Are we allowed to tell Akane that we're about to become leaf nin? If so...

  1. Tell Akane everything that's been going on.
  2. Say "Your dad doesn't want you dating a missing nin, but I still want to spend time with you in the meantime. So let's break up for the few weeks until I'm official, hang out as best friends, then get back together as soon as I'm wearing a headband."
  3. Have Akane tell her dad we broke up until such a time as we can pull that rabbit out of our hat.
  4. Become a leaf nin.
  5. Get back together.

Akane: "That is a most unyouthful deception, Hazou-sensei."

It's not deceitful at all.

It's telling mr Ishihara the truth: we won't be Akane's boyfriend until we can become leaf nin.

That we expect that to happen sooner than he does is entirely irrelevant to the truthfulness of the explanation.

It's more about operational security than anything else. Can we tell him that we are becoming Leaf-nin?

I'm glad that Ino and Akane seem to get along.

I will point out that Ino made the wrong assumption -- that clan stuff is why Hazou hasn't seen her, not her father's request. Frankly, I doubt that would ever occur to her without us leading her into it, considering her previously-shown opinions on civilians. Whether that is relevant to her assessment is up in the air.

However, that said, we could always ask Ishihara the senior if it's okay if we deliver a letter to her to at least inform her that we're here and not intentionally ignoring her. There will, of course, be a portion of the letter that he can feel free to read, and a smaller portion that contains classified information (and emotionally-charged information too but shh) that he cannot.

Jiraiya was able to track down three potential sites. The first, the agent assured you after some pressure from Jiraiya, was definitely not once the site of a secret laboratory where a diabolical missing-nin once experimented on helpless civilians, and does not have huge unexplored catacombs beneath it from whence the wailing of children and the snarls of unspeakable abominations can be heard on moonless nights.
Ohhh man, our own dungeon? We can farm it for XP and loot!... wait, this isn't that kind of quest. Still! Very tempting.
The second once was a clan compound, but was unwisely built right next to the Forest of Death, surrounded by it on two sides. The minor clan who lived there disappeared one day, and nobody else has been willing to take their place and entrust their survival to protective seals which clearly didn't do the job last time.
Ooh, tempting in its own way; a fresh source of chakra beasts!!
Jiraiya is deeply apprehensive about the idea of you (as in Hazō specifically) meeting his godson, but in the end can't think of a reason to actually forbid it, and even if he did, it's not like he could keep the two of you apart for any length of time. Fortunately, for him, Naruto is apparently due to head out on a mission, and the family dinner will at least have to await his return.
Poor Jiraiya. You just know Hazou and Naruto are going to give him a new level of headache together.

Why don't we ask Mari-sensei about this whole schtick and what we should do about it?
Not what we should do; that's laying the onus on the QMs a little much, I'd say.

We should get Noburi to work on headache medicine. You know, so Jiraiya's head doesn't explode.

Can we please, please not turn meeting with Akane into some clever trick, to show off how clever we are?

Just deal in good faith, send Mari with a hello and a note, she can run circles around Akane's dad, and sending our big sister-figure (not mom, we have one already) shows that we're serious.

I don't believe Mari would sabotage us. Of course if she says no it's a no, but I don't think she'll turn down a request like this.

If we're serious about Akane we should aim to play the long game, that includes being decent to her family.

If we're just stringing her alone we should still play nice and not piss off civilians. They have ways of their own to make things difficult, I'm sure.

You're trying to rules lawyer here, but it doesn't work that way. Akane's father specifically said "But until you do, you stay away from her." Not 'unless you break up with her', just plain stay away from her until we've delivered our miracle. There's no real wiggle room there.

It's better in the long run if we deal with Akane's father in good faith, not try to work around it by seeing Akane with an obviously fake break up.

On the one hand, having Oro-tan's old hideout for our own sounds very appealing, and it sounds like it has tons of space built to handle all the mad science Hazou and Noburi will be doing.

But on the other hand, we're being offered the option to have Jiraiya move in right next to the Hyuga and Byakugan-proof the whole thing. I'm sorry, but we can't afford to miss a chance like this, it's too perfect! Not to mention that it's apparently a very nice place that people just don't happen to like living in, given the see-through-walls neighbours.

And I agree on having Mari go visit Akane and explain the situation to her. It won't violate our promise in letter or in spirit and it avoids the risk of Akane feeling ignored and betrayed. Knowing her, she'll take Mari's message as inspiration to train even harder until Hazou's promise is fulfilled.

I'm on board with this approach.

Mari-sensei is also his mother figure and soon-to-be adopted mother.

Am I the only one ok with breaking up with Akane? Her obsession is just plain unhealthy, and it isn't going to work out anyway. Best to go ahead and get it over with so she can move on. It's only going to get worse from here.

I'm not sure clan genealogy works that way -- you can, assumedly, adopt someone into a clan without placing them in the clan structure as family.

Akane is best girl and we will talk to her about that. :p

It's, like, using a go-between is a very traditional approach. Right out of a romance book, really, and so is writing letters. I'm reasonably sure Akane will appreciate the thoughtfulness, though, granted, I've been wrong about her before.

It also casts us as the soul of propriety, and shows that we can be relied on to deal in good faith. That's just good rep.

Why isn't it going to work out?

How sure are we that Leaf's anti Byakugan seals don't have a back door that the clan elders can see through?

I don't see how my suggestion is
some clever trick, to show off how clever we are
and not just being as open and honest as we can be with everyone involved.

And immediately before that he said to break up with her. The "stay away" was in response to us indicating that we won't break up. So if we tell him that we intend to just be friends until we can become official, with Akane (who can't lie to him) confirming that, then my model of him isn't terribly unhappy with that outcome.

My model of Akane would be unhappy with that outcome, though.
