This is actually canon. Minato does this.
Minato creates a seal without any physical substrate, just by touching something? Wow. Was that anime-only (i.e. filler) or actually in the manga?

So if the ink isn't a focus for an exercise of will in focusing chakra into the right shape to achieve an effect, what is it doing exactly? Magical circuit diagram, creating a path for chakra to follow? Something else?
HDK

I like this one because it's a neat and tidy explanation for why things work the way they have been established to in MfD. I don't remember running into an explanation before, just being told that every sealmaster has their own style and that's just how it works, which is unsatisfying. It's important to know why.
We try not to give information that Hazō doesn't have. It might be that if Hazō does the research he will discover that it does work this way. Or maybe not.

You can safely relax, Tsunade isn't going to kill Akane for caring about someone and wanting to ensure Tsunade gets complete information so her patient gets the best medical treatment possible.

@eaglejarl @Velorien @OliWhail Are we to do write up training plans for Keiko and Noburi or will they be doing their own things for the month?
We've got it covered, but thanks for checking.

I believe that there are some skepticism from some players about @Jello_Raptor 's research proposal.

Say, does Hazō believes he could gain something out of examining every sealmaster's explosive seal blank in Konoha?

So not only any seal, but (presumably) one of the most difficult in the world, given that no other nation has replicated it.
It's not the only example. Minato can also cast a seal to block their ability to summoning (used on Obito) and create the seal that sealed the Kyuubi inside Naruto. Danzo has his cursed seal thingy which he used on Sasuke simply by grabbing his throat. Itachi sealed Amaterasu in Sasuke's eye (don't even ask).

Need I go on?

OK, I can grant Minato doing bullshit sealing stuff that only he can do, but other characters? Nope.

I can't believe we barely are able to make any purchases in chakra reserve.
I mean we COULD upgrade it much farther, but all of the other stats cost more due to being higher level.

Do you know how the skill buying mechanics work? Have you read the new rules?

Kiba, it seems like you're really negative a great deal of the time in your thread posts. I don't know what the issue is or what you might be wrestling with in your private life, but it's becoming a real drag.
Don't take it personally. I don't think any negativity is actually meant.

Alright.

[x] Action Plan: The Power of Love to Go Even Further Beyond

  • While practicing KI with Kei, attempt to project outwards Hazou's own soul. Not a will to destroy, but the will to protect. Even under the terrifying pressure of Kei's killing intent, Hazou projects a warmth of (sibling!) love that will melt the ice mirrors and deliver to Kei the spiritual and absolutely-not-physical hug that she so clearly needs. If Hazou is mentally sundered by the mirrors then so be it, Kei's Killing Intent will not push away his support.
  • Try to grab an hour or so of Jiraiya's time, alone.
    • Mindset: This is going to be the most brutal thing you have ever experienced. Prepare mentally.
    • Ask him about the killing intent thing.
      • What's the deal there?
    • Help us practice resisting it, pretty please?
      • Its a critical vulnerability if some Jonin can just floor us by glaring at us, and then slit our throats.
    • Ask Jiraiya to floor you with a bit of his killing intent.
      • You are the scariest and strongest guy around, sir.
      • Please don't accidentally kill us or break our minds or something, though.
    • Now. Get. Up.
      • You are Hazou Gouketsu-nee-Kurosawa, son of Hana and Shinji, adopted son of Jiraiya. This is embarrassing.
      • You are a disciple of Gai-sensei. Giving in to fear and intimidation is not in your playbook.
      • You are a sealmaster. You have seen the horrors of the Out and lived. This is nothing in comparison.
      • Your nerves are iron, and your body moves by your will and yours alone! Get the fuck up.
      • By all the kami in heaven, you will Uplift this world. Start by Uplifting yourself from the dirt.
    • Repeat a few times.
      • Try to at least raise your head and look Jiraiya in the eye.
      • But don't hurt yourself.
  • Make seals.
  • Proceed to the tournament.

This is it!

  • Under the word count """"""limit""""""
  • Gives us an opportunity for some good character growth moments re:Hazou's Willpower.
  • Gives us an opp. to purchase FiF
  • Is "Ambitious", or perhaps as close to it as we can get without eschewing safety.

I'm gonna be honest.

1) Hazou can do this.

If Keiko, despite literally being unable to process human social interaction as easily as another human being can, is able to argue Hana (the diplomat with bullshit clan social training and good socials) into a corner, then Mr. "Pretty Damn Far." can defy someones bullshit will-projection a little bit. Especially if Akane can do the same just because she says the words "Youth" under her breath and believes hard enough.

Hazou is the one who charges into danger without a second thought to save his teammates from a pile of missing-nin, kills said missing-nin, and then rescues them. (Aside: I'm reasonably certain that Hazou has the highest killcount of the four of them, modulo any secret mission bullshit Noburi has done.)

Hazou stares death in the face on a daily basis as a sealmaster. He gets shafted outside of his dimension and gets punted back by a giant whale, as demonic gods are grasping for his soul. No big deal, just a day in the life.

"To what extent are seal designs on the table? Either several low-to-medium tier utility seals that you think will contribute most to our effectiveness, or a deeper dive into a particular area, like modified storage seals?"

One of the Toad Sage's bushy eyebrows shot up. "You survive an infusion failure and then immediately ask about doing more sealing? Gutsy. When you say utility seals, what are you thinking of?"

He then proceeds to stare Jiraiya down when he questions his ideals.

Some of the fire and steel he had felt the last time he stared Jiraiya down was coming back into Hazou's voice now, matching the steel in the Toad Sage's unwavering gaze. "You can't build up, because you would get crushed under the fist of an angry, terrified war god. You can't work with other nations to break out of the status quo, because you won't be trusted, and won't trust them, since you both know that trust would be exploited. So Leaf has to help perpetuate a broken system that's slowly breaking humanity, even if you guys are better about it than others.

"No matter what, we want to help you keep the peace. But in the end, that's just forestalling the inevitable, and something has to change, or everything is going to crumble into dust, and everyone is going to die - everyone in Leaf, every single one of us, and everyone we've ever cared about. A war goes down, everyone loses that much sooner. So we have no choice but to build a world where everyone wins, because we refuse to allow the alternative. Now, one more time, I'm asking you: will you help us?"

Hazou ignored the stares of Team Asuma. Jiraiya was silent for several long seconds. "It sure sounds like if I say no, you're going to try and do it without me," he said finally.

Hazou met the old man's gaze unflinchingly. Just like the last time, he felt like his soul was being laid bare. Eventually Jiraiya snorted, and the spell was broken. "Iron Nerve indeed. Alright, suppose I get on board with this plan. What do you propose to do?"

The balls on this kid.

Hazou gets K.O.-ed for 8 hours, gets resuscitated and shakes it off to save his team. No big deal.

After his (former) girlfriend rips his soul out, and a proctor tries to tear down everything he stands for, he flips the world the bird, lets them know to be ready for an asskicking and proceeds to #Wreck everyone with some awesome planning before doing some unneeded but 100% epic Dragonball tier shit in punching out a taijutsu spec Cloud ninja. All in a days work.

Hazou gets his ass dumped and decides that the best therapy would be to start running around upside down and challenging every Jonin in the village to a spar. Proceeds to get his ass beaten into the ground by Gai for a few hours, but the kid keeps getting back up. No sweat.

Testing his new toys almost takes his spleen out? You would think this would be traumatic in some way?

Just a few days later:

JIRAIYA: So you won't do that thing again, right?

HAZOU: Yeah, that was a dumb move. Oh well, I've tested everything since then. Anyways, check out how cool this shit is.

*Does some ninja ink-magic to shoot stuff from paper taped to his body*

HAZOU: See? That's pretty fucking cool.

JIRAIYA: Yeah, tell me more.

...

Hazou cannot be stopped. He is a juggernaut of determination and willpower.

We just need to let him be that a bit more often.

2) On the Risk-Averse Behavior of the Playerbase

I don't think there's anything that can go wrong here. I don't think there's anything to gain by playing it safe.

Let's dare to be great.

3) Can we give the kid an opportunity for a solid victory here?

Is giving the kid a chance to show some of the fire and iron thats inside his personality really such a bad thing?

I would be much more comfortable letting Hazou take the wheel on a lot of stuff if he had more explicit instances of that ironclad determination that we all know is lurking beneath his friendly and oblivious exterior. Whatever your intentions may be on characterization, I cannot fathom why going for "Indomitable Bastion of Willpower" is counterproductive to them.

Aside from bloodline powers, nothing is inherently limited to any particular character. If one person can master a technique with enough work, someone else can. It's not easy, but don't reflexively dismiss it out of hand for no particular reason.

Part of Minato being Minato is that he's a sealmaster. Ditto for Jiraiya.

But Danzo and Itachi? They don't show a lick of being sealmasters until it's pointed out in relatively obscure part of Naruto canon.

@MadScientist I managed to lower the wordcount of the first section of your plan by X words.

Original:

So now the following can be added to the top of your plan:
  • Ask Jiraiya for Intel on our competitors.
That's 7 words. With my edit it would put us at 296 if I'm not mistaken.

That doesn't seem to have anything to do with what I said. With the exception of bloodline powers, there aren't really things that are somehow magically restricted to one character that nobody else can learn.

On the plus side, you have ammunition for a new conversation about how cool it would be if sealmasters such as Hazou could do that.

If Hazō can do that, it means he's S-rank. In this world, it's far more valuable for chunin-jonin level sealmasters being able to churn out inventions like skywalkers then it is to have Hazō becoming the Green Flash due to being able to replicate Minato's feat.

[x] Action Plan: The Power of Love to Go Even Further Beyond
[X] Training Plan: In Case of Emergency, Break the Hazou

I was skittish at first because all our plans pointed to getting Forged in Fire after the tournament, but it looks like this is the best time to take it so let's do this.

Thank you :) May I suggest:

'Ask Jiraiya for Intel on our competitors, known capabilities and weaknesses.' ?
