"It didn't work," Mari said. Her voice had gotten a hair quieter. "I used Silent Night on him. That's still my best capture technique. But I didn't put my all into it, because I thought he'd have the willpower to resist it and I wanted to save my energy for dodging his counterattack. And he did have the willpower to resist it, but I don't know if I would have trapped him if I'd really given it my all. It's making me think that even my best isn't going to be enough to go up against Akatsuki."
MARI, GENJUTSU: 79 - 12 (Jashin dice) = 67

HIDAN, RESIST: 40 (Resolve) + 20 (Alertness) + 12 (Jashin dice) = 72

MARI: Wow... I suck

"Hazō and Kei are about the same," Noburi, pointing at his clan siblings' chests one by one. "Kei, yours are slightly bigger than Hazō's, of course, but that goes without saying."

"Then, you, Tenten, are slightly bigger than Kei," Noburi said, pointing at Tenten. She blushed.

"Yuno, my dear, you are so strong." Yuno, who had been grabbing Satsuko in confusion (and knowing Yuno, confusion was probably one of the many emotions best resolved with axe murder), paused. "And yours are bigger than all of these poor folk here," he said, gesturing at the Team Uplift members he'd already named.

"And Mari, you know what you are," Noburi said. Mari grinned and squeezed her arms together, causing her cleavage to pop out just a bit more. "Yours are the biggest of all. About as big as Kei and Kagome combined, I think."

Kei paused, confused, as she reared back to throw the kunai that would end her perverted brother's tirade and/or life.

"And then, of course, there's me," Noburi

Allowing for natural chakra fluctuations on the narrative layer...
  • Kagome has CR in the 10s or 20s
  • Hazou and Kei have CR in the 30s
  • Tenten has CR in the mid-to-upper 30s
  • Yuno has CR in the upper 30s, low 40s
  • Mari has CR in the mid-to-upper 40s

@eaglejarl, @Velorien, @Paperclipped

Does this mean that the SC chakra cost required for FOOM (I think it was 80 chakra points, but I'm not certain) is also reduced by 20%?

Edit: this was already answered, sorry. Headaches are a thing, and brain is Swiss. <3

What were the results of Noburi's immediate stabilization roll on Yuno?

Noburi has collected fungi and plants with useful medical properties, good to the tune of a situational Aspect with 1 tag per day, to be used on medical rolls to heal injuries. 30 uses. You will need to remind us that it exists, otherwise no benefit.
Why would we do that?

Noburi doesn't really have time to train up a buff combination stunt with his Vampiric Dew technique (which is twice as good as the bonus they'd get from this) and even if he did we wouldn't spend it on a stunt that lets him combo with these specific cave mushrooms instead of on a stunt that lets him combo with chakra scalpels or JS8.

Aspects aren't inherently buffs.

Going by the text, Kagome < Hazo ~< Kei < Tenten < Yuno < Mari, and Mari is about Kei plus Kagome. Chakra pool is 10xCR. Hazo and Kei both have 1 instance of the ACE stunt on their sheets, Noburi has 2. To us, Hazo and Kei have precisely the same chakra pools, at 315 (30 CR plus 1 ACE) and Noburi has 2,000. Kagome is probably 100-200s, so I concur with Mari having CR in the 40s-50s. Noburi at 2,000 has more than the rest put together, so minus Hazo and Kei, 1400 is more than what Kagome (100s-200s), Tenten (300s), Yuno (~400s), and Mari (400s-500s) have. That leaves more than enough room for variance for the rest.

EDIT: With the Hazo+Mari chakra budget confirmed at the end of the update, Mari is ~535 and Kagome is solidly ~200.

[X] Action Plan: Oh Boy Here I Go Researching Again
Word Count: 299
Intended Duration: 8 Subjective Days (6 Solar)
  • Research
    • Ask Kagome to start working on Banshee Fuckers w/ notes
      • Don't test them in the open, create a soundproofed section of the caves.
      • Use SC to test, (teach him SC)
    • Start with a no-prep DoB cycle of TR130/Icarus. Reroll TR130 for progress, Icarus for safety.
    • Force Domes/Unchained TR150 for the second cycle, full prep, reroll them both for progress.
    • Prep days on the following, Kamikaze, Iron Earth, Great Seal, Space Contracting, ARR, Earth-Element Focus
    • Follow the spoilered chakra budget.
  • Inspire Team Uplift
    • Gather the team with the TR125 in view and give a motivational speech.
    • Some of you may know parts of this, but Naruto ordered Hazou on this mission, and he ordered Hazou and his team to go missing rather than return at Itachi's insistence.
    • We are not traitors to Leaf, we are following our Hokage's orders, and when this is over we will be welcomed home.
    • It's hard to be back in the wilderness knowing that back home things are going to shit, but we will return and we will set things right.
    • You may doubt that we can win against Akatsuki, but look at what we have done so far (point to TR) and I have barely scratched the surface of runes.
    • This will be hard and we may ask you to make sacrifices. But know that we are absolutely confident that we can win. We just need to put in the work.
  • Ask the team about contacting Orochimaru via the Seventh Path at the end of 3 months, and asking him for a intel on Leaf.
    • We were instructed not to make contact, but the information might be critical.
  • Test if chakra water will remain effective outside the grotto on the Seventh Path, if yes, for how long?
  • Study mednin with Noburi

@Sir Stompy Any interest in trying to get Kagome SC again now that we have some OOC idea of his chakra reserves and the discount from the pool?

Alright, let's ask what this 20% discount means in practice, for our Shadow Clone, Rune research, and FOOM efforts. As reference, Hazou has 315 chakra capacity.

In terms of Shadow Clone, the cost to produce only one clone is now (150 + 25) * 0.8 = 140 chakra, leaving Hazou with 175 chakra split two ways into Hazous with 87.5 chakra each. This 87.5 chakra, of course, also benefits from the 20% discount, and can be imagined as an effective 109 chakra per clone.

Looking up at the maximum, Hazou could create a maximum of 9 clones, for a total cost of (150 + 9*25) * 0.8 = 300 chakra, leaving 15 chakra split 10 ways. Since we have Noburi with us, as long as sufficient chakra exists among the party we can refill any and all of these Hazous as we please.

But what does this mean for rune research? As a refresher, WoG says that we regen enough chakra during the earthshaping process to waive the costs of infusion, so the only thing we need to measure is the cost of Earthshaping itself. I cannot for the life of me remember whether we need to cast it at max Effect for runecrafting or not, but looking at a previous effortpost I have the following numbers: 332 chakra if cast at Effect 6, and 240 chakra if cast at Effect 4. If you apply the 20% discount to those you get 266 or 192 chakra respectively.

Our primary research pipeline revolves around two Hazous doing DoB rune research. To sustain just this, we need to create one clone (140 chakra, leaving each Hazou with 87.5) and then each Hazou needs to do a full Earthshaping run (192-266 chakra). To cover the cap, after casting Shadow Clone each Hazou will need a refill of 105-179 chakra, demanding 210-358 external chakra. This is readily doable even from just Mari's reserves.

But our ideal research pipeline involves 3-4 research tracks, allowing us to pursue unboosted projects like chuunin-tier seals or very easy runes. First, let's ask how much more it costs to run three clones instead of one, if we presume the extra two are doing seal research (no chakra cost): the initial Shadow Clone cost is (150 + 3*25) * 0.8 = 180, leaving Hazou with 135 chakra split four ways. However, we immediately rebalance Hazou's chakra from the seal-Hazous to the rune-Hazous, so it's only really split two ways, leaving the two rune-Hazous with 67 chakra each, about 20 less than our two-track example. This means we need 40 more chakra to run this set, demanding instead a total of 250-398 external chakra. Again, still easily covered by just Mari's reserves.

I'd broadly advise against scheduling non-DoB runes for the same day as DoB runes, since our prep days for the DoB runes have a lot more free chakra floating around and thus this kind of scheduling does not strain our metrics, but if we do suppose that Hazou wants to infuse three runes in one day, here's how the math works out (I'll also assume that a fourth Hazou is also here doing paper research). With three runes to infuse, we need to cover a total chakra budget of 576-798 chakra, of which we have 135 available, meaning the Hazou collective needs to source 441-663 external chakra. This is the point where we probably need to lean on the rest of the team for more chakra budget.

(Four runes all in one go means 633-929 external chakra, but please, just schedule the non-DoB runes for a different day than the DoB runes. I don't think you even get the same number of prep days if you aren't using DoB!)

So, that is to say, it's safe to say that we can cover our research budget, comfortably so if we don't infuse more than two runes per day. Now, what about FOOM?

The cost of a FOOM block has gone down from 80 chakra to 64, but that's still quite a lot if we want to start stacking it. Given Noburi rebalancing, I'm going to skip the annoying part of the math and just say that each extra Hazou adds 20 chakra to the amount we have to externally source (25 * 0.8). Here's the approximate FOOM milestones:
  • 1 FOOM Hazou: 20 + (3 * 64) = 212 chakra, spending 3 blocks for a 1.3x multiplier
  • 2 FOOM Hazous: 212 * 2 = 424 chakra, spending 6 blocks for a 1.6x multiplier
  • 3 FOOM Hazous: 212 * 3 = 636 chakra, spending 9 blocks for a 1.9x multiplier
  • 4 FOOM Hazous: 212 * 4 = 848 chakra, spending 12 blocks for a 2.2x multiplier
  • 5 FOOM Hazous: 212 * 5 = 1060 chakra, spending 15 blocks for a 2.5x multiplier
I stop at five clones because, if we're running two DoB tracks, that takes us all the way up to 19/19 FOOM blocks, research requiring 4 blocks instead of 3. If we want to full-tilt, max throttle, two DoB tracks plus five FOOM clones, we need to source 1270-1418 external chakra for that day. If we scrape together all the chakra in the team we might be able to achieve that, but we'd be asking them to sacrifice their own daily chakra to let us run full FOOM. If we only take a portion of their daily chakra, and all of Mari's, we can probably sustain 2 or 3 FOOM clones without much issue. Maybe 4 if there are no rune infusions that day.

(We will need to have a conversation about how yes, actually, Hazou should get all the FOOM chakra, because he's leveling the win-the-mission stat and the rest of you aren't going to get stronger fast enough to matter. In politer terms, of course, but Mari wasn't wrong when she spoke about the strategic situation this chapter. I think it's only really Kei that would lose out from this, but I'm going to stress that I would not ask so much chakra from Kei that she can't afford to summon Snowflake, that'd just be barbaric.)

What does this all mean in practice? Bookkeeping is a headache, so what we'll want to do is cover this topic one time to figure out how much chakra we can source from just Team Uplift, figure out how much FOOM that translates to based on how many rune infusions we do that day, and pin that chart on a wall so we don't have to think about it again.

...Actually, I'll just make that cheat sheet now, may as well:
0 FOOM clones (x1.0)1 FOOM clone (x1.3)2 FOOM clones (x1.6)3 FOOM clones (x1.9)4 FOOM clones (x2.2)5 FOOM clones (x2.5)
0 RunesNone (175 excess)37249461673885
1 Rune913035157279391151
2 Runes35857078299412061418
(Using the Effect 6 ES numbers here, because I think you can't use less than that, and I want the numbers to be simple here. I'm also assuming we're running two tracks of research even on the "0 Runes" or "1 Rune" rows, since we'd still be doing prep days)

Once we figure out how much external chakra we can source, just refer to this table to see how much FOOM that lets us sustain. And, ugh, I think it's not as easy as just dividing all this by 0.8 to get the same cheat cheet for no chakra discount, so gimme a sec to make that one too.
0 FOOM clones (x1.01 FOOM clone (x1.3)2 FOOM clones (x1.6)3 FOOM clones (x1.9)4 FOOM clones (x2.2)5 FOOM clones (x2.5)
0 RunesNone (140 excess)1253906559201185
1 Rune19245772298712521517
2 Runes5247891054131915841849

Again, just figure out how much chakra we can externally source, figure out how much FOOM that translates to for each row, and pin that to the wall somewhere so we don't have to worry about the math again. This should be all we need to not only plan out our research but also our FOOM in sufficient detail to actually get this research mission cooking.

Edit: scratch most of this, reread the end of the chapter and had a conversation with Stompy and realized that the clones don't benefit from the boost at all, so only Hazou Prime gets any benefits and saves, like, maybe a hundred chakra or so on a rune infusion day. I'd just go with citing the latter table then and let the water effect run out, tbh.

Through the thin privacy screen that Kei had provided, Hazō saw the rising outlines of Yuno and Satsuko relax back against the edge of the pool.
*Intense Keiko flashbacks*

Since you apparently cracked the power of spacetime manipulation while Tsunade taught me moderately-advanced medicine, what do you gotta worry about that for? Just make more.
Slight quibble: Noburi shouldn't know that space and time are connected. In fact, are space and time connected in the MfD-verse?

"And then what happens? I show up on day three of training to scrunch up my chakra in whatever esoteric way only they understand and tell the Toad Sages, 'Actually no, I just betrayed the village – yeah, my equivalent of the Toad Clan on the Human Path – yeah, the same one Jiraiya dedicated his whole life to and died for – yeah, the loyalty to which is the reason I gave for picking Tsunade over you the first time – on Hazō's orders. Sorry, gotta save all my time, stamina, and chakra for running away from Leaf on the Human Path for the next who-knows how long. Sorry!' You've heard Jiraiya say it, you've heard Naruto say it, you've heard me say it, and you've seen it yourself. They're cantankerous and prideful. How do you think they took it?"
Ouch. Hadn't thought of that at all.

"Actually, not nearly that bad," Noburi said. "I don't like the taste of toenail nearly as much as you do, so I put it much more gently than that.
Wait... is he referencing "Open Mouth, Insert Foot"?

"And then, of course, there's me," Noburi said, grinning widely and thumbing at himself. "I'm the biggest of all, and it's not even close. Mine are bigger than everyone else's combined."
At this point I realized that he was talking about reserves. That was funny tho.

"I had also initially inferred he was referring to breast size," Kei replied. "However, his final line has caused me to conclude he is instead referring to egos. Nonetheless, with his voyeuristic confession, I will proceed with termination." She pulled back to throw again.
Why do Yuno and Kei get so violent!? smh.

He checked, but none of the other scratches he could feel seemed like they were nearly as deep as the ones in the middle, so he smoothed them away, also detaching the lichens growing from the rock overhead. What remained was a square with four lines dividing it into even pieces, two vertical and horizontal, and two more along the diagonals. Like the character for a rice paddy, but crossed out.
Umm, Rice missing-nin?

Ah, whatever, it was probably hundreds of years old. What did it matter anyway?
Nope. This attitude right here gets people killed.

We should probably bring the fact that she might have just lost because of Jashin-luck to her attention. @Sir Stompy?

My god... it's the Star of Fëanor.
I lol'ed. Thanks. That would be really funny.

I was joking, but the more I think about it, the more sense it makes. Fëanor, like the Sage (as far as we can tell) was an unparalleled genius who also had surprisingly bad judgement at times. The Sage had seven companions, and Fëanor had seven sons...

One of those sons was Caranthir, but he had another name: Morifinwë.

[X] Ask Kei if the founder of her bloodline was Morifinwë Carnistir, prince of the Noldor

As far as ninja know, yes. Spacetime jutsu is the common term iirc. Blame the fucking Sage or something, idk.
Oh whoops, I forgot about those.

What's the worst that can happen?

On further reflection, I don't like the idea of telling the team that this mission is a black op. We can tell them that Naruto can claim that it was a black op when we get back during an EJ update.

Hmm... could the tenfold abomination be Melkor? If so, are the Valar useless in MfD?
