IT IS NOT JUST FOR POLITICAL ADVANTAGE

IF MINAMI TELLS ANYONE ABOUT THE MIST DRAIN INCIDENT LEAF GOES TO CIVIL WAR AND IMPLODES IN ON ITSELF

Edit: It's only a step down from actually murdering Minami so it still applies.

There are other ways to keep her silent, probably. If ROOT exists, Minami might be suddenly 'scouted out' for recruitment, and then given the very noble position of ROOT trainee, which by default means she must distance herself from her clan or something.

Alternately, send her out as a long-term spy on another country, keeping her out of the picture for years at a time. Jiraiya mainly needs the Minami under his thumb to handle the Hyuuga, so once he's got a handle on that situation Minami's knowledge isn't a Sword of Damocles.

Keep in mind that the Minami will get far more out of Nikko keeping her mouth shut than if she blabbed. All of a sealmaster's knowledge and the training to use it is a big deal.

If J wants Minami dead we absolutely do not try to save her, because keeping J happy with us and as stress-free as possible is how we stay alive, and we need to be alive to save anyone else. We are not trading Minami for all the other people we will save once our FOOM is underway.

Ultimately, I believe this is why Jiraiya thinks doing things like killing the sailors, and regarding ninja lives as more valuable than civilian lives, and valuing Leaf nin over Mist nin are all important. It's for the greater good. Hazou's idealism seems to currently be myopically focused on the immediate. which is why destroying the world using Hazou is so easy.

We could also arrange for a contract because Hazou wants to be able to do his own research with Kagome's backing without his sealing secrets getting out.

Something like "So, Minami, I was considering that it might be wise to create a contract for Kagome's pledge to your clan -- I don't want there to be any confusion about what's being offered, and also do not want any collaborations we make that are my idea to be included" -- or something more tactful, but you get the point.

*sighs, pinches nose*

The Mist Drain Incident gives Minami more negotiating power based on the threat that the Minami will reveal it. Obviously that's suicidal because the Minami pretty much exist at the whims of the Hokage, but nevertheless it is still some small amount of power.

I could see a pretty obvious way to negate it: admit it when the corrected story comes out.

Yeah. Honestly, her story loses a lot of its power given that she wasn't actually harmed in any way.

Consider how it sounds to other people long after the fact. "He was totally going to kill me, but his teammates held him back," is something you say about a big guy you pissed off in a bar. For someone who wasn't there, didn't see Kagome having to be physically restrained from triggering explosive seals, it all sounds like so much hot air and exaggeration. Even if all facts are admitted to and correct!

"Yes!" Hazō yelped. "But it's not as bad as it sounds! She promised to drop the whole thing from her report in exchange for Kagome-sensei—"

"Whoa!" Noburi exclaimed. "That's, uh, can I cut in here?"

Jiraiya looked at him with an unreadable expression. Noburi apparently took it as consent.

"Sorry to interrupt, sir," Noburi said in a voice more casual than anything Hazō had ever heard from him in real life, "but Hazō's doing his usual thing of trying to wedge his foot so far in his mouth it comes out of his ass. I mean obviously Captain Minami wasn't planning to cover up the attempted murder of a Leaf ninja. That would be crazy. Sure, she did say that at the time, but she was panicking and would have said anything to stop us from killing her. Honestly, we were all feeling that way. You said it yourself—a Minami would never dream of betraying the Hokage."

"Th—That's right," Akane said. "Afterwards, we spent ages talking about how best to break it to you, sir, and she never once suggested pretending nothing happened."

"Exactly," Noburi nodded his head rapidly. "All completely innocent discussion. Hazō there has just proved how much phrasing and delivery matter when dealing with sensitive issues, and we couldn't afford to misrepresent anything the way he nearly did."

Akane opened her mouth to deliver further reassurances, while Hazō silently made a note never to say anything ever again.
Big thank you to the @Velorien and the other QMs for not letting our badly-expressed explanation of Minami's agreement not to "press charges" end up in another killbox situation. Noburi really saved us (and Minami) there

E: I figured that they sure do get harangued when they don't help us out like this, just wanted to appreciate when they do :)

Honestly, my first reaction was "why did we end up saying it so stupidly!?! What stat do we have to increase to make us not an idiot??" But then I looked at the plan text and saw:
  • We stopped that from happening, and convinced Minami to not report either the clan secret or the murder attempt.
    • Kagome has sworn fealty to Minami, and agreed to share his skills/knowledge to her. And to get therapy.
    • Kagome has also threatened to kill everyone Minami loves if she betrays us.
    • Minami has agreed to downplay the incident (such that Jiraiya wouldn't realize the full gravity of the situation).

And it really does look like we're throwing Minami under the bus...

In my defense I was literally quoting what the QMs said here:
Actually, it is, insofar as that report is going straight to the Hokage's desk. Minami is effectively saying that she isn't prepared to outright lie to the Hokage by concealing the incident, but that she's willing to downplay it so that he won't realise the full gravity of the situation. There could still be consequences for her if Jiraiya then found out the truth and decided she had lied to him by omission.

Goo Bomb
Creates a zone of sticky material covering a radius set at creation, up to 3m (a maximum 6m diameter, for those of you keeping track at home).
Rolls N dice vs the TacMov of anyone or anything caught in the radius for the purposes of determining whether they take a subsequent TacMov penalty, as with Syrup Trap. N is still being discussed.
So what was N supposed to be, anyway?

Thanks for the reminder, we had completely forgotten about this.

[X] Action Plan: Hazou kills himself
Exactly what it says on the tin.
You forgot the bold, the shouty-caps, and the radioactive-green coloring.

@eaglejarl @Velorien @OliWhail Where are we, and what in-game time is it?
Did we get a telescope?
It's 1pm 3pm on September 20. (The timeline doc is updated.) You have completed your resupply and had a hot meal at a food stall. Everyone is still pretty exhausted from the run here; the current plan is to leave, travel at a relaxed pace until sundown (which I believe is about 6pm), then bunker down in your skytower and get some serious sleep. In the morning it's back to full speed to rejoin the others, but not trying to do it without stopping for rest breaks as needed. Akane suggested this and Noburi said "Makes sense to me", but you could probably talk them into doing a few other things before heading out. They are both anxious to get out of the city and aren't going to be willing to sleep in Leaf.

There were no telescopes or spyglasses available.

Reusing my previous Action Plan for the parts that weren't done this update.

[X] Action Plan: Unsplitting the Party

  • General:
    • Follow Akane's lead while she's our sub-team leader. Follow Minami's lead after we regroup.
    • Be polite at all times. Especially to people who could make life difficult for us (e.g., Hyuuga, Uchiha).
    • Try to avoid triggering Minami's insecurities.
      • She's team leader, but she inherited a team who treats her as an outsider. Avoid reminding her of this.
    • When moving, minimize chatter in favor of alertness.
  • Main Questline:
      • Skywalk back to the team.
        • Relaxed pace until sundown (~5hr), then sleep in a Skytower. Set watches.
        • The next day we run at 100% speed but with breaks. Try to make it without bunkering down but don't force it.
      • Check in with them.
        • Were there issues with the Nagi Island contact?
        • Did anything else happen of note?
    • Continue the mission.
      • We've done this so many times, just keep doing what we've been doing.
      • Make sure to be careful since Mist is nearby. And Cloud, as we move further north.
  • Complete an After-Action Report.
    • Do the report after we regroup with the team, as time permits.
    • Keep in mind Minami still considers us to be the Cold Stone Killers/outsiders.
      • Disguising the use of secret abilities (Pangolins, Mist Drain) so we might not need to kill witnesses.
        • Disguise Pangolins using physical coverings or Henge. Ask Pangolins in future?
        • Apply Misterators first, then Pangolins attack while LOS is blocked with Mist.
      • Timing between the air-team landing and the boat team was off.
        • Not a problem this time, but could have been one if the enemy was stronger.
        • Leave Sodai's Prism with Keiko's team; visual for ambush beginning.
        • Learn Whispers on the Wind, useful for signaling for ambush.
        • Maybe have Panda be part of the air-team and be unsummoned beforehand as a signal?
      • Better knowledge of the Pangolin's personal combat ability for better diagnosis of enemy ninja capabilities.
  • Talk with Noburi about research into quantifying chakra.
    • Talk with him as time permits.
    • Ask him if there has been research into this in the past. If not, continue.
      • Improve combat efficiency.
      • Gives ability for non-sensors to measure their chakra levels.
      • Gives ability for ninja to determine minimum chakra levels to use techniques.
      • Gives ability for ninja to calculate chakra usage during combat (techniques and/or chakra boost).
      • Standardize the "chakra point".
      • Determine amount of chakra used when "chakra boosting" or casting a jutsu.
      • Determine effects of skill on "chakra boosting" or casting a jutsu.

Things to do:
  • Conversation with Keiko re: Pangolins.

Before we leave leaf should do something romantic with Akane since she basically said she wanted to marry Hazō

"How long was I asleep?" Hazō croaked, his throat rough from screaming. Akane wordlessly passed him a cup of cool water; Hazō gulped it down gratefully.

"About two hours," Akane said softly. "Do you want to talk about your dream?" She reached out slowly and lay a hand on his leg, offering quiet comfort without crowding him. It was never wise to startle a groggy ninja, especially not one who was still shaking off the effects of a screaming nightmare.
@eaglejarl @Velorien @OliWhail The timeline suggests that Hazou only slept 15 minutes, while this suggests he was asleep for about 2 hours. Unless he fell asleep mid-watch (ouch)?

I'm certainly with this. I want her (and Jiraiya, and a bunch more) dead anyways, so I certainly wouldn't want to save her.

@huhYeahGoodPoint Would just like to thank you for doing your best to keep us on task. I appreciate it.

That said, we need to make time for conversations with Minami, Kagome, and Keiko when we return. They're all going to be shaken, and this is our opportunity to impress Minami.
