I find the Chunnin exams weird in that how do you get fighting events proper if people have lethal jutsu. Like if you hit somewhat with a fireball jutsu they're probably dead, right?

You either have the ability to "pull your punch" by stepping down the power on the jutsu, or you don't use the jutsu on them. Maybe you use it to herd them into a different attack, but you don't hit them with it.


In other news, I really want to write the event on Sunday. That would consist of you getting to the site, getting the exact rules and team assignments, and doing the thing. On the other hand, I recognize that it would be useful to have the update break after getting the rules and assignments in order to let you do more precise planning. If you want to go that route then I can probably persuade @OliWhail / @Velorien to do a lore update on Thursday so I can write the punching next Sunday. If that's what you would prefer, please vote for:

[] Pause after team assignments

That will make for an extremely short Sunday update -- most likely just a few paragraphs unless I come up with something especially interesting.

What about a scene where Hazo talks with Noburi and Keiko about the break up? Even if we didn't vote for that I would think that he would laser focus on the bit where Akane accused him of just using people. He has got to wonder if his teammates/siblings see him in the same light and that could make for some interesting character development.

Well that and/or we could vote in to try and find Hana maybe?

Or alternatively, some skullduggery involving messing with the event site - not necessarily punching, but some stealth rolls and assorted tension?
 
I'm torn on skipping to the event or trying to do some last minute therapy to mitigate Hazou's dangerous newfound access to the Dark Side of the force.

Or discussing the possibility of a sacrifice play with our direct team.

Eh. Not thrilled about it. Given my horrible level of disappointment and concomitant vengeful sadness at not writing the punching, I'd probably leave it for @Velorien to write that scene. He's better at social / political / romance scenes.

I don't think Nobs is likely to react well to any variant of this conversation that puts him in the last spot, priority wise, of people we should get to the finals.

We should get a word in about how we should attempt to deliver Mild to Moderate Consequences to cripple opponents for further possible rounds, rules and situation permitting.

Also a word about how we can't guarantee that we'll be able to handle the other Leaf teams with the kid gloves on.

Would it be justified for us to do a bit of prep the night before? Like discussing how we're going to tackle the event, what to do if we're going to be fighting against one another, etc.?
 
Thoughts...

1. Word half stealing is still in play. Take word halves from any downed opponents.
2. We should check for rules against betrayals. If betrayals are not disallowed, then we should expect that members of other teams will try to betray us and knock us out towards the end of some portion of the event, and that we should probably do the same.
3. Minor villages - are any of the remaining minor villages affiliated with Leaf? If so, could we maybe promise a seal bribe post-event in exchange for cooperation, along with passing a good word to the Hokage? Not sure how viable this is, since even if they're allied villages they're not going to care as much about Leaf's internal politics.
4. Nakano Ryouichi - possible resource as well. I think there's a poor chance he'll find the event on his own. We should leverage him. See if he'll cooperate with our political aims, maybe give him a few seals, and set him to deal with our enemies. Put in a good word about him with Jiraiya.
 
For clarity, the plan this is referencing is "Loudly announce that we will use lethal force and to stay out of our way. Actually use lethal force."

I guarantee you that if you use that plan and kill someone, we will not save you by retcon simply because you chose this plan.

If the QMs somehow made a "(X) has been shown not to work like that" type of mistake then okay, there will be a retcon, but not just because you made an unwise choice and caused catastrophic consequences for yourself and your clan.

Also, it's worth noting: your phrasing suggests that perhaps you believe we retcon things simply because players complain. That is not an idea you should depend on, because we don't do that. On the occasions where we have retconned something it's been because we were convinced that we had made a significant and unreasonable mistake in simulation. As an example, compare the outcry after Kagome murdered Minami with the outcry after the Sunset Racer; in the former case we were convinced that Kagome could not have kept the secret of his intent, so there was a retcon. In the latter case we did not feel that we had made a mistake, so you were stuck with it.

If you threaten a plan that is, speaking honestly, unwise, and suffer consequences for it, that's on you. Especially after you've received this warning.

I reiterate: do not piss off the people who spend thousands of hours providing us with free, personalized entertainment...

I think going to some of the minor villages and promising some political favor in exchange for their collaboration would be useful.

Likewise for the solo Leaf nin.
 
We probably should get Jiraiya's ok on political favors for minor villages, if we wanted to do that. We don't really have much understanding of the inter-village politics.
We can ask him at the check in before bed and then see if we can contact anyone.

I don't think it even needs to be substantial. Most of them are extremely unlikely to make it to the finals even, and even the promise of "A diplomatic meeting with the Hokage." would seem like a fair trade.

It also gives Jiraiya an opening to make some deals with them that benefit Leaf.
 
Can anybody tell me what chakra affinity does? I haven't found its current use in the rules doc.
It determines which elemental jutsu a ninja can use. Everybody has a single element by default - for example, Hazō has an Earth affinity, so he can use techniques like Tunnel Excavation, Hiding Like a Mole, and Multiple Earth Wall. Through training, you can add additional affinities to your repertoire.

Oh, of course. If you do want to see the event then make whatever plans you want for beforehand, as well as whatever tactics you want to use.

Is this the kind of thing we want to spend the secret of banshee seals on? We'd still have the secret of skywalkers in reserve, obviously.

But we should decide ahead of time under what situation we're going to leak what techniques.

Eliminate everyone. If there are only 16 contestants we are guaranteed a slot. Which is why we need to sit up an ambush right now. Get that blood flowing

We need to have a plan for what to do when Team Uplift are on opposite sides and points for one means the other loses points. Because that is exactly the set-up here. And I'm sure Mist will design the Event so refusing to fight each other means both sides lose points and get eliminated.

The trick is to fight so badly that you cost your side the Event. Of course, the bigger issue is how to figure out that you're fighting your teammate, since there's no way Mist would let us know that fact in advance.

Also, I'm going to predict right now that one of Team Uplift is going to be paired up with that Kotsuzui nin, in an effort to force an international incident.

I would prioritize it in the order of Keiko > Hazou > Noburi based on who would do best in the tournament. Noburi has become more comfortable with him being the support element of the team.
