Also, what's the status on IC math? Wave propagation without calculus might be slightly tricky.
Iirc complex math is conglomerated into Sealing because playing with forces that will snap you in half(if your divinely lucky) if you're a hair off any measurements is a very strong incentive for being good at numbers.

There's ~16 hours left, so I suppose I'll make a plan.

[X] Out of Time
Word count: 288
Ino:
  • Inform Ino of Akane's mission and her emotional state.
  • Mention Dog methods for helping each other through emotional turmoil.
  • Strategize how to ensure Akane is motivated to return to us.
  • Thank Ino for continuing to be herself.
Akane:
  • If available, have Kagome give Akane sets of reactive armor to outfit her shadow clones with.
  • Spend as much time with Akane as she will allow.
  • Tell Akane that she is right, that Hazo's loyalty has always been to Uplift first and Leaf second.
    • Team Uplift, not the idea.
    • That we have all failed to live up to the idea of Uplift at different times.
    • That if Akane's sins are greater, then we must do more over the course of her life to tilt the scales in the other direction.
    • That our generation is cursed to struggle and sully ourselves while we work to make our vision a reality.
    • That if we do well enough, our children will never struggle as we have.
Sealing
  • Talk to Kagome about some sealing ideas and get his take on the feasibility and utility of them.
    • Air Tunnels
      • Improved bombardment speed (bottom placement), reduced drift (side placement).
      • Potential for personal application to increase speed.
    • ARS
      • Manual activation of remote seals.
      • If we add activation through chakra control, stacked ARS could activate a suite of buff seals with a single act.
    • Light Communication
      • Could you shine different color light at a seal and have it output differently? Different intensity? Intervals?
  • Tell Kagome our findings on stone impurity preventing 3D sealing.
  • Priority of seal research given Kagome approval is AT > ARS > LC
  • Attempt to use SC to run parallel research.

[X] Back to the Lab Again
Word Count: Low
  • Akane & Ino
    • Fill in Ino on Akane's plight, and bring them along on an evening together if Ino's free. Spend time with the both of them, even if it's just sitting together and watching the sunset or something. Follow Dog advice, with copious tactile support.
    • Ensure Ino and her clan is doing okay too, her feelings are also important
  • Instructing Harumitsu once Akane leaves
    • Sanity check with Kagome (if he is free) and Hazou shadow clones.
    • As a training exercise, tune HOWS seals to different colors.
      • -1 FP Declaration: Notice that the tuning follows the same order that light disperses into when it passes through a Prism.
      • What happens when you go past red?
      • Produce a Seal that detects light. Does it still detect anything when you go past red?
    • Away from Harumitsu's eyes, dedicate Shadow Clone hours to concurrent Seal research.
      • One twelve hour clone, investigate Action Relay Seals.
        • Can one Seal be designed to trigger another? Base it on LBF research and chakdar detection research.
      • Second twelve hour clone, continue investigating Air Tunneling Seals.
        • Similar in function to implosion seals or tunneler's friend. With enough of these active at once, air resistance should be reduced or negated as air is absorbed before it can cause friction.

"I'm sorry, but I really should be getting on with mission prep now. I've got equipment to prepare, and maps to memorise, and I want to get some last-minute athletics training in while it's light. Thank you for taking the time to talk to me."
Whether it's a good thing or not, Akane doesn't want to focus on non-mission related stuff. So why don't we spend time with her in the context of mission prep, ie do some athletics training with her?

You know, now that I go back and check, is there even time to really hang out with her? She had that distressing convo with Hazou, who then went and talked to both Cannai and Kagome about it. And she leaves the next morning

If she commented 'while its still light' I imagine there were only a few hours left of daylight

It is now 5pm. Dinner is in an hour and Akane leaves just after dawn.
Dunno what she's doing right now but Google Fu tells me it's better to exercise in the evening compared to the morning; therefore she may be doing the athletics training for after dinner.

Experience tells me it's a bad idea to exercise right after eating, especially intensive ninja training :p

If it's already 6PM in the evening in Wintertime its probably dark, so I'd imagine she already did the training if she was intending to do it while there was still light out. Especially since training is performed in 3 hour blocks

-1 FP Declaration: Notice that the tuning follows the same order that like disperses into when it passes through a Prism.
I've added this declaration. Does anyone mind spending the Fate Point on it? It seems more likely to me that Hazou will make the connection if he realized this, not sure if this merits a Declaration or not though

No. That's what I'm hoping the declaration will contribute to, but he does not know this information yet

@Inferno Vulpix Any ideas on how to word this?
"As a training exercise, tune HOWS seals to different frequencies of light colours."

Or, yeah, pretty much what FS just suggested.

This combined with the prism-ordering visualization can help put Hazou in the mindset of colour as a linear spectrum even if he doesn't know what a 'wavelength' is or the true nature of the electromagnetic spectrum.

Fundamentally, we need him to learn how to alter the colour of the output (likely easy enough), and then guess that it might be possible to go 'past' red, which requires an understanding of ordering in which red is on one 'end' of a spectrum. Good thought on the prism, that and rainbows in general can help give him that linear perspective.

Sorry if I'm rambling, was just reading a very rambly thing and I think some of the mindset bled over. But yeah, we aren't aiming for Hazou to understand wavelength, we ideally don't need for him to understand wavelength, but we can probably make him think of colour as a linear spectrum like in rainbows and jazz, and from there he'd have the 'red is an endpoint of colour' perspective enough to go 'but what if past red?' and maybe stumble upon infrared.

[X] Back to the Lab Again

Overall I like how short this plan is. It's got two scenes, one's got potential to be heartwarming and the other's got potential to be cool and neither should swamp the update size.

Since it's been a while since this happened IU, I thought I might try to work out the bonuses associated with the roll to better understand Sealing. Hazou first attemps a Calligraphy roll vs TN ???, his base Calligraphy is 24 effective 27 from IN. He gets +10 on both rolls from the 5 days of research and rest, if he's smart he'll go down the time ladder for his first attempt at scribing and get another +3 from his AB of 3. He'll probably also invoke an Aspect or two "Jiraiya's Sealing Notes" "Promising Sealing Student" "Kagome Checked My Work" and "Have To Look Good In Front of My Student" are probably valid choices.

Hazō, Calligraphy 27 + 10 (research bonus) + 3 (time-ladder) + ???s (Unknown Aspects) + 4dF = 40 + ???
TN ???

Hazou has seen Tunneler's Friend but never researched it, so only a slight or no veterancy bonus from that end. He hasn't researched implosion seals either. So little experience in seals that deal with air. He has researched UGLSPs though so there's that.

As a side note, the Known Seals page has Hazou recorded having researched Rocket Boot seals, which seems unlikely at best.

Now on to the research roll. Hazou's base sealing is 20, but with SSA it's effectively 42, he gets +10 for the research bonus, +2x AB = 10 for taking 5 minutes to infuse since that's that's two steps down the time ladder. If Harumitsu is assisting him he can spend a FP to contribute his AB to Hazou's roll, let's say he does because it's cute, +1 for Harumitsu.

Hazō, Sealing 42 + 10 (research bonus) + (10 time ladder) + 1 (Harumitsu's AB) +???s (Unknown Aspects) + 4dF = 63 + ???
TN ???

A quick note about FP here, Hazou burnt 8 FP to live later in the update, that means he can't really reroll or invoke Aspects on either roll without violating causality. On the other hand, he didn't need to burn about 7 of that 8 FP. So he could have used them without dying later and violating causality. Except! He should have had a minor Physical Consequence during the update from his sealing roll from SSA. He still passes his Alertness check with a 34, but his Resolve check should have a -2, so it looks like he didn't need to burn 5 of those FP. Good thing Hazou's not actually dead. Also I think he generates an FP from taking a Consequence? Is that how SSA works? I feel like I understand this less and not more
Can't use the time ladder on Sealing research, so the Callig roll would be 37 and the Sealing roll 52, 53 if Harumitsu is helping out as part of his apprenticeship.

@eaglejarl @Velorien How is progress on the Air Tunneling Seal? Is it easy, or hard? Does Hazou think he could finish it in a couple more cycles? Does Hazou think he even needs prep days?

Questions about radio poking:
  • Did anyone look into the early history of radio? That seems to matter a lot.
  • Is the goal to make a single iteration of HOWS with tunable output color, or to research multiple seals?
  • Should we build a light detection seal first, in order to best lead Hazou to the realization that light can be invisible?

All this talk of electromagnetism has me thinking that those observation platforms made of wire and hundreds of meters in height must make for incredibly good lightning rods. Also probably melt at once if hit by lightning.

If they are isolated from ground, they could be made into radio comms. Static buildup from earth's field, discharge with a ground wire to generate a spark, will generate an EM pulse that will precipitate a spark in another insulated tower. On nearby jewelry too, depending on shape. Not nearly enough spoons to calculate effective range and maximum pulse frequency though.

Edit: assuming the FSB does not interfere with EM, and that EM actually works in MfD, of course

Unfortunately for us, Maxwell postulated the electromagnetic spectrum and this appears to have been the starting point for radio. They understood electromagnetism at least theoretically before they wound up putting together any practical applications, and we're not going to be able to follow the same approach.

I hope we don't catch too many x-rays and die a horrible death of radiation sickness. I'm going to stop thinking about the possible uses for radiation as a poison or offensive platform now.

Going in the red direction should be safe enough, though there's really no reason for Hazou to only go in that direction.

We'll need to think about whether one direction would cause burns/damage/have immediate effects earlier than the other.

Short-wave radiation travels less effectively, I think, so maybe we can stay away from it looks that.

I mean, I object to it on account of not wanting to do Radio, does that count? :V

Also, you should make sealing plans separate from action plans, if EJ is okay with it, so that I am not forced to be a single-issue voter :p
