I think Asuma's actions can make sense for at least three reasons:
- This one's pure speculation on my part, but "making strong Leaf ninja 'wade through rivers of blood' might give us new jōnin or even a new Jiraiya"
- He's really irrational about destroying them, because as a strong ninja he's severely messed up and they attacked so they must be consumed
- He wants to destroy them because he's not incredibly powerful but must absolutely answer a threat and he has to step up both for "otherwise Leaf will get trampled" and for "I must be as strong as Gramps" reasons

Also, now would be a good time to talk to Shikamaru about this "don't destroy the Rock thinker clan" thing. If not to know more because of the possible infohazard or memetohazard, at least to help figure out how to spare them since that seems to be of prime importance.

You are making him sound insanely irrational when at his angriest moment in the entire story multiple people pointed out how he was being dumb and he adjusted his reasoning essentially immediately.

You mean this part?:
The air burned. "GET THE FUCK OUT!" Asuma bellowed. "ANBU! ATTEND!"

The door burst open and three masked killers poured through it.

Asuma stabbed a finger at Motoyoshi. "Get this—"

Shikamaru suddenly doubled over in a coughing fit so violent that everyone started to reach for their weapons or push their chairs back.

Because we already asked him multiple favors before and he expects us to function like everyone else. "Akane being a liabilty" is just another time we ask him for help/favors, that's just another problem for him. And if asked Akane would disagree that she is a problem.

little gain on a border patrol mission.
Since Akane and Yuno got a mission to "head up the border" for a week, or before that.

If it's just a simple border patrol than she can just go. But usually you don't go on "Border patrol" between two countries (non of which belongs to us) like this if it's not important.

Akane isn't a jounin and Yuno is still going.

Which makes Akane more important to go on that mission? If a non-jonin can help defeat a jonin thats good, not bad.

Also, a thing to note for those suggesting Hazou replace Akane: our Athletics, taijutsu and alertness are all 10 less than hers. That's a pretty substantial gap. That's about half the difference between ranks. So I think that it would be a suggestion that would be sentimentally meaningful, but also if Yuno expects us to be at Akane's power level, that's how mistakes are made. Not the we still can't fill that role, but I think the fight against that Jonin would have gone different if we were there instead of Akane.

We have no idea if the Toads are referencing CP, Physique, total XP, a combination or something else.
I'm aware of that. The upside is that we were already planning on leveling chakra capacity. The only xp that we are really spending is the 5 for physique 30. I for one think that price is one that is worth paying for the opportunity to learn more about sage mode. If Ma and Pa now say to Noburi that he needs a bit more brawn and chakra, we know that we are on the right track. If they say something else, well, at least we have a better idea what to go for in the future and we've only "lost" 5 xp.

*PUTS ON NINJAS ARE TOOLS HAT*: It's actually an excellent idea if he doesn't want the mission to get fucked up by a defective meatsack, because we are informing him ahead of time of likely failure and offering to substitute with an inferior but fully functional cog

More seriously: Goketsu (and Yamanaka) just got him a fucking treasure trove of potentially war-winning information. I don't think "hey can Akane not go on this border patrol gig" is that big of a deal by comparison, especially when we are offering to fill in for her with another of our own ninja.

Plus Yuno is still going and she is the stronger of the two

Yeah that seems fine. As Noburi's columns expand we're going to need a bunch of random 10s so might as well start now haha

Why don't we just go to Shikamaru with our concerns? He is the head strategist after all, but still closer to our peer than our superior. He has input in mission rosters.

To steal a phrase I saw EJ use once, "I don't agree and I don't know how to make my position any clearer."

OK?

But your plan simply doesn't consider anything about Asuma simply disagreeing. Your plans goal is just to replace her, instead of anything else, like adding a new member to hopefully help her not feeling like shit.

Asuma
  • Sanity check with Shikamaru, Ino, and Mari
  • Akane has battle shock and is potentially contemplating suicide. Hazou is concerned deploying her on a mission will result in her allowing herself to be killed.
  • Is there any way her mission can be postponed, or canceled?
    • If essential, another Goketsu could take her place. Hazou, if necessary.
  • Is there an estimated date for the Scroll Hunt? If it's within the next couple weeks, Akane should likely be removed from consideration for the mission.
Probably should start by saying we believe her depression will likely impact mission performance. That's what Asuma cares about. If he had the time to care about every nin who's likely to die because of depression, Kei/Snowflake's girlfriend wouldn't have died.

That's more or less what was intended by the line "Hazou is concerned deploying her on a mission will result in her allowing herself to be killed." but you're right that it should be made much more explicit.

Happy?

Honestly I kinda wanna confront Asuma about this.

Except like, that's dumb, he has no time to coddle or care about Goketsu ninja, that's our job and he'll be pissed that we wasted his time or worse - questioned his authority and thus the will of fire.

At the same time, he's a very reasonable person who, if he had the time to actually sit, discuss and care about relatively 'trivial' things, would likely be highly sympathetic to Hazo's struggle as a leader looking out for his people, if not necessarily Akane's feelings. So if we could arrange an informal meeting during Asuma's scant downtime without getting in the way of his much needed relaxation, that'd be great mmm'kay?

... Does Asuma have a Gaku? Could we go a step below Hokage to arrange for a break from missions, or less killy ones, without it being somehow treasonous? I'm okay with it being politically inconvenient, Akane deserves at least that much.
Something that I've heard a few times in debates here in the thread (paraphrased): don't just voice an objection, try to solve it as well. It's not a very good look to go to Asuma and say that Akane can't go on the mission. Even if we can make a convincing argument that it's in Leaf's best interests - even given the current war - for Akane to regain mental stability before another dangerous mission, we can do better than that. If Akane's absence would leave the mission understaffed, what can we provide to fill that gap? "Please swap Akane out for one or more other Goketsu" is a proposal that will go down a lot nicer, even if that solution doesn't work out.

Akane isn't the first Leaf-nin to become distraught to the point of suicide and/or compromising mission performance, hers is a situation Asuma is almost certainly well-familiar with. Not only does it probably break his heart every time he hears about it, he knows that it's a horrible waste of their potential. He knows that, we know that, it's not a weakness to say that it should be avoided if at all possible. Even from our position as Akane's Clan Head, our personal interest and professional interest align on making sure Akane doesn't fritter her life away.

It's possible that Asuma really truly does need Akane to go on this mission: that nobody else is free and up to the task, and the mission is worth more to Leaf than her life. It's possible that this holds true even accounting for the unreliability factor of Akane's mental distress. If that's not the case though, I expect Asuma will be 1) completely understanding about, 2) personally inclined towards, and 3) professionally interested in seeking out an alternative. If we come into his office with a description of the problem and a proposed alternative, I don't see him getting angry. Either he understands our situation, updates his mission plans based on this new context about Akane (be it with our suggested solution or with one of his own), or he tells us with all the concern and weariness of a man sending people to die that he wishes it were any other way but there's no viable substitute and the mission has to happen.

We're a Clan Head, we take care of our people. We're a Leaf-nin, we take care of our fellow Leaf-nin. We're in the war council, we take care of Leaf's military assets. He's the Hokage, he takes care of his people. He's leading the war, he takes care of Leaf's military assets. Our perspectives on Akane's situation will be largely the same, and it's hard to call us treasonous for wanting one of Leaf's rising stars to survive the week.

I agree with the sentiment that we need to address the root causes of Akane's and Asuma's concerns. Any solutions we put forth have to help us achieve Leaf's war goals otherwise Asuma will shut them down but embracing full scorched earth efforts won't help Akane's completely understandable issues.

In no particular order:

  1. Over the past couple of weeks, Asuma has started ordering a lot of scorch squad missions. Shikamaru thinks that some of them have been of marginal military utility but Asuma has been firm about it without offering any explanation.
  2. After the Orochimaru massacre, Cloud drew back for about ten days and then started plinking around the edges again. They recently stopped and have been holding position outside of Leaf's borders.
  3. Leaf has lost 12 jōnin (some of them special jōnin), three dozen chūnin, and well over a hundred genin.
  4. Losses on Rock's side have been similar, perhaps a bit less.
  5. Given that Leaf started the war with 21 jōnin and Rock started with (best guess) 150-200% of that, Leaf was originally on a sure track to defeat. Mist and Isan reinforcements have evened the odds if not better, but Rock has continued to hold the initiative. Fortunately…
  6. It turns out that Shirogane was the consort of Rock's Kage. The Yamanaka and T&I experts have been peeling his brain like a grape and getting a priceless trove of military data from it. Among the data obtained so far are the locations of multiple unit positions, including half a dozen jōnin (who also hold valuable information) and general outlines of their abilities. Asuma is deploying three separate strike forces, one of them being "Orochimaru, plus two chūnin to deal with standing guard at night and any chaff during the battle." There is an excellent chance to decisively turn the tide of the war.

In light of this information we need to talk to Asuma about how we could start to phase out the need to include killing civilians in scorch squad tactics. Between Ino, Noburi, or even Oro/Kabuto we might be able to find a way to mass incapacitate groups of foreign civilians for relocation to somewhere away from the fighting to save their lives and hopefully turn them into productive Fire civilians in due time. For transport we might be able to reconfigure Dog sleds and contract temporarily with multiple Dogs to move all of the unconscious people (mass transportation of civilians might be something we should develop for saving our own rural Fire citizens from reprisal scorch squads (this is the first time in a long time I've regretted giving up on Zeppelin research)).

We can at least rely on Shikamaru to support us in advocating for saving innocent lives so humanity as a whole slows its descent into complete destruction. Hopefully we can help with the planning for abducting the 6 jonin. Perhaps we could sell the idea of relocating civilians as a diversion to flush out the jonin for other Leaf squads to intercept and capture.

If we do meet with Ino soon though we need to make sure to ask about her clanmate's wellbeing. It would be rude not to and would set a bad precedent if we only focus on our own people and concerns. No one likes having a selfish partner only looking out for themselves and their interests at the expense of their SO. Sure we have a whole clan to think about but she does too so the same golden rule of reciprocation still applies.

For transportation, we could just have the civilians walk. :D

[x] Action Plan: When Words Fail, Use Action (Now, With More Action!!)
Words: 363 (for now)
  • Sanity check everything with Shikamaru, Kei, and Mari. Ask Ami for advice.
  • Shikamaru
    • Idea:
      • Set up and encourage mass civilian immigration from Rock to Leaf
    • Inevitable Infiltrators:
      • Create immigration checkpoints, forcing infiltrators within range of Hyuuga
      • Kill infiltrators elsewhere so Rock doesn't get savvy
    • Rock's Countermoves:
      • Stop sending infiltrators:
        • We keep getting free civilians and the squad is now on a continuous scorch squad mission, without the trauma.
        • Use posting as a way to ease traumatized ninja into the field before they resume normal missions.
      • Prevent immigration (violently/nonviolently)
        • Rock will be damaging their own civilians.
    • Benefits:
      • More civilians for Leaf, less for Rock
      • Dead Rock ninja
    • Gōketsu will handle making new civilians productive for Leaf
      • Farmland, GED education (medical/admin assistants, NFF), construction, trade apprentices...
    • Methodology
      • Destroy main transportation routes
      • Heavily target other infrastructure, leave civilians alive (increases strain on system)
      • Rumors: Sell Leaf as a promised land
        • Funded Till 'n Fills (Bakuchioka)
        • More food, fertile soil, bison meat
        • Lower taxes (if approved/lie)
        • Safety (MEW walls)
        • Better access to chakra beast extermination
  • If Asuma approves, begin preparations:
    • Buy unoccupied land
    • Make productive (Summons, fertility jutsu, MEW)
    • Find civilian to run town
      • Ex Daimyo? GED graduate?
      • Make taxes lower than normal, supplement with Gōketsu funds
  • (offscreen)
    • Explain Akane situation to Kagome and Cannai, ask for help/advice.
    • Ask Asuma to extend Akane's break.
  • Talk with Akane
    • You can't give back those people's lives by leaving the Gōketsu or abandoning uplift
    • What you can do is try to make the world a better place for the people that are still here
    • Uplift isn't about being perfect. If it was, no one would fit it, not even the Sage himself
    • Please, help us make things better for people. We won't always be able to avoid hurting people, but we can at least minimize the damage and try to have a net positive effect on the world
    • (If Asuma approved) Share what you are doing to try and save civilians
    • Suggest that Akane do something tangible to help civilians before her next mission
      • Give money/food to a starving family?
      • Work at hospital, helping the med nin?
      • Bring medicine to families?
    • Explain necromancy (high opsec)

...is Kurenai alive? Did she get killed, and now Asuma is blinded by vengeance? I have no clue how else to explain his behaviour.

...Alright, this might be a bit paranoid, but.

I think this is bait. A jounin wandering off in a civvie town for "vacation" during a war, with just a couple chuunin for company? They intend to bait us in to attack them, counterambush, and while that's going on, Cloud will hit us.

Just a heads-up, but because plans get reset after each voting cycle, this plan got cut and you are the first person to vote for it (in this cycle). If it wins, Velorien will read it and find your post, NOT the original one which you intend to vote for.

Man, the Tsuchikage's a cold motherfucker to have sacrificed one of her own Jonin-level clansmen for this bait (imagine her reaction if Akane and Yuno had accidentally killed him). Not to mention the amount of time it would have taken for Shirogane to have honestly believed all of this shit, made doubly so that he would have needed to be strong (and socially skilled) enough to not trip any of our red flags in it having been too easy...

It's fucked up, so I believe it.

I don't think that's worth giving up the extent of the abilities of so many of their ninja tbh

I do like the big brain nature of this paranoia though
