I want to do something to the effect of using communion to send messages to the other leaf rookies to the following effect:

Okay everyone, here's our basic analysis of the setup. We expect there to be some twist where the proctors reading the message would disqualify us. Would appreciate Hyuuga to try to get picked early and confirm that with dojutsu. Expect that, as leaf nin were going to get the short end of the stick whenever the mist nin can get away with it. Likely being first to return will lead to favoritism, way to handicap non-mist ninja. During this phase we can act as broadcast nodes for sharing information that you get to us. Would appreciate analysis/coordination/other valuable information. Will prioritize sharing info with people who have broadcast ability, would appreciate them acting as relays. Hyuuga and others can act as receive nodes, reading things people say by pulsing their water/tree walking chakra in <Morse code>. Please prioritize telling group mates, we are going to broadcast to only one person in group at a time.
With priority messages to Ino (to ask as broadcast) Hyuuga and shino (to ask as receive nodes, shino be able to pulse his kikai's drain to communicate with us as well). And shika with an addendum asking for analysis, and knowledge of key members of older leaf teams. So that we can share with them.

As messages come in rebroadcast important info, and regular short summaries of important info.

Edit: Yes, this is a protocol setting up a secret chatroom using bullshit eyes, bugs, pangolin mind jutsu, yamanaka mind jutsu, and shadow jutsu. I wish we could just use discord, but nobody set up a server in game.

Edit 2: As people get their words, ask them to answer vague yes or no questions on the words like "do you suspect your word is a clue of some sort?", "Does your word have anything to do with chakra beasts?", etc.. keep it to yes or no qs and ask vague questions so we don't get any specific words just population information.

Think of it as playing 20 questions with all the words at once, rather than with a single person. We want to understand population information, not individual information.

If you suspect that a question would reveal someone's word (when taken with other questions) don't ask it. If you suspect that your answer to a question would reveal your word, don't answer or just lie. (Note this should be in the instructions we send out)

Also we should keep shika and keiko updated with priority on the population info. In fact Keiko and Nara should be a particularly important link because their analytical powers are useful together. Hazou is lower priority, noburi provides what sensory capability he can and keep us topped up.

We should gracefully shut down as our chakra reserves get more depleted, possibly using Shino/others as a relay.

I don't want to do this. Pangolin techniques are a clan secret and we should not use them with other Leaf ninja unless necessary.

WAIT!

@eaglejarl @OliWhail @Velorien, is PC considered a "trump card" that we aren't supposed to reveal?
At the very least, it's far more effective if people don't know we can use it.

I disagree, partly because comms techniques likely come in many flavours, and by asking others to rebroadcast with their own techniques we mitigate that information significantly. We ask people to register as with us as they establish links with others and push others to help as much as possible.

Information/analysis gathering is super important at this stage, and we're strongly incentivised to cooperate with other leaf teams.

I suspect that we should do some obfucating where we actually like it's a long cast utility jutsu rather than something we can use in combat. Sit down, meditate for a minute before casting, etc...

Edit: This is why I want Ino, the Hyuuga, Shino, and Shika to be the first we ping, they can tell us quickly if there is better reason not to use this. Their own techniques being trump for instance. I fully expect this to need on the fly patching by Keiko and Shika.

I sure hope not, but would like confirmation redardless.

Ooh, we can add a long sequence of seals before and after the active segment to further obfuscate.

[x] Lore Update

We need more time to parse this info and coordinate plans.

The combat implications of this technique are very minimal, not to mention long handseals are possible in combat. Also, right now, the plan is to hide the usage of the technique, trying to prevent anyone from knowing we're using anything at all rather than making it clear we're using a technique (which throwing up a bunch of fake handseals would do). This method of obscuring our handseals runs counter to the other methods we have.

By linking up to people outside of our clan to the message, they know precisely what is capable of the message - i.e. they know that everyone can hear it at once, they know that communication occurs in words of arbitrary detail, they can get an idea of the range, they know it isn't line of sight, they know it's initiated by a single person. That ignore the fact that right now, nobody aside from us knows we can do this, as it is a rather rare ability.

I fall firmly on the "don't let anyone else know we have a telepathy technique" side of things.

If nothing else it would be embarrassing to commit a severe breach of real OPSEC for the sake of marginally improving our chances at completing a test partially about fake OPSEC.

I agree. I almost want to remove all telepathy from the plan aside from Hazou reporting back to Keiko & Noburi after interacting with the instructor.

I don't think "oh look he did a jutsu" is all that dangerous in terms of information given to others, even if people notice us. If its purpose can be divined from hand seals then just throw a blanket over Noburi for a few seconds.

The real danger is in our following behavior being weird/tipping people off, so far as I can see. That said, the hilarity of being able to bypass literally the entire test by going "hey Dad what's the second event?" cannot be overstated. :lol

That would tell them we're using a jutsu, but not necessarily what it is or what it does.

I agree with these statements, which is why I ultimately had Hazou use PC despite learning it has handseals. For the record, I do not plan on removing them from the plan. I really don't like last minute edits - those kill us. The only thing I can think of which would lead to substantial edits right now was to find out additional information (e.g. If Jiraiya has told us "No casting PC" or "No contacting me about things")

Have some training plans:

[X] Training Hazou: Super Spy
Control 4 [14]
Pantokrator's Communion 6 [35]
Living Roots 6 [55]
Regeneration 7 [81]

Save 8.6 XP

This plan is to maximally leverage Hazou's Informational gathering advantages. PC 6, while significantly more expensive than PC 1, makes it a mid-ranged technique rather than a short ranged technique (letting Hazou communicate from 30 meters, rather than 5 meters, which should make stealthy reporting significantly easier. Living Roots 6 also extends the range of his vision underground. I'd expect him to be able to sense ~10 meters per level, so this should extend his range significantly. Regeneration is important as only he and Keiko will be supplying our team with chakra during the exams, and doing things like Hiding Like a Mole, Living Roots, and Pantokrator's Communion will significantly increase our chakra expenditure. Noburi as a battery is good and all, but useless if we need to do something hard. Like keep lines of communication open for a while. This also saves enough XP to spend buy a few 1 point Pangolin Techniques (especially Earth Armor and Tunnelling should we get them).

[X] Training Noburi: Exam Prep
This does pretty much everything we need (i.e. gets PC up to 6). Let's wait to retroactively purchase jutsu until we have a longer time to discuss and think about them (especially as new techniques might? be coming out).

[X] Training Keiko: Comms
Pantokrator's Communion 1 [1]

This lets Keiko telepathically speak to people, which is huge.

If nothing else it would be embarrassing to commit a severe breach of real OPSEC for the sake of marginally improving our chances at completing a test partially about fake OPSEC.
I'd just like to say, this well describes what I see as the primary problem of the thread - optimizing so hard to beat a singular relatively minor challenge that we auto-lose the bigger ones.

Pangolin Techniques (as approved 9/8/17)

Possibly-probably more on the way.

Pantokrator's Communion:
Requirements: Control * 2 Intelligence * 2 Description:
Allows the caster to create a telepathic link with their target(s) via which each party can communicate to each other by intentionally sounding out words in their head with the link in mind.

Range is equal to level * 5 meters, and number of targets they have in a link at the same time is equal to level / 5 rounded up. Keeping a link open requires a Quick Action from the caster each round. Creating a new link to one person or adding people a person to an existing link costs a Combat Action for the caster. The caster must know where the target is to create a link. A given person can only be included in one link at a time and all thoughts sent to the link are heard by all participants -- there is no 'private channel' ability.

Cost: 1 CP per round (3 seconds) per person linked to

Earth Release: Pangolin Earth Armor Technique
Resolve x3, Control x2
The user generates chakra-construct granite scales around their body, forming a layered Doton defense that protects the user from attacks as well as providing an increase in strength to their blows. However, this comes at the cost of speed, as the sheer weight of the defense makes movement extremely difficult.

This technique takes up a Combat Action to activate the jutsu and a Quick Action to maintain it. While active, the user takes a [15 - level / 2] penalty (minimum of 0) to their TacMove. When rolling Taijutsu, the user adds min(Taijutsu, [Earth Armor level / 2]) die to their roll. This is capped at When injured, this technique may defend against up to two A-class wounds or one B-class wound before the technique breaks. It does not stack with the pangolin training jutsu, and the hit to TacMov does affect your initiative. Chakra cost: 20 CP/min

Water Release: Pangolin Bullet Rainstorm Technique
Stamina x2, Control x3
After kneading their chakra, the user fires off dozens of fist-sized water bullets at high speeds towards the enemy.

This Medium Range technique is designed to take down an enemy or a group of enemies quickly, but its high chakra cost prevents this technique from being a sustainable attack. When in combat, the user rolls [level x1.25] against a single enemy, or [level] against multiple enemies.

Chakra cost: 80 CP (without water source), 60CP (with water source)

Lightning Release: Pangolin Flash Technique
Resolve x2, Control x2
The user wraps Lightning Release chakra around their body, forming a shroud that increases both physical and mental speed. This technique takes up a Combat Action to activate the jutsu and a Quick Action to maintain it. While active, the user adds [level / 3] to any physical combat skill (meaning one where the user's strength and speed matter, as opposed to a Fireball ninjutsu or etc), and [level / 2] to each of TacMove and Awareness. The boosts to TM&A do not change the user's initiative on the round in which the jutsu is activated, but they do both apply to subsequent initiatives, meaning that every initiative after that will gain a [Flash level] bonus as long as the jutsu is maintained.

Chakra cost: 100 CP to activate, 10 CP/round to maintain

Wind Release: Pangolin Wind Blade Technique
Stamina x2, Control x3
The user fires blades of Wind Release chakra at any number of enemies. This Medium Range technique is designed to combat multiple enemies at once, and when used will roll [level] against all enemies in range.

Chakra cost: 25 CP

Fire Release: Pangolin Firebolt Technique
Stamina x3, Control x2
Range: Long

The user kneads Fire Release chakra to form a wave of artillery fire capable of blasting enemies from even long distances. If this technique hits it splashes over a five-meter radius, dealing damage to all enemies in Melee range of the target. However, the technique can be dodged or disrupted by sufficiently powerful defenses, particularly Water Release.

When rolling, roll [level] against ALL individuals in Melee range of the target, and create a five-meter radius that deals A-class damage to anyone who stays in the radius at the end of each combat round. If this technique is disrupted or the conflagration put out (e.g., by Water Release techniques) the damage radius is nullified.

Chakra cost: 30 CP

Earth Release: Pangolin Tunnelling Technique
Control x3, Stamina x2

The user expends Doton chakra to 'push' surrounding earth up to 1m away from them, creating a tunnel that they can enter. Since they are underground, a large number of attacks will fail due to being unable to go through the ground (Taijutsu, Weapons, most elemental ninjutsu...).

Unlike its Human Realm counterpart, the created tunnel persists after creation. This has many implications for the technique, including the ability to breathe while underground and the ability for anyone else, allies and enemies alike, to enter the tunnel. Additionally, prolonged tunnelling in the same area will result in collapses, which can harm the user and anyone above the area.

Any underground individual gains [level] additional die in Stealth against enemies aboveground, but takes a [15 - level / 2] penalty (minimum 0) to TacMove. Both underground and aboveground individuals have 0 Awareness with respect to each other, barring unusual senses / sensory jutsu.

Chakra cost: 25 CP/min.

This isn't going to work, I'm afraid. Read the description; you can only link to (ceil(Level/5)) people at once, so at most you're going to have three of you in the link. Each person can only be in one link at a time so you can't build a mesh network. Finally, I see where the confusion comes from about the range, but it's intended to be measured from the caster. If you have Keiko and Noburi in the link with you and the max range is 50m then you can't spread out in a H - K - N line in order to communicate with Noburi 100m away.

We didn't specify anything about dropping people from the link, so I suppose you can drop people out, then add someone else back, but it's a combat action for each person you want to add, and probably for each one you want to drop (@OliWhail, yes?) meaning it takes 4-5 seconds per switch. Conversations like that are going to take a while.

WAIT!

@eaglejarl @OliWhail @Velorien, is PC considered a "trump card" that we aren't supposed to reveal?
That's up to you. It's a clan secret so you can't teach it to anyone, and the pangolins said you aren't allowed to modify it. Still, Ino's mind jutsu are clan secrets and people know she has them.

[X] Training Hazou: Super Spy
[X] Training Noburi: Exam Prep
[X] Training Keiko: Comms

I don't think telepathy has as much 'trump card' potential as mist draining does.

And on the other hand, building up a reputation for Clan Goketsu having a little bit of everything insofar as abilities go (underground movement, telepathy, etc.) would be pretty damned cool.
