On the note of Shadowrun, @OliWhail I'm going to ask the people I used to run with for advice on this one, hopefully I'll get some good ideas from them!
Nice. Too bad there's no matrix to look things up on, eh? (Not yet! Growth mindset.)

I know what my crew would have done - I take over every device on the property so nobody can call the Knights, mage puts a physical mask on the face who then gets chummy with the target and sleight-of-hands the scroll, mage and street sam stand by with high-force spirits and heavy artillery for when shit inevitably hits the fan...

Actually, that's pretty close to the elements of the plan we'd already discussed. Get the guard dogs used to us/compromise the staff, Mari makes friends (possibly with Hazou as close support - pretend to be her son? Little brother?), prepare explosive exit routes with the whole team on standby.

Also PMYF is a hilarious rapid exit strategy :D

I want to test out if we can set up something sufficiently massive to swap with for everyone in the party, sufficiently durable to survive sealing, and sufficiently fragile NOT to survive a fall from whatever height. The idea is one-use Substitution targets to make following us difficult for other ninja.

e: Also, what techniques does Mari know? And... uh, does Kagome know ANY ninjutsu? (sneaky edit) Beyond the basic ones, that is.

Huh. Can we...place a variant Force Wall seal on a Kunai in order to give it an insanely razor sharp edge? Would such a kunai be able to chop through other kunai/swords/etc.? Because that would be a cool trump seal for lethal weapons fights

That's an idea someone came up with, yeah. Delayed force wall that extends out from a shuriken creating a spinning wall of death.

I really like this idea.

It is awesomely gruesome, gory, and no poison immunity will save the victim.

Unfortunately, default Force Wall won't form if there are obstacles in ti's way, so we will probably need some additional research to achieve this.
If Kagome will let us play with space seals, it could always open a tiny black hole inside of them. That would probably be cleaner too.

Given that it would be consumed for use, it would mostly be for assassinations. So a 'body deleter' would make more sense that a 'chest-burster wall'.

If we set it up right it'll take the whole body, and leave no evidence.

I mean, we could make it a small implosion seal too. Pretty much anything would work.

This is a bad idea. Beyond the event horizon black holes do not have inherently more gravitational force than the mass that constitutes them would at the same distance. I'm not sure what this seal would do, a best case is that it sort of drops through the targets stomach and starts burrowing its way to the centre of the earth. A worst is that the first thing the black hole eats is its own seal and we either accidentally the world or just give the target indigestion.

Then maybe a small portal to actual space/vacuum?

Hmm... I wonder if Jiraiya knows of any way to increase perception time. ...Probably not that he'd be willing to share. Dammit I want more TIME to make our seals...

I wonder if we can set up a time loop for temporal immortality.

e: Do you guys have any low-complexity ideas for basic time shenanigan seals? Stuff that we could actually pull off right now?

If you want to have more time, push for the Shadow Clone technique as fast as possible. Shadow Clones may be limited for chakra-related stuff, but they let you take care of mundane tasks twice as fast, meaning more time for research. The Shadow Clone can have all the deep, meaningful conversations that build team unity while Hazou does seals.

There are far too many assumptions that we're making about a seal we haven't researched yet to comment.
The first most likely problem is that the size of the portal will probably be limited by the size of the seal and a small portal means that decompression will be slow and gradual rather than explosive. The mythbusters experiments on guns being fired in planes seem to be relevant.
Apart from that I feel like it's too much of a pain to put some kind of marker seal (for the seal they are going to eat to open a portal to.) into space. No matter which assumptions I think we might use, this one will be a constant, barring a seal that requires programing coordinates.

We should probably consider seals for our own benefit, too, though; We should suggest to Kagome working out how to make clothing-delimitted barrier seals that move with the clothes. I'd really like to have some form of improved resistance to damage from seals. It'd make me feel a lot better if we weren't quite so squishy.

Tbqh I just want several thousand words of Kagome fanboying over his own absolutely batshit insane sealing ideas, this is what my heart needs today

I could have several pages of JUST Kagome and Akane and I would be happy. Nothing against Nobby, Hazou, Mari, or Keiko, but those two are so adorable.

Scenes that should exist so much that I may actually try to write them into omakes:
1) Akane hanging out and training with protective uncle Kagome
2) Kagome and Hazou discussing ridiculous seals
3) Hazou and Keiko communicating clearly. It's such a breath of fresh air as someone who wishes real life communication would work that way.
4) Mari giving Noburi and Hazou girl advice; Kagome and also Keiko may or may not be eavesdropping
5) Civilian points of view that show exactly how nonsensical each of our party members is

I'm not sure about putting it on clothing like a suit of armor, but I'm intrigued by the idea of a mobile shield in the classic sense.

In high level ninja combat, having some sort of defense is essential. Your options are (roughly speaking) being so fast that you can't be hit, being able to tank hits (perhaps by transforming your body or being in another dimension), or being able to regenerate from hits. A lot of ninja go with speed because the other two are much more difficult to pull off. Once you get to high order effects, ninja combat is a game of rocket tag where it's impossible to block a lot of effects.

A portable force shield, like one knights carried, could be something we could hide behind. Being made of pure force it should be able to bounce both physical attacks and elemental jutsu. Even better, it means we don't need to do the extra research to reduce a barrier seal from five anchor points to 1. We could have the barrier extend over a shield made out of metal or something.

As anyone who knows anything about real life fighting will tell you, a shield is a pretty awesome thing.

We should consider our action plan, given that the most voted-for option so far is [х] Meanie. We don't want that to win.

Plan Scout-it-Out
Mari-sensei and Hazou go in playing the role of an advance party for a noble who is considering traveling this way and wants a report on if the inn is suitable. They ask for a tour of the inn to check it out. While there, they try to spot the target and scope out the guests in general, as well as checking out defenses and internal layout.

Justification: Mari is obvious, but we need to send a male with her in order to check out the male's bath area (in case the target is there). Don't want to send Noburi because he wouldn't have access to has chakra pool without lugging around a jug of water, don't want Kei or Akane to henge because they might be checking for henges (and besides Hazou has a fine Deception), and don't want to send Kagome because... well... I think that's obvious.

Meanwhile, Kagome scouts the area and plans an exit strategy, as well as finding a good place for interrogation if we need to execute plan smash-and-grab or any variation on kidnapping the target.

Meanwhile Noburi, Akane, and Kei continue to gather information locally. See if they can find any pressure points for the employees and check out the suppliers so we know what to do if we need to take that route to infiltrate.

Discussion/comments?

I wonder if we can "accidentally" get Akane and that pregnant daughter to meet. She's great at befriending people, we should use that.

Perhaps some employees can get misteriously sick and we can get hired as substitutes? Or just plain hired? This has to happen before the important visitor arrives, the sooner the less suspicious. Also the job itself should be as low-level as possible to generate less interest.
And even if whoever gets hired spends all time under observation, well, that's still a few folks whose attention is diverted from the rest of the team.

E:
Imagawa delivers every Sunday, plus various mid-week orders as necessary.
These are the new guys. Maybe wait for delivery, ambush them, then take on their role to infiltrate the resort from another angle. Since they are new posing as part of their group is less suspicious than that other family, Wakamoto.

On that note, we really need to know what day is it today (day of the week at least if not date) and how long untill the window we're waiting for, and how long will said window last.

A force shield would certainly be a significantly easier project. We wouldn't need it to be a proper shield, though, just have enough structure to stay put together in spite of the stresses put on it by blocking attacks and serve as a chassis.

Of all the group, Akane probably has the best chance at blending in as a native. She grew up in the Land of Fire and will no doubt have the right accent, recognize the right cultural references, etc. I'd really like to get to meet the daughter, but that would require more research so as to figure out what sorts of things the daughter does.

I'm not wild about the idea of getting hired. A few points:
1. This is a highly security-conscious inn. They will want references and a verifiable history, preferable hiring locals with family in the area.
2. There are many other inns in the area. If they need emergency help, they can probably send out a letter and have experienced staff on hand within the hour.

I don't think we get on staff without actually replacing a specific person, which is admittedly possible with a henge.
