Here's a plan. About 3 scenes.

[X] Action Plan: Soul-Snatching Stinkers and Puppy Power
Word Count: 297

Ami:
Welcome, Ami.
  • In-law???...(Hazou didn't marry Snowflake? Right?)
  • Ask about her whereabouts and welfare.
  • Summon some puppies. She'll like them.
  • Confirm and update her on the Dragonwar and Great Seal situation thus far.
  • How's the KEI? Are we still friendly?
  • Any feedback.

Personal:
Hazou's willing to pursue any anti-dragon angles at this point. Solve Ami's puzzle: The poetry of Karasu Goemon.
  • It's an intimate gift, so try to figure it out on privately first.
    • Ask Kagome's help with care and only if needed.
    • If this is a promising avenue, discuss further with Kagome.
    • Ami?
    • Uchiha?
      • Discuss bringing Sasuke in for collaboration on (possible) Karusu seals? If they can be adapted for Dragons, then Itachi's Crows are game too...

Haru:
He's shown talent in intelligence work, but needs polishing.
  • Hazou support's Haru's investigation wherever the facts lead or if he wants to end it at this point... (dead end?)
  • Also, good initiative in establishing an intel network.
  • But he needs to cool it with the killing the sub-bosses and be more discrete -Asuma's words.
    • Hazou needs to be informed.
  • But besides that, good work. Where should the Goketsu aim resources at? Maybe the Intel network can help?
    • Extra Seal Bank support?
    • Distribute Storage Seals (Food, Water, burning logs) to the most desperate?
      • How about gathering Ice into storage seals?
    • Get in contact with Kon Ai. Does the hospital need anything?
      • Any storage seals, ice, water, food.
      • How's the Goketsu clinic doing?
  • Submit a bi-monthly (1st and 15th day) report on Leaf opinions on Goketsu rep as well. Who's still friendly or not.
    • Estate ninja
    • KEI
    • Other clans
    • Merchants
    • Any personal visits Hazou should make? Letters?
  • Any Suggestions?
Background:
  • Ask Kagome about hunting Sky squid to bolster food reserves. Still up there in winter?
EDIT: Made a lot of changes.

So, how do these motives lead to wildly inconsistent levels of success?
  • Hazou works best in closed systems, where he can account for everything. Conversely, his goals for the world are complex.
    • Generally, Goketsu's strategy has been Hazou generating many ideas of varying quality. Those who grasp the bigger picture better than Hazou sift through plans and make them viable.
      • When his advisors aren't available, Hazou usually opts not to take action. This means he doesn't create new problems, but it does mean he can miss flaws in ongoing plans, and old ideas can come back to bite him.
        • In the case of scrip, the idea was approved, and Hazou was content to put it on the backburner, seeing that it was successful. His mistake: he should've continued seeking advice, and someone could have pointed out the exploitable weakness he was creating.
@MadScientist @faflec What do you think of this?

I think that's way too complicated. Hazo improvise. He hardly has any chessmaster-like strategies or long term strategic vision, but he does have 'operating principles' and 'tendencies'. What does Hazo do with civilians? He adopted some of the needy, but he also looked for talent.

Hazo will absolutely take action when the situation calls for it, like when he improvise a course of action for the bank run.

Also, the whole scrip printing thing was Mari's idea. Hazo was actually cognizant of the effect of massive printing once he proposed to pay off loans and debts of people.

Was thinking it should be something that Haru provides every two or three weeks. Should be a brief informational summary. However he did the report is up to him. We should also provide a rationale, like the fact that Hazo doesn't know what's going on outside his immediate priority.

Hows this? I think it gets the point across.
Submit a bi-weekly report on Leaf opinions on Goketsu rep as well. You're blind at the moment. Who's still friendly or not.

While I don't want to vote for the plan (it has a few elements I don't think are good ideas) I think it has some great stuff in it that shouldn't fall off the radar even if it doesn't make it into this cycle.
Summon some puppies. She'll like them.
This is a singularly brilliant idea.
How's the KEI? We still friendly?
Yeesh, I hadn't even thought about this, but...it's been a minute. Keiko might be another person to ask.
Propose an exchange: a schooling program for the puppies and combat simulation training for those who are older in exchange for any gold or silver.
I'm not sure he'll go for this. I'm additionally a little unsure that there wouldn't be pushback from Asuma. We got ourselves in trouble minting money once. That it would be spending gold might or might not make that better, especially given how destablized the economy is right now. The useful part of the gold standard is that gold is scarce and you (generally) don't stumble on a huge quantity of it out of nowhere.

I think Cannai probably also understands the value of gold, and 'we'll contract with and train dogs for you' would have to be a huge endeavor to make it worth his while.
  • You support Haru's investigation wherever the facts lead. Also, good initiative in establishing an intel network.
  • But he needs to cool it with the killing the sub-bosses and be more discrete -Asuma's words.
    • You also can not be blindsided.
I think that this is an important conversation to have with Haru in the short term. We can be clear that we didn't chuck him under the bus, and that we have his back, but also hopefully provide him with a good reason to be more open with us.

I'm very open to take suggestions. I did think we might be some inflationary problems as well with the gold... But wasn't the problem that Asuma confiscated Ryo too fast?

I was thinking of delivering the gold directly to the Tower so they had a reserve.

(Verify with Mari, Ino, Keiko, Akane, Shikamaru that this plan isn't suicidal, reputationally or literally)
Added the Avengers: Endgame portal scene but with people giving Hazou advice

Why do these motives lead to wildly inconsistent levels of success?
  • Hazou works best in closed systems, where he can account for everything. Conversely, his goals for the world are complex.
    • Generally, Goketsu's strategy has been Hazou generating many ideas of varying quality. Those who grasp the bigger picture better than Hazou sift through plans and make them viable.
      • When his advisors aren't available, Hazou hesitates to enact new major plans.
  • He can struggle with big picture, but he excels at rapidly taking in and adapting to new information. This improvisation helps manage crises of his own creation and those that befell Leaf, which is why he seemed to come out ahead.
Changed this section up some. I'm going to bed soon, so speak now or forever hold your peace

@Kiba @FaintlySorcerous Made some changes. Gonna have a chat with Ami. Goketsu play as support for the village, hospital, clinic, etc. Finally tackling the KG seals. I'm guessing Leaf can mint more Ryo for foreseeable future without us so, not sure how Asuma would have taken us showing up with gold (if Cannai was on-board).

[X] Action Plan: Reaching Understanding

On balance, I like this approach to conversing with Asuma more than Shroom's. I think it gets to the heart of the matter earlier, and avoids a few pitfalls where Hazou sharing his perspective might sound like an accusation against Asuma's morality - the part where he says he wants civilian lives to be considered worthwhile sticking out here, as the way it's phrased suggests Asuma doesn't care about them. MadScientist's plan expresses the same sort of sentiment without phrasing it in a way that could antagonize Asuma and distract him from trying to understand us.

Besides that, both plans leave me a little uneasy with respect to the part where Hazou explains why he makes mistakes. In each case it's a neat little framework that sounds accurate but also sets off the red flags in my head that I've learned to recognize when I'm lying to myself about how controllable and well-understood a part of my behaviour is. That is, I feel both plans on this part of the conversation make the mistake of trying to wrap his mistakes and failures in a neat little bow so they can be checkmarked as 'understood' without investigating the actual source of the problem or providing anything actionable that might help fix it, or even the expectation that it can be fixed rather than simply managed.

It's not the end of the world if we go as-is, but I think I'd like it more if it was adjusted away from the implication that it's impossible for Hazou to be anything other than a manic idea-generator that sometimes forgets what treason is.

edit: with respect to the honesty-value of this adjustment, while I accept that it's unlikely for the thread's aggregate approach to things to significantly change and for us to stop making these sorts of mistakes every so often, it's definitely possible for Hazou the character to grow to the point where he can recognize the treason potential in an action and adjust or reject it accordingly. It is in no way a lie to say that we can get better and in time become our own sanity filter, despite the nature of the thread and the quest.

The real question is whether or not Hazou and Ami will be braiding each other's hair while they discuss Dragons.

Edit: I'm now considering growing my hair back out, because I think I've stumbled across a new friendship goal.

@Orisha91 I think the in-law bit is because we're siblings with her sister but not with her, and is the best match. The puzzle solving feels... If the goal is to use it as an anti-Dragon measure, getting Kagome's help earlier on an unsolvable puzzle seems advisable? Though maybe that's my being lukewarm on the ship talking. Like the Haru part though!
