"Wall of Gone-ketsu"

Jiraiya Gouketsu
Done in by paperwork

This is fantastically clever, and I wholeheartedly approve. We should commission a memorial wall and place it in a nice little meditation garden in the compound. The courtyard, or backyard if there's no courtyard. We could also commission a nice statue of Jiraiya. (Depicting him suffocating under a legion of attractive fangirls would be optional.) I expect the cost would be fairly insignificant compared to available clan funds, and it's the least we can do to honor Jiraiya and bring the clan together.

Under the statue we could have a more serious epitaph to make those who would prefer a serious memorial happy, something like:

Jiraiya Gouketsu
Beloved father, husband, founder, author, and friend,
he gave his life to save us all.

We should probably have a private memorial service for him, too. We could invite the people he was close to. I imagine the village will have an official affair as well, but it will probably be fairly impersonal. At the private gathering we can unveil the memorial wall and get a good bittersweet chuckle out of everyone, and then reveal the statue.

Aside from the emotional importance of everyone getting a chance to say goodbye, it will also be a chance to build bonds in the political coalition we need to bring together to carry on Jiraiya's work.

We could also quietly commission a marker on the village outskirts honoring Orochimaru's sacrifice. He died for the village and was pardoned at the end, after all. It's not something we need to bring attention to, but...he probably deserves it, and I'm sure Tsunade will appreciate the gesture. The marker doesn't need to make him out to be any sort of hero, because he wasn't, but his last act deserves some sort of recognition.

For the actual memorial of the Battle of the Gods, I wanted a giant granite wall with masterwork carved names and artistic designs, on an island in the middle of a koi pond on which there is an ever-burning 1enchanted flame in the middle of a giant brazier, symbolizing the Will of Fire passed on by those who have already gone forward into the darkness of the Pure Land.

A guy can dream.

1. Figure it out with Sealing. Make it happen!

I like it! It sounds like the sort of thing the village might do as a collaborative effort and public memorial. As a bonus, memorializing the efforts of all the other village ninja is a good way to remind people that other villages don't have to be enemies. We could also improve relations by inviting the other villages who participated in the battle to send people to the unveiling ceremony. I expect even hardliners might be a bit touched.

If we can get Naruto in contact with the other jinchuuriki I'm pretty sure that'd do a fair bit to keep the peace between the nations. Maybe create a second, international memorial somewhere central (Iron, Hot Springs, etc.), and a truce so that everyone can show up and commensurate over their losses?

Maybe it's better to just do it during the chunin exam?

I just caught up again. It looks like we're going to find out about Akane soon. Do we have a secure method of contacting Ami? Coming up with a plan to kill Aunt Sunny without it being traced back to us sounds like a good use of that favor.

Can you remove that vote? I can't find your action plan for some reason.
Wait, seriously? Right, done.

Voting for this one because I think barging into the tower and trying to grab the snake scroll is too likely to have serious political consequences. I think we're better off making our arguments for it in council. We don't need it so horribly badly that it's worth taking a huge risk for. Hazou would be a pretty bad summoner for a long time because of his poor reserves anyway, and the 7th path politics could get...really complicated, since the snakes aren't allied with the toads and pangolins. If they're hostile there's a possibility they could even kill Hazou rather than accept him as a summoner.

WTF?

[X] Action Plan: Speaking of Unity

Word count: 274
  • Adoption:
    • If others agree, immediately make offers, contingent on Naruto's future approval, to:
      • Akane (meet her together).
      • Tenten (send only Keiko).
    • Discuss Lee:
      • He's talented, and adrift after Gai's death.
      • His personality could be mitigated to minimize friction (soundproofing, house rules...).
    • Maybe consider inter-village adoption (Doigama, Kato...)?
  • Family matters:
    • Mari: Update her. What's she been doing lately?
    • Kagome:
      • Give him Jiraiya's sealing notes.
        • Check/remove notes on Kagome's private seals beforehand.
      • Is he willing to teach adoptees sealling?
    • Noburi: Schedule an appointment with Kabuto to check bloodline interactions with SC/Summoning.
      • Yes, the Toad Scroll should be his.
      • You can also investigate him on adoption.
    • Keiko: Pangolins
      • Possible solutions for Skytower-deal concerns:
        • Selling seals using Toad intermediaries.
        • Designate the scroll as a clan treasure, that directly belongs to the Gouketsu.
      • Offer them a list of seals (OPSEC-sanitized!). Trade them for:
        • Valuables.
        • Jutsu, especially conquered nations' (Condors' Space-Time Ninjutsu).
        • Improved treatment of conquered nations.
      • Who owns the Hyena/Leopard scrolls? Could we acquire those?
      • Pangolin-Snake-Toad Alliance advocation: See below.
  • Gather information on Akatsuki
    • Noburi: Visit the Tower, grab their profiles.
    • Kagome: Summarize their book.
  • Contact the Snakes.
    • Learn about their culture/predispositions from Summons and Jiraiya's notes.
    • Message them via Pangolins.
      • Send Jiraiya's letter to Orochimaru. (Orochimaru could've survived/faked his death.)
      • Ask whether Orochimaru left them a will. Jiraiya wrote a pardon for him and we want his wishes carried out.
    • Idea: Keiko advocates a Pangolin-Snake-Toad alliance conditional on the Snakes backing a Gouketsu Summoner.
      • The alliance, with preexisting allies, would be unstoppable, especially with our seals.
      • Bonus: Inroads with Snakes/Toads gives us additional avenues to pressure Pangolins to changing conquered clans' treatment.

Is Tsunade likely to smash us to bit if we took the scroll via summon diplomacy?

So...to be clear, you are concerned about offending the Snakes, correct?
No, I'm concerned about offending the Pangolins and Toads by proposing diplomacy with the Snakes, in case they're mortal enemies or something.

Although I wouldn't want to offend the Snakes either.

Snakes do eat toads in the wild, so...you know, that doesn't bode well.

Typo, missing space.
Fixed, thanks. (Although, as always, the amazashing @Squiddlebuddy beat you to it. :> )

I'm still super sour about the battle results being randomized, honestly. It killed so many great plot threads and characters, while letting useless ones live.
Combat in MfD is always randomized.

And no, I'm not happy about the results either. I loved writing Jiraiya; he was probably my second favorite character after Kagome, and having him die is almost physically painful for me. I'm also bummed that Orochimaru died, although we never actually got to interact with him. My preferred outcome was:

Jiraiya lives
Orochimaru lives
Hiashi lives
Literally everyone else dies, including Ren, the other 3 Kage, and Tsunade.
As actually happened, Pain resurrects Akatsuki and the jinchūriki are sent home. (NB: Gaara, Yagura, and the 2-Tails all died before the attack force got there.)

This would have meant:
  • The jōnin and senior chūnin population of Mist, Sand, and Leaf are almost completely depleted and all of their S-rankers gone aside from J, O, and Naruto.
  • The jōnin/chūnin/S-rank population of Rock and Cloud are NOT depleted, but they don't know about the battle yet.
  • Everyone except Leaf has lost their Kage and is scrambling for new leadership
  • Leaf still has Hokage Jiraiya, but his trial period is over, Hiashi is gunning for him, and Shikaku isn't there to back him up.
  • Most or all of the Noble Clans have lost their Heads, so they have inexperienced replacements, making them easy targets for Hiashi's manipulations.
  • Jiraiya needs the S-rank firepower, so he wants to bring Orochimaru in. Doing so will make him vulnerable to Hiashi.
  • Tsunade is dead, so the Senju vote on the council is gone, making the Gōketsu situation that much more precarious and requiring horse trading about who gets the Slug scroll.
We came so close. :<

Wouldn't leaf get all the 6 jinchurikii tho?

Plus Jiraiya can go 'accidentally' Hiashi if he really needs to.

The other villages aren't going to let any village have that many jinchurikii.

I forget, have there been noises in character about pitching Noburi for an apprenticeship to Tsunade? Things are too busy right now, but perhaps at some point?

Also, what happened to the other genin who were in Naruto's squad when it was ambushed? Was it Sasuke and Sakura as in canon, or someone else? Did they all escape? I know Sasuke's still alive, but I can't recall ever hearing about Sakura in MfD.

Whoever Naruto's genin friends are, he might want them involved in everything. They could make useful allies and bridges to political relations with their clans.

Wait...the only Leaf clan heads present at the battle were Hyuga, Goketsu, ISC, and Sarutobi, but there are...what, 17 Clans in Konoha? Do most of those just not count as "Noble" clans or something?

Edit: And Senju/Uzumaki, but I'm a Hyuga.

Nope.

They weren't there on the mission. Check chapter 124.

She's been onscreen quite a bit. Search for 'Sakura' in posts by 'eaglejarl, Velorien, OliWhail' with minimum word length 1000.

Robble, robble, most clans instead of all. Fooey.

Also, there's more than 17 clans. Only 17 of them get votes.
