Having a dedicated hacker developing new tricks for us, to our specifications, doesn't appeal to you?

Given how difficult it was for us to get secret pangolian jutsu, I think it's unlikely that a dedicated technique hacker would be on the table. That's not just "elite soldier", that's a major economic asset.

Counter-arguments: 1) the pangolin in question isn't at risk, as pangolin summons aren't going to die when summoned or anything. 2) depending on how technique hacking works, it's actually a boon to a technique hacker to see more techniques used in the human world (considering the limited exposure they would have in the summoner world). Imagine the insights they could gain in battle against human ninja's, especially when they use key/secretive techniques that are otherwise just rumors as far as the Pangolin is concerned

Plus, we've already shown them that Hazou can think up some really good ideas. They were super interested in getting Pantokrators Judging Eyes.

Do we really want to gift the Pangolin Reich any more paradigm shifting military advantages? We didn't really know what we were doing with Skytowers, but we no longer have that excuse.

So here's an attempt to make a semi-official description of how we're going to make the fort and trap the surrounding area. Ping me if you want to add/change/drop stuff, I'll probably add it if it makes sense to me.
  • The Fort:
    • Location: Put the Fort near the edge of the Swamp of Mild Inconvenience.
      • Ideally the Fort should be close enough to the edge such that we can retreat to outside the Swamp quickly.
      • If possible the Fort should be situated near where we go at the end of the exam.
    • Foundations: Use ninjutsu to form an Earth floor/walls to form a Fort with 3 walls (triangular).
      • Fort should be large enough to comfortably accommodate up to 15 people.
      • Minimize chakra usage when building walls. If Practice Brick costs less chakra to form the wall use it instead of MEW.
      • Create an entrance/exit point large enough for ONLY one person to enter at a time.
        • To avoid spending hours digging through granite, create this passage ahead of time and then use ninjutsu over it.
      • Walls need only be strong enough to stay upright under their own power.
      • Floor must rise up above water level.
        • If reasonable, have a small puddle of water leading to outside for Noburi's VD to interact with the outside.
      • Place an appropriate (read: one-thread) tarp over the fort, as a roof.
    • Fortifications:
      • Apply Five-Seal Barrier to floor, walls, and tarp-roof.
        • First apply mud over the floor and walls so 5SB registers them as separate objects.
        • Place central/supporting seals inside the base.
      • Apply Air Dome seal to entrance.
      • Apply Earth Dome seal to VD water puddle as applicable.
    • Checking:
      • Have high-awareness/engineers (Paneru) check/approve the fort.
  • The Perimeter:
    • Who: Have our best trap-makers (read: allies with high Craftsmanship: Trapmaking) make traps.
      • Use maneuvers to create Aspects for trap-making (e.g., have high-Awareness allies like Neji/Hinata check traps to make an Aspect).
      • Take advantage of circumstance modifiers (e.g., everyone familiarizes themselves with terrain to create "Familiar Terrain" tag).
    • The surroundings:
      • Destroy good sources of cover with explosive tags.
      • Make note of trees/deep water/land for trap placement.
    • Making traps:
        • Explosive tags (training).
        • Macerators (Pangolin peppers).
        • Banshee seals.
        • Goo Bombs (use sparingly).
      • Trap types:
        • LBF payloads as claymores/various mechanical traps (as done here).
        • Contact/proximity explosive tags to underwater/underground mines.
        • Remote-detonation payloads with detonation location inside our base.
    • Other:
      • Attach long-term light sources to ninja wire and connect them from the fort to the edge of the trap line. Should lower Stealth in case of ambush at night.
      • Carve signs warning other ninjas of the traps and the terms of trading. Place them at the edges of the trap line.

@faflec Air Domes last 15 minutes, as do Earth Domes, we cannot use them like that. It's one thing when we've got Kagome to trade off with on writing them during watch, but we don't.

Oh really? Damn. I'll probably just write that we 5SB a tarp over the fort, then.
Ah, also, we should figure out what Paneru, the engineer (IIRC), can do.

@eaglejarl @Velorien @OliWhail if you'd provide us this information, it could help us better plan; we've had her for long enough to figure that out.

For instance, if she had an earth-reshaping technique to create the traditional Pangolin dome (I believe that's how they build them? @faflec, confirm?), it would make 5SB significantly more effective.

Also @faflec, note that the way we apply 5SB is by utilizing Excavation Technique (or pangolin equivalent) to create divots in the structure, then smoothing it over with mud so that it is a different object from the MEW.

Paneru would also be very helpful, I'm sure, in digging escape tunnels. She might also be skilled in trapworks and be able to help us there.

If Pangolins have an earth-based technique to form domes then we don't know of it. I'm unsure why we can't 5SB the MEW directly, is there a particular reason why we need to use mud to cover the wall?

Yes. The supporting seals of a 5SB may not be placed on the same object. Therefore, mud instead.

Ah, right: Should also note that we're having Neji at al use Maneuvers to supply aspects to tag, not using fate points.

I thought Fate Points were used to make use of Aspects? Let me reread the rules a bit.
"Tags" are something that are supplied to aspects created by Maneuvers (specific actions), and allow a single free invocation of the aspect, without expenditure of Fate Points.

Additionally, I'd suggest everyone familiarize themselves with the terrain surrounding the fort to create the aspect "Familiar Terrain" with a tag.

Oh, that's how it works. Alright then.
