Is it the fact that Keiko is paying for the Pangolins with chakra that isn't "hers"? Would that interact weirdly with the summoning? I vaguely remember that concept appearing in a fanfic somewhere.
If that were a problem, I think we'd have run into it before. It's possible that this is related to sustain costs killing Keiko, but that seems unlikely.

As I said, my best estimate is that it's a concern about bricking other gennin, especially Mist Wakahisa, which would cause a political shitstorm. Jiraiya is probably the only person in universe nearby who knows of the danger, and he thought of it when putting Wakahisa drain and Pangolins together, providing narrative evidence that this is the likely cause. Now, I'm pretty sure the only real precaution available here is "identify anyone with a chakra drain ability and moderate consequence them without Pangolins with extreme prejudice," so I'm not totally sure that this is worth the risk Jiraiya is taking of "a Kage directly interfering with the exams," but it's the closest I can think of to the reason Jiraiya would be acting the way he is. It's also possible that Jiraiya knows how to reverse / prevent petrification, and so thinks he can personally stop the bad consequences.

If it is the Nature chakra problem, then he's probably concerned about enemy Wakahisa first and foremost. We've had the Pangolin Scroll for over a year now, if we were going to try having Noburi drain the summons, we would've done that already. As far as Jiraiya knows, trying stuff like this is incredibly in character for Hazou (we didn't try it because it didn't seem like it would logically result in a net gain, I think?).

If this was the case, I would've also expected him to take 5 seconds to brief Ren, to borrow her authority if nothing else. I doubt the proctors at the East Gate are going to be very eager to take orders from the Hokage.

So...would it actually be our fault if, say, Kiri killed herself using her jutsu on the Pangolins?

This sounds like something the Wakahisa would have taught their clan members if they knew about it (very likely they do).

Then again, Jiraiya forgot to tell us as well but he has more of an excuse than the whole clan sending people into an Exam with known summoners.

(Hi, I'm new!)

Probably not the thing Jiraiya realized (dashing off wouldn't help), but...

Was Keiko saying we "barely" get into the tournament assuming people drop out (which is to say, we wouldn't be in the top 16)?

People who are supposed to be going to the tournament, or getting the opportunity and then dropping out:
  • (3) Team Asuma
  • (6) Rest of Red Team 1
  • (3) Team Uplift
  • (3) Team Kurenai
  • (6) Rest of Blue Team.... 2? (the one Team Asuma belongs to)
  • (?) Anybody else scoring very well?
I tried to order them, but I'm not sure it's right...
Ah, sorry it took me so long to get to this, but welcome! As ... exciting... as what's going on right now in story might be, we're glad to have you!

That seems about right. We may end up taking Team Kurenai out during the break through, for instance, keeping them unconscious a little longer through chakra drain than one might expect, but still.
e:
I'm pretty sure we didn't try it because we meta-game hard.
Yes. We don't meta-game in-character (generally, excepting BIRTHDAY SURPRISE SNOW EDITION) but we are perfectly willing to not do things we know might turn out poorly due to metagame knowledge.

Hmmm, as the rest of y'all have already identified this has to be some kind of interaction between Wakahisa chakra draining and the pangolins (or perhaps more broadly summoning).

Point of note: We haven't actually determined that this is what Jiraiya is worried about. It just seems to be our best theory.

Could someone go re-read the period when we seemed to notice Eagle's really bad thing and check if something like this was mentioned?

*whistles innocently while carefully not mentioning pages of physics research which have informed and directed Hazo's exploits*
That's kind of middle-ground stuff IMO. It's the result of hivemind-directed research; we're not going to tell him to do things we know won't be effective, and are incentivized to do the reverse.

Did we plan on draining our own pangolins?
Nope. We're worried about enemy wakahisa.

e: That said... given how the first assault went...

Do we anticipate them actually getting the chance to? Pandamonium's the most likely to be targetted, IMO, but there's also little point in chakra draining pangolin; they don't know their chakra capacity, etc. so it' snot likely to help in combat compared to doing something else.

Assuming the theory is correct: Jiraiya probably assumes that the Wakahisa actually have a chance to do anything before we knock them out which so far hasn't been the case.

Did we actually think about this, though? As in, "Let's not try to chakra drain Pangolins, nature chakra is scary." was a sentiment expressed in the thread? Honestly curious, I don't remember one way or the other.

Also, everyone is missing the most obvious reason Jiraiya left:

The fake Kazekage from a previous update got replaced by Gaara's father this update. And no one but him noticed.

This is very concerning.

Welcome! Nice to have you. How did you find us?

He's stated in the past that he can only drain into water. As to whether he can route around his own chakra system: HDK
...Huh. I wonder if Noburi could blind a Hyuuga by draining chakra into mist? Food for thought.

Well, if Jiraiya gets there in time we can ask Noburi if he can do so. Would be a convenient way to be the hero.

I'm new, so I may sound a bit ignorant, but...

If there was a real danger that non-Leaf genin can accidentally turn into stone, why would Jiraiya not tell other Kage in the room? I mean, surely the political consequences of informing others on this possibility only now, are going to be less severe than them all finding out about this after Hokage just interfered with the Event with no explanation given beforehand, or worse yet, was found around a petrified genin?

Come to think of it, is there any catastrophial scenario at all that wouldn't be better solved by informing other Kage about it and then acting together to solve it, instead of leaving with no explanation and then being found in the very epicentre of said catastrophe?

An honest question, since I usually don't follow the discussion all that closely.

Yeah, given that he's literally substituting to get there faster (and jumped out a window instead of running to the door), I don't think this is Naruto. This is something that's going to kill someone in the next five seconds if it hasn't already.

I rather hope the other Kage are following him. I really don't see a good reason for them not to.

All of them are going to familiar with the idea that "A sealmaster in motion outranks a Kage who doesn't know what's going on."

@eaglejarl: No comment necessary, just want to be sure you read the above.

Ok, so, possible issues based on what people have theorized, assuming this is nature chakra related...

1. Keiko summoning lots and lots of Pangolins and keeping them summoned means she gets too much nature chakra and turns to stone, because she's not trained to handle it.
2. Using other people's chakra like we're doing will cause either the Wakahisa or the drained people to turn to stone.
3. If a Wakahisa drains a summon, they're draining nature chakra and could turn to stone. As such, Jiraiya thinks any Mist Wakahisa may be at risk.

There's issues with all of these options though. For the first, I would think that the chakra flow is largely one way - Keiko is giving chakra to sustain the Pangolins, not the other way around, and you'd think this would be something that would be a standard, known summoner problem since I have to imagine the boss summons cost a lot to summon and sustain, and the Pangolins would have told her about it. (I know they haven't had a summoner in a while, but they still would have all the knowledge of the process) The second doesn't really make sense to me either, because once someone has consumed chakra water that chakra is theirs, and the Wakahisa can't influence it any more as far as I'm aware, and same with after the Wakahisa has drained it from its original owner. The third is possible, but I imagine this is something that Wakahisa would have found out at some point, and would tell their kids not to do as part of their basic training.

Did we plan on draining our own pangolins?

No. Why would we do that?

Watch Jiraiya get there by the time we've taken out every Blue Team.

And Red Team. Remember that we need to go after them as well.

Also the Wakahiza have 1cp of chakra. So if they do need to route chakra the they drain through their own system, they'll be overwhelmed instantly.

@faflec: We did ask about how Wakahiza drain interacts with elemental chakra, right?
