Question. Presumably we haven't been dumping very many food scraps into the Forest of Death during the famine, which lasted for a decent amount of time. Has there been any observable impact on the population of chakra beasts?
Of course not. Ask the mutated magical predators which were being pushed to the margins by the chakra golem Jiraiya was keeping a personal eye on, remember?

Nope, though there may have been one on the population of estate civilians.

Disclaimer: this statement brought to you by Velorien being evil rather than by an actual census, which would require an action plan.

[x] Action Plan: Sealing, Scrip, and Commiseration

@RandomOTP would you mind adding these:

Other (offscreen)
  • Help Kagome finish dimensionalism seals (give him bonuses to his rolls).
  • Get Asuma's okay, ask Noburi to begin training Akane to summon
  • Timeskip to when HOWS need replacing.
And I'm gonna be real sad if the Tower joke in my plan doesn't get used someday...but it isn't really worth the word count to add it to another plan :p

I don't mind the first or the last, but the second one seems a bit early don't you think? We don't have a scroll to give her...

(At work right now, I'll add it later tonight when I'm slashing the word count while, hopefully, preserving the intent/tone)

but the second one seems a bit early don't you think? We don't have a scroll to give her...
So basically my tenuous hope for the next string of updates is this:

1: Aside from interpersonal stuff, we finish Necro seals this update (Velorien)
2: Hazou and Kagome return to the Rift with new seals and possibly new companions to investigate (maybe bring Ino or something? her powers could be useful). Probably also need to replace HOWS this update. (Eaglejarl)
3: Hazou and Kagome + whoever else we want to bring to Isan then trek to Isan in order to fulfill Kagome's role in the Yoshida deal, IE court the Yoshida or whatever. While there, Hazou can construct another solid model (perhaps a bit worse than the Leaf one, but still something to work with) and bring the Yoshida into the DRAGONWAR. Additionally, Hazou can arrange for the Takahashi Clan to teach Kagome to Summon during his stay. Hazou can leave at any time after this, though Kagome will have to stay for a while for his training and Yoshida obligations. (Velorien)
4: Hazou continues working on DRAGONWAR stuff etc, and maybe do some missions for more specialized Summons. Once his injuries are fully healed, we go get the Squirrel Scroll for Kagome and the Otter Scroll for Akane. (Likely several updates)

Having Akane working on the Summoning Stunt during this time is gonna save us a lot of time later. If Asuma doesn't object to teaching her, that is, which I'm not sure why he would since we're doing it with our own manpower and our own time. It's basically a clan secret to share amongst ourselves imo.

Plan changes below. Slight word alterations to cut down on word count, added some of @Shrooms's ideas. Leaving the Summoning Training out of the plan for now, since it'll cut into FOOM and we don't even have a scroll to give.

Any suggestions for the conversation with Yuno would be wondrously helpful. I'm tempted to have everyone in the room with us while we talk to Yuno (so that they can chime in as appropriate) but I worry that the "Formal Apology" segment would spark an argument between Mari and Kei. Which would be disastrous, for the obvious reasons. (I suppose we could say "everyone but Mari" but that strikes me as both cruel to Mari and inefficient (Mari understands people and could be massively helpful)).

Also, does anyone have any ideas regarding anti-counterfeit measures for scrip? I feel like what I've listed are fairly obvious and will have already been implemented.

[x] Action Plan: Sealing, Scrip, and Commiseration
Words: tbd

Sanity Check with Akane, Mari, Kei, Snowflake, and Noburi
  • Coordinate with aforementioned people to adhere to Isan Traditions (or Leaf-substitutes)
    • Attire, decor, seating, food placement, etc
    • Practice conversation with aforementioned people to encode in Iron Nerve
  • Yuno, thanks for waiting.
    • Please be patient/understanding as we try to verbalize this.
    • We're your friend because we like you...
      • Tone: platonic respect and admiration
    • Strength of character
      • Been through much, but you're unbroken. You find the strength to laugh and to love, to feel compassion and empathy (ex: righteous indignation at Leaf's treatment of Kei post-outing)
      • Many ninja numb hearts and silence souls (ex: Noda drinks to forget), but you have not. We see it in your soft smile when you look at Noburi, the way you laugh with Akane.
    • Brave
      • Fearless in combat, feircely protecting your teammates.
      • Journeyed to Leaf when Isan was led astray. You left Isan and traversed to Leaf because your home needed you to.
        • We know what it means to traverse the wild, and you did it alone.
    • Loyal
      • Sought to save Isan, after all the years of injustice and wrongs they inflicted upon you
      • Love Isan for what it could be (what it should be), rather than what it is
        • Internally: Ami about Mist
    • Passionate
      • Love your country, your culture, and Noburi with a zeal that never fails to amaze.
        • Many ninja are afraid to feel because of the vulnerability that it creates
      • Heart loves passionately and vibrantly, even after all it has been through
        • Your heart may be beaten and bruised (perhaps even scarred) but we look at you and see a woman unbroken, a person undefeated.
        • We see our beloved sister, a ninja worthy of our respect, and someone deserving of our admiration. We see Goketsu Yuno, someone with whom we are proud to share a name.
    • Formal Isan Apology of Abiding Remorse
      • We're sorry
      • We abandoned you the first time, and we were wrong to do so. We played no small part in a deed that hurt your heart.
      • We know that no mere apology can be enough.
      • Please, allow us to prove our sincerity by the consistency of our actions going forward.
    • A Question...
      • Public ceremony was wonderful, but what about another ceremony?
      • Private, Family-only, no external political influence on the ritual, done properly in Isan-Style (as much as is possible, anyway) with Tapirs imported from Isan?
      • Clarification:
        • Not atonement for our wrongs, but our attempt as your clan head and brother-in-law to give you the wedding ceremony you deserve, as close to the traditions of Isan as possible
        • Not a demand, or an order, but an offer freely given.
    • We know what it is to be a stranger in a strange land...
      • Commiserate about the shared strangeness of Leaf (food, euphemisms, rituals, etc)
        • ex: "did you know they knock on wood?"
    • Coordinate with aforementioned people to order religious texts and other "Isanese Family Essentials" for Yuno
  • Offscreen
    • Asuma
      • Tower Scrip Anti-Counterfeit Measures
        • Label each scrip with a verification number
        • Label scrip with stamp of approval (created by cryptography to prevent easy counterfeits)
    • Help Kagome finish dimensionalism seals (give bonuses to rolls).
    • Timeskip to when HOWS need replacing.

Special paper formula. Special ink. Maybe even gold ink.

This makes it easier for civilians to check if it's real because paper's difficult or nigh impossible to replicate and the texture should be fairly unique. Gold ink would be further verification if it's possible to get it shine light.

Learning new elemental affinities
PSA: Rules change! Collect bonus!

Various people (most recently @Shrooms) pointed out that the elemental affinity stunts are priced high enough that they aren't worth buying, yet for some reason there are still tons of jōnin and S-rankers who have multiple elements. We got some good suggestions on how to fix this issue and we're doing it. Don't worry, the change is to your benefit.

Narratively, learning a new chakra affinity is very difficult. It needs a good teacher who knows the element, and a lot of disciplined study where you meditate to get a feel for the new element, and attempt, over and over, to execute a small handful of its jutsu until you finally make it work.

Mechanically:
  1. You must find a teacher who has the element. This generally isn't hard if you live in a ninja village.
  2. You need to find one or more jutsu of the element. Typically the teacher will supply these.
  3. You need to put in 30 days of training over the course of 90 calendar days. Narratively, it's assumed that you've been doing a lot of work in advance.
  4. Each day of training is 4 hours. More doesn't help, less doesn't count.
  5. Over the course of your training you spend 1000 XP, 30 XP per day with the balance due on the last day.
  6. If you do not complete your 30 days within the 90 day window then your XP investment is lost and you need to start over. You weren't studious enough and the basics got mushy, chakra is weird, blah blah blah, whatever, it's a balance thing.
  7. As soon as you complete the training you get 500 XP back, which must be immediately spent on one or more jutsu of the relevant element. (The ones you were studying.) Any that are not immediately spent are lost. In-universe this sudden acquisition of levels is justified as "you've spent so long learning the jutsu that you know it inside out, and now you are actually able to power it."
Practicing for a new element requires that you have chakra regeneration capacity so that you can see how it feels to transform the chakra while your totals are changing. That means that Shadow Clones cannot be used for this study. Tobirama was very aware of this issue, spent a great deal of time trying to fix it, and was not able to. Nor was Hiruzen or any other technique hacker who ever looked into it. It's safe to assume that this is a quirk of chakra that cannot be gotten rid of or worked around.

...so how does this work with Wakahisa, who can't regenerate chakra? Are they stuck with their native affinity?

The most promising opportunities for this are EM and PEA, both ridiculous jutsu of an element only one person on the team has. Akane in particular would get really good mileage out of PEA and its ability to almost no-sell incoming physical attacks, and anyone else who learns Fire element can become a walking talking nuclear arsenal with EM.

Other benefits include "really good buff" Flame Aura, "Uplift in a can" MEW, "Target: yes" Water Dragon Bullet, and probably a few other sweet elemental jutsu I'm forgetting.

"Gaku, I need to know how many warm bodies are in the immediate vicinity."

"..."

"Yes, I heard it as soon as I said it. Just arrange a census and stop looking at me that way."

"Is this something which should be run by misses Akane, Ino, and/or Mitarashi?"

"No, no, and oh hell no. Just put together a list and stop looking at me like that."

And so "The Orgy That Never Was" became "The Orgy That Will Be"

Quick note: @Shrooms was the most recent person to bring this elemental natures thing to our attention but they made a point in Discord of saying that it was actually @Insert 's idea. Apologies for incorrect attribution.
