Nah, Mist (by which I mean Ren) wants an alliance. 90% sure. They're in a really weak position, and they can stregthen it by banding together with the new Leaf regime that their leader has family ties too. It's the perfect geopolitical move, so long as we can make the Gouketsu look difficult to get rid of.

And it would be very easy to erase the Goketsu by killing us. Right now. And pinning the blame on us attacking them.

Seriously, from the retcon'd chapter they have Genin from three different villages attacking us. If it comes to a he-said/she-said Rock and Cloud are gonna be backing Mist.

What are you talking about, specifically? I mean, yes, he said all of those things in seriousness. I'm just confused as to what you think he couldn't have possibly learned, given that this is an AU?

Sure, it's an AU, but character ages were consistent with canon thus far, as far as I'm aware. For example, if we conservatively assume Kagome defected 10 years ago, then at the time Deidara would've been like 7 years old. I thought that some of it might've been Kagome extrapolating from Jiraiya's briefing to the clan heads after the big fight, but Kagome knows Deidara's appearance despite Jiraiya not describing it.

I'm bringing it up in case it's an honest QM error. It would be a rather weird and arbitrary change from canon to make Deidara older, but not anyone else. And the possibility that this is all intended and Kagome indeed knows all this stuff is frankly terrifying.

Keep in mind though, that while Ren and her bloc may want an alliance, there are surely hardline elements in Mist frothing at the mouth to kill the traitors. In fact, I peg these as the most likely power behind any serious attacks on us.

Ren doesn't want us erased. The other villages do, so that she can't easily ally with Leaf.
Ren doesn't, and since she's the Kurosawa clan head her clan is probably gonna fall in line.

I don't recall any Kurosawa clan member being part of the attack. I do recall a Wakahisa and a Kani (Crab summoning) clan member being part of the assault.

Possibility: Mist hardliners allied with other villages to kill the Goketsu in exchange for them not getting fucked or something similar.

Ah! That does sound like the kind of thing that'd be QM error if so, yeah.

And now the QMs are going to refuse to acknowledge whether or not it was an error or not, further increasing our level of paranoia whether or not Kagome actually knows Deidara personally, if it were a QM error, or (my opinion) Kagome got hold of a Bingo Book and simply has a man-crush on Deidara.

Hm, Kagome obsessively studying the Leaf bingo book we got and learning about Deidara from there is a good explanation for this that I missed, kudos.

Unfortunately, there's a bunch of other similar problems, which can't easily be explained this way. Hidan, for one, would also have been a kid at the time of Kagome's defection. He can't be described in any real detail in a Bingo Book, or Jiraiya would've recognized him (I am absolutely confident Jiraiya knows all the S-class missing-nin by heart).

I mean, in theory, it's possible Kagome just read the Bingo Book and made the whole thing up, coincidentally in such a way that it fits both canon and what we know of Akatsuki in MfD. That would be a really unpleasant move by the QMs though - they're evil, but they're also fair about being evil.

TBH I would be surprised if ages weren't changed around. It's the same kind of silly as "Itachi is chuunin at age 7".

That's easier to fix by making Itachi not graduate at such an early age, though. The Naruto timeline is actually pretty busy, with a lot of interconnected events; trying to keep most of it intact while moving around birth dates sounds like pain for no real gain.

And in any case, it shouldn't be too difficult for us to check. @eaglejarl @Velorien @OliWhail Does our Leaf Bingo Book include approximate dates of birth for missing-nin, or other ways to infer their age? If so, what does it say about Itachi and Deidara on that front?
