Asuma doesn't just like us, he actually thinks we're smart and useful. This is an amount of good fortune I'm not sure what to do with. I can already feel the despair of losing his trust after we invariably do or say something comically stupid and dangerous in his presence.

Ah, the optimism of past me, not realizing that at the time we'd already done the stupid and dangerous thing and simply hadn't faced the consequences yet.

I am a bit disappointed that this was a rather straightforward battle with the Condor Boss rather than a more nuanced moral confrontation over how the Gōketsu Clan is responsible for enabling the Pangolin campaign of Genocide and Conquest.

On the plus side, Hazou showed a delightful amount of spine when talking to Asuma. If nothing else, he came off as genuinely well-intentioned and determined to help the village, if by usurping authority that wasn't his.

But yeah, in Asuma's mind, we're a volatile element as of now. Insofar as he sees it, we'll play nice as long as we agree with his policies, but go talk to mass murdering terrorists behind his back if that changes. That is not a comfortable place to be as a newly minted Kage, especially since he was basically forced to release Hazou after a demonstration of the political power we have. He most definitely does not like us anymore.

Repairing this relationship will have to involve showing him that we can fall in line and support policies we disagree with. He essentially sees Hazou as someone with no loyalty to anything but his ideals, which is essentially true. We need to show that we can be a good citizen and play the game according to the unwritten rules. I expect some kind of test being thrown our way in the near future, and we should be ready to make sacrifices to pass.

I...

I'm tempted to say that I was wrong, but you know what? I was still completely right. We're only alive because of interference of forces external to the Office of the Hokage.

And what interference it was! Very impressive.

We're.... not dead? We're not even demoted from Clan Head on no-confidence owing to our obvious insanity and/or treason?

Clearly the universe has forgotten something, and we should do our utmost to never do anything that might remind it to reap its due.

How do you know that we are actually alive, and the final events of the chapter are nothing but a pre-execution genjutsu or hallucination?

Or, you know, Orochimaru?

Man, I don't know which part of the chapter I love the most: the initial intense report to Asuma where Hazou stands his ground, the battle with Conjura, or the extent of the Gouketsu et al.'s rescue attempt.

(Naturally, this only incentivizes me to vote for committing more treason.)

[X] Action Plan: Treason
  • Scour Leaf's lawbooks to find the minimum set of actions which can be defined as "treason" while also being as non-threatening as possible to as many of Leaf's interests as possible.
  • Commit that treason.
  • Immediately commit seppuku to atone for your sins.

So, ah, I vote we postpone our visit to Mist. Or any visits and/or plans outside the village. Let's stay home and do some comfortable skyslider development, routine-establishing socialization, and maybe start a short true story on how we ventured into the afterlife and rescued someone from it (somewhat redacted for OPSEC and propaganda purposes, of course).

Oh well. I think we can all agree when i say "No more treason until we're S-rank". Also, let's give Asuma some new inventions, he earned it, even if the situation is less "Asuma spared us because he understood our points" and more "Political powers convinced Asuma to spare us"

(Naturally, this only incentivizes me to commit more treason.)

First unlimited power, then treason.

To forestall some criticism that is likely to come up: This battle was implemented the same as Battle of the Gods: We had a combat simulator program, we chose stats for all the participants and did some rolls to make sure the code was working as expected, and then we said "This is it" and lived with the results. Both @Velorien and I expected to lose both of the Leaf jōnin and at least one of Ami, Keiko, and Naruto. The fact that it didn't happen is shocking.

EDIT: Typo

You know, given the events of the past ~10 chapters, it seems like all those firstborns promised weren't for naught.

Jashin is My Copilot.

Survived treason debrief? Check.
Didn't wussy out on principles? Check.
Keiko ain't dead? Check.
Team pulled a rescue? Check.

Let's get to the party. Beach episode ahoy!

So basically the roll you wanted for BotGs?

Once again, PRAISE RNJASHIN! This, like the sealing failure, just proves that Hidan is right to declare that Jashin is on our side.

I'm hereby adding maximizing Jashin's utility function to my list of long-term goals. All of Out shall be claimed in His name!

Damn, I just remembered! We forgot to hand Itachi a Post-Interaction Survey! I bet we'll never get a similar opportunity. Sucks.
Under the circumstances, I don't think you'd like what he'd write on it. Especially if Sasori can get him an "I Prepared Explosive Runes This Morning" seal.

To expand on this, while we worked on the content together, @eaglejarl did 100% of the coding, and put a ridiculous amount of time and effort into it (as you can see from the time it took to finalise the simulator). He deserves almost as much praise as Jashin.

Rule 3: Be Civil: This sort of drive-by snipe at a whole quest base is kinda silly.
Even if I think the voters in this game are pretentious AF: Bravo to eaglejarl and velorian for such an awesome story. I had gotten so sick of the ridiculous political maneuvering and stupid acts of pushing way above our weight class, but it's so heartening to see the story back to the quality that got me binging it in the first place. And calling out said voters (seriously I even stopped reading for a month because of this shit).

Now let's hope the voters actually learn their lesson this time. Honestly, you two are too good at writing. I'd almost call it throwing pearls at swine.
