Firing projectiles that stick to the target and cumulatively impede movement... That sounds like the security system that took down Mr Incredible.

Huh. I'm glad you liked it. Personally, I was dissatisfied. I felt, if you'll pardon the pun, that it lacked punch. Hazō didn't take a single point of damage from his enemies throughout the fight and, game-mechanically, debuffing someone's Athletics is irrelevant unless you have an AOE attack that needs to be dodged with Athletics.
Well, from my perspective Hazou got blindsided as soon as the fight started and was in panic mode the whole time, just barely avoiding disaster at each turn, so even if Kotzui never landed a coherent damage-dealing hit on Hazou you were quite good at making it feel like Hazou was in dire straits.

No, I forgot about it. Sorry. Wouldn't have mattered, since I would rule that it isn't usable on the Block check (ie, the only one that mattered) when Hazō was blinded, and on the final punch it would just be extra damage that Hazō had to choose not to do in order to not kill his opponent. Still, I can go back and add it later, once my browsers unlock.
Hakuna matata!

Reflecting on this, I think you kept up the tension so well because it felt like Hazou could lose at any moment. I guess it isn't necessary for him to get hurt to pull that sense of things being balanced on a knife's edge off, and the setbacks and difficult nature of the predicament was enough.

@eaglejarl

Agreed. That was pretty suspenseful. I was pretty certain we were going to get stomped after the "Prepped clones, haha!" reveal.

These sum up my own reading experience very well

I mean, once his athletics is low enough, they can just toss explosives at him.
Assuming they have them, yes.

Shouldn't Hazou get 2 fate points?
Yep. Thanks for the reminder.

I was actually very impressed with the way you worked it out mechanically. The "narrative" of the rolls and Aspects made a lot of sense and added up to a compelling fight in the actual story. This combat system was clearly a good choice for the quest

Thank you all, I appreciate the feedback and support.

Incidentally, has anyone done the math to estimate how much chakra Kenji spent in that fight? Granted, you don't have the jutsu mechanics, but....

Also, it should be added that Kenji has a full character sheets and was built on the expected number of points for someone of his talent level (lower than Hazō's) taking the chūnin exam at the average time. (About 5 years of service.)

Narrator: Kenji, you're not the protagonist!
Kenji: Aww, man!

Also on that note: we'll need to add a clean-me seal to our toolbox for occasions like this.

If that guy was the average we are in for a bad time.
I was aware that Hazou was going in with a handicap due to having XP tied up into sealing and such, but Kitty Kat seemed to have so much better stats overall. I think he beat us on the Deceit roll, was competitive on Taijutsu, beat us in Awareness, didn't run out of chakra and had a pretty OP bloodline to boot. (And he gets to cheat where we likely would have been DQed if we tried the same thing.)

It's actually surprising he waited this long to take the exams if his stats are anything to go by to be honest.

He should have just thrown storage seals at himself.

Maybe.

I am not completely clear on the mechanics there but can you just imagine the visual of a guy covered in blood frantically throwing pieces of paper at himself to clean himself?

Let's assume he came out of the academy at around 1000 XP (3-ish years at less-than-peak training levels while young) and thereafter earned an average of 2 XP a day. That puts him at 4,650 XP total -- about 200 more than Hazou. It's fortunate we had Kagome's universal problem solving technique available -- with Hazou's focus on sealing, he's quite behind the scale.

Doesn't he have the not-Wakahisa teammate to refuel him, meaning his pre-fight expenditures shouldn't be accounted for?

Hazou has only had like 2ish years of service though. So the average guy can make a decent amount less XP and still make it pretty far, especially if they have a bullshit OP bloodline.

I'm not sure how you could make a seal discriminate between dirt and clothing. Maybe something that pushes away all the liquids that are outside the body? That wouldn't fix stains and dry dirt or sand but would handle water and blood and spilled drinks and sweat and body oils. That probably covers most of the things you would need to clean. You could base it off the repulsion effect that air domes use.

It might have some side uses besides cleaning, like you could use it to walk or hide underwater for however long the seal lasted in an air filled bubble of repelled water.

[X] action plan: The Kurosawa gambit

  • Celebrate Hazō's victory
    • Have fun
    • Be best buds with Noburi
  • Privately talk to Jiraiya about ways to rig future matches
    • Poisoning other competitors
    • Trapping the arena in advance
  • The next morning find a Kurosawa Genin who could use extra money
    • Offer to let him scribe Hazō's storage scrolls
      • Hazō will check one of the seals at random for accuracy
      • If it is unsafe the deal is canceled
    • Hazō will infuse them
    • Kurosawa Genin will sell them and keep half the profits

That's an awful lot of trust you're showing someone that could easily kill Hazou with ill-made storage seals.
