[X] Action Plan: Get Help Training, Bring Family Together
  • Seek help from both Hana and Kagome (together) in training for the tournament
    • Hana to help learn/suggest Iron Nerve tricks and Alertness
    • Kagome to use seals to simulate enemies jutsu and using seals in combat
    • Use it as chance to get Kagome used to Hana (suggest they spar lightly)
  • Proceed with Game Night as planned; invite Hana (don't let her Iron Nerve cheat)
  • Ask Mari for help in researching Kashiwagi Noriko and Kashiwagi clan abilities
    • Need access to relevant intel report/bingo book
  • Continue researching casino seals
  • Training from Hell - Chakra Capacity
    • Talk to Dr. Kabuto about most effect way to exercise chakra reserves
    • Deliberate chakra exhaustion minor consequences?
      • If approved, combined with early tests to quantify chakra capacity
I thought chakra capacity was pretty far down on our list of things to train, and not something we'll get any real progress on in a month before the tournament?

Why do you want to pull Kagome in with Hana time?

We don't know that. "At worst" could be she says yes, and Hazou gets caught using it in front of a Kurosawa, and now Leaf and Mist are at war over theft of clan secrets. We don't have the IC contextual knowledge to predict the consequences.

Clearly we learned these techniques from our exilted mother before going missing-nin.

Potential failure mode: Kagome accidentally meatpastes Hana.

Suggesting Kagome spar with anyone outside of the team is a terrible idea tbh.

Light sparring. Light. I have full confidence in Kagome's control when he's not taken by surprise and knows exactly what he's doing. He's dangerous if startled; when acting purposefully he has fine control over his explosives.

No, chakra capacity is a high priority. Where would you get the idea it's not? Hazou has an anemic chakra capacity that is in danger of not being enough to carry him through a single fight. Recharging from Noburi is all well and good, but it doesn't help if Hazou can't last the whole fight on his own.

As for your second question, because it would be good if the adults in Hazou's life get along together. Mari and Hana may be a hopeless cause, but she has nothing against Kagome. If she could learn to appreciate him like Hazou does, it would do a lot to bring her into the family. On the other side too, I want Kagome to strongly think of Hana as one of his people.

Getting enough Chakra Reserves for Shadow Clone is a long-term project because we'll need high-Jounin chakra reserves before Jiraiya will let us learn it.

Getting enough Chakra Reserves to last more than two rounds of combat is a short-term project, since for as much as Chakra is doublecost we're only at level 10. Getting even just a few levels will have significant returns in the tournament proper as we can afford to spend more chakra and don't have to fear the enemy stalling as much.

Here's the current plan I wrote up for how we should manage Hazou's XP in the near-to-mid future. Alertness is godstat and we can't skimp on it, but once the tourney is over we can afford to divert some XP into an Empathy drip, and once we're competent on Alertness getting Shadow Clones is our next big priority, which means Chakra Reserves is a significant priority for the mid-term.

I don't remember Kagome sparring with Mari even but I don't think the risk of someone getting injured or Kagome getting spooked are worth it.

Talk to Dr. Kabuto about most effect way to exercise chakra reserves

Kabuto is going to either be genuinely annoyed for us wasting his time or do the usual spiel of "oh my, I am just so busy right now but if you let me experiment on your Iron Nerve some more I might tell you". We haven't come up with a workable proposal on how to quantify chakra IC yet either so can't bait him with that just yet.
There are safer ways to get this information like asking seasoned jonin since they should know about this or at the very least Jiraiya would, what with being Tsunade's old team mate who must have taught J&O about these things at some point.

When you marry someone, you become related to them, so technically.....
Is it incest after we genetically engineer everyone to have the same bloodline limits?

Yes. Full support.

Well, that went exactly as expected.

Two points:
  • To add to the jokes about Hazou inheriting traits from Hana: Don't forget how pretty damn far she have gone for Shinji.
  • Hana got through Kagome's traps... but to be fair, we don't really know how good they are. If I recall correctly, we've been attacked by ninja while under his traps' defence only once (Bonfire of Tapirs) in our time in the wilderness. His traps are sufficient to deal with chakra beasts, but for all we know anyone with high-chuunin stats could waltz through them as if they're not there. Wouldn't that be an embarrassing realization?

All right you folks, if you're that terrified I can remove the suggestion about Kagome sparring.

I think it's more of the thread's excessive overcaution myself.

Yes, because we haven't seen numerous references to Kagome being spooked by some little thing and, say, narrowly avoiding boom-splatting a classroom of leaf pre-genin.

That would require him to anticipate that Mari wanted to hold up her departure. Also to beat Mari and Hana's Alertness.

If you want, you can add "opportunistic invasion of privacy as a default" to future plans.

Edit: Oh, I also had some separate evil in mind that didn't fit within this update because I thought the current structure was too good to disrupt. Maybe I should do a bonus interlude.
If you don't end up having time, I can get behind some applied evil.
Important-ish Announcement

Good news, everyone! I'm sure you're all eager to put plans in motion to save the day and restore peace to the Gōketsu Clan and its allies. And since @eaglejarl is away this weekend, It will be my unalloyed pleasure to execute you them.
Execute them, hmm.
So, you're going to be executing the Goketsu clan and its allies, with our plan. We spent time building them up, but I'm sure killing hundreds of genin, Dozens of Chunin, several jonin, Shikaku, and Jiraiya before absconding into the night (potentially with our new, hazo ally but not goketsu ally jonin) will earn us lots of XP.
Also delicious drama.
And an in with akatsuki, so we can have new and better allies that have no ulterior motives towards us.
And new and exciting traumas.

Is. Is this christmas?

[] Action Plan: Game Night

I will vote for all plans that include spending time with Mom, Game Night, and researching Casino Seals as their primary focus.

Ninja seem to be able to do it practically all day if they want, (sometimes literally, in the case of water running across oceans) so it can't be all that much.
The swamp was waist-deep on the adults, chest-deep for the genin. The bottom was mud, and there were frequent deep spots where a person could lose their footing and fall out of their depth. Everyone who could waterwalk wanted to, but Shikigami-sensei allowed only a small group up at a time, not wanting everyone to be drained of chakra at once. Soon enough, everyone was soaked and exhausted. Many were bleeding and pale from where chakra leeches had stealthily clamped on to exposed skin and siphoned them nearly dry.
Note that this was only after weeks of running and using chakra. So, yeah.

"Hana, I think we should break up."

Hana goggled. "What? Why? Where did that come from?"

Shinji looked uneasy (and well he should, Hana thought). "Um, you're a really nice person, and I really like you as a friend, but I… uh… I don't think we're really compatible in terms of… of…"

Oh.

"Shinji, are you trying to break up with me so our relationship stops causing a conflict between me and the rest of my clan?"

Shinji looked like he was trying to make himself as small as possible, which was going nowhere given how tall he was.

"…yes?"

Hana grabbed him and kissed him fully on the lips.

"That was for loving me so much you'd pull crap like this to protect my happiness."

Then she pulled back and slapped him, hard.

"That was for pulling crap like this."

She stood up from the couch they'd been sitting on, since that was the only way she'd ever get to tower over him.

"Did you miss the memo where we're partners who make important decisions together? Do you really still not trust me enough to talk these things through?"

Shinji took a second to compose himself, then looked her in the eye. "I'm sorry. Of course I trust you, Hana. Just… I had another visit from you-know-who, and I thought if they're putting this much pressure on me, then what must it be like for you as the clan heir? I don't want to keep putting you through that. I overreacted. I'm sorry."

Hana rolled her eyes. "The elders want an heir who will defend her own and won't be bullied into making poor choices? Well, they're getting one. I'm prepared to dedicate my life to governing the clan and protecting its interests. I am not prepared to let anyone dictate whom I get to love.

"And you. Don't think you're off the hook. When you finally get round to asking me to marry you, I will be expecting the finest diamond ring in the whole of the Water Country."

Shinji groaned. "But Hana, my salary…"

"And if you think that's bad, just think what's going to happen next time you don't trust me enough to talk to me properly."

...

I know everyone's talking about disrespecting agency from Hana's side.

But have we considered that our dad was even worse at it?

...

Oh goddamn, we are so prepared to be paternalistic as fuck it's not even funny; literally every single adult role model we have ever had disrespects the agencies of others and believes only their own actions are capable of solving other's problems, except maybe, maybe Jiraiya.

What do I mean?
  • Dad Shinji
  • Momma Hana
  • Jonin-mom Mari
  • Uncle-sensei Kagome
Noticing a pattern here?

Incidentally, my vote:

[X] Action Plan: Mother's Day
[X] Action Plan: Game Night

I think it's more of the thread's excessive overcaution myself.

I certainly agree with and am eminently sympathetic to the sentiment of pushback against unreasonable paranoia and overcaution. But for meta reasons I want to very explicitly state that no, this caution is entirely reasonable.

I don't think the failure scenario is terribly likely by any stretch, but the expected value is negative enough that it would be bordering criminal negligence to allow anyone excepting Mari, Noburi, Keiko, Akane, or Hazou to spar with Kagome.

This would be like lettong someone who isn't a trained expert play unattended with a human-acclimated lion; if they're a reasonable person and knowledgeable of how to handle the situation, probably nothing bad is going to happen. But you just don't do that, and for very good reason.

@Briefvoice

I'm a fan of Hana-Kagome interaction, but yeah, I'd prefer something with less tail-risk. Talking about Hazou seems good, maybe cooking if Hana's comfortable with it.

I'm sure this list could be expanded. Honoka, Fifi, Naruto, perchance even Pangolin summons.
