Noodling with different orders of ops.
  • Contact Tsunade first.
    • If she is not in Leaf, wait on her to go to Leaf or tell her come straight to us?
    • If she is in Leaf, get sitrep.
      • No Akatsuki.
        • Go to Leaf to give them runes. With force dome, ninja radar and iron earth they can shut down Akatsuki spies from passing messages. We can take Naruto and more forces.
          • Someone stays behind to activate runes + keep opsec.
      • Two Akatsuki.
        • Go to give runes. With force domes, ninja radar and iron earth, Naruto can stay behind to stop retaliation for attacking the fortress if word gets back before we return from the rift.
          • One force dome for the city and one for Akatsuki? Spares?
          • Naruto activates runes.
  • Get the surgery.
    • Whenever Orochimaru says fits best for recovery time.
  • Prep runes where least chakra limited.
  • Go to rift to prep less mobile runes on site. Prioritize giving Hazō max crafting time.
  • Assess the situation. Move runes into place. Attack the fortress.
Orochimaru said going to Leaf takes one day. Going to O'uzu takes three more. Travel faster by riding, swapping in summons when tired from running?

Let's start dooming.

I think the worst-case outcome is that we gank Hidan and Deidara at great cost (Tsunade dies) only to find the Rift scar in a state that makes it obvious Itachi has been gone for a while and has made significant progress finding Pain.

And also Kisame and Konan destroy Leaf.

Who has something worse?

I'm in favor of putting all the good ideas and clarifying questions to Oro and so forth into the plan, even if that puts us at negative XP this turn. At least all the ones without discussed potential negatives.
Put it in a plan, and also try summoning Cannai, and I'll vote.

We were told CR 38 was sooooo close. Now we have CR39. Let's do this.
Plus, kinda silly to buy CR 39 then not try it.

The others are (hopefully) asleep right now, but based on my understanding of the events of the chapter I would assume that yes, Hazō would have downloaded the seals that Orochimaru used. That is ponwog90.

I know literally no-one else cares about this, but I am positively salivating over the prospect of getting Orochimaru-level privacy seals! Maybe it's a holdover from the days of Jiraiya praising us whenever we did showed growth in our OPSEC preparations?

It's just so cool! An array of dozens of seals placed on a ring around the user, creating a barrier of blurry shapes and quiet buzzing.

And that table! Where are those symbols on it? Do they mean anything? Do they provide some sort of protections from kamis or some sort of boost to those sitting at the table?

I'm so full of wonder!

EDIT: Yes, we were a clone and didn't get an imprint, but what about in future visits? I'm so excited by the possibilities!

Orochimaru could turn out to have been plotting a betrayal all along, and use the runes he's not telling us to kill everyone who shows up at the rift battle except himself.

If they detect us when we're setting things up a few miles from the fortress, the battle could start before RERs, clones, and summons are ready, at which point it's pretty likely that all the Leaf forces present die, Hazō included, and quite possibly the rest of Leaf gets massacred in retaliation.

Itachi could flicker his sharingan on during the leadup to the attack, see that there's going to be a huge explosion on his position soon, and use the Yata Mirror to reflect it back, killing anyone manning the RERs and also destroying active runes and thereby risking a runic failure.

Armageddon Initiative could win a another vote, at which point the QMs might decide to implement it.

Amity collapses without the guarantors. More things than just the dragons escape the great seal. And itachi/kisame are not around to help kill those.

Updated plan:
took some notes from @coldcutconvict's opder of operations
ask Cannai about more dogs.
ask toad sages to look at Chakra Capacitor.
ask Oro if he wants take the time to Bioseal Hazou given that we're teaming up with Leaf.
a bunch of wording tweaks.

[X] Action Plan: Ok
Wordcount: <299
Duration: <12 hours.
  • Let's do this with Leaf
    • If Tsunade suspects Akatsuki are in Leaf, Leave Naruto behind as cover.
      • Benching Naruto in exchange for benching Konan and Itachi/Kisame is a great deal.
    • Oro, Uplift, Tsunade, possibly Naruto, Leaf summoners and a bunch of chakra donors assault the rift.
    • Is it worth slowing down to bioseal Hazou if we're teaming up with Leaf?
      • How long would the bioseals+recovery take? would Hazou be able to research at full pace during this time?
      • Is summoning Cannai worth the delays if we have the rest of Leaf's firepower?
      • Would SC bypass Hidan's blood sense?
    • The Rift-opening sequence that Sasori stole requires Jinchuriki-level reserves to use.
      • So Kisame is probably at the rift site, leaving Itachi and Konan in Leaf
    • FYI, We'll need a LOT of substrate.
      • 4 stacks of 5 RER2.0 takes 12500 units alone.
    • BTW, spacetime effects on 7th path are what's causing the great seal to degrade.
  • Cannai
    • In the morning, attempt to Summon Cannai
    • Ask him if there are other powerful Dogs he thinks might agree to fight in the Riftwar.
      • Kakashi's personal combat summon perhaps? She fought against the Dragons.
      • Also helpful:
        • A troop of jounin-jevel dogs with low CR relative to their combat skills
        • Dogs with powerful mentally damaging attacks (for Itachi's SC)
        • Dogs with strong single-target lockdown effects(to incapacitate Hidan)
      • Would Cannai be willing to approach such dogs on our behalf, or direct us to meet them?
  • Noburi
    • Can you summon a sage to examine the Chakra Capacitor?
      • We need to know if it's safe for you to drain.

As always, feedback, ideas, and wordsmithing are all welcome.
We've got a spare wordcount right now, so hit me up.

The worst-case outcome is that Orochimaru was killed by Akatsuki some time ago and this "Orochimaru" is actually Itachi soft-interrogating Hazou to figure out what weapons he's made against them.

...we win the battle, secure the rift, and as soon as we get it open Zabuza comes out and kills us.

Perhaps the final note on why he is exceptionally dangerous: Itachi is particularly attentive to the secrets of the world. I have to assume this relates to whatever revelation caused his particular exit from Leaf and the unusual modification he made to his own bloodline, but I suspect that he spent years single-mindedly pursuing long-forgotten ancient truths. I do not know what he learned, nor have I seen him use ninjutsu retrieved from such places. However, I am certain he attained great power from his adventures – at the very least, old relics of which I know of two. First is a sword, summoned from the liquid within a gourd, which seals away the souls of that which it touches. Second is a mirror which can absorb and reflect any ninjutsu.

Doesn't the mirror work on jutsu, not seals?
It was described as working on jutsu, so it probably doesn't work on seals. But we really don't know much about it, nor did Oro seemingly, so in a pessimistic scenario it wouldn't shock me if it turned out to actually work on some broader class of chakra effects that includes some seals

Edit: my biggest concern represented by that section isn't the Yata Mirror specifically, though, but rather that battles are volatile and Hazō dying and/or active runes getting destroyed could happen in any number of ways.

Or worse, Kagome is actually Itachi (who can split into multiple persons). Always has been, in fact.

This would explain why Itachi was fond of us enough to let us live so many times! /s

Reminds me of an old Omake:
WORDS FOR THE WORD THRONE! (Somewhat half-baked but hey, it made me giggle and I'm tired.)

Mini-Omake: Constant Vigilance!

Mari discreetly checked the messenger seal on the flap concealed on the inner surface of her bra, like she'd done a million times since this damned missing nin business started.

Akane butted into her field of view from the side. "Eh, Mari-sensei, what's that? Didn't Kagome-sensei say never to put seals on fabric, 'cuz they don't come out even and stuff?"

Mari froze. The rest of the team was turning to look at her, as if in slow motion. She had to act now, take out the biggest threat - Keiko.

As Zabuza dropped his petite but well-endowed redhead henge and returned to his full, towering height, he swung his mighty blade overhead from out of a storage seal tattooed on his back -

Only to have it blocked by an identical sword, as Zabuza poofed out from Kei's similarly petite form.

There was a moment of stunned silence.

"Wait, you guys are Zabuza too??" asked Noburi.

"C'mon, seriously! I thought I was special!" whined Hazou.

"Oh unholy Jashin this is ridiculous. Seriously, what are the chances that we're all Zabuza?" asked Mari-Zabuza

"I'm not." The one that looked like Akane raised her hand. "I'm actually Itachi Uchiha," she said, managing to keep a completely straight face.

Everyone shared a good laugh at that. Then Itachi dropped his henge and killed them all, because that's what happens when you let your guard down in a rational ninja deathworld.

You die.

Sleep tight

Opposed to this unless someone points me to us having tested whether Noburi can sense the chakra in/around Capacitor Runes. It takes up several hours and hundreds of CP to shape the blank for extremely minimal expected gain.
Ah, yep. Missed that, thanks.

I wonder if we could just keep a 24/7 watch on the rift scar and then RER-barrage Pain if he comes out.

...we win the battle, secure the rift, and as soon as we get it open Zabuza comes out and kills us.
[X] Surrender to the mercy of Zabuza

Seal effects are almost always chakra based, so I think it's more likely to work on those than not.
Hmm, I've spent ~10 minutes trying to find the latest on how seals work. Last I remember they were sorta chakra-based? But some of the effects aren't normal ninjutsu effects (e.g. Air Dome, 5SB, Storage). I remember @eaglejarl had a PONWOG explanation that he eventually retracted, but now I can't find it.

Latest post was Velorien stating all permanent effects weren't chakra and all temporary effects were chakra constructs. No link on hand but that's the current WoG.

Here's the post, for reference:

Whether seal effects are chakra effects depends on the seal. As a rule, permanent creations (e.g. MEW from the ground) are not chakra effects and do not register to Noburi's senses if time has passed after their creation, though they may contain residual chakra temporarily. Constructs that disappear after the seal ceases to operate are always chakra effects.
