Problem with picking the lock normally (and not cheating with Zephyr's or something) is that it will take time. Do we have that long since we still need to search the room?

Also, if there's someone in the room, Mari would have to genjutsu them before we open the window. What if the blinds are covered or something similar?

"So while Noburi and I keep them distracted up front, sensei and Keiko will sneak in through the bedroom window and--"

Inoue's hand shot up. "Oooh, ooh, Criminal Mastermind Sir? How do we get through the locked window?"

Hazou froze, flummoxed. "Um...you pick the lock?"

Inoue gave an exaggerated "what?!" expression. "How do I do that?"

"But...you're a jonin," Hazou said, floundering. "A ninja. And a jonin. You know how to pick locks...."

"Shikigami didn't pick locks," Inoue said. "The Mizukaze doesn't pick locks."

"But...you're an infiltration specialist," Hazou said. This conversation really was getting away from him.

Inoue laughed. "Sweetie, I'm a grifter, not a thief. The target opens the door for me. I have no more idea how to pick locks than how to bake a cake."
Ffs son, we didn't ask for extra time to come up with something better than a half baked plan for you to embarrass yourself (and us) by proposing a half baked plan like that.

Okay. Fine.

What I want to do this very night: send Mari and co to check things out.

She along with Akane, Keiko and, say, Hazou, sneak into a different suite (one that's not occupied, and not close to J's. On the other side of the buildings? I'd love a floor plan for this thing... Which floor are they on anyway? Out of how many? @eaglejarl ?)

Probably move in pairs.

Akane picks the lock on the window (we time her) those are probably same everywhere. If J carries different window frames to install wherever he goes, I quit.

Keiko and Mari get in to get familiar with navigating the layout in the dark, in case we decide to go for a night break-in.

That done, we sneak out, close the window behind us, then go to check J's suit. Not touching anything, not messing with J's room.

Just observe for a while, see if we spot anyone keeping an eye on intruders from outside. The mysterious third genin maybe? It would be convenient for them to switch personas like that, with any two staying in and one sneaking out >_>
@Twofold made me paranoid.

If we don't see anyone, investigate the window to servants room. Can we see inside at all or is it completely covered? Does he lock look the same? Any visible traps? Any visible seals? Hazou will draw those later for Kagome to examine.

Can we see/hear inhabitants at all?

Once we do this stake-out we can decide if we want to try a break in.

One night of sneaking for new info. Opinions?

FakeE:
Re genjutsu before opening the window: we could tap on the glass or something, then Mari catches whoever comes to investigate.

You could still do something like:

Where the brown rectangles have just support seals, the orange rectangles have central seals and the overlapping black rectangles are sets of Five Seal Barrier seals. You can expand this design to support an arbitrarily large area as long as you can support the outermost ring, which we can do by building a frame off the immovable parts. It wouldn't be much more work then building a floor already was.
See also the design in my sig :)

@Velorien You keep quoting other people as being me. Here is what I'm seeing:

@Velorien Doing some quick googling: to have n equidistant points requires n-1 dimensions so 4 equidistant points would need to be arranged in a pyramid rather than on the same plane.
I think my visualisation skills suck. What I was trying to say is that the seal arrangement is with the four support seals as corners of a square, and the primary seal is at the square's centre. (which on reflection would have been a lot simpler to say)

I have kinda given up the hope that Hazou would ever seem competent. He is Mr. Mew for life.

You are very much welcome.

So Mari doing genjutsu on the windowsill seems like a bad idea. Other alternatives would be drilling a hole for a line of sight from an adjacent room, but a careful observer could notice that. We would have to test it in an empty suite.

Other option would be to have Mari in the door team, this would lead to the following scenarios:
  1. 2 people come to the door:
    • Window team gets to search the room
    • Nobby gets to do the splash-water-test-chakra thing
  2. 1 person comes to the door:
    • Mari gets to genjutsu him and we can do a bodysearch
    • Nobby gets to do the splash-water-test-chakra thing
Now, if Hazou goes with the window team they will also have the sealing angle covered. He currently has effective Stealth 9, so we could spend 9 XP to get it 10, same as Keiko.

I don't really like the idea of having the next update be so preparatory after we got extra time for planning, but I suppose that's better than not being prepared.*

In addition to visual examination, we could also have Nobby check the target window for chakra shenanigans with VD.

*EDIT: Or if we are really jonesing for ninja action, we could start the plan with the preparatory things and then put the caper itself behind conditionals...it would make for a pretty long plan though.

We could just observe and only act if we see a golden opportunity. Otherwise just give up the mission. We don't really need it.

I know, right? It's like Hazou used up all his coolness points on beating those three genin.

That's what I'm hoping to see, or failing that, just the trial run.

On that note, Mari at the door is an interesting idea. Might cost us the chance to search the room, but possibly better that using genjutsu from outside.

We could just observe and only act if we see a golden opportunity.
We have to make opportunities. That kind of thing doesn't just happen.

We only have three days. Surely ice hauling can wait that long >_> Even if we end up playing it safe, learning what we can is worth it, and that includes infiltration training.

I'd rather we mess up now than when we pursue our own interests.

So, for the proposed specializations, I started with @eaglejarl's description of an acceptable version of Deal Making here, then applied the same algorithm (drop the 2*attribute) to Operational Security, and then just made stuff up for Lockpicking since Mechanical Aptitude is honestly already pretty cheap.

Also, these are the only ones I've specced out as a proposal. See this list from @OliWhail for other specialization ideas.

Proposed skill specializations:
Deal Making - Diplomacy
  • 3 * Manipulation
  • 3 * Composure
  • Negotiate mutually agreeable agreements between willing parties under calm conditions
Operational Security - Deception
  • 3 * Presence
  • 3 * Composure
  • Keep track of and use backstory details when appropriate; prevent inappropriate displays of emotion and physical reactions
  • This skill would not let you convincingly display an emotion that you don't feel. It just lets you not show surprise or glance at Mari when you hear one of the VHitM clans is named Inoue, or show disgust/anger at some lordling who doesn't get that commoners are human too.
Lockpicking - Mechanical Aptitude
  • 6 * Dexterity
  • 6 * Wits
  • Use tools to open a lock that would otherwise require a key.
  • This skill provides no ability to prevent the triggering of a trap attached to the lock.

Proposed skill specialization mechanics:
Points purchased in a primary skill, such as Diplomacy, automatically include the same same rank of skill in all of its specializations. At any time, a character can buy the next point of a specialization for the normal skill cost simply by purchasing it instead of the primary skill, say, paying 7 XP for Deal Making while leaving Diplomacy at 6. A character may only have one specialized skill at a higher level than its primary skill for that specific primary. A character who wants to be able to make deals and be charming with 7 dice needs to level Diplomacy to 7.

When a character has a specialization off a primary skill, points in the primary skill may be purchased (once the attribute requirements are met) for half price. This represents the inefficiency of learning the skill piecemeal rather than all together. If the primary skill is ever raised to the same skill rank as the specialized skill, then the character no longer has a specialization for that skill, pays full price for the primary, and may select a different specialization for future XP expenditures off that primary skill.

[X] Action plan: Trial Run

In which we check out the local night scene.

After dark Mari, Akane, Keiko, and Hazou, sneak into a different suite (one that's not occupied, and not close to Joutaro's)
Avoid patrols, stick to cover.
Akane picks the lock on the window (we time her)
All get in to get familiar with navigating the layout in the dark, in case we decide to go for a night break-in.

That done, we sneak out, close the window behind us, then go to check J's suit. Not touching anything, not messing with J's room.
Just observe for a while, see if we spot anyone keeping an eye on intruders from outside.
If we don't see anyone, investigate the suit windows, servants' room in particular. Can we see inside at all or is it completely covered? Does the lock look the same? Any visible traps? Any visible seals? Hazou will draw those later for Kagome to examine.
Can we see/hear inhabitants at all?
Any other useful info?

Once we do this stake-out we can decide if we want to try a break in and how we do it.

Contingency:
Wear a disguise that hides our face.
If spotted, break into pairs and run.
???

Honestly not sure what to put here. Guards/genin should be easy to avoid. Worst case, we're spotted by J's team. That's what the disguise is for. I don't think they will pursue, but they might raise the alarm. If they do, well, we're better at running away than sneaking.

It should not come to that, as long we look, not touch.

Sorry this is short, I want to make a longer one that includes the proper break in with conditionals, but typing this out was bad enough. Maybe in a few hours?

I'd rather someone else do it, but that's kinda unfair to ask for.

What's wrong with cheating, and using Zephyr's?

Mari knows the jutsu and doesn't think she can open the window. Meaning relying on Zephyr for this probably won't work.

@Muer'ci Nice plan...shame if something were to happen to it.

According to the last update, we have three days to go. I think it's safe to assume that the proper prep work is going to take the whole day. (@eaglejarl @Velorien Or what time is it now for Hazou? If it's evening we could do some of these checks during the night before morning comes like Mue'ci wants and still have 3 days in to the deadline?)

I'll turn this into an actual plan once I get some feedback, namely:
  1. What else could we plausible achieve during this day?
  2. Anything else we need to check from the other suite, the windows or from Honami?
  3. What contingencies should we have in place?
  4. Is the party member placement ok?
  5. What did I miss? (I 100% definitely missed something, if you can't spot anything just look harder)

[] Proto-Plan: Scaredy-Cat Burglars

Spend the day preparing to break into Joutaro's room.

Goals:
  1. Don't get caught
  2. Prepare to break in to Joutaro's suite
  3. Gather information about Joutaro's party
Method:
  1. Gather information on Joutaro's party from Honami
    • Who do they claim to be?
    • Have they been here before?
    • Where do they spend their time?
    • What do they eat and when?
    • Other impressions the employees have gathered?
  2. Have Mari keep a discreet eye on Joutaro and people he interacts with
    • Let Mari do her thing
  3. Akane, Keiko and Hazou inspect one of the suite's similar to Joutaro's
    • Only break in if the suite is unoccupied, or the residents are soundly asleep (if we can't sneak past civilians, we won't sneak past potential ninjas)
    • Inspect the suite
      • Check how fast Akane can pick the lock in the window or anywhere else relevant
      • Check the windows, walls ceilings and the floor, how easy would it be to make a spy hole?
        • If feasible, make few and see how easy they are to spot
      • Check how feasible it's to eavesdrop what's going on in the suite
      • Make sure we can navigate the layout in the dark
      • Make a note the line of sights inside the suite and out of it, from where could we kawarimi to where? Any good spots outside for a kawarimi log?
  4. Noburi, Keiko and Hazou sneak outside Joutaro's suite and inspect the windows
    • Do this when it's dark and Joutaro is not present
    • Observe if there is anyone keeping a special eye on the suite
    • Examine the windows, any changes from the previous suite? Traps? Seals?
    • If feasible, see if Noburi's VD reacts to the windows
    • Is there any way to peek into the suite?
Contingencies:
  1. Map out escape routes out the resort
  2. Everyone henge
    • Wear wind-style headscarfs under the henge that cover our hair and facial features

Please put this into a plan. I would love to write the scene where Hazō proposes it.
I think it sounds like a good omake, but until Noburi is good enough to try cloning I don't want to mention it IC.
Inoue laughed. "Sweetie, I'm a grifter, not a thief. The target opens the door for me. I have no more idea how to pick locks than how to bake a cake."
...Inoue doesn't know how to make cake? :wtf:

We should totally start carrying window frames in storage scrolls to install wherever we go.

You keep asking to point out typos. There's one :V

Update ends with Noburi in the baths. Post-update stuff like meeting dogs is said to have happened earlier. I estimate it's late afternoon/evening right now, so a night event should absolutely be feasible. Unless our team needs their beauty sleep?

Misc:
The suite J stays in is one of three similar ones, the other two are empty.

I still want to know how bathrooms work here, because staying for days in a room with chamber pots.. Yeah they better have an option to crack that window open.

Maybe we really should go through J's laundry, if he sent any cloths for cleaning.

Get info from Honami on inner workings of the resort. When is cleaning done, food offered. Maybe something else?

I don't want to take Noburi sneaking. I don't think this is the right time to experiment with how VD interacts w/foreign chakra.

Go you! Let us know when you publish it.

Thanks! It'll probably be a few weeks (though I won't be quite this occupied for the whole while) before I publish anything. I wanna have the first few chapters sorted out and make sure there's no holes in it before I start releasing chapters. I'll also probably revise it several times, as this is the first time I've written anything seriously since I was like 12, excepting the omake earlier. For reference, it's going to be an Undertale fanfic (because I am trash for that game).

With regards to current events, though, I had a thought... this would be painfully awkward for Hazou to ask Mari, but he should find out how comfortable she is with feigning being sent as a courtesan for them. That is a... very easy way to get them alone for genjutsu.

We should just ask Mari if she has ever done a mission like this before. She generally reluctant to volunteer.

Does anyone else find it odd that Inoue does not know how to bake a cake? I mean the way to a man's heart is though his stomach. Or is she saying that she does know how to pick locks?
