hasn't had the chance to try. It doesn't... feel quite like the stuff he normally drains. Who knows if it is safe?
Ok, what about Tea: do they have a ninja village and is there anything else we would know about the country? How is their ninja force relative to Hidden Iron?
Nearly all the places have a force of ninja in some form or other, or else they would simply be a province of somewhere else instead of being their own country.

So for what it's worth folks, I think you chose right. Well, one of the two right choices.
Y'know, that's not really telling us anything, since two of the choices were Surrender to Zabuza and Return to Swamp to Foment Rebellion, and the actual controversy was between the other two.

I do think that the specific plan that won did a good job of hedging, since it diluted the responsibility (the real benefit of teamwork) for any choice we did make (including under the Test Hypothesis) and probably improved the team cohesion.

As for where we are going, we should probably still aim for a place with easy access to water, since Noburu needs it to be useful.

[X] Explore the world. Grow as a person. Live a full life.

This is similar to "Knowledge is the greatest treasure", but more comprehensive. It also satisfies my narrative need for character growth.

[X] Sweet ninja battles

Yes please.

[X] Develop some form of immortality to use on ourself and our allies that is easy to use/maintain and is ethical by whatever standards a ninja has. Then produce enough defensive/sealing jutsu to make losing by backdoor means (Shiki Fujin, etc.) irrelevant. After that we can explore whatever plotlines we want and damn the consequences.

Your plan would sap much of the narrative tension from this quest. Bad idea. Creating an "I win" button is great idea in the real world, less so in stories.

@vali Considering how difficult I would expect it to take to make a Naruto-Horcrux, let alone anti-sealing seals, anti-chakra-absorption seals, anti-vaporization seals, anti-Shintenshin seals...I fully expect the entire process to be insanely difficult, otherwise it would have been done by now. It's something to aim for, not something I expect to be done effortlessly.

For more lofty goals
[X] Bring jutsu and technology to the masses
[X] Unify the governments to stop constant warfare

More personal goals
[X] Explore the world. Grow as a person. Live a full life.
[X] Give me back my mother!

The whole ninja system is defunct beyond belief and breeds constant death and destruction. Evening things out and bringing in tech should take away a significant power base from the villages and if we can get the elemental nations to unify themselves (either diplomatically or under our ninja boots) then we can do some good in this world. If that's the way we want to go.

Otherwise I see us exploring and going to save our mom, likely constantly dodging bounty hunters as the price on our head grows more and more. We don't have to be world saving heroes, though I'd like to be.
